As we say, It don t get any better. Its jazzy to see so many new members we urgently need new members or old to help with various jobs. Please call myself, Ted or Julie o As Brian said Our Club has done it again - what an afternoon 3 June, to be entertained by The Jazz Kings & Nicole Parker-Brown. A classic lineup of Australian musicans who have toured the world with the best entertainers - this new group with some very well- known faces, made their debut on the Sunshine Coast and really rocked the place How about Nicole & Peter dueting the Eddie Cantor classic Makin Whoopee does fun music get any better Yep! Drummer Rodney Ford singing a Bossa version of Error Garner s Misty Trumpet & vocals from Peter, guitar solos from Mark & Gordon plus outstanding bass from John (Conley), drums and vocals from Rodney all gave Nicole great support to make the afternoon a musical delight (and the dancers loved it too)- can t wait to have them back thanks again to the SCJazz Club committee for bringing them to the Sunshine Coast. JULIE S Report Hi Jazz Loving Friends, The Mother s Day Tribute at Currimundi Hotel Function Room went off well though numbers were significantly down on those we have been attracting at our new home, Caloundra Power Boat Club. Still, Russell Bayne & the Session Band, as usual, hit all of the right notes and entertained all who attended. The Mums really enjoyed receiving the white and silver rosettes plus the favor boxes of chocolates on the tables, also proved very popular. John and I managed to make it to this great day by a whisker, having only returned that day, from a whirlwind trip around the world in 21 days on a chartered Qantas 747 an amazing and unforgettable trip to say the least, visiting the highlights of 7 countries. Sadly, while we were away, the beautiful and brave Judy Bennett (wife of our Treasurer Bernie) lost out to cancer Bernie really appreciated the attendance of so many from the Jazz Club at her Celebration of Life. We have also lost another long time member in past weeks Brian Emeny and his dear wife Clarice will move to live with family north of Gympie. VALE Judy & Brian We were very excited to have Nicole Parker Brown & The Jazz Kings, led by the super showman himself, Peter Uppman first time for this top group at the Sunshine Coast but surely not the last. JUNE JULY 2018 I 3 The big news is that we were invited to be part of the Qld Cabaret Festival and The View from Madeleine s Couch will be highlighted during the festival 12 th 30 th June 2018 make sure you check out their web site for details (this will surely raise the profile of the Sunshiine Coast Jazz Club) We are having 2 gigs for June and 2 for July but then drop back to the usual 3 rd Sunday of each month. All 4 groups for June and July are top class acts and in the midst of this we also have the Nambour Winter Jazz Fest,(see advert in this newsletter) of which our club is a sponsor 21 July. Hold onto your hats and check out what we have in store, for the coming months to Jazz the year out! Cheers for now Julie (President) Curramundi HOTEL MOTHERS DAY TRIBUTE Long time Fans Trev & Heather Chalk BriAN FANE S REPORT RUSSELL BAYNE & THE SESSION BAND Sunday 13 th May Mother's Day The crowd at the Currimundi Hotel Function Room had barely settled and enjoying the lovely decorated tables when Peter Uppman opened the afternoon with Louis Prima's Just a Gigalo' -we all knew the words - and joined in the chorus. What a start to one of the best fun musical afternoons the Club has enjoyed. All first class musicians who enjoy entertaining. It Had to be You, Sweet Caroline Together, Old Rockin' Chair were some tunes in the first set. A break, Kenny Ball's Midnight in Moscow, Samantha then more playing of requests from the audience. Another pleasant surprise, we were then entertained by our lovely President Julie who belted out a sterling vocal of Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey to the crowd's delight. How could you forget Russell's guitar solos, they are always memorable,,pat on drums and vocal, Peter's high note trumpet solos and vocals, how about Mike's vocals and trombone. These guys are world class and have played with the top names around the world, and we have them playing for the Sunshine Coast Jazz Club!!! Sunny Side of the Street Moondance {never thought we would hear Van Morrison] Tom Jones It's Not Unusual given a great workout from Peter and then a wonderful solo from Jo on Keyboard boogieing Freddie Slack's Down the Road Apiece. Time for the finish and what a finish, a masterful rendition of one of the all- time Jazz Classic's St. James Infirmary Blues with the audience singing and joining on the dance floor all doing their own low down boogie!! Always an encore and we all waved and shouted to Minnie the Mermaid Do we want Russell and the Session Band again?? WE SURE DO!! President Julie joins Peter & Russell s Session Band
