You must obtain a passing grade in the lab by itself in order to pass the course. 2. Grades will be weighted as follows: Assignments (weighting will vary) 90% Quizzes: 10% 3. Lab attendance is mandatory, and you must fully participate in an experiment (and the subsequent assignment) in order to get credit for the associated assignment. 4. All laboratory assignments/reports are due at the beginning of the lab period. Late Policy: 10% grade deduction the day it is due; 20% additional deduction the next day; no credit thereafter. 5. ACADEMIC HONESY: Plagiarism is cheating. Sharing of work on INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENS is cheating. Sharing of work between groups on GROUP ASSIGNMENS is cheating. Violations of academic honesty of all forms will be reported and may result in an F in the course. See lecture syllabus for additional course policies.
2 Cal Poly State University San Luis Obispo, California General ME 236 Laboratory Safe Practice Procedures 1. Required Clothing. LONG PANS AND CLOSE-OED SHOES ARE REQUIRED A ALL IMES. Otherwise you will not be allowed to participate. 2. Personal Protective Equipment may be required. Equipment such as safety glasses or goggles, ear plugs, gloves, or steel-toed shoes, may be required with specific laboratory equipment or experiments. Specific warnings are listed below for this room and course. he laboratory manual will also provide warnings for specific experiments. Unless otherwise noted, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING HESE WIH YOU O HE LAB, and will not be allowed to participate without this equipment. 3. Know where general safety equipment is. ake note of the location and types of first aid supplies, safety equipment, fire alarm, telephone, MSDS binder, etc., available in the lab. See the list for this specific room, and take note of their locations. he instructor will provide information during the lab. 4. Use only the laboratory equipment the instructor allows. Do not use any equipment or tools without the instructor s permission. Do not touch any equipment in the laboratory that is not related to the experiment. 5. Instructor supervision required. Depending on the level of hazard of the experiment, some experiments require the instructor to be physically present at all times during operation. he instructor will provide you information on how to proceed if the instructor temporarily steps out. 6. Working in the laboratory outside of the scheduled time. Students are not allowed to use laboratories outside the normal laboratory session without prior written authorization by the instructor. Absolutely no working by yourself in the laboratories. 7. Be safety conscious. Although we make every effort to identify hazards in the laboratory, you must also be diligent. Beware of common laboratory or equipment hazards (Secure long hair and loose clothing when working around rotating equipment or open heat sources, for example). Report any unsafe or hazardous condition in lab (liquid spills, electrical hazards etc.) to the instructor. 8. Report all incidents. Any accident or illness must be immediately reported to the instructor and/or the Mechanical Engineering Department office. 9. In case of an emergency: dial 911 and tell the dispatcher: (1) that you are calling from Cal Poly, (b) your name and location on campus, and (3) the nature of the emergency 10. Know the evacuation routes. o evacuate the building in an emergency follow routes posted near the exits of the building. he instructor will point these out. 11. Please inform the instructor of any personal health issues that may affect your safety in the lab (for example, if you have photosensitive epilepsy, in case a stroboscope is to be used). 3 Safe Practice Procedures Specific to this Facility (13-203) 1. Mercury Barometer. Beware that the laboratory contains a mercury barometer. Although safely contained, mercury is a hazardous substance if spilled. Alert your instructor if the barometer breaks. 2. Food safe areas. Food is allowed in refrigerator, and consumption of food is allowed only at desks. 3. Safety equipment checklist. he following equipment is available in this room. ake note of their locations. First aid kit Eye Wash Blood-borne pathogens kit Mercury spill kit elephone Fire Alarm Fire Extinguisher Fume hood MSDS Binder Bin of extra safety glasses 4. Evacuation Routes. Evacuation routes are posted at each exit. Specific to this Laboratory (ME 236): 1. Experiments using hot plates and boiling water. Several experiments make use of a hot plate to heat water, up to and including boiling. Use mitts provided with the experiment to handle the beakers. LONG PANS AND CLOSE-OED SHOES ARE REQUIRED. 2. Bomb Calorimeter. his experiment involves the use of high-pressure oxygen and combustion of a flammable substance in a pressurized cylinder. LONG PANS AND CLOSE-OED SHOES ARE REQUIRED. SAFEY GLASSES MUS BE WORN A ALL IMES. Hazardous substances like fuels must be measured inside the fume hood. Follow the safety procedures for pressurizing the bomb, igniting the mixture, and depressurizing the bomb when testing is complete. he instructor must supervise the first time you pressurize the bomb, ignite the mixture, and depressurize he bomb. he instructor must always be present in the lab during pressurizing, ignition, and depressurizing of the bomb. o prevent injury in case of rupture, do not, at any time, put your face above the calorimeter lid. o prevent injury, never place your hand or face in the stream of exhaust gasses when depressurizing the bomb. Never fill the bomb with more than 1.5 grams of fuel. Never charge the bomb to more than 25 atmospheres of pressure. For general information go to Cal Poly Environmental Health and Safety:
