1 2012 Kings Dominion Concert Band, Orchestra & Jazz Band Festival May 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, June 1 & 2 Dear Director: The following information is designed to assist your visit to Kings Dominion for the 2012 Concert Band, Orchestra, & Jazz Band Festival. Enclosed you will find the following: Kings Dominion Park Information Band Festival Information Sample Performance Evaluation Sheets We hope to see your group at the 2012 Concert Band, Orchestra, & Jazz Band Festival! 2 FINAL FESTIVAL INFORMATION DIRECTIONS: All concert bands, jazz bands and orchestra performances will take place at Hanover High School in Mechanicsville, Virginia. See attached map and directions. ENTERING AND EXITING KD: If your group decides to visit Kings Dominion prior to performing at Hanover High School you must have each student s hand stamped upon exiting the park. This will allow your group re-entry to Kings Dominion later in the day without any difficulties. There will be a vehicle-parking fee of $ Bus parking (25+ passengers) is free and the bus driver will receive a complimentary admission ticket at Group Admissions. REGISTRATION: Directors should report to the registration area at Hanover High School at least 30 minutes prior to the group s warm-up time. You should turn in three (3) sets of original scores with consecutively numbered measures. These will be returned to you after your performance. No photocopies will be accepted without documented permission. Directors should instruct their students to enter the auditorium to observe other groups only between performances. Students may not be unsupervised while at Hanover High School. WARM UP AREA: The band room is the only designated warm up area. Tuning devices are not available; however you are permitted to bring your own. Music stands will not be guaranteed in the warm up area. PERFORMANCE: Each group has 20 minutes to perform, which includes set-up, performing selections for adjudication, and clearing the stage. You must perform two selections. Please be considerate of others and keep your performance time within the designated limit. There will be a stage crew to assist you with setup and clearing. Music should be chosen at the director s discretion - preferably selected from the graded state school band/orchestra festival list. EQUIPMENT: The following equipment will be available: *Chairs *Concert bass drum 36 *Marimba (mallets not provided) *Music stands *Tympani 23, 26, 29, and 32 *Concert bells (mallets not provided) *Xylophone (mallets not provided) *Podium *Chimes (mallets not provided) *Grand piano Please bring any other equipment, such as mallets or a PA system, which you may need. 2
3 JUDGING PLAN: Comments Only: A director may choose to enter the festival and participate for Comments Only. The rating sheets will carry no letter grades for the judging categories and no final rating will be given. Adjudicators will only give comments and suggestions on the performance. Comments Only groups will be ineligible for awards. Festival Format Only: Ensembles choosing this option will receive a superior, excellent or good rating and will be given an award in honor of their achievement. Competition Format: As well as receiving a rating, ensembles will also be eligible for a first place, second place and third place award within their division. Grand Champion awards will be given to the group achieving the overall highest score within the following categories: Middle School Band and Orchestra High School Band and Orchestra Regardless of judging plan chose, one Outstanding Soloist will be recognized each event date with an award honoring their talent. AWARDS CEREMONY: The awards ceremonies are tentatively scheduled for 5:30PM on May 4 and 7:00PM on May 5, 12, 19 and June 1 & 2. The awards will be held in the Pine Pavilion area at Kings Dominion. The above time is only an estimate and subject to change. The Awards Ceremonies on May 11 & 18 are tentatively scheduled for 8:00PM and will take place at Hanover High School immediately following the final performance. TICKET INFORMATION: Your tickets will be mailed in advance via UPS if your order was received by the due date. Please give your ticket to the turnstile attendant upon entering the park. You DO NOT have to wait in the ticket purchase lines or go to Group Admissions if you have tickets in hand. If we received your full payment after the due date please proceed to Group Admissions (at the front gate behind the Season Pass Office) to pick up your tickets. They will be held under the name of the person that placed the order and they will need to show a valid ID to receive the tickets. Group Admissions is very busy on event dates so allow extra time if you need to pick up your tickets. You can purchase additional tickets the day of your visit at the Park Group Admissions office. Pricing for Day of Event tickets is located on the event website. Kings Dominion will not offer refunds, exchanges or rain checks on any tickets that are unused for your event date. If you have over purchased tickets please find someone to use them for your event date. Kings Dominion WILL NOT EXCHANGE THEM FOR TICKETS THAT ARE GOOD ANY DAY OF THE SEASON. 3

5 Directions to Hanover High School Hanover High School Chamberlayne Road Mechanicsville, VA (804) From West or I-295 I Take the 301 exit going north. Hanover High School will be approximately five miles on the left hand side. From I-95 I in Ashland (exit 92) Go east on Route 54 to Route 301. Go south on Route 301 past the Hanover Courthouse area and continue approximately five miles. Hanover High School will be on the right hand side of the road, next to Oak Knoll Middle School. To return to Kings Dominion As you leave Hanover HS; take Route 301 north to Route 30. Turn left on Route 30; this will take you to the park.
