5 June 26, 2008 It is my great pleasure to welcome you to The San Francisco Yacht Club. Our club is the oldest yacht club on the West Coast and has a long history of strong support for youth sailing. I speak for the Flag Officers, Board of Directors and members of the club when I say that we are honored to host the 2008 U. S. Youth Sailing Championship. For those of you who have not previously sailed on San Francisco Bay, I trust that you will find that its reputation as one the most interesting and exciting sailing venues in the world is accurate. I also sincerely hope that you will enjoy our club s facilities and location in one of the bay s finest, fog free areas, Belvedere Cove. Vice Commodore Kyle Elliott, Rear Commodore Ray Lynch, as well as our many volunteers and staff, have all worked very hard and enthusiastically in preparing for this event and we are committed to making this the most successful and exciting U. S. Youth Sailing Championship ever. Congratulations and good luck. John C. Swain Commodore 2008 U.S. Youth Sailing Championship 5

7 To the 2008 U.S. Sailing Championship Competitors: Welcome to the San Francisco Yacht Club! We are the oldest Yacht Club on the West Coast, established in 1869, and we are honored to host the finest youth sailors in America. It is through hard work and determination that you have arrived at this level of sailing, and we are sure it has also been accomplished with the help and support of your parents, your coaches, and your respective Clubs. You should be as proud to participate as we are proud to have you as guests of our Club. Like all of the U.S. Youth Championships before us, a great deal of time has been spent on the planning and logistics process. That process commenced in 2006, when the San Francisco Yacht Club stepped forward to host the 2008 event. Under the leadership of then Commodore Wendy Miller, followed by Commodores John Scarborough, William Smith, and our current Commodore John Swain, the enthusiasm has been kept alive and fueled to ensure the best youth event in the country, held at what we believe to be the best sailing venue in the country, and that this will be a lasting experience for all. Regardless of the host Club, this event would not be what it is without the leadership of US SAILING. With the guidance of US SAILING s Liz Walker and Shannon Bush, who provide the organization skills, creativity, and determination, we can ensure that each year s event is of the highest caliber possible. The Championships would also not be possible without the financial and physical support of our local sponsors. This year s event has the generous support of Nautica, LaserPerformance, The Belvedere Cove Foundation, Yahoo!, Bank of Marin, ETON, Cliff Bar, Morgan Stanley, Svendsen s Boat Works, Hood Sails and Sequoia Mortgage Capital. Without their dedication to sailing and providing opportunities for young sailors to advance and excel in their chosen sport, we would not have the event we are here to enjoy. The San Francisco Yacht Club is dedicated in its charter to introduce and advance sailing to the entire family of our members. We fully support all of our young sailors, and commit to them that we will provide the platform that can take them to as high a level of sailing as possible. We ask only one thing in return for our efforts, and we make that same request of each and every Youth Champs competitor: Respect *We ask that you Respect your fellow sailors, in the highest Corinthian spirit *We ask that you Respect all Judges, Race Officials, and coaches. *We ask that you Respect The San Francisco Yacht Club, your host family, and all the volunteers who have worked so hard for months to make this possible. *Lastly, Respect yourselves for what you have accomplished and be proud to be a participant. On behalf of the entire membership of The San Francisco Yacht Club, the Board of Directors, and the Flag Officers, we wish each and every one of you the best of luck, and smooth sailing! 11 HISTORY OF THE SAN FRANCISCO YACHT CLUB The San Francisco Yacht Club, one of the oldest yachting organizations in the Western Hemisphere, is the oldest such club on the Pacific Coast of North America. The San Francisco Yacht Club was founded in 1869 and incorporated as a nonprofit organization in The original anchorage and Clubhouse were located in San Francisco near Mission Rock. Inadequate depth of water and increasing industrial growth in the area resulted in a move to Sausalito. Waterfront property was purchased and a new Clubhouse erected. The Clubhouse was destroyed by fire in 1897 with the loss of most of the trophies and records. Another Clubhouse was built on the same site in This building is still standing and now houses the Ondine restaurant. Increasing auto ferry traffic and congestion made another move imperative. The decision to move was made in One group, headed by Commodore Clifford Smith, felt that Belvedere Cove would be an ideal location. Both waterfront property and tidelands were available for purchase. Another group felt that the Club should move back to San Francisco and lease land from the City on the Marina. A bitter fight developed among the Board of Directors and among the members as to which site was best for the future of the Club. This quotation from the minutes speaks for itself: Vice Commodore Smith spoke at length on the advantages of the Marina site. After considerable discussion, his resignation was offered and unanimously accepted by the Board. The Belvedere Cove site was finally selected. Those who opposed the move resigned and formed the St. Francis Yacht Club. Property in Belvedere Cove was purchased and the Club moved to Belvedere in 1927, renting the old Pacific Motor Boat Club property until the cove could be dredged and a Clubhouse built. A small Clubhouse was completed in 1934 in time for the Opening Day celebration. It is still part of the present building, which has been remodeled and enlarged many times. The most recent refurbishing of the Clubhouse was completed in 2007 at $1million. The present San Francisco Yacht Club Harbor was completed in Much of the original planning dates back to Lack of money and the depression caused this effort to fail. During 1956, a basic plan acceptable to the City of Belvedere and to the Club was developed. The Harbor was completed and opened in late Originally, 134 berths were constructed. Additional berths were added later, the last 26 in 1960, bringing the total to 175. In a new Sailing Center was built in the lower parking lot area opposite the Youth Sailing Dock and storage unit. This new building included facilities and offices for the Junior Program, a meeting room on the second floor; bath and shower facilities for men and women and additional club storage. In 2006 and 2007 the Clubhouse was given an extensive renovation with new wall treatments, carpets and hardwood flooring and lighting. A fireplace was added to the Bar Lounge area. A new sound system was built in and the HVAC was upgraded. The San Francisco Yacht Club, with its tranquil setting in Belvedere Cove and its superb Harbor, is widely recognized as the premier yachting facility on the West Coast and a true Home away from Home! 2008 U.S. Youth Sailing Championship 11

12 U.S. Youth Championship History The U.S. Youth Sailing Championship was started in 1973 at the Sheridan Shore Yacht Club in Wilmette IL. The top 150 sailors from around the country, aged 19 or under (ISAF World Youth Championship age limit), were sent invitations on US Olympic Yachting Committee letterhead to attend the event in Lasers and 470s in mid- June. From the outset, a racing clinic and video recaps of the races led by world class sailors have been an integral part of the week. Buddy Melges, Dave Ullman, Bruce Goldsmith, and Bruce Kirby were instructors in that first year. Winners were funded to World and National Championships. The event has several goals: (a) to provide a challenge to young sailors to grow beyond the skill levels used to win at the local and regional level (b) to serve as a bridge between Junior Sailing (age 17) and College Sailing, at a time between the end of school and the start of summer sailing instructor jobs when participants had their driving licenses (c) to better produce US sailors capable of winning the World Youth Championships in big-fleet races; (d) to develop and identify talent for the US Olympic Sailing Team, and (e) to motivate a lifetime commitment to sailing. One significant outcome of the event has been to create a new class of friends each year, coming from every sailing center in America. As these graduates became more involved and contributed to the administration of the sport of sailboat racing, the North American Yacht Racing Union (NAYRU) evolved into today s US SAILING with truly national representation. Now after over all these years, each meeting has the feel of a college reunion. Invitations to the event are made by US SAILING s Youth Championship Committee, based on review of applicant s entry forms.other than the Laser, boats have changed over the years. Beginning in 2006, this prestigious championship included Club 420 s, Lasers, Laser Radials and 29er.There have been juniors who have won a U.S. Junior Championships and claimed a U.S. Youth title. Louis Verloop of Coconut Grove Sailing Club won the Smythe trophy three times and also claimed the Junior Olympic Singlehanded title in California s Kevin Hall won the Smythe trophy twice and added the Junior Olympic Singlehanded title to his resume in Peter Dreyfuss of Miami, FL, won the Singlehanded title in 1988, a year after he won the Smythe trophy. Dalton Bergan of Seattle, WA, did the same, winning the Singlehanded title in 1996 and the Smythe trophy in David Ames of Miami, FL pulled off a similar feat, winning the doublehanded title in 1995, three years after winning the Bemis trophy. He had the same crew, P.J. Buhler, on both occasions.youth Championship graduates have become the stalwarts of successful college sailing programs and filled out the ranks of All-Americans. As an example, seven early participants in the US Youth Champs eventually were honored with the Everett B. Morris Trophy for College Sailor of the Year. These included Augie Diaz ( 74), Peter Isler ( 76), Carl Buchan ( 77), Steve Benjamin ( 78), Alex Smilgelski ( 79), Stu Johnstone ( 80) and Morgan Reeser ( 84). Additionally: Terry Neff, Neal Fowler, Dave Perry, Hugo Schmidt, James McCreary, Buzz Reynolds, Ed Adams, Gerard Coleman, Kelly Gough, Mark Rastello, and Gary Knapp were early 1970s Youth Championship participants who also became Collegiate All-Americans.The only three-time winners are Scott Haladay of Gulf Breeze, FL (boardsailing); Andrew Campbell of San Diego, CA (Singlehanded); and Bill Hardesty of San Diego, CA (Doublehanded & Singlehanded); Andrew Campbell led the 2006 Georgetown Hoyas to the Leonard Fowle Trophy, emblematic of the top collegiate team, while winning the Morris Trophy for Sailor of the Year honors. Hardesty also won the Bemis trophy in 1990 and was College Sailor of the Year in Eight winners went on to with the Youth Worlds. Mike Goyan (Lakewood, CA) was the winning crew three times in four years during the 1980s, each time with a different helm.the Robert L. Johnstone III Trophy for the Singlehanded winner recognizes the Founder and Chairman ( ) of the event and his contribution to one-design and community sailing programs. The Doublehanded trophy memorializes Manton D. Scott, a Sears Cup winner ( 69), Collegiate All-American ( 72) and inspirational leader in small boat sailing, who was electrocuted by an overhead powerline when stepping the mast of his 470. This was a month prior to the 1973 event, where Scott had been scheduled as one of the Clinic instructors. Sportsmanship awards were given out beginning in 1989 in the name of 1973 participant and later event Chairman, David M. Perry, a well known author of books on the racing rules, recognizing his leadership qualities in junior and intercollegiate sailing U.S. Youth Sailing Championship

20 San Francisco Bay is over 60 miles long running North and South, and comprises over 500 square miles of tidal waters. Drainage from about 40% of the state of California passes out through the Bay. All of that water flows in and out at the Golden Gate, the only outlet of the Bay. The water at the Gate is over 400 feet deep, but tidal currents there can be over 5 knots. The Bay is also a major international shipping port. The main shipping channel runs through the central Bay and turns South towards Alameda, well away from the racing area. However, a secondary shipping channel does run North from the central Bay, and will need to be crossed to reach the racing area. The racing area itself is in the eastern part of the Bay, East of the North shipping channel and adjacent to Berkeley. The water in the area is generally 6 to 10 feet deep. The wind tends to be relatively even across the area, and the tidal currents are relatively small. The distance from the SFYC to the racing area is about 4 miles, and ALL competitor s boats must be accompanied by a coach or support boat while crossing the channel East of Angel Island in either direction. All racing will be well clear of the channel. The conditions vary dramatically depending on wind and tide. Typically a thermally-driven westerly breeze develops in the late morning, and builds as the day goes on, often reaching knots on a typical Summer afternoon. A flood tide results in relatively flat water. But when the direction of the tide and wind are opposed, heavy chop can develop, especially in afternoon conditions. The water temperature is in the 50 s, so it is important to dress warmly, although it is generally very pleasant at the SFYC U.S. Youth Sailing Championship
