Lessons 1-7 Review Game GOAL: Students check whether a set of ratios/rates is proportional. Setup: - Students work in pairs. - Students receive cards with rates represented in different formats (tables, graphs, word problems). Students place the cards face down and scramble them up (like memory). - Students receive a dice. - Students receive a sheet with the dice directions that say the following: - 1 and 6 = Simplify and check for equivalent unit rates - 2 and 5 = Graph and check if for a line through the origin (make a table of values!) - 3 = Check for equal cross products - 4 = Solve Break - Teacher displays Solve Break problems on screen Gameplay: - Students flip over one rate card. - Students roll the dice. - If the students roll a 1, 2, 3, 5, or 6 they proceed in their notebook by checking if the rates are proportional using the coordinating method listed on their direction sheet. - If the students roll a 4, they switch to a Solve Break problem from the screen. Students start at #1 for their first solve break. They solve the proportion in their notebook, showing all steps. After they solve they go back to rolling and the cards. If they get another solve break later, they move on to #2 and so on. - Play continues until students have checked for proportionality on all cards. Materials: Pg 1: Teacher Directions Pg. 2: Student work template. This is recommended for how they show their work. Use and printing is optional. Pg. 3: Student Cards. Print and cut student cards (recommended on cardstock or thick paper). Give one set per student pairs/teams. Pg. 4: Solve Break problems. Display during game on screen. Pg. 5: Answers. Either display these or check at the end.

Problem Letter Claim ( is/is not proportional to ). Evidence (Work shown using the method you rolled.) Reasoning (What did you see after doing the method that told you it was/was not proportional?)

A. Club Membership Fees I. Number of Months Cost ($) E. It rained 2 inches in one hour, then after two hours, it had rained a total of 3 inches. B. J. F. Rachel baked 3 cakes in 2 hours, 4 cakes in 3 hours, and 5 cakes in 4 hours. C. G. If Stephanie sells 4 necklaces, she earns a profit of $5. If she sells 5 necklaces, her profit is $6.25. Six necklaces sold gives her a profit of $7.50 and seven necklaces sold gives her a profit of $8.75. K. L. D. H. Jean has $280 in her savings account. Starting next week, she will deposit $30 in her account every week.

Solve Break 1) A 12-ounce bottle of shampoo lasts Enrique 16 weeks. How long would you expect an 18-ounce bottle of the same brand to last him? 3) A recipe that makes 8 jumbo blueberry muffins 1 calls for 1 2 teaspoons of baking powder. How much baking powder is needed to make 3 dozen jumbo muffins? 5) An 8-ounce can of tomatoes costs $1.14. A 12-ounce can costs $1.75. Which can of tomatoes costs the least per ounce? 2) A chicken can run at a top speed of 9 miles per hour. Find the top speed of a chicken in miles per minute. 4) Heather was out for a leisurely walk at a rate of 3 miles per hour. What was her speed in yards per minute? 6) Ingrid types 3 pages in the same amount of time that Tanya types 4.5 pages. If Ingrid and Tanya start typing at the same time, how many pages will Tanya have typed when Ingrid has typed 11 pages?

ANSWERS: Card Proportions: A) The cost is not proportional to the number of months. B) The number of gallons of gas is proportional to the number of hours. C) The cost is not proportional to the number of toppings. D) The cost is proportional to the number of lunches. E) The rain is not proportional to the number of hours. F) The number of cakes is not proportional to the number of hours. G) The cost is proportional to the number of necklaces sold. H) The money in the account is not proportional to the number of weeks. I) The degrees Fahrenheit is not proportional to the degrees Celsius. J) The cost is proportional to the number of bags of popcorn. K) The cost is not proportional to the number of hours. L) The cost is proportional to the number of movies. Proportional B D G J L Non-Proportional A C E F H I K Solve Break: 1) It will take Enrique 24 weeks to use 18 ounces of shampoo. 2) The chicken can run 0.2 miles per minute. 3) The recipe needs 6 and ¾ teaspoons of baking powder for 3 dozen muffins. 4) Heather can run 88 yards per minute. 5) The 8- oz. can is cheaper. 6) Tanya will type 16.5 pages when Ingrid types 11 pages.
