4 We will work to provide value for all of our sponsors and continuously seek to build on these partnerships where possible promoting both NSWACT Alpine and our sponsors to the alpine skiing community. 4.0 Purpose of Support All funds raised will be used solely in support of NSWACT Alpine s provision of athlete programs, scholarships and grants to NSWACT team members and the continued development of alpine skiing in New South Wales at the grassroots through to an elite international level. This includes the athlete pathways, training programs, competition support, sport development initiatives and other athlete supports. Presently NSWACT Alpine assists these athletes with a limited range of benefits and programs including fitness testing and training sessions and small financial grants to assist with the costs of travel and accommodation for interstate competitions. This Sponsorship program will help various athletes to realize their longerterm dreams. For a number of our athletes, assuming the correct support can be provided to them, have the potential to be up there with some of Australia s greatest male/female skiers and represent Australia on the world s stage at an Olympic Winter Games or a World Cup/Championship Alpine event. Since the 1952 Oslo Winter Olympic Games where Australia was first represented in Alpine skiing there has only been 40 successful Australians who have managed to compete at this level over 16 separate Olympics. Our most heralded Alpine skier is Zali Steggal, a four time Olympian. She finished her racing career after 2002 Salt Lake City and won a bronze medal in Slalom at the 1998 Nagano Games and a World Championship gold medal in This remains the only ever Winter Olympic medal won by an Australian in Alpine skiing. Part of NSWACT Alpine s vision is to provide the best athlete support it can deliver to its talented athlete pool in an effort to try and repeat Zali s incredible feat. We want to grow our financial coffers to underpin our discipline programs and athlete support to better our chances of achieving solid results in Alpine ski racing. The next Winter Olympic Games will be held in Sochi, Russia in February 2014 a few NSWACT athletes are already working hard towards securing their athlete qualifications to the Australian team. The team will be announced in January Why Alpine Skiing? Alpine has the greatest depth in terms of participation than any other Australian snowsports discipline. 4

5 Yet Alpine ski racing is an expensive winter sport the financial barriers can mean that sometimes not even the most talented athletes (nor coaches) can stay on in the sport over the longer run. NSWACT Alpine want competitive alpine racing to be available to as wide a range of talented and motivated athletes as possible. There are significant ongoing financial outlays necessary by athletes and their families for: apparel, equipment needs, on-snow coaching, fitness training, lift passes, club membership and race entries, race licenses, comprehensive overseas travel/competition insurances, athlete supports (fitness clubs, physiotherapy, sports psychology aids), local, interstate and overseas travel etc. For example, the typical cost for a junior FIS racer competing in both the southern and northern winters is approximately $40,000 per year. As athletes progress to higher levels these costs only increase. It takes a high level of dedication, determination and investment expenditure for a successful athlete to make a podium or be a regular on the World Cup circuit. Typically it will take a younger aged athlete a journey of more than 10 years to develop into a mature age athlete capable of becoming an international sports contender. Even for accomplished competition skiers there may still be limited financial resources available to that athlete. There is currently minimal direct funding support available in Alpine ski racing at the sub-elite and elite levels in Australia. Parents and families of State Team members provide almost all of the necessary financial support. By example, the Olympic Winter Institute currently operate and fund snowsports programs in Aerial Skiing, Mogul Skiing, Skier-Cross, Snowboard- Cross and Snowboard Halfpipe but not in Alpine. At the last Vancouver Olympic Games for the second games in a row Australia had no female representative and for the first time we also had no Alpine male competitors in the technical ski racing events of Giant Slalom and Slalom. With more funding and support at the state and national levels we can change that. Working co-operatively with Ski & Snowboard Australia, NSWACT Alpine through this supporters initiative wants to grow and strengthen its financial resources and make this support available to its talented athletes to give them the opportunity to keep pursuing their development in their chosen Alpine discipline (speed or technical) and to help foster future Olympic champions in Alpine racing 6.0 Current NSWACT Alpine Funding NSWACT Alpine supplies its existing athlete programs and services from a modest budget and this is a large constraint to increasing the support it can give these aspiring ski racers. 5

6 Limited annual income is received per annum, mainly by-way-of a share of Alpine discipline member registrations (via Ski & Snowboard Australia s membership platform). Occasionally there are a number of specific small government grants that may become available, although grants by their variable nature cannot be depended on too far. Clearly NSWACT Alpine needs to increase its funding from alternate sources if it wants to be able to sustain and increase the amount of support we provide each year to this group of young and developing athletes. Through this new NSWACT Alpine Patron, Sponsor and Supporter Program we are aiming to bolster the funds available to assist in increasing the benefits and services we are able to provide to our State team members and athlete programs. Should you require more detailed financial information on NSWACT Alpine please contact Annette Pilat, NSWACT Alpine Chair/NSW Snowsports Director at: nswalpine@live.com 7.0 About NSWACT Alpine NSW Alpine and ACT Alpine operate together through a volunteer joint committee (NSWACT Alpine) that works together with Ski & Snowboard Australia s (SSA) National Alpine Committee in the development of the National Alpine Athlete Pathway and in the delivery of the programs, which underpin that pathway. NSW Alpine also works closely with the NSW Race Clubs (Perisher Winter Sports Club and Thredbo Ski Racing Club) in relation to the holding of FIS (International Ski Federation) and Children s races and in the carriage of NSWACT Alpine programs. NSW Alpine also seeks NSW Government grants to assist with the running of the programs. Some of these current programs include: fitness training for Alpine athletes, Course Officials training, the Alpine Rising Stars Awards for Interschool athletes and assistance to the NSWACT Children s, Junior and Open teams. NSW Alpine is a discipline sub-committee of NSW Snowsports (also known as The New South Wales Ski Association Ltd. ABN: ). NSW Snowsports is the Peak Body and State Sporting Organisation (SSO) for snowsports in New South Wales. It has been representing and servicing snowsports enthusiasts, athletes and the sport since Please visit our website at (choose the Alpine tab) to find out more about NSW Alpine, including its office bearers, policies and plans. 6

7 8.0 NSWACT Alpine State Teams The selection criterion for the NSWACT teams can be found under the State Teams section on the Alpine tab at NSW Snowsports website (as above), as can the current teams. Alternatively for Territory athletes at ACT Snowsports website: under the Alpine tab). The NSWACT Alpine Open and Junior teams are named in June each year and the Children s team is named at the end of the Australian ski season. NSWACT State teams comprise the following groups. There are approximately 32 team members: o Children s team ages 10 to 15 years (20 members) o Junior team ages 16 to 19 years ) o Open team ages 16 to mid-twenties years ) 12 athletes Photo: 2012 NSWACT State Team/present:- Front row left to right Alexandra Pilat, Max Hough, Zac Kelly, Oliver Thompson & Ned Neill; Middle row Annabelle Hough, Hannah Sugarman, Tatiana Skwarko, Toni Hodkinson, Matilda Coates, Theodore Coates & Connor Leggett; Back row Madison Hoffman, Lucy Neill, Phoebe Wood, Ed Casey, Jack Adams.& Jake Bennett. 8.1 Selective NSWACT Alpine Athlete Profiles & Achievements: NSWACT Alpine has a number of exceptionally talented athletes with the ability to produce overseas podiums and a burning desire to be the best. Here are a few of the current State Team athletes wanting to go all the way on the world s stage. (Continued ) 7
