1 Rappahannock RiveR Yacht club irvington, va May 2012 the headway The 2012 Sailing Season Begins! Photos by Skip Ferguson & Jan Akers RRYC kicked off the 2012 sailing season in fine form at the Blessing of the Fleet in April The Blessing of the Fleet, held April 21 in perfect weather, drew a big crowd of RRYC-ers eager to get the sailing season underway. After the flag was raised, Don McLean, our resident Club Chaplain, led the prayers and blessed individual boats at the dock. After the ceremonies members adjourned to the clubhouse to enjoy a feast of heavy hors d oeuvres, washed down with red or white sangria. It was a wonderful start to what promises to be a wonderful season on the water, with exciting cruises and an expanded racing program all on the calendar for the coming months!

For those of you who missed the Blessing of the Fleet event at RRYC, you missed one of the greatest evenings anyone can remember. Everything came together, the weather, the camaraderie, and especially the fantastic food that Fran and the Social Committee laid out; it was over the top. Many thanks to all the hands in the kitchen who put together an incredible meal, which allowed for lots of mixing and socializing. Let s hope we have many more such events. And a classic passage to lead us all into the official sailing season: Believe me, my young friend, (said the water rat solemnly) there is nothing, absolutely nothing, half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing Nothing seems really to matter, that s the charm of it. Whether you get away, or whether you don t; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach some place else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you re always busy, and you never do anything in particular. 3 May 2012 Quarterly Slip and Mooring Fees Due Page 3 Invoices were issued the first week of April for slip fees, mooring rental and drydock storage. If you did not receive your invoice, Treasurer@rryc.org. Land Brunch Starts Cruisers Activities By Stephanie Chaufournier, Cruising Fleet Captain As the 2012 sailing season got off to a start, we had a fabulous turnout for our Land Brunch -- a total of 44 cruisers!!! We traded stories of adventures over the winter, talked about the upcoming cruising schedule and enjoyed plenty of tasty calories! Steve Zukor updated the group on the Shakedown Cruise in late April and the Fall Long Cruise, and Pete Clay spoke about the OpSail cruise in June. Many thanks to those who brought food - the Bierlys, Brydons, Carrs, Chamberlains, Deckers, DeCostes, DePalmas, Isbrandtsens, Liners, Orens, Romeys, Stalnakers, Timms and many more -- and to our impromptu bartenders par excellence Diane Cook and Sharon Timm. 4 Page 4 May 2012 Sneak on Down to Ocracoke By Jim Bearden, Cruise Leader Would you like a taste of the Intercoastal Waterway, and do words like Dismal, Locks, Elizabeth, Alligator, Pamlico, and Coinjock interest you? Well come join us on the Club Spring Cruise, May 20 June 3. The Ocracoke Sneak Cruise will work its way down the bay into and through the Dismal Swamp, where you will get to transit river locks and drawbridges (stopping at the Dismal Swamp Visitor Center). Then down to Elizabeth City where we have a line on free docks, museums, walking tours and great soft shell crabs for dinner. ( Alligators, Alligators! Yes, we head across the Albemarle Sound to the Alligator River through a swing bridge and into the Alligator-Pungo Canal a very lovely transit through the swamps to the Pungo River. We ve never seen an alligator in this area, but rumors have it that they are around, and Murphy always keeps a sharp eye out at least when he is awake. Once on the Pungo River we will be stopping in Belhaven, the Beautiful Safe Harbor. (URL - belhavenc.us (note no www)). From there, we continue south on Goose Creek, where we will attempt to sneak up on Ocracoke from the south side of Pamlico Sound. The last two Club cruises came south across the Albemarle through Manteo, however many of the boats became weathered-in at Manteo and never made it to the elusive Ocracoke. While there s a lot of good shopping in Manteo, enough is enough. On the return we plan to transit the Virginia Cut, stopping at Coinjock, where it is reported that there is some of the best prime rib in the area. From there we head on to Norfolk with more drawbridges, another lock, then home. There are several lay days planned and plenty of flexibility if the weather doesn t cooperate. The cruise details and the sign up sheet are on the RRYC web site, so join us on the Club Spring Cruise, take a taste of the ICW and enjoy the bounty of North Carolina! PHRF Racing News By Dwight Timm, PHRF Fleet Commander The RRYC PHRF Racing website page now has RRYC 2012 General Race Instruction posted. Very shortly I will post the Notice of Race for the May 19 RRYC Spring Regatta. YPRCC will host their Spring Regatta on May 12. Their General Race Instruction and Notice of Race should soon be on under Racing Corner. For those interested, their Race Instruction and Notice of Race for the Wednesday evening spring series are also posted at The first of their 10-race Wednesday evening series started April 25 and will finish on June 20. You can join that series any time for some good fun racing. Go to RRYC PHRF web page for a list of some of the Southern Bay races in which you might be interested. I am working on getting a CBYRA Green Book, which lists most all Bay PHRF- sanctioned Races, for the Club library. I am also a member of the Cruising Club of Virginia and have a copy of their 2012 Racing Guide, which lists all races for Region IV from the Rappahannock River down through Hampton Roads. Once I digest the CCV Guide I will place it in our library as well. PHRF Racers, if you have not already, GET YOUR 2012 Valid Rating Certificate! Go to for the how to, OR call PHRF of the Chesapeake at (410) OR, in our Region IV North, call me at xxx-xxx-xxxx home or xxx-xxx-xxxx cell. When you send in your application, be sure to me a copy so I can track, and if necessary, expedite the application. (continued on page 5)

5 May 2012 PHRF Racing News (continued from page 4) Page 5 A reminder...the 2012 Certification of Compliance Special Regulations for PHRF of the Chesapeake, Inc., which is available on the CBYRA web site, needs to be printed, signed by the skipper of the boat and kept onboard. These Special Regulations cover numerous requirements including a need to have a minimum of two people onboard for racing PHRF unless specifically exempted by the organizing authority, and the specification that you must do a practice man overboard drill at least once each year. The Notice of Race for RRYC Spring Regatta on May 19 will include a Social Section providing information on getting together after the race for refreshments and awards. Look in this issue of The Headway for information on the club social to follow that evening. Let s have a good show of our skippers and crew for those two events. The Typhoon National Regatta to be held in Virginia June 22-24, 2012 By Diane Cook-Tench We are hosting the Cape Dory Typhoon National Championship Regatta June 22-24, For the second straight year the Typhoon Nationals will be held on the Northern Neck of Virginia, home of the world s largest Typhoon fleet with over 60 Typhoons plying nearby waters. There were over 2,000 of the Carl Alden designed Typhoons built between 1967 and 1986, affectionately called the World s Littlest Yacht. What would appear to be a graceful looking cruising yacht is somewhat a sheep in wolf s clothing with race fever giving these pocket yachts added purpose as evidenced by the upcoming races. Interest in competing in this year s Nationals has been coming in from up and down the East Coast and as far away as Colorado. Check our 2012 Typhoon National Regatta Facebook Page: For additional information, the Notice of Race ( NOR ), Entry Form and more information about the Regatta are available at the 2012 Typhoon National Regatta blog: com. The start of the 2011 Typhoon Nationals was a colorful affair! Photo by Diane Cook-Tench

6 Page 86 May 2012 From The Galley By Fran Westbrook, Social Committee Chair FOOD, FOOD, AND MORE FOOD. That seemed to be the theme for April s social following the Blessing of the Fleet. Mini Beef Wellingtons, Honeyed Salmon Cakes, Tuscan Pork Carving Station, Shrimp Shooters, Hot Crab Dip, Antipasto, and a wide assortment of crudités and fruit were the featured items along with Red Apple Sangria, White Peach Sangria, and the season s first Strawberry Shortcake. Nineteen Social Committee members logged in 80+ man hours on Saturday ensuring that each menu item was carefully prepared from scratch and artistically displayed for everyone s enjoyment. They are an incredibly determined and talented group of workers. Your many compliments and accolades made all their efforts worthwhile. My personal thanks and appreciation go to Linda DeCoste, Harriet & Clark Meader, Dwight & Sharon Timm, Jane & Harry Wells, Jan & Craig Akers, Coleman Brydon, Kate Raffetto, Dinah Carr, Pat Willett, Debbi Isbrandtsen, Jim Schmidt, Glenda & Tom Decker, Sissy Crowther, Kent White, Diane Owens, and my side-kick Bob Westbrook. There was not a prayer s chance this event could have happened without the involvement of each of them. So what s up for May? We re going to kick-off the grilling season with the Club s traditional Grill Your Own Steak social on Saturday, the 19th. We will provide beef steaks and salmon steaks for you to grill as you like, complete with all the trimmings. Be sure to let us know which you prefer when you make your reservation. The as-you-like-it theme will continue with a salad bar, a baked potato bar, and an ice cream sundae bar. Sounds like fun? You betcha! Don t wait too long to make your reservation we ll fill up fast. Reservations are due no later than May 12 via to dinner@rryc.org. Spring Clean-up day was held April 7, and this scene was not typical of the day! Blaine Liner caught folks standing around before all the chores got organized.
