2 WL2100 SDI mA Pressure Transducer The HyQuest Solutions WL2100 is our latest generation of wet/dry pressure transducers. It allows the measurement of water head to a fine degree of accuracy and repeatability, due to full temperature compensation, and interfaces via SDI-12 or 4-20mA. The Submersible (Wet) transducer consists of a strain gauge bridge sensing element fitted to a housing. The strain gauge bridge is type 316 Stainless Steel and the house is a combination of Nickel plated brass and delrin. The electronic components are factory sealed within the housing. The electrical connection is made via a multicore vented submarine cable. The Dry transducer also consists of a strain gauge bridge sensing element fitted inside a power coated die-cast enclosure. The electrical connection is made via a multicore cable. 4 Connection as an SDI-12 Transducer **Note that the WL2100 is supplied set to the 4-20mA mode as default. Therefore to operate in SDI- 12 mode with minimal power consumption, the X14 parameter must be set to 0. That is 0X14+0! 5 4-20mA Mode and SDI-12 Mode 4-20mA Mode The transducers are supplied from the factory set to 4-20mA mode. That is, as the water depth varies between 0.000m and the maximum range, the current drawn will vary between 4.000mA and mA. So you may immediately use the transducer in 4-20mA mode without any configuration! Note that in 4-20mA mode, a measurement is taken every 4 seconds and the 4-20 output is automatically updated. The Logger should be set for a 15 sec warm-up, if the transducer power is switched on for a measurement. If you desire better resolution on the 4-20mA output, you can set the 4mA water level and the 20mA water level without affecting the calibration. As mentioned, it is preset at the factory so that the 4mA water level is 0.000m and the 20mA water level is set to the maximum transducer range (say m). Using the SDI-12 interface you can program a new 4mA water level with the X2 command and a new 20mA water level with the X3 command. (This can be done using the SDI-12 to RS232 interface, and a PC using HyperTerm. See Appendix A.) SDI-12 Mode The transducer when set to 4-20mA mode, will still operate using an SDI-12 interface, however it will draw 4-20mA of current. This is not desirable, so a special mode has been implemented that disables the 4-20mA of current draw, and the transducer will only draw about 2mA. This is more acceptable for an SDI-12 transducer. Simply set the extended command X14 to 0 by using the command 0X14+0! In this mode the transducer will only take a measurement when requested with an SDI-12 M command. Water Depth Calculation The WL2100 SDI-12 / 4-20mA Transducers calculate the water depth by measuring pressure. 6 SDI-12 / RS232 SELECTION The SDI-12 protocol has very strict timing requirements. The operator may use the SDI-12 to RS232 adaptor cable and then communicate using RS232 from a PC. This special mode is enacted on each command by proceeding each SDI-12 command with an ascii * rather than a break. When the ascii * is detected, all of the timing/break requirements of the SDI-12 are removed. Commands may be typed from a terminal program such as Hyperterm. Note you must use 1200 baud, 7 bits, even parity and no handshaking. The a in the following command description is the transducer address. The measurement command M and the concurrent command C will both return a time ttt of 002 indicating that the measurement will be ready in 2 seconds. Do not request data within this 2 second window, or an empty reply will be received. (In accordance with the SDI-12 protocol.) When an M command is in progress, the wet transducer will issue a service request a<cr><lf> when the measurement is complete and ready for a data request. (Again, in accordance with the SDI-12 protocol) Note 3. av!initiate Verify Command The Wet Transducer returns a0001<cr><lf> indicating that there is 1 measurement available and it will be ready in 0 seconds. When the Data command ad0! is issued the wet transducer will reply with : a+0<cr><lf> Internal address of A-D converter (0 to 7) Note 4. When X11 is set to 0, all forms of the measurement are returned a + +xxx.xxxx +yyyy.yyy +zzzz.zzz <CR><LF> When X11 is set to 3, only the water level in m is returned a +yyyy.yyy <CR><LF> Where : Pressure in kpa xxx.xxxx Pressure in psi yyyy.yyy Water Level in m zzzz.zzz Water Level in ft See the X11 command for other options. 8 SPECIAL COMMANDS The a in the following commands is the transducer address!!! axn! Return data associated with command n. The transducer will reply with a0001<cr><lf> The ado! command must be issued to get the actual data. axn+xxxx! Set parameter for command n. The transducer will reply with a0001<cr><lf> The ado! command must be issued to get the actual data. Set/Get Current Water Level Value in metres ax0! Get the water level in metres (from last measurement). ax ! Set the water level to m. (This calculates and saves an offset that is added to the water level) (See the ax9! command for viewing and clearing the offset) Get the Transducer Pressure ax1! Get the transducer pressure in kpa (from the last measurement). eg kpa Get/Set the 4mA Level ax2! Get the 4mA Level. ax ! Sets the 4mA Level to 2.5m When the water level is 2.5m then the 4-20mA loop will pass 4mA Get/Set the 20mA Level ax3! Get the 20mA Level. ax ! Sets the 20mA Level to 20.0m When the water level is 20.0m then the 4-20mA loop will pass 20mA Set/Get ID Number ax4! Get the transducer ID. ax ! Set the trasnducer ID. Acceptable values This value appears in the Identify command. Get the 4-20mA Output Hex Data ax5! Get the hex data that determines the 4-20mA output. 9 Set/Get the User Factor ax7! ax ! Get the User Factor. Set the User Factor to m/kpa Clear/Get the Water Level Offset ax9! ax ! Get the present Water Level offset in metres only! Clear the Water Level Offset to (OK for metres or feet) (Only the value is accepted) Set/Get Current Water Level Value in feet ax10! ax ! Get the water level in feet (from last measurement). Set the water level to ft (This calculates and saves an offset that is added to the water level) (See the ax9! command for viewing and clearing the offset) Set/Get Format of Measure Command Data ax11! ax11+3! Get the Format of the Measure Command Data. 0 => kpa + psi + m + ft 1 => kpa only 2 => psi only 3 => m only 4 => ft only Set the Measure Command to return 1 Data value in metres Set/Get the Temperature ax12! Get the Temperature ( o C) inside the transducer. (Can also be obtained using ad1! after a measure is performed) ax ! Set the Temperature to 23.5 o C. This is used to calibrate the temperature sensor. It is calibrated at the factory and so this command should be used with caution! Set/Get the 4-20mA mode ax14! ax14+0! Get the 4-20mA mode eg. 0=> 4-20mA is off : 1=> 4-20mA is on Set the 4-20mA mode to off (The factory default is 1 on) The user must set this parameter to 0 if transducer is used in SDI- 12 mode and must set it to 1 if transducer is used in 4-20mA mode. Get/Set the kpa Range of this Transducer *** DO NOT USE THIS COMMAND *** ax80! ax ! Get the kpa Range of this transducer element. (eg kpa) Set the range of this transducer element to 200kPa This parameter is set at the factory, and is dependant upon the pressure element used DO NOT change this value. 10 Get the Raw A-D Hex Data ax90! Get the raw A-D hex value from the last measurement (eg. Raw A-D value +00F7) Adjust the 4mA output to be exactly 4.000mA ax96+00! Output 4mA for 60 Secs, and save the calibration point. ax96+02! Output 4mA for 60 Secs, and increment the calibration point by 02. This command is repeatedly sent to adjust the 4mA calibration point. This is calibrated at the factory - mentioned here for completeness. (After this command is sent, the SDI-12 data line must be disconnected so that the 4mA can be accurately measured.) Adjust the 20mA output to be exactly mA ax97+00! Output 20mA for 60 Secs, and save the calibration point. ax97+02! Output 20mA for 60 Secs, and increment the calibration point by 02. This command is repeatedly sent to adjust the 20mA calibration point. This is calibrated at the factory - mentioned here for completeness. (After this command is sent, the SDI-12 data line must be disconnected so that the 20mA can be accurately measured.) Output the Calibration Table axcal! Dump the calibration table (This command is not SDI-12 compatible) Command used at the factory - described here for completeness. Output the Temperature Table axtmp! Zero Calibration Table *** DO NOT USE THIS COMMAND *** ax91+1! Offset the whole calibration table, so the present measurement is 0% (Perform a measure am! before zeroing) This is performed at the factory - described here for completeness. Linearise Calibration Table *** DO NOT USE THIS COMMAND *** ax92+1! Adjusts the 25%, 50% and 75% calibration table, so it is linear. This will destroy the complete temperature compensation! 13 Appendix A The following schematic is for an SDI-12 to RS232 adapter that can be used for any HyQuest Solutions SDI-12 transducer. The adapter will allow a transducer to be connected to a PC, and will communicate at 1200 Baud, 7 bits and even parity.
