31 Biological Hazards Poison Ivy One can become sensitized even if previously immune Hazard Mitigator Be able to identify Wear appropriate protective clothing (e.g., gloves, long-sleeved shirts) Treatment Wash skin with cool water and soap for at least 2-3 minutes do not use warm water If you are in the field, blot the area with an alcohol patch and follow by washing as soon as possible Calamine lotion, Tecnu, yellow laundry soap, or Colloidal oatmeal (Aveeno ) baths provide relief from itching and rashes Poison Ivy Rash

32 Biological Hazards Fire Ants Approximately 1 percent of the population has the potential for serious/dangerous reaction to fire ant stings Hazard Mitigators Be aware of your surroundings at all times (the best mitigator for all hazards) Wear boots and gloves powdered with talc Fire ants bite, then sting, so brush them off as soon as you feel a prickling sensation Treatment Wash area with alcohol Relieve itching with Benedryl Seek immediate medical treatment if reactions occur (difficulty in breathing, severe rash, loss of consciousness) Fire Ant Fire Ant Nest

33 Biological Hazards Spiders Identification of poisonous spiders Brown Recluse - ¼ to ¾ inch long body, dark violin shape on the top of the leg attachment, 6 eyes arranged in pairs Black Widow ½ inch long, female black widow is normally shiny black, with a red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen Hazard Mitigators Keep clothing buttoned and tucked in Stay alert Treatment Keep patient calm and rested Apply pressure/immobilization bandage Seek medical aid immediately If safe, collect spider for identification Brown Recluse Black Widow

34 Biological Hazards Wasps/Yellow Jackets Be aware of potential hive/nest locations, which may include culverts, drainage pipes, junk piles, or dense shrubbery Avoid wearing perfumes, hair spray, or scented lotions in the wilderness If attacked: Do not scream or wave arms Cover your face with your hands Run for shelter in a building or vehicle - do not seek shelter in water Remove stingers as quickly as possible to lessen the amount of venom entering the body; remove the stinger by raking your fingernail across it do not pinch or pull the stinger out Put ice on the sting to reduce the swelling Southern Yellow Jacket

35 Biological Hazards Snakes Identification of poisonous snakes Swim on top of the water unlike non-poisonous snakes (only head above water) Have vertical type pupils (like a cat's eye) Head is normally larger than the body and has a triangular (arrowhead) appearance Hazard Mitigators Wear light-colored clothing Keep clothing buttoned and tucked in Avoid sudden movements and do not provoke Carry snake bite kit Treatment In the case of a snake bite - keep the patient calm, restrict activity, and immobilize the bite area (do not elevate); immediately obtain medical attention Rattlesnake Cotton Mouth/ Water Moccasin Copperhead
