2 Learning objectives This training course aims to: Prepare ATLAS underground guides to guide a visit in the presence of external visitors on the ATLAS underground visit path Learn how to behave in case of an emergency situation with a group of visitors 2

4 Pre-requisite Access request via ADaMs to: GLOBE-GUI (from ATLAS to Globe) LHCS1 (from Globe to ATLAS) ATL_USA ATL_UX ATL_CR ADaMS to control if access is granted Followed classroom training courses: First-aider strongly recommended Fire extinguisher recommended Safety equipment: Safety shoes Safety helmet with front-light Personal dosimeter For new guides, follow at least one ATLAS Underground visit as shadow guide + Mobile phone charged, NOT on silence mode and phone number given to SLIMOS 4

7 Visit Organisation IMPACT CERN IMPACT website: IMPACT to be cloned: n Print the IMPACT document twice. - 1 to be signed and given back to the SLIMOS - 1 to be kept by the guide and to check that everybody is present in case of evacuation 7

8 Visit Organisation Visit between 10:00 and 17:00, the access is through the main sliding gate which will be open. Visit before 10:00 or after 17:00, you have to take the group through the access control gate along the Chemin de Maisonnex. When all participants have gone through the turnstile, it is important that you close it by reading your access card again since it does not close automatically. 8

Visit Safety Rules The ATLAS underground

Each visit shall not exceed 45 minutes Maximum

10 Visit Safety Rules The ATLAS underground caverns are classified supervised area. Each visit shall not exceed 45 minutes Maximum 12 visitors - minimum 5 per group No more than 1 group underground at the same time Visit duration on the visitor platform in UX15 is 15 minutes max No visitor below 16 years old No pregnant woman No ferromagnetic implant (pacemaker, etc.) No claustrophobic visitors No high heels, no open shoes No drinking and eating No bag back bigger than 10L Info: Grey box in the lift area to drop bags and jacket, key with the visitor key 10

12 Visit step by step In ATLAS visitor center Guide informs the group that: they will enter a supervised area They have to sign the IMPACT document. The guide then leaves the group in the visitor center (3162) and goes to the SLIMOS desk in the ATLAS control room (ACR) to bringing back the signed document SLIMOS: Checks alarms and access conditions Gives safety instruction leaflet Checks that IMPACT is approved and takes back signed document Turns on and gives operational dosimeter Checks that guide has a CERN mobile phone or will give him one Procures visitor key to open the MAD doors Once back with the group, the guide reminds the safety rules using the leaflet. -> If a person can not access, he/she should stay with the SLIMOS in the control room. 12

Allows the visitors to pass through to the other side, and asks them to pick up the red helmets in the box in the elevator lobby and a hair net if they wish Waits for everyone to pass to the other side and then releases the key. The guide must use the PAD entry Info: To keep the door open the key has to be in the lock and turned to the right. Doors on both ends of the pathway have to be fully open, before allowing the visitors to pass through Guide and group enter the lift and descend to level -1. Inside the lift, the guide communicates to the group that: - The lift area is the safest area - In case of evacuation, they must follow him 13

When at the red door, opens the green emergency handle by pulling right, and rearms the handle immediately with the small key Info: Instructions are on the door Opens the next door (green) and leaves it open during the visit. The guide allows the visitors to walk into the UPX14 corridor and tells them not to pass the yellow door. Open the emergengy lock Leave the green door open, during the visit Then closes the red door and walks to the yellow door and opens it. Info: As the green handle has been rearmed, the red door will close automatically by pulling it Open the emergengy lock Once the guide enters through the yellow door, he/she should check that the orange doors are closed and the platform is free. The guide welcomes all the visitors onto the terrace and closes the yellow door Leave the green door open, during the visit Walk to t reach the 14

15 Visit step by step On the way back, USA15 The guide : Lets the group go through the yellow door, and closes it insuring that no visitor has been left on the platform. In the corridor, passes first, and opens the red door by pulling left the green emergency handle, Lets the group go through the red door, and closes the green door, Rearms the green emergency handle of the red door and pulls the door to insure that the door is properly closed. 15

16 Visit step by step On the way back At the surface, the guide: Asks the visitors to drop off the helmet and take back their bags Opens the MAD doors to let the visitors exit. Exits using the PAD. Show the value of the operational dosimeter to the visitors Escorts the visitor group back to the ATLAS visitor center Returns to the SLIMOS: - Visitor key - Operational dosimeter (SLIMOS will turn it off) Escorts the visitors out of the Point 1 area via the Globe pathway. Info: In case of visitors who are transported by bus to Point 1, the gate closest to the Globe should be used to access the ATLAS Visitor Centre 16

26 Emergency Situations What to do in case of Lift Failure? Keep calm Stay calm Continue the visit, if no emergency situation going on Contact the SLIMOS (78804) to inform him/her about the situation. otherwise apply the emergency situation procedure, but stay in the Never leave the group of visitors alone or to another person.
