March Calendar, etc., pg. 8 Sprig 20 Guinea Cup #1 Class A Winner - Artist Franz Schwenk The AMSS Guinea Cup #1 Race was sailed on February 5th, 2011 on a very nice day. The fleet of 10 boats sailed in 3 classes. Five in long course A, Two in long course B and Three in the short course. Course Delta R was sailed, which meant we sailed down the bay. The wind was very light and the tide was ebbing all day so it paid to hug the shore sailing down the bay and the middle back up the bay. The post race gathering at Fiddlers Green was a big success. Thanks to AMSS supporter Steve Rock and the crew of Fiddlers. The next Guinea Cup #2 Race, with spinnakers and gollywobblers, etc. allowed, will be sailed on Saturday, 12 March. There will be an after race gathering at the Bay Club. Please see our website for the new 2011 Guinea Cup courses and sailing instructions. 2 P a g e 2 March Letter from the Commodore... New Guinea Cup Prize Format: The Guinea Cup races were proposed by Rod Latimer to be a fun and relaxed series of races. Our format accomplished this goal by having some working sail only races to which we added some spinnaker races Officers, Board Members, Chairs, etc. Commodore Janet Callow Vice Commodore Brad Smith Port Captain Peter Hylen Purser Kathy Easter This year we added the prize incentive to attract participants that may want to sail one or two races, which would not qualify for a trophy, but may be enough to win a prize. We are now awarding prizes to boats that come out for the Guinea Cup in this way: The first race prizes went to the first place winners in the long course and the first place winner in the short course of Guinea Cup Race #1. The post race event was held at Fiddlers Green, with plenty of sliders and good cheer. Thanks to Greg Stewart and his magic laptop, the race results were available immediately; first place winners were: Windley, Altair, and Sprig. The second race, sailing on March 12th, will honor the second place winners in the long course (Class A & B combined) and the second place winner in the short course. The post race event and prize giving will be at the Bay Club, 5 p.m., with appetizers. The third race, sailing on June 11, will honor the third place winners and continue such that the 7 th race honors the 7 th place winners. The third post race event is at Fiddlers Green on 11 June. When you win, you can take your pick, but you can only win once! 3 P A G E 3 March Flag Boat Dickie Walker The DICKIE WALKER is a 63 foot flybridge trawler. The vessel was designed by Elders McGinnis with the master shipwright being S.D. Ebersold. This one-off custom vessel was built by Southern Shipbuilding in Jacksonville, Florida in The DICKIE WALKER was rehulled (double planked Peruvian mahogany) and reframed from bow to stern in 2008, under the supervision of CF Koehler. Powered by the original Caterpillar D-13,000 single screw, the DICKIE WALKER vessel has cruised extensively in the past 60 years. With a 4,000 mile range she has cruised to Alaska, Hawaii, up the Columbia River, the Caribbean, the inter coastal waterways, the Mexican gold coast and Costa Rica. She has hailed in Southern California for the past 30 years and also hailed in Alaska for 20 years. The DICKIE WALKER has received the Peoples Choice award at the San Diego Wooden boat festival numerous times. It was enrolled by the offshore cruising society as a Vessel worthy of the Sea in The DICKIE WALKER has been owned by Jerry Montiel the past 12 years. Montiel states, I have had so much fun though the years with this boat that they may have to wheel me off of it in a wheelchair someday. It s my home. One of our favorite things to do is to go to the Catalina Jazz Festival for a couple of weeks every October, which I have done for 11 of the past 12 years. Jerry has also taken the boat to Puerto Vallarta seven times, up the Columbia River as far as Hood River and cruised British Columbia. Life is good, says Jerry. 4 P A G E 4 ANCIENT MARINERS SAILING SOCIETY ** Special Program Announcement** 3 March General Meeting: 100th Chicago-Mackinac Race, by Greg Stewart, Southwestern Yacht Club, 7:30 PM Staff Commodore Greg Stewart was up and about for the 100th Chicago Mackinac Race. This competition ran in one of the most scenic and pristine sailing grounds you can imagine. Greg will have on hand a video of the race sponsored by Gary Jobson (yes, the one!), offering his private commentary and particular insights on this renown yachting event. For those who have spent their lives on the coasts, this freshwater scene is an amazing spectacle of beauty. Come join us, and bring your friends and family. 6-ish for dinner and drinks beforehand, the public is welcome as usual. The show will start promptly at 7:30 PM (i.e., 1930). Be there! San Diego is ready to once again put on a sensational sailing show as the opening round of 2011 RC44 Championship Tour gets under way. Although this myth is widely believed, I am able to report that it is completely untrue.
