Save the Harbor/Save the Bay s Better Beaches Program shares Boston Harbor, the harbor islands and our region s public beaches with these underserved communities. In June, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay awarded $202,732 in Better Beaches Program small grants and $60,984 in additional organizational support to 36 organizations in 9 beachfront communities and waterfront neighborhoods from Nahant to Nantasket including first time grantees in Lynn, East Boston, working regionally. In turn, these groups leveraged our funds to support 163 free concerts, beach festivals, kayaking and sailing camps and lessons, movie nights on the beach, story hours, bicycle rides to the beach, and sand sculpting competitions. Save the Harbor also brought Life s a Beach festival programming to nearly 10,000 people at 8 events in 7 Better Beaches communities, featuring performers from the Boston Circus Guild, Art on the Shore, and Save the Harbor s troupe of storytelling pirates as well as Youth Environmental Education Program staff. These free events and programs have brought new and diverse audiences to our region s public beaches and have generated new enthusiasm and support for their beaches and our work among the 65 organizations that we have supported since To learn more about Save the Harbor s Better Beaches Program, please visit our blog, Sea, Sand & Sky at and our website

2 Better Beaches Program Dear Friend of Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, Hull 2018 Nantasket 2018 East Boston 2018 January 9, 2019 Save the Harbor launched the Better Beaches Program in 2008 to help local communities and beaches friends groups create and sustain free events and activities on the region s public beaches from Nahant to Nantasket, as recommended by the Metropolitan Beaches Commission, which we help lead and manage for the Legislature. Over the course of more than a decade, our community partners in Nahant, Lynn, Revere, Winthrop, East Boston, South Boston, Dorchester, Quincy and Hull have leveraged $886,668 in small grants received from Save the Harbor/Save the Bay and the Department of Conservation and Recreation with $3,281,200 in organizational support from Save the Harbor and cash and in-kind contributions from local government and small businesses for a total investment of $4,167,904 in 647 free events and programs for the nearly 2 million regional residents who live within a short ride or drive to the beach. This year, Save the Harbor awarded more than $202,000 in direct grants from funds we raised at the Harpoon Shamrock Splash and from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts investment in the Better Beaches program. These awards supported 36 organizations in nine beachfront communities and waterfront neighborhoods from Nahant to Nantasket. In turn, our community partners leveraged our funds to support 163 free concerts, beach festivals, kayaking and sailing camps and lessons, movie nights on the beach, story hours, bicycle rides to the beach, and sand sculpting competitions that brought over one million people to our region s public beaches in This year Save the Harbor brought Life s a Beach festival programming to 8 Better Beaches grantees events throughout the summer and fall. Life s a Beach festivals included acrobats, aerialists, jugglers, and stilt walkers from the Boston Circus Guild, storytelling pirates, art on the shore with Artist-in-Residence Robyn Reed and visiting artist Andres Amador, and enrichment from our Youth Environmental Education Program staff. So far, the program has reached 9,825 people in 7 communities. A ninth event in January of 2019 will finish out the year. We have been delighted to watch over the last decade as these free programs have become an important part of the community calendar. As you will see in the attached report, our Better Beaches Program is a powerful way to share the benefits of the Boston Harbor cleanup with kids and families from all of Boston s neighborhoods and with the regions s residents and visitors. You can also download a PDF of the report on our website. Winthrop 2018 Planning for the 2019 season is already underway, and we are pleased to report that the Legislature and the Baker-Polito Administration included funds to support the program once again this year. Thanks as always for all of your support. We can t wait to see you on the beach in All the best, Revere 2018 Patricia A. This year, the pledge and plunge fundraiser raised more than $50,000 to support Save the Harbor/Save the Bay s Better Beaches Program Partnership with the Department of Conservation and Recreation, which provides a spectacular summer of free concerts and beach festivals, sand-sculpting competitions, and youth programs on the region s public beaches in Lynn, Nahant, Revere, Winthrop, East Boston, South Boston, Dorchester, Quincy and Hull. Thanks to everyone who helped us raise funds to support beach events on the region s public beaches. On Sunday, March 11th, hundreds of costumed splashers plunged into the cold waters of Boston Harbor at the BCYF Curley Community Center at M Street Beach in South Boston for the Harpoon Shamrock Splash to benefit Save the Harbor/Save the Bay. 12 East Boston T i m e s - F r e e P r e s s Saturday, July 28, 2018 Artist Andres Amador Returns to Constitution Beach By John Lynds printed out sketches, Amador hands participants a rake, a sketch and has them get to work alongside him to create a magnificent work of art that only last a few hours. After providing sand rakes to all participants and explaining some basic techniques, residents of all ages got to work in helping Amador create this large scale natural art on the sand. Amador has called his art Playa Paintings and began doing these works around the country since The idea came to me while studying geometry, ancient architecture and crop circles, he said. Our ancestors created their magnificent works with very simple tools, but armed with great geometric insights. From there the art has evolved into many different styles over the years a the medium guides the exploration. San Francisco-based artist Andres Amador returned to Constitution Beach Friday to turn the wet sand at low-tide into a temporary piece of visual art with the help of the community residents. For the past five years, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay has brought Amador out for a weekend to take part in the non-profits Better Beaches Program that provides free events and programs on public beaches from Nahant to Nantasket. On Friday afternoon Amador encouraged participants, who were mainly Save the Harbor/Save the Bay staffers, East Boston YMCA summer campers and some curious beach-goers, to join in the fun of creating his unique beach art. Residents of all ages had a blast for several hours at Eastie s only beach helping Amador Working with sand rakes and teams of volunteers, Amador created mandalas in the sand between the high and low tide lines that last for just a few hours on Constitution Beach, said Save the Harbor/Save the Bay s Bruce Berman. He had the help of Save the Harbor/Save the Bay s Youth Environmental Education program staff and 200 kids from the East Boston YMCA. Amador s artwork, which can span over 10,000 feet, is achieved only during low tide. Armed with dozens of Amador generally gives himself about two hours to work. However, as more people join in and help him he can do larger or more ambitious works. But everything must happen during the low-tide, and ideally during the window in which the tide is at its lowest. Amador said he does this type of art because it gets him out to the beach and in the fresh air to experience the elements of sun or wind or rain. I do it because it brings me peace and focus, he said. Ultimately, I do it because of the joy of the challenge. The art form feels to me to be an exploration of the various ways to make large-scale creations. Over the years I have found a number of methods, and new ones continue to present themselves as I explore deeper. This year I purchased a copter with camera attached so that I can make the art and take photos at the landscape level in locations never before available to me. That has opened up whole new avenues of exploration. So I suppose I do it because the art form continues to delight me with possibilities. And truly, it s always a good day at the beach. Amador has been featured by the BBC, CNN, Discovery Channel, and numerous TV programs and periodicals globally.
