I have really enjoyed working with our board and the membership has been really supportive. I would like to thank all of you who made this year enjoyable and those who worked so hard for NSA. I look forward to my stint next year as Past Commodore or as many people call it The Wedding Planner (the Past Commodore is in charge of coordinating the rental of the Afterdeck). The NSA Annual Meeting is coming up on Sunday, November 14 th at 2:00 P.M. at the Afterdeck. This is a good time to be involved in the club business and ask any questions to the Board of Governors. It also includes the issuing of awards for A pot luck dinner will be served after the meeting and I encourage everyone to be there. Also, the Christmas Party is scheduled for Saturday, December11th at the Afterdeck. There is a great dinner and band scheduled so I hope to see you there for a good time and great camaraderie. Some reminders this month include the fact that we have winterized the slip water systems, so do not re-connect the hoses to the water valves on shore to the hoses that lead to the slips. A lot of work has been done to blow out the lines and fill them with RV antifreeze. Also, the pressure washer at the crane is winterized this time of year so do not connect the water leading to it and always check with Patrick Adams, our Property Manger, if you need to use it. I would also encourage everyone with a yard space to mow their area if you haven t lately, because of NSA regulations and because the fire danger remains high due to the lack of moisture. Again, it has been an honor and pleasure to serve you this year as Commodore of our fine club. Thank you again for your support and continued membership in NSA. Please remember to check the gates when you are the last to leave the yards or docks. 2 Board of Governors 2010 NSA Events Calendar Dec. 10 Christmas Caroling with Allen and Thumper Dec 11 Holiday Party Dec 31 New Years Eve Party Ninnescah Sailing Association November 4th, 2010 Minutes Present: Olsen, Hieger, Graves, Cheatum, Randle, Kramer, Gronniger, Mosley, Born, Johnson, and Adams Absent: All present and accounted for. Members & Guests: Sheryl Born - Commodore Olsen called the meeting to order at 7:10 P.M. - The minutes of the October BOG meeting were approved as published. Treasurer Report - Mosley presented the Statement of Financial Position for the month ended October 31, 2010 and it was accepted as presented by the board. - John complimented the members of the Board of Directors on their diligence this year in reacting to lower revenue with expense control. Property Managers Report - Adams reports he secured contract labor and the entire afterdeck and outside deck and posts were sealed and are ready for another Kansas winter. Additionally firewood was delivered for the afterdeck and a leak at the main water meter was repaired. - Orientation classes for the afterdeck, crane and committee boat were attended by... well, only Patrick. The board discussed having an article, advertisements, and a rapid hub sent to members so they can take advantage of the orientation classes - The crane has been painted. All the mooring buoys were pulled and stowed. - Following the high water the Public Dock bag wall required repairs which are in progress. The long used generator is in need of repair but parts are becoming more and more difficult to locate. It may be the time has come to replace it. - The water supply to the slips has been winterized thanks to Harbormaster Kramer and Patrick. - A melancholy Adams reported of an adventurous attempt to pick up antifreeze for the club via his much used/abused blue utility trailer. To Patrick s chagrin a County Deputy informed Patrick his trailer lights were not working and presented Patrick his very own ticket. Consequently the trailer now has beautiful red lighting (just in time for the holidays). - Patrick reports he has been the resident property manager for 20 years now and his yearly contract is up November 15 th. Patrick states, Thanks to each Board Member for your service to the club and your support for me personally. I appreciate the opportunity and I hope I can continue for, I believe, my 21 st season. Administrative Secretary Report - Johnson reports there were two members delinquent with dues and both have paid. Member / Guest Forum no discussion Old Business: - The nominating committee will present the candidates to the membership at the NSA annual meeting on Sunday, November 14 th. Board Member Reports: Secretary none Treasurer - Mosley reports the December BOG meeting will be moved from our normal board room to the Consulate room at the airport Hilton. - He provided the current fiscal year accounting that will be presented to the membership at the upcoming NSA annual meeting. Yardmaster - Gronniger reports he plans to verify work credit hours for yards and landscape. He also requested board approval to market the NSA heavy duty sewing machine to members. Following some discussion the board recommended advertising to the membership for sealed bids in the upcoming Mainsheet. - Ryan Gronniger will have RCH files after this weekend and he will send out an RCH introduction to the membership soon. - Dale reminds all sailors to check their boats, trailers every two weeks during the winter. Dale also reminds everyone to take advantage of the few hours of having an empty yard space and mow during the process of taking boats out of the water. Of course this is also the time to remove worn out tires, used batteries, oil and other debris from your yard space. It can never be said enough... lock the gates when you are the last one out of the yard. Harbormaster Report - Kramer reports he and Patrick winterized the dock faucets. He stressed the importance of NOT reconnecting the permanent water supply to the pressure washer or to the docks. This task is put off until we have our first frost warning which occurred this past Thursday. - He also reports having all the dock pins painted. Operations Report - Randle reports he has solidified the items that

3 Board of Governors cont. will be in the ship store via the internet. At this point we are waiting on the provider to link their web site with the NSA website. This long awaited store items should be available soon. Randall reports there will be clothing items such as hats, scarf s, jackets, and shirts in all sizes and a variety of colors. - He reports the Low Country Boil and Allen Johnson s 4 th annual 50 th birthday party was a huge success. It was noted that NSA s very own Dale Gronniger had a twin who was seen at the event partying and dancing to every song. - Information about the December 11 th Christmas party will be forthcoming in a rapid hub and an advertisement in the Mainsheet. Vice Commodore - Cheatum reported on the status of his research regarding the cost of adding a fixed starting gun to committee boat. All agreed we continue to research. - Cheatum spoke to the proprietor of Arctic Glacier (AG) regarding NSA cost of the AG ice machine. They are not willing to sell NSA the existing ice machine but are okay with NSA buying our own freezer. It appears the club will save money by buying our own machine. Cheatum is optimistic he will be able to find something that will work. - The annual CSSA meeting is scheduled for November 13 th in Tulsa. Gary will attend to set up the 2011 Regattas. Past Commodore - Graves reports the afterdeck will be in use on Nov 20 th by the Boy Scouts. They will be having a camp out and annual dinner that week-end. - Graves requested and the board approved expenditure of an amount of up to $2,500 for the needs of the Lease Committee working on renewal of the Association s facility lease. Commodore Elect - Hieger no report New Business: - A slip exchange request has been requested between Jon Zehnder (E-23) and John Stansfield (E- 19). The board unanimously approved the request. - Janet Wright from Wichita River Festival has asked about the possibilities of NSA providing a Twilight Flotilla on the Arkansas River in Drawbacks include the shallow water depth, current, unknown wind speed and wind direction for the night in question. Olsen will announce the request to the membership and whoever wants to participate can, but it will not be a club sanctioned event because of so many unknowns. Announcements/Events: - Annual Meeting Sunday, November 14 th at 2:00 P.M. Potluck following the meeting. - BOG Meeting - Thurs, December 2nd, 7:00 P.M., at Airport Hilton. The meeting WILL NOT be held in the Board Room but in the Consulate. - BOG breakfast Tuesday, December 16 th at 7:00 A.M. at Copper Oven, 2409 W. 13 th St. - Next KBRS race is 5 months away (sigh!). - Christmas Caroling Dec 10 th. 4 From the Harbormaster - Wetslip Use In the Winter: Sadly, another prime sailing season is coming to an end. After a slow start getting the boats in the slips due to the high water, this summer produced some fine sailing days. With winter approaching, I feel it is necessary to remind all sailors with boats in the slips of the following: Slip plumbing will soon be disconnected and winterized. Do not reconnect the plumbing as this may allow the water to freeze and plumbing to burst. All garden hoses should be removed from the docks or they will be discarded. The pressure washer by the crane will remain in service through the winter, but the user should bring a gallon of low-toxic engine antifreeze (not the pink kind) and know how to winterize the sprayer. When freezing temperatures arrive, call the Property Manager if you plan to use the sprayer. Failure to correctly winterize the sprayer may cause damage by freezing water internally. The restrooms east of the Afterdeck will soon be locked for the winter. The pit toilet toward the shelter house will remain open. Whether your boat is in the slip or the boatyard, do not use unattended heaters, secure all halyards away from masts, remove the sails, and clear the cockpit drains. If your boat is left in the water, double your dock lines, check your boat every two weeks, and notify the Harbormaster if you are going to use a de-icer. It will need to have an operating thermostat and a fee will be charged to cover the cost of electricity for the equipment. After December 15 th, all boats are to be removed from C, D, and E docks and berthed on A or B docks for the winter. Failure to relocate the boats will require the Harbormaster to do so and a fee will be charged for the activity. Even though the formal yard space mowing inspection season is over we need to keep in mind the potential fire hazard as winter approaches. If the long grass catches fire, your boat may end up as a smoldering heap of synthetic toxic waste and probably those boats next to you. This reminder is to encourage you to make sure that your space is mowed down properly and free of junk. Thank you to all who have taken care of this already, but we still have a few who will need to do this. The easiest time to check this is when you put your boat away for the season. We will make every effort to contact those who fail to do so prior to mowing for you and billing. During the off season please remember you are still required to check your boat at least every two weeks, make sure the tires have air and your equipment can be moved in the event of an emergency. Boats need to be secured to the trailer and securely tied down to the provided concrete anchors. The doggy style anchors will not hold in the storms we get here, and will kill our mowers. Please check your lines, halyards and covers, the wind can quickly destroy your equipment, or you can damage someone else's. When you leave make sure all gates, buildings, and doors are closed and locked. Please take any used batteries, oil, tires or junk with you. 7 Migrating Pelicans return to Cheney It s really great that the lake level is still at conservation pool. About the only benefit of this summer s flooding, I suppose. But it sure makes it nice for Fall sailing. Thought you might like to see a few recent visitors at our Lake Cheney. Last Saturday, the mighty sloop Cyrano (O Day 17) transported Becky and me about 4 miles north of Sailboat Cove looking for a confirmation of the pelican migration. We sailed to the mouth of the reservoir where the Ninnescah enters. Our efforts were rewarded by a sighting of hundreds of pelicans standing on the far north shore, with hundreds of gulls in the water in front of the pelicans. The wind was out of the south, so I suspect all the birds were taking advantage of shad and other small fish washing up into the shallows. About 150 yds offshore, we were in about 3 ft of water, so that was as far as we could go (though I would not have wanted to encroach any further on the birds). I have attached a few photos so that you might get a brief glimpse of our visitors. The pictures are mediocre at best. But considering they were shot at that distance and with a hand-held lens and with the boat bouncing around, I guess we were lucky to get a few shots at all. Anyway, the birds were magnificent and Becky and I wanted to share with you what we got to see. Take care for now - - and I hope you are out enjoying this beautiful Fall weather! N.
