This week marks the 26th Annual Shark Week hosted by Discovery Channel. Divers and non-divers alike hold their breath as they wait to catch glimpses of Great White sharks breaching while they capture prey during the program Jaws Strikes Back. Viewers get a taste of the mysteries of shark biology in the show Zombie Sharks. Each night you can also submit all your burning shark questions through Facebook or Twitter to be answered by celebrities and shark experts during the Shark After Dark talk show. Over the years, Shark Week has evolved into a mixture of good scientific fact and exaggerated entertainment-value centered shows. But we shouldn t forget that the original intent of Shark Week was to bring awareness and respect to the great predators of the ocean, not to scare us away from them. Sadly, too many people come away from these TV shows thinking that sharks are incredibly dangerous, when in fact they pose very little threat to humans. (Movies such as Jaws and Sharknado don t help the cause much either). So I challenge you to tear down the misconceptions of sharks and share some fun, interesting, and innocent facts with your friends. Together we can show the world that sharks are to be appreciated and protected, not feared! Cheers! FUN SHARK FACTS You can see a shark s ears, but their inner ear can track the sounds of prey from over 800 feet away There are nine known species of walking sharks Shark olfactory glands have a directional sense, meaning they can tell whether a smell is coming from the right or the left of them Sharks have lived on earth for more than 180 million years, evolving even before the dinosaurs Sharks can t develop cancer, so scientists are hoping that studying shark blood samples will lead to a breakthrough in anti-cancer medications Some species of sharks lay eggs while others give birth to live young Sharks have more nerve endings in their teeth than humans do on their fingertips In New York alone, people are bitten 10 times more each year by other people than worldwide by sharks Experts estimate that over 100 million sharks are killed annually for their fins, making humans the most dangerous predator in the ocean

From deep walls to inland caverns to wreck dives to diving with sharks and dolphins, the Bahamas offers a little bit for everyone. Officially the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, it boasts over 700 islands, cays, and islets along with over 180,000 square miles of ocean. Aboard the Carib Dancer you will experiences the famed marine park of the Exuma Cays just south of Nassau. The park spans 176 miles with sweeping coral reefs full of apex predators like barracuda and grouper down to the smallest invertebrates. Now he terrorizes instructors and students alike as a Master Scuba Diver Trainer. Chip likes to go to the extreme highs and lows as both a diver and an airplane pilot, but don t let his daredevil personality fool you, he s a real charmer and very patient with his students. Q: How did you get started diving? A: I started as a snorkeler and I just wanted more fun and experience. Scuba diving was the logical next step. Q: Number of years diving? Number of years as professional? How many dives? A: Six years diving, four years as a pro, and over 500 dives and counting. Q: What brought you to International Scuba? A: I was looking for some snorkeling gear and stopped by International Scuba to check out the selection. I was so impressed by the shop and the staff that I came back to learn and eventually teach with them. Q: Tell us something about yourself that your diving friends would be surprised to learn. A: I actually do things outside of diving and flying! Although, nothing immediately comes to mind... Q: If you could leave tomorrow to live in the islands, where would it be? A: Cozumel. It s just a really cool place with some great diving. Q: What is your oddest diving experience? A: I would say every dive is my oddest. There are always new experiences and things to discover that make for wonderful stories later. Q: What is the one tip you would like to share with a new diver? A: Relax and enjoy it. Diving should be fun so make sure you are having a good time. Q: If you were to come back as a fish in your next life what kind of fish would you be?
