POTENTIAL HAZARDS Dust created by blasting operations Dust from material removed (i.e., lead based paints) Sparks caused by the blasting operation Static electricity build-up Pressure Slip, Trip & Falls Possibility of physical injury from the blasting operation Note: - Waha shall use metallic, synthetic and/or mineral grit, these types of abrasives have low dust creation and are able to be reclaimed for second or third use. They are also less of a health hazard than e.g. silica sand, copper slag, nickel slag, and staurolite which have varying degrees of hazard (typically free silica or heavy metals). If any other blast media is to be used for a specialist cleaning operation then a full risk assessment must be carried out and appropriate mitigation measures put in place. PREPARATIONS The work area is required to be checked for combustible gas prior to commencing operation and as required throughout the grit blasting activities. [See: Atmospheric Monitoring]

3 ' IN '''.., *94 0, c 3 of 5 A Safe Work Permit and Pre-Job Safety Meeting is required, [See: Safe Work Permits] [See: Confined Space Entry] 5. PROCEDURES The compressor, hose, nozzle and operator must be properly grounded to prevent build-up of static electricity. The air compressor must be able to deliver dry air at the correct pressure therefore they must have a water knock out pot/filter fitted which must be checked regularly and emptied as necessary during the blasting operation. Ventilation requirements for the work area are required to be established prior to work being initiated. The equipment operator must be able to stop the flow of material immediately, i.e., shut-off device located at nozzle. All scaffolding requirements have been met and the scaffold assembly is certified and appropriately tagged 6. Safety Standby A safety standby is required at grit blasting activities [See Section S001 - Safety Standby]. 7. PRECAUTIONS Typical safety equipment for operators that are open air blasting or blasting in a blast room include the following: Positive pressure blast hood or helmet - The hood or helmet includes a head suspension system to allow the device to move with the operator's head, a view window with replaceable lens or lens protection and an air feed hose.

4 Y, AI= qy^,),l coo' 4 of 5 Grade D air supply - The air feed hose is typically attached to a grade D pressurized air supply. Grade D air is mandated by OSHA to protect the worker from hazardous gases. It includes a pressure regulator, air filtration and a carbon monoxide alarm. Ear protection - ear muffs or ear plugs. Body protection - Body protection varies by application but usually consists of gloves and overalls or a leather coat and chaps. Approved respiratory protection is required to be used to guard against inhalation of air borne contaminants. [See Section P002 PPE] Safe handling procedures for grit blasting material, or material removed from surfaces are required to be developed prior to work being initiated. This will include approval of waste disposal methodology. [See: see also the MSDS reference in Section 0001] The joints of compressed air hoses, irrespective of diameter must be fitted with the correct size of whip lock restraint to prevent injury to the operator in the event of hose joint failure. [see Section W 007 Whip Lock 8. RESPONSIBILITIES The WAHA Representative, or his designate, is responsible for ensuring that safe sand blasting procedures are followed. The Contractor is responsible for ensuring: that all personnel are properly trained in the safe use of the equipment that the material hazards are identified that approved respiratory protection and personal protective equipment are used Regular medical testing of supplied breathing air is acceptable to International Standards CAN/CSA Z (R2005) Compressed Breathing Air.
