2 tadd dameron series good bait (1962) Background: Tadd Dameron was one o the most inluential comoser/arrangers in American music. Born in 1917, he wrote or bands led by Jimmie Lunceord, Count Basie, Billy Eckstine (many original comositions later erormed by the Dizzy Gillesie Orchestra were originally written or Eckstine), Ted Heath and Tommy Dorsey. He also arranged or Sarah Vaughan, Pearl Bailey and the underrated Kay Penton. Dameron led various grous or live gigs and recordings, and the musicians he layed with constituted a who s who o jazz. At one time or another his ensembles included Fats Navarro, Freddie Webster, Charlie Rouse, Kenny Clarke, Kai Winding, Wardell Gray, J.J. Johnson, Dexter Gordon, Miles Davis, Kenny Dorham, John Coltrane and Cliord Brown. Unortunately Dameron was institutionalized in Kentucky or drug ossession rom 1958 through While still in rison, he contributed several arrangements to a Blue Mitchell album on Riverside Records, and when he was released, Riverside wanted him to make an album o his own. The Magic Touch was the result, and this resulted in various comosing and arranging assignments, most notably or Benny Goodman, who commissioned several scores rom Dameron or his 1962 big band that made an historic tour o the Soviet Union. The Music: Good Bait had originally been written or Count Basie, and was coyrighted in Dameron also arranged the tune or the Billy Eckstine Orchestra, and when that ensemble olded, Dizzy Gillesie added the setting to his book, laying it requently. Basie began laying it in 1948 ater Gillesie oularized it. In 1962, ublisher Bregman, Vocco & Conn asked Dameron to arrange this or big band ublication, as well as other titles that he d comosed over the years that they owned. This version o Good Bait includes the unison brass line ater the instrumental solos. All o the BVC ublications had numerous errors in itch, rhythm and transosition. This ublication o Good Bait has been newly edited and corrected. Notes to the Conductor: Even though the Gillesie RCA Victor erormance is well-known, in my oinion it is a little ast, erhas the natural result o laying the iece very oten and wanting to make it more exciting. I you can ind it, the 1948 Salle Pleyel concert recording has an excellent temo. Good Bait should sound relaxed, with careul attention to dynamics. There are several sot dissonances in the writing, and I assure the band director that the notes have been double-checked or accuracy. The written iano art voicings were sulied by Tadd Dameron or the 1962 ublication and are included or reerence. We encourage the iano layer to ollow the chord changes and use the sulied voicings as a guide.
