3 Minimum Acceptable Finish and Appearance for Super Yacht Gloss Coatings 1. General Requirements The following general requirements are stated with respect to the minimum acceptable finish and appearance of the gloss coatings of super yachts: The painted surfaces of the vessel shall be divided into two areas of importance prior to starting work and agreed with the owner s representative: o HVA: High Visibility Area o LVA: Low Visibility Area Measurements shall be carried out in accordance to ISO (DIS) Measuring instruments used to determine the acceptable finish and appearance for super yacht coatings as specified in ISO (DIS) Measurements in daylight: o Enough and sufficient daylight is required for multiple measurements when measured inside, minimum lux. o In case these conditions cannot be met by the yard, the inspector will reserve the right for a final inspection after the yacht has left the yards production hall. The inspection has to be carried out under the same conditions as during the application process (i.e.: temperature change = negative effect on appearance) o When measured outside enough daylight is required but there shall be no direct sunlight on the surface. Specific project reference panels/areas, if used, shall be of a reasonable size and shape which shall have all coatings applied as specified in the contract for the hull and superstructure. Prepare at least one reference for HVA and one reference for LVA. If the yacht has multiple colours then consideration should be given to preparing additional references, being of HVA or LVA quality as appropriate. Instrument Calibration; If one or more parties are undertaking a coating condition evaluation i.e. owners representative, yard, paint manufacturer, contractor, consultants etc., a joint calibration of instruments should be undertaken so that all results obtained are directly comparable. The calibration should be in accordance with manufacturer s guidelines and relevant ISO standards. All results should be recorded. 1

4 1.1 Fairing Any fairing requirements shall be defined in the contract. 1.2 Orange peel and DOI (Distinction of Image) The topcoat Orange Peel and DOI can be measured by using a Wave Scan measure equipment or equivalent. In addition visual inspection can be made and compared to the signed pre-agreed reference panel. Orange Peel. The average values of Wa to We, shall not exceed 35. o 95% of all values shall be within ranges of +/- 15units from the average DOI. Based on measurements with wave scan equipment (BYK) the minimum average DOI acceptable value is 87 for HVA and for LVA; DOI. Based on measurements with the Gonio - photometer equipment (NOVO Gloss IQ) the minimum average DOI acceptable value is 92 for HVA and for LVA; 1.3 Colour There shall be strict control of paint to ensure that the paint applied matches that specified in the contract. In addition, the applicator shall check that each paint, where possible, is from the same manufacturer s batch. When reference panels are used, a comparison shall be made to confirm the colour match. 1.4 Gloss Horizontal surfaces: 95% of values to be above 87 Gu; Vertical surfaces: 95% of values to be above 89 Gu. 1.5 Particulate contamination These numbers shall be averaged. There shall be no more than 5 dust particles with maximum size of 150 microns/dm² in HVA. There shall be no more than 8 dust particles with maximum size of 150 microns/dm² in LVA 1.6 Sags Small runs and sags may in certain circumstances be acceptable and should be defined in the contract. Note: Buffing and/or polishing of a polyester urethane finish is generally not accepted and will only be accepted for very small areas after consultation and written approval of the owner s representative 2

5 1.7 Other Defects Any defects that would affect the DOI viewed with naked eye in daylight will not be allowed unless accepted by owner s representative, such as but not limited to; Brush Marks Hazing Fogging Sanding Marks Cleaning Marks Overspray Tapelines Old sags printing through 2. Definitions ISO (DIS) shall be used as the reference for all definitions. However principal definitions are reproduced below: 2.1 Definition of high and low visible areas. See ISO (DIS) DIS 11347; 3.29 and 3.31 Note: Due to the possible differences in yacht shapes and sizes it is recommended that identification of HVA and LVA areas are clearly included in the yacht coatings contract 2.2 Gloss gradate for visual valuation; Basic reference: polished black glass normal = 100RE (%): 3
