1 October, 2014 International Scuba GIFT CARD Let the Fun Begin! Inside this issue: Milestones & Certs 2 Haunted Dive Sites 3 Carnaval in Cozumel 4 Meet the IS Team 5 When are we diving October CSSP October CSSP SPECIAL EVENTS! November 1-2 CSSP November TBD Howdy everyone! THE APOCALYPSE IS HERE! As divers, we invest a lot of time and dedication to our sport. Why let a little something like the zombie apocalypse stand in the way of you and the hobby you love? Now you don t have to! Learn how to be a safe diver during the PADI Zombie Apocalypse Diver specialty course. Divers will complete seven challenges over two dives that will test their buoyancy, navigation, ingenuity, and safety skills. You only need to be 12 years old and an open water diver to participate. And it counts toward your Master Scuba Diver certification! This course will kick off a whole weekend of Halloween and fall themed activities. The zombie dive will take place Saturday, October 25th. Then, on Sunday, October 26th, International Scuba presents the annual Pumpkin Carving Contest and Chili Cook-Off. Earn yet another fun certification with the PADI Underwater Pumpkin Carver specialty. Divers will learn knife safety skills and work on proper buoyancy while they carve the scariest (or cutest) pumpkins around. Certification is only $45 and includes a short knowledge review and your certification card. (Pumpkins not included.) More to come! Once you have your pumpkin carving mastered, you can submit your glorious creation to the pumpkin contest for judging. There are two categories: traditional carving knives or non-traditional carving tools. While you create the next underwater Van Goth, any of your non-diving buddies (or diving buddies that just happen to be amazing cooks) can whip up some delicious chili for the cook-off. (Underwater Chili Cooking specialty not available due to aquatic logistics). But watch out, the competition is fierce! No matter what you are interested in, the weekend of the 25th/26th is shaping up to be the fall festival that can t be missed this year! For more details or to sign up for any of our classes please call the store at We will see you there! 3 P age 3 We have been in your neighborhood for over 15 years serving your diving, education, travel, sales, and service needs. Who better to take care of you but a neighbor. International Scuba is a 5 Star Instructor Development Center. The store boasts a Platinum Course Director (instructor trainer) and over 70 years of experience amongst the group. Looking for a change of lifestyle come see us, we can help! 2540 Marsh Lane Suite 128 Carrollton Texas, Phone: Fax: info@internationalscuba.com The World s Best HAUNTED Dive Sites It s that time of year when haunted houses are popping up all over the place. Amusement parks, abandoned prisons, and creepy buildings of all sorts are turned into mazes of eerie sounds and sudden surprises. In addition to these fabricated thrills, divers have the unique opportunity to visit some genuinely haunted sites far below the ocean surface. TRUK LAGOON In the early morning twilight of February 16th, 1944, the United States military launched Operation Hailstone above Truk Lagoon which served as the home base for the Imperial Japanese Navy. In the short span of two days, the US sank 47 ships and shot down 270 aircraft. This historic battleground is now home to some of the most exciting, pristine, and haunted wreck dives in the world. Aboard the Houki Maru, a military transport ship carrying a cargo of trucks, divers report hearing the sound of car engines turning over. Similar sounds emanate from the engine and boiler rooms of the Fuji Kawamaru. Countless Japanese sailors and pilots lost their lives during the attacks. Only several hundred bodies have ever been recovered. Perhaps these spirits trapped in time are still going about their duties while we divers can only observe the aftermath. LAKE HURON The US Great Lakes have some of the most beautiful fresh water wrecks in the world. Volatile weather that can turn at any moment has sent many a ship and crew to their watery graves. One of the best is the wreck of the Defiance in Lake Huron. In 1854, this schooner collided with another ship, the Audobon, on a foggy night as it returned to harbor. Both ships sank in minutes, although lifeboats were deployed and all crew members saved. So what makes this such a haunted dive spot? Both ships sank perfectly upright, side-by-side with their masts intact, and no visible signs of the collision. Combine this with the preservation power of the cold, fresh water and you have a pair of ships that look like they are fit to hoist sail and continue on their journeys despite sitting almost 200 feet below the surface. RMS RHONE On October 29th, 1867 (just two days before Halloween), the steamship Rhone crashed and sank off the coast of Salt Island in the BVIs. Detoured from her stop in St. Thomas due to an outbreak of Yellow fever there, the Rhone and her sister-ship the Conway anchored in the Great Harbor of Peter Island to wait out the impending storm. The storm that did hit was a class five hurricane that threatened to send both ships crashing into the shore. After moving all passengers to the Rhone (considered the superior and safer of the two ships), both captains cut anchor and made way for the channel, scrambling for the relative safety of the open ocean. To keep anyone from being tossed about and hurt on the wild seas, the Rhone passengers were tied to their beds for safety. Needless to say, this was a fatal error. With less than 250 yards to go until they would be safe in the open ocean, the Rhone was suddenly tossed onto Black Rock Point and split open. Within seconds, the cold sea water hit the hot boilers and the ship blew apart. There was no time to untie the passengers and 123 people went down with the ship. To this day, you can still see Captain Wooley s silver teaspoon among the wreckage and look through some of the portholes through which the ill-fated passengers watched the sea rise around them. To many, Halloween is a time for the living to meet the supernatural forces that haunt our world. For divers, we can visit these haunted places and many more year-round. So the next time you find yourself descending onto the wreckage of some unfortunate ship wreck, keep your eyes and ears open...

5 P age 5 Meet Your IS Team Member Brent Beck Q: How did you get started diving? A: A buddy of mine in 1988 told me he had just taken a SCUBA class and how much he liked it. I was somewhat impressed, but nothing to write home about. Around that time, the company I worked for hired a mechanic who was a SCUBA Instructor. We worked alongside for a while, the whole time telling me how great SCUBA was and I should try it. Well, I guess it didn t take long. This instructor taught my Open Water and I have been blowing bubbles ever since. Q: Number of years diving? Number of years as professional? How many dives? A: I ve been a bubble Junkie for 26 Years. I just got my Dive Master certification this past May I have officially logged 135 dives but, this does not include the 1990 s and some of the 00 s. I learned the hard way that every dive needs to be logged. Q: What brought you to International Scuba? A: I was looking for the best dive shop to go professional, as I wanted to learn the correct and safest ways. From what I have seen and what I know, International Scuba is the best dive shop in Texas and possible the country. Q: Tell us something about yourself that your diving friends would be surprised to learn. A: When I was in my teens, I worked at Straw Hat Pizza Palace as the in-house magician; my stage name was El-Brento. Q: If you could leave tomorrow to live in the islands, where would it be? A: If you make me choose, I would live in St. Croix. I have a lifelong friend there who works in a dive shop. The water is pristine, the beaches are beautiful and still part of the good ole USA. Q: What is your oddest diving experience? A: In the 1990 s a few of us were diving Lake Whitney. We spent a good amount of time underwater then, when we got out of the water, one of the guys told us they found what looked like a lunch box or possibly a money strong box. He explained that he took a few visual readings at the surface so he could locate it later. After we returned home, the box was all we talked about for a couple weeks; there could be a fortune in that strong box. We knew that Lake Whitney had been a few farms before flooding, so we just had to go back and bring this box to the surface. Two weeks later we went back to Lake Whitney, it took about a full tank of air but we found the box and brought it to the surface, or should I say we found the Brick, that s right, it was just a brick. Dang!!! Q: What is the one tip you would like to share with a new diver? A: If piece of equipment breaks or if there is something that delays or even prevents you from diving or even cancels your plan remember, it s Just a Minor Setback. Don t worry, have fun above the water, there will always be another time to blow bubbles. Q: If you were to come back as a fish in your next life what kind of fish would you be? A: I am thinking a Whale Shark. That way I would see a lot of divers and snorkelers who would want to be beside me and swim with me underwater. I love making new friends. Don t forget to Like International Scuba on Facebook! Read our latest news, hear from others in your dive community, and enter all our contests. Great friends and great rewards are waiting for you!
