AGENT: Frank Hodowal fthod@aol.com A Note from the President April 2015 Well, this ski season ended with two great trips! First, Steve Kennedy led the Copper Mountain trip which I hear had fresh snow every day and everyone had a great time. Thank you, Steve! The last trip of the year, led by Michele Kinzler and Chuck Salisbury, had 38 Snowdrifters traveling to Banff. There were three mountains to choose from so everyone had something different to ski daily. On this trip, we held the 3rd annual Bier crawl and Poker Run so be sure to see the following pages for the trip report. Thank you, Michele and Chuck! It s hard to believe that my two year term as your President has gone by in the blink of an eye! Reflecting back on my term I have to say that it has been a lot of fun being the President of the Fox Valley Snowdrifters! I looked back at my first President s Letter and my goal was to have fun on our trips, at our events and at our meetings. I believe that mission has been accomplished. One of the challenges for us as a club is to make our ski trips, social events, etc. visible and available to those who want to join us. I believe that our values of fellowship, contribution and fun are prevalent in this club. Being President, it made me seek out other members and get to know them well. I found that you could ask someone to take on a role or task within the club and it was always met with enthusiasm and always exceeded expectations. I need to thank so many that have stepped forward to make this past year such a success. I apologize in advance for any names I may have left out! Frank When I agreed to be the President, I had only one requirement which was that Frank be the trip coordinator. Thank you, Frank, for planning such awesome trips! Chuck- You did so much in the previous two years as President that I only had to have fun! Thanks, Chuck. Tom and Pat You always step forward to assist and plan fun social events. Donna For taking minutes so that we could keep track of board items. Michele -For your active participation in trip planning. Mike For keeping the Snowdrifters informed of CMSC. Greg For bringing in new members and holding some great wine parties. Sarah For keeping the public informed of our meetings. 2 A Note from the President continued Pam For being our special party organizer. Tom and Pat, Bob and Steve for being trip leaders! You all did an impressive job. Chuck and Pam for being assistant trip leaders! Your assistance was invaluable. And finally, to all members that attended meetings, events, trips, ski crawls, poker runs, etc. You all make the Snowdrifters the best ski and social club in the Chicago area! I look forward to continuing to travel with the club throughout the world to top ski destinations. I encourage all members to become more involved in our club so we can continue to grow in membership but more importantly establish lifelong friendships! 3 Banff March By Michele Kinzler/Chuck Salisbury Our trip started at Kane County Fairgrounds with a busload of 23 Snowdrifters at 5:00 a.m. After collecting 9 more Snowdrifters at the airport, we departed to Calgary, Alberta, where we added 2 more skiers from Albuquerque and 2 from Austin. Our bus trip to Banff was only 1 ½ hours, but the party really started when we left Calgary. Thanks to our southern out-of-state members for picking up refreshments in Calgary the night before. They knew that everyone on the bus would be thirsty and ready to party. Our group of 38 was a sort of family reunion for the Ahasic family. Leo and Barb were joined by their 3 daughters, son-in-law, boyfriend (of Jacqueline), baby Brandt (grandson to the whole group)! Leo s brother, Gary, and Barb s sister, Laurel, completed the family. The other family group was the Hopp family. President, Joe, with his 2 sons kept the group in stitches. We arrived early at the Ptarmigan Inn, around 2:30 p.m. and everyone had the opportunity to check out downtown Banff degree weather greeted us and we wondered what we might find on the mountain for the next day. The group skied 2 mountains while in Banff: Sunshine Village and Lake Louise. Weather started out decent on Friday. Saturday was foggy, sleety and rainy. Sunday was snowy, and our last day, Monday, was a bluebird day. The club was able to provide 2 dinners during this trip. On Friday night, we walked a block to the Old Spaghetti Factory and on the last evening, we had après-ski in the bar, and then a pizza party in the Ptarmigan Inn, restaurant Meatballs. We had no major injuries during this trip!! I heard Chuck Salisbury say that he fell 6 times in 1 day. Michele Kinzler had a yard sale on an icy black trail. Greg Olson found himself on a trail named Waterfall and conquered the whole mogul run. Joe Hopp and his group loved the Garbage Chutes and found out why they were called garbage. The 3 rd annual Bier and Poker Run Ski Crawl was held on the last day at Lake Louise. Nearly ¾ of the group participated in going from lodge to lodge, getting a card at each stop (and beverage), and many skiers won prizes for high, low, and best hand at the end of the day. Thanks to Peggy, from New Mexico, and Joe Hopp for planning and getting prizes for the winners. Tim O Brien walked 25+ miles and took over 700 pictures. Katherine Kratzer hiked, visited museums and had a spa day at Rimrock Resort. Most of the nonskiers bought passes to Lake Louise, rode the gondola up to the top of the mountain and had lunch in the main lodge. Several groups took the bus to the hot springs for a long hot soak. Jeni, Alex, Michele and Tim took the bus from the base to see Chateau Lake Louise, which you can see from the top of the mountain. Someone took Chuck Atwell s skis from the ski bus, so when he got to his stop, he had the wrong skis (rentals, but all turned out ok). Dave Shriver had his 50 th birthday on Saturday. Pam Murray had a fall and couldn t get her boots back into her skis so she snowplowed down to us, while balancing on her skis. We helped her solve the problem. Gwen rented skis and loved them so much that she bought them! John Larson ended up skiing with 2 different length poles during the Bier Crawl because someone took the wrong pole. I could probably go on and on with many more stories and laughs. Thanks to everyone on this trip and l hope all of you plan to take another trip with the SNOWDRIFTERS SKI CLUB! 3

6 Social 3/28- Wine tasting at Greg's. If you didn't already sign up for this, I'm sorry but it's sold out. However, if you did sign up for it, you're in for a treat. Greg is a wine aficionado and excited to share with us his best picks from France. 4/19- End of season party at Fireside Grill in Sugar Grove. We'll meet at 5 p.m. for cocktails and 6 p.m. for dinner. There is a variety of menu options to choose from (see enclosed flier for options). Member News Congrats to Denise Brouillette and Tom Tourtellote on their engagement. Both Denise and Tom are Snowdrifters from Austin, Texas. They first joined the Snowdrifters on the 2013 Switzerland trip and returned on the 2015 Banff trip. We wish them the best and hope they can join us on many more future ski trips! Kate and Kevin Hopp are expecting their first child on April 22nd. Future Mom and Dad are very excited as well as Mags (the granddog). Nana and Papa are very excited as well. 8 Recipe This is a really fun easy treat for Easter. The kids love them. Bird s Nests Ingredients 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter, for greasing the muffin pan 6 ounces (1/2 bag) of semi-sweet chocolate chips 6 ounces (1/2 bag) of butterscotch chips 1 cup creamy peanut butter 6 ounces (1/2 of a large bag) of chow mein noodles 36 mini Cadbury eggs Instructions 1. Generously grease the wells of a muffin pan with the butter (this will help later when you are taking out the chilled nests). 2. In a large microwave-proof bowl, heat the chocolate and butterscotch chips in 30 second intervals until thoroughly melted, stirring after each increment.**it only took me two 30-second intervals. 3. Once melted, add the peanut butter to the chocolate/butterscotch mixture, mixing well until smooth and completely combined. 4. Carefully add the chow mein noodles, stirring with a wooden spoon or rubber spatula, until completely coated. 5. Using a large spoon, mold the mixture into the wells of your muffin tin, indenting the tops slightly with the back of the spoon. 6. Chill the nests until hardened, about 1 hour or so. 7. Once chilled, gently remove the nests from the muffin tin***i used a butter knife as a lever to pop them out-this seemed to work. 8. Place three eggs (or colored jelly beans!) on the tops of each nest. 8
