1OO YEARS 1OO BOATS The 100 Years 100 Boats event was conceptualised in July, A number of South Curl Curl members discussed the idea of gathering 100 surf boats and crews in memory of the Gallipoli landings 100 years prior. The event also looked to engage the school communities by asking for their participation in providing a wreath to each boat in return for a Lone Pine sapling. This meant 100 schools, 100 boats, 100 saplings and 100 wreaths. It was an occasion that will long be remembered when boats, representing Australia, New Zealand and Turkey landed on the beach first. Support from Greg Broome and Collaroy SLSC was critical to the success. The event took place on their beach during normal patrol hours. Greg and the Collaroy team were supportive from the outset and made a significant contribution to the event both in the lead up and on the day itself. The event showcased the best of what Surf Lifesaving has to offer: Engagement with the community Honouring the memory, sacrifices and principles of those past Developing strong connections with local and state governments, other government bodies and various arms of the military Cementing of another strong SLS sponsor Beko High level media exposure for the SLS movement The organising committee consisted of the following Life Members from South Curl Curl SLSC; Janice Russell, Bryn Russell, Wayne Settree, and Lisa Settree who all put in hundreds of hours of work in the months leading up to Anzac Day.

PRESIDENT S REPORT DOUG MENZIES BRANCH PRESIDENT So I must start my report by thanking you, our members, our Stars, for the great contribution you make to patrolling our beaches, maintaining your qualifications, obtaining new awards, training our new members, developing our young people and keeping our Life Saving Clubs at the heart of our local communities. 6 It gives me great pleasure to present and commend to you the 2014/15 Surf Life Saving Sydney Northern Beaches Annual Report. It is truly an honour to serve and provide stewardship to such a great organisation filled with passion, commitment, skills, expertise and professionalism. We were honoured to have an official Raising of the Flags ceremony on the sands at North Steyne Beach, with the Hon. Stuart Ayres, the then NSW Minister for Police and Emergency Services and current Minister for Sport and Recreation, representing the Premier, along with Kerry Clancy, Deputy President Surf Life Saving NSW, to formally herald in the start of our surf season. From the Raising of the Flags on September 20, 2014, an estimated 3.09 million members of the public accessed our beaches and again our 21 Surf Life Saving Clubs met their Duty of Care in keeping our beaches safe and supporting our communities to access the golden sands we so dearly love. Our members selfless commitment in keeping the community safe, on so many occasions they put their own lives at risk for someone they have never met, to you, on behalf of the community, I say thank you. I thank you, our members, our Stars, for the great contribution you make to patrolling our beaches, maintaining your qualifications, obtaining new awards, training our new members, developing our young people and keeping our Life Saving Clubs at the heart of our local communities. To our 5,632 patrolling members who conducted 155,125.5 voluntary patrol hours, undertook 35,570 preventative actions, 1,319 rescues and 2,288 first aid services, thank you. Our members also achieved some 6,000 new awards, which included new members gaining their award as well as many of our existing members obtained a higher qualification, adding to our standards on the beach. The hours mentioned above do not include the thousands and thousands of hours that our members spend keeping themselves fit, training new members, keeping their own qualifications current, assessing new members, providing support services to our patrolling members by acting as Duty Officers, Radio Operators, RWC Operators and our TIPS support members. Your contributions are to be commended. Of our 19,391 members, some 45 per cent are under the age of 18 years, which tells me that the future of our movement is assured. To our members who support our young members through our Nippers program, competition, coaching and training and those involved with fostering youth development activities thank you so much, in particular, to Dematic ANZ/ASEAN Chief Executive Officer, Glen Borg I thank you for your continued and generous sponsorship of our Junior Life Saver program. Our Clubs have also been quite successful in their surf sports achievements and Darren Warrener, our Director of Surf Sports, has detailed those in his report. However, I congratulate the Branch team taking out the NSW Interbranch title, to Newport SLSC for winning the NSW Open Championships and for coming second at the Australian Open Championships (our highest placed NSW Club) and to Manly, congatulations being State Nipper Champions again. The achievements of our members throughout the season were many. I will not try and cover all, but will highlight a few, which included: Adoption of a new Branch Constitution in May 2015, a very big thank you to our Rules and Constitution Committee and, in particular, to our Deputy President, Shannon Job for leading this very successful process; Finalisation of a lease to secure our Surfcom Building at Fisherman s Beach; Development of a Strategic Directions paper identifying the important issues to be addressed by the Branch and Clubs over the next few years. Many of these items identified have been actioned; New sponsorship with Lipton Ice Tea, filling a gap left from a previous sponsor; Achieving a favourable financial result given the loss of our Ausgrid sponsorship. Congratulations to our Director of Finance and Administration, Lance Barnes, the Finance Committee, our CEO and staff for making this happen.

Restructuring the Surf Life Saving School to bring into the operations of the Branch; Seeing our Andy Cross surf the 129 beaches that are home to our 129 NSW Surf Life Saving Clubs promoting the Gold Medallion, our highest Surf Life Saving award; Being present at the 100 Year 100 Boats recognising the Centenary of Anzac Day, was truly amazing. What a great event. To the members of the South Curl Curl SLSC, Collaroy SLSC, to Lisa and Wayne Settree and Janice and Bryn Russell, congratulations and well done. The new Constitution also reflected the organisational structure to that used by Surf Life Saving Australia and Surf Life Saving New South Wales, which resulted in the removal of the role of Director of Sponsorship and Marketing, the role held for quite some time by Rob Berry. So, as a consequence, we said thank you and farewell to Rob from the Branch Executive. Rob had for many years been very active in promoting our movement and worked closely with Streets, Ausgrid, Lipton Ice Tea, Westfield, Manly Daily and Bill Buckle to name just a few sponsors. Rob, well done and thank you. I would like to acknowledge and commend to you the Branch Golf Day fundraiser to support our Interbranch team, Bob Langbein and his team, thanks so much. Also our Branch Melbourne Cup fundraiser to raise funds for life saving activities, in our second year and growing. A huge thank you to Jen Huston, Kevin Green and all your support team, thank you so much. To all our sponsors, thank you so much, as without your tangible, financial backing we could not support the operations that our Clubs undertake on the beach, in keeping our community safe and helping to support and develop our young people. It was with pride that I was able to award The President s Award to the Narrabeen SLSC The Narra Water Rats youth program, targeting the 14 to 20 year-old members, to actively and directly engage them within the Club and the surf life saving movement. I would also like to thank all those members who train, assess, facilitate, undertake support operations (Radio Operators, Duty Officers, Rescue Water Craft Operators) and surf sports officials and coaches thank you for the additional time you so freely give. To our community leaders who continually support, not only our Branch, but each of the surf Clubs in their area. So, to our Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Bronwyn Bishop, NSW Premier Mike Baird, NSW Minister for Planning Rob Stokes and Minister for Family and Community Services and the Minister for Social Housing Brad Hazzard and to our three Council Mayors Cr Jean Hay AM (Manly), Cr Michael Regan (Warringah) and Cr Jacqueline Townsend (Pittwater) thank you so much. I would like also to acknowledge and thank all of our 21 Clubs, their members, management committees and, in particular, the Presidents of each Club for your support and valuable contribution to support the running and development of this magnificent Branch. To my fellow directors, Deputy President Shannon Job, Director of Rescue Services Geoff Raper, Director of Education and Assessment Adrienne Lowe, Director of Youth and Membership - Tracey Hare-Boyd, Director of Surf Sports Darren Warrener, Director of Finance and Administration Lance Barnes and Director of Sponsorship and Marketing Rob Berry, on behalf of all the membership I thank you for your outstanding contribution and results achieved during the season. It is a privilege to work with such a cohesive and talented group, who give so much to support the activities of our Clubs. Thank you. Our wonderful staff headed by our Chief Executive Officer Steve McInnes, thank you so much. Jen Huston, Marcial Nunura, Belinda Dobson, Kristen Raper and John Taylor, your support to our members is amazing. Well done to all. Finally, to our members and to your families who allow you to do what you do, thank you so much, as without you doing what you do our community would be so much the poorer. 7

CEO REPORT STEVE McINNES CEO Fellow Lifesavers, It is hard to believe that another year has raced by. With the season bookended by the official Raising of the Flags at North Steyne, capped off with the last day of patrols on April 26, 2015 and the amazing 100 Boats Anzac Day 100 Year Gallipoli commemorations it was a memorable season. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our volunteer lifesavers for their dedication to our mission - to provide a safe beach and aquatic environment throughout Sydney s Northern Beaches and to report mission accomplished with no lives lost whilst beaches were open during our patrol times. Thank you also to the partners and families of our members for your support. Andy went on to win the SLSA Volunteer of the Year Award to cap off a great season. Max Brooks (Newport) was named NSW Athlete of the Year, whilst the Newport SLSC U 19 Male Water Competition Team was named Team of the Year. Georgia Miller (Manly LSC) was named the NSW Young Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row. Louis Tassone (North Curl Curl SLSC) was named Surf Sports Official of the Year. Freshwater s Tod Rowbotham was awarded Rescue of the Year for his heroic rescue of a surfer in April, and Zachary Dibben and Jessica Cotterill of Dee Why SLSC were awarded the Initiative of the Year for their innovative After Dark Youth Program. Well done to all on these great achievements Thank you to all of our sponsors and supporters, new and old. The sponsorship arena has changed dramatically over recent years affecting our Clubs and the Branch. We recognise that sponsorship sits firmly in the marketing budget and is assessed against other marketing channels. 8 As reported by our Director of Lifesaving, Geoff Raper, our 5,632 active patrolling members should be proud of their efforts throughout the season with our lifesaving patrols investing 155,125.5 hours keeping a vigilant watch over an estimated 3.09 million beachgoers throughout the season. We performed 1,319 rescues and 35,570 preventative actions and achieved our goal of no lives lost during our watch. As always, our support operations team of Duty Officers, Surfcom operators, Rescue Water Craft operators and the TIPS Team played their vital role in backing up and supporting the lifesavers on the beach. Our membership numbers peaked in the 2012/13 season at just under 20,000 and has plateaued slightly to 19,391. With the Northern Beaches population being around 267,000 our membership is around one in 14 of the population which is quiet impressive. We remain the largest Branch in the State with just over 25 per cent or a quarter of the SLSNSW membership. We continue to have strong interest and participation with our Junior Activities with more than 5,500 Nippers aged five to 13 learning and developing new life saving skills as well as fitness, increased self-confidence and self-esteem. Our Clubs successes were recognised at the end of last season with impressive wins at the 2014 SLSNSW Awards of Excellence where former Lifesaver of the Year, Andy Cross (South Narrabeen SLSC),was recognised for his outstanding service to surf life saving winning the Volunteer of the Year Award. Our Education and Assessment team have had another great year with a number of new initiatives to help build the skills and knowledge of our members. As our Director of Education and Assessment Adrienne Lowe has reported we saw a record number of Gold Medallions achieved in the last year the highest award in Surf Life Saving. We also conducted a number of Branch facilitated courses to assist Clubs who were unable to run their own courses. Overall, we processed 6,000 awards in the season with 711 new lifesavers trained with their Bronze Medallions. Thank you to all of our Trainers and Assessors for the great work you have done throughout the year and to all who have trained for new awards, well done on attaining these. Our community Education programs, run by the Surf Life Saving School, have continued to grow with around 16,000 school aged children participating in both beach-based and classroom-based surf safety, sun safety, and surf awareness programs. Our classroom visits are offered free of charge to schools throughout greater Sydney and provide a combined surf safety and sun safety message to primary aged school children with the aim of reducing drownings and cancer causing skin damage through Education. This program is funded by the Cancer Institute NSW and we thank them for their continued support. As our Director of Finance has reported, we managed a small profit this year, despite a reduction in sponsorship income, due to the diligence of our Directors and staff in managing their expenses. Some tough

decisions were made with the budget for 2015/16 and the search for new sponsors and grants continues. In the Surf Sports arena, our Sydney Northern Beaches Clubs excelled again at all levels. Our Director of Surf Sports Darren Warrener has noted these in his report. Congratulations to our athletes and Clubs on these great results and to our hard working Officials and Gear Steward Keith Abraham who make it all happen. Between seasons, our Branch Executive team and staff reviewed the recommendations of the Strategic Review Committee and the SLSA and SLSNSW strategic plans along with our previously developed SERVICES model. The majority of the 29 recommendations from the Strategic Review Committee have been or are in the process of being implemented. This included a review of our Constitution which was last updated in early 2006 and a restructure of our Surf Life Saving School bringing it back under the Branch structure versus a separate business structure that had existed previously. Our focus continues to be delivering services and adding value to our Clubs and assisting the membership. In May 2014, we a saw a change within our Executive team with David Murray stepping down and Doug Menzies elected as President. Shannon Job took on the Deputy President role and Adrienne Lowe was elected as Director of Education and Assessment vacated by Shannon. Michael Kirkby finished his term as Director of Surf Sports after making a number of significant improvements and Darren Warrener was elected to take on this role. It was pleasing to see at our recent Election AGM, Shannon Job, Geoff Raper and Tracey Hare-Boyd being re-elected unopposed. We say farewell to Rob Berry who held the role of Director of Sponsorship and Marketing for several terms and thank him for the great effort he put in securing new sponsorships and ensuring that our existing sponsors expectations were being exceeded. Rob s final report provides an update on all of our sponsorship activities throughout the year. As Rob has reported, we sadly saw the end of a 19-year partnership with Energy Australia/ Ausgrid in December. The support provided by them over this period has helped shape the Branch into what it is today and we are forever grateful. We are currently negotiating to find another Energy partner for the future. As Rob has also reported, we were fortunate to start a new partnership with Unilever with their Lipton Ice Tea brand. This compliments the existing partnership with Streets who have entered into a third three-year agreement with us. We thank Unilever for their valuable support and especially Martha Williams who has worked with us from the start to ensure that the partnership is delivering benefits to both parties. Thank you to all of our sponsors and supporters, new and old. The sponsorship arena has changed dramatically over recent years affecting our Clubs and the Branch. We recognise that sponsorship sits firmly in the marketing budget and is assessed against other marketing channels. It is vital for us to retain sponsors by providing them with a return on their investment. Please support our sponsors at every opportunity to ensure their ongoing funding. We recognise and value the contributions made by our National sponsors DHL, Telstra and Westpac through our peak body SLSA; the Federal Government who introduced the Beach Safety Equipment fund whereby every Club received $5,000 to be spent on lifesaving equipment; the NSW Government for capital and lifesaving equipment funding; Manly, Warringah and Pittwater Councils for their monetary and in-kind support at Club and Branch level; Surf Life Saving NSW and the Surf Life Saving Foundation for their fundraising activities that generate much-needed funds for our Clubs; Dee Why RSL Club and the Beach Club Collaroy who always support us through the Clubs Grant scheme; Westfield, The Manly Daily, URM, Northern Beaches Landrover and Jaguar, Thredbo, Dematic, BRP, and Bennett Boards who all contribute to support our efforts of saving lives. Thank you to our local political representatives Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Speaker of the House of Representatives Bronwyn Bishop, NSW Premier Mike Baird, NSW Minister for Planning Rob Stokes, and Minister for Family and Community Services and the Minister for Social Housing Brad Hazzard and our three Council Mayors Cr Jean Hay AM, Cr Michael Regan, and Cr Jacqueline Townsend for your continuing support of Surf Life Saving. Thank you for the support we receive from SLSNSW and SLSA and our fellow Branches especially Hunter and Central Coast for your willing assistance and sharing. Lastly, I want to thank our Branch Executive team led by Doug Menzies for their support, guidance and mentoring throughout the year. This Executive team is comprised of very talented people and I thank you all for your strategic vision and expertise in guiding the Branch. I also want to acknowledge and thank the great team of staff in the Branch Office who are all very dedicated to their roles. I appreciate the strong support you have shown me, the Branch Executive and our Clubs throughout the year. To Jen Huston, Marcial Nunura, Belinda Dobson, Kristen Raper and John Taylor - a big thank you for a job well done. Regrettably, Kristen left the Branch at the beginning of this year and we thank her for her significant contribution and wish her every success in the future. 9

DIRECTORS CHOICE AWARDS Harry Ragan Award This award was named in memory of Avalon Beach SLSC late Life Member Harry Ragan who originally funded the annual award for outstanding service by a Board of Examiner member. Harry was a Life Member of Avalon Beach, Manly Warringah Branch and NSW State Centre. He passed away in April, 1974 shortly before he was to be formally presented with his State Life Membership badge. Gary Beauchamp North Curl Curl SLSC Gary has been associated with Surf Life Saving since January, During this time he has consistently displayed long-term commitment to all facets of Surf Life Saving. Gary was a participant in the initial trial and subsequent implementation of the Silver Medallion Life Support award and was one of the first Facilitators of this award. Gary was involved in the co-ordination and activities of the initial pilot programs within SLSA on the implementation of the Semi-Automated Defibrillation Program into Surf Life Saving. Gary is particularly well known for his dedication to the Education and Assessment of the ARTC and Branch facilitated awards. Currently, Gary is the Branch Advanced Life Support Advisor, a role he has served since Prior to the start of each season, Gary researches, plans and develops updates for all Branch ARTC Assessors ensuring they remain current and compliant. He has ensured that the quality of assessments remains high, resulting in competent patrolling members on our beaches. Gary has participated in many Branch activities: A Life Member, long serving member of the Branch Trauma Incident Peer Support Team, scrutineer, surf sports official and participates in annual Gear Inspection. Previous Recipients: Shannon Job Andrew Cross Jonathan Farrell Louise Lindop Tracey Hare-Boyd Graham Howard Cedric T Walton Award for Competition Recording This award was established to remember Cedric T Walton who was a Life Member of the Branch and a long standing member of North Steyne Surf Life Saving Club. Cedric carried out recording duties over many years at Branch, State and Australian Championship carnivals. As we all know, without officials we would not be able to run carnivals. One role that is often overlooked is the role of the recorder. Without a recorder, we would have no results and no point score at the end of each carnival. It is a tedious job especially as competitors finish an event and try to say their name in between big deep breaths our recorders have to decipher what they have said and guess what club they are from because by now they have usually removed their cap from their head. Robyn Holt Queenscliff SLSC She not only does the recording under the tent at the smaller carnivals but more importantly manually enters everything into her computer at the end of the day and gives us a spreadsheet of results for the entire carnival this is what you see on the website after every carnival. Her commitment to surf sports competition is second to none and she is well deserving of this award. Previous Recipients: 08/09 Rhonda Lycett, Mona Vale 09/10 Clare Hagon, North Curl Curl 10/11 Robyn Holt, Queenscliff 18 11/12 Janine Fahey, Collaroy 12/13 Kay Lyall, Queenscliff 13/14 Megan Hayward Newport Raymond Matthew Brown Award This award is named after Raymond Matthew Brown OAM. Ray was known as the voice of the airwaves and also was respected as a trainer of all new operators in the radio room. Ray was also a Life Member at all levels of SLS from Club through to National. During major incidents it was Ray s calming voice that would help the lifesaver on the beach calm down and get all the necessary information needed by emergency services. He was also known for keeping all patrolling members up to date with cricket scores during summer. Lorelle Kinsey Warriewood She has been a radio operator at Surfcom for many years. Back in 2010 when SLS introduced the Surfcom Management System, Lorelle trained new operators in its use. She brings with her a lot of experience that she has gained not just with SLS over the years but also with the Rural Fire Service. During critical incidents, she competently manages the situation independently, thereby allowing the other radio operators to continue supporting other Clubs and Branches as necessary. Lorelle continues to provide ongoing training and support for operators and has consistently shown herself to be a great mentor for new operators joining the team. 20 LIFESAVING GEOFF RAPER DIRECTOR To all patrolling members who selflessly volunteered their valuable time to patrol and further their studies to gain additional and higher awards, a very sincere thank you for elevating the profile of Surf Life Saving and of the 21 Clubs on the northern beaches. Once again with the professional voluntary effort of all our lifesavers, I can report that no lives were lost between the flags during patrol hours. Congratulations and great effort from all patrolling members who gave up their time to help make our beaches safe for beachgoers. A special thanks to my Deputy Assistant Rohan Fisher for another great season. I would also like to thank my team who assisted me in the various portfolios that make up Rescue Services. Surfcom Adrian Hill Patrol Assessments Keith Abraham TIPS Trish Newton Power Craft Panel Graham Howard, Kieran Menzies Duty Officers Rohan Fisher And to all the members under the leadership of the above people, thank you for your ongoing dedication and support. To all patrolling members who selflessly volunteered their valuable time to patrol and further their studies to gain additional and higher awards, a very sincere thank you for elevating the profile of Surf Life Saving and of the 21 Clubs on the northern beaches. I thank the Club Captains who attended our meetings and had input towards the successful State Grant that benefitted all 21 Clubs, with the unanimous decision of all to unite and accept new radios. All Clubs received three new Hytera Digital radios. This allowed for all Clubs to equally share in the grant funding allocation. The implementation of the mandatory wearing of PFD s in IRB s was generally well received and most took it on board and adhered to the exemption being removed by the RMS. I would like to reflect on the amount of hours, first aids, preventative actions and rescues this past season. The total number of voluntary patrol hours carried out by our members of the 21 Clubs totalled 155,125.5 hours. We carried out a total of 1,319 rescues, we did 35, 570 preventative actions and assisted the public with 2,288 first aids. Congratulations to our Young Life Saver of the Year, Sita Mason (Manly LSC) and Adam Hockley (Dee Why SLSC) who were joint winners and the Life Saver of the Year, Adam Kent, from Long Reef. Best of luck with your State interviews. I will sum up thanking all of our members who patrol each and every weekend and public holidays from September through to the end of April. The Support Operations personnel who do far and above their normal patrol duties such as Radio Operations, TIPS, Duty Officer and RWC Operators, the Trainers who up skill our patrol members and the Assessors who keep them updated and proficient. Finally, thank you to the Branch staff Steve, Jen, Belinda, Kristen, Marcial and John and the team with whom I deal with at State Centre and my fellow Directors for their support and assistance. Look forward to seeing you all again on the beach next season. Geoff Raper Surfcom Report The season was a new change to Surfcom operations with both Belrose 20

and Warringah sites being the only two operational Surfcoms in the State. This means that with the assistance of SLSNSW, our Warringah site has full redundancy for the entire State Radio Network. Surfcom would not be possible without the great skills and passion from a dedicated team of volunteers. These members devote an enormous amount of hours to help cover shifts to provide coverage for the State and, in most cases, these hours are on top of other surf duties at Club, Branch and State level. To these volunteers I say thank you. Again Steve McInnes and the Branch staff have been great with administration support for the Warringah site and to Andy Kent and the lifesaving team for State rostering, training and administration of Belrose. And, lastly, to Geoff Raper and Rohan Fisher for their support and guidance throughout the season. We finally achieved the biggest win in my seven seasons as the Radio Supervisor with the signing of our long term Lease for the Warringah Rescue Surf Building. I would personally like to thank the team of people that made this possible. From Branch, Steve McInnes, David Murray, Doug Menzies, Tracey Lake and Matt Sheridan. Also Warringah Councillor Vincent De Luca and local State Parliament member Rob Stokes and NSW Premier Mike Baird. The Clubs are set up well with new radios being supplied via the SLSNSW grant getting ready for the digital changeover, hopefully this coming season. This will bring new technology to surf and enhance our ability to cover black spots, being able to track water and beach assets via GPS and improve voice communications clarity. Thank you all and talk to you next season. Adrian Hill 21

LIFESAVING The current panel of Terry Barber, Peter Finch, Geoff Hale, Kieran Menzies, Nigel Penn and Geoff Raper provided valuable advice, not only to the Clubs but individual operators, put forward several recommendations to ensure safety and enthusiasm and implemented many improvements to the operations of IRB s, ATV s and RWC s throughout the season. We also saw our RWC operators again work throughout the off season to improve their skills. Again SLSNSW commended our Support Operations RWC services for their efforts and professionalism throughout the season. Duty Officers Report Thanks to all the Duty Officers who volunteered their time to act as the Branch liaison for the patrolling season. The group had a mission to broaden the knowledge of the existing Duty Officers support group. On each shift, all Duty Officers visited five beaches and talked to all patrolling members and the general public. The feedback gained from our members was very positive, and I thank all members for their support. Our Duty Officers go above and beyond to keep our Branch safe. Not only do they patrol on their respective beaches, but most of our Duty Officers partake in Surfcom shifts and/or RWC shifts. I thank each and every one of our Duty Officers for the commitment they have given to the Branch during the past season and wish them and their families a safe winter period and look forward to seeing them ready and raring to go next season. Rohan Fisher Powercraft Report We ve had another great Powercraft season but it would not have been possible without the help of Branch Powercraft Adviser Graham Howard and the Powercraft Panel. This is a fine tribute to the hard efforts of all our RWC operators, who put in countless hours over and above their regular patrolling and training commitments. A huge thank you to Graham Howard and Richard Budd, who organise rosters, fuel, storage and maintenance for the skis in their various locations. We would also like to thank North Palm Beach, Newport and Freshwater for loaning their valuable space and other resources during the season to accommodate our RWC s, and making our operators feel welcome when they come to your beach. Without your assistance this service could not operate. Another special mention must go to North Palm Beach for their efforts all year round in accommodating all RWC training for the Branch. Over the winter, the Powercraft panel ran an IRB course for those Clubs who are struggling for Trainers. This course was developed to assist to train up members of Clubs to also run the course. With feedback from the Trainers and participants, the course is being improved and will be running again over winter. A big thank you to Bilgola for making available their Club and beach for the duration of the course. Also to Nigel Penn, Terry Barber and Peter Finch for organising, coordinating and training the course. Moving into the new season, we will be working towards the common goal of improving Powercraft operations throughout the Branch. The Powercraft panel has enjoyed the past few seasons and are hoping to help improve the operations into the future. Kieran Menzies 22

EDUCATION & ASSESSMENT ADRIENNE LOWE DIRECTOR The 2014/15 season heralded enormous changes to the Training and Assessment of industry based awards, particularly with the introduction of new units of competency within our core awards. Education within a nationally Recognised Training Organisation relies on a number of dedicated members, and Surf Lifesaving Sydney Northern Beaches has been fortunate to have an enthusiastic team of Training Officers, Assessors and Facilitators. They have shown compassion, strength and tenacity. To provide an invaluable educational service to surf lifesavers on the beach is a credit to all our members, supporters and loyal sponsors. The 2014/15 season heralded enormous changes to the Training and Assessment of industry based awards, particularly with the introduction of new units of competency within our core awards. On top of additional industry based standards, SLSA released the 34th Edition of the Public Safety and Aquatic Rescue Manual. All these changes and amendments meant every member involved in the Education of SRC, Bronze, Silver, Gold, First Aid and ARTC awards were required to upgrade their qualifications. During the pre-season, 12 updates and workshops were conducted to ensure Training Officers and Assessors were compliant under the new industry standards. Sincere thanks to Steve Haggett, Tracey Hare- Boyd, Steve Faddy, Fran Brenchley, Louise Lindop, Rod McGibbon, Glenn Everingham, Shannon Job, Lindsay Davis, Marianne Troop, Gary Beauchamp, Kaz Marks and the entire Menzies family, all of whom not only updated their own qualifications but volunteered to upgrade a total of 189 Training Officers, Assessors and Facilitators. Across the Branch, Clubs processed a total of 6,000 new awards from Surf Play One to the Gold Medallion. Clubs put through 711 new Bronze awards, 440 SRCs and 190 Powercraft awards. To give a snapshot on Assessor activities at a Club level, 4,241 patrolling members gained their Bronze proficiency. Training Officer, Assessor and Facilitator (TAF) Development In the 2014/15 season, SLSSNB ran three Training Officer Courses, with 24 new Trainers being endorsed. On the Assessor front, two courses were conducted and 14 members are now Probationary Assessors. Five members went on to complete their qualification under the guidance of a mentor and were endorsed by the Board. An additional 36 Assessors were given endorsement to assess Spinal Management proficiencies, meaning all but a handful of Clubs can now have the spinal proficiency signed off internally. Facilitator numbers continue to grow. In 2014/15, eight new Facilitators were added to the team. Members are encouraged to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). A total of four TAFs applied and were granted RPL. Surf Rescue Certificate This award was hugely affected by the changes to industry standards and the timing could not have been worse as the changes came through mid-season. SRC candidates were required to learn team resuscitation and the use of the defibrillator. In November, our Central Venue Guidelines had to be altered to reflect the new units and, in some cases, assessments were split to allow candidates extra training time. Fran Brenchley, the Branch SRC Adviser, did an amazing job working with Clubs and the BOEA to ensure a smooth transition throughout the process. Bronze Medallion The Branch team improved upon and developed a number of resources to assist Clubs and Club members with the Bronze assessment process: Central Venue guidelines were spilt into two separate documents- Bronze and SRC. A Mentor program was implemented for 27

EDUCATION & ASSESSMENT Gold Medallion Special mention to the Gold (or Golden) team of Andy Cross, Bryn Russell, Shannon Job and the Board of Youth and Member Development. This team is behind the scenes scheming, tracking and inspiring candidates striving to gain this prestigious award, our highest lifesaving award. Shannon Job, Bryn Russell and Andy Cross not only assessed the Gold award but achieved their own Gold proficiencies. The Gold season kicked off with an information session at South Curl Curl SLSC. Andy Cross secured a celebrity line up that included Brad Gaul, Pat Farmer and Guy Leech. This session had to be one of the most inspiring ever. The Gold season finished on the last day of patrol with a wet Antarctic like day. All the hard work paid off with a record number of new Gold awards and proficiencies over the season. new Assessors in Charge for our Central Venues assessments. Central Venues Guidelines have improved the booking procedures through Branch, limiting number of candidates at certain Clubs due to limited space to assess, which in turn ensured the correct number of Assessors were available. Over the course of the season there were 57 Bronze Central Venue assessments. The Bronze Adviser Steve Haggett (Dee Why SLSC) attending 23, followed closely by Gordy Cockburn (North Narrabeen SLSC) Central Venues continue to improve the overall standards of the candidates and allows the Assessors to maintain assessing to the same standards as per the Training Manual. Regular debriefing at the end of the assessments has allowed constant review and improvement. ARTC Gary Beauchamp, the Branch Advanced Resuscitation Adviser, lent his valuable knowledge and industry expertise to ensure ARTC Central Venue standards remained high. In pre-season, Gary spent time developing a format for the ARTC and HLT upgrades. Gary continues to lead the ARTC Central Venue assessments at the North Curl Curl SLSC. Two ARTC courses were conducted as Central Venues in a revised format. Thank you to Gary Fox, Queenscliff SLSC, and Louise Lindop, Avalon Beach SLSC, for their work with this project. Thank you to the North Curl Curl SLSC for hosting the CV ARTC assessments. Powercraft In winter 2014, Branch trialled a Central Venue training course for IRB Crew and IRB Drivers. In July 2015, Graham Howard and the Powercraft Panel revised this process and an off-season course will be conducted for IRBD and new IRB Training Officers. Clubs with low driver numbers and those without an IRB Training Officer are encouraged to participate. Jet Ski courses continued to run in the winter months. I would also like to thank North Palm Beach SLSC for all the assistance they provide in the training of our RWC operators. Facilitated Courses Thank you to Jess Menzies for co-ordinating the Branch facilitated courses. In 2014/15, Branch conducted the Training Officer and Assessor courses: Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management x 6; ARTC x 2; Spinal Management x 7; Pain Management x 1. SLSSNB Awards of Excellence Congratulations to Gary Beauchamp (North Curl Curl SLSC) on receiving the Harry Ragan Award for his years of service to Education and Lifesaving. Matt Molinia (Dee Why SLSC) received the Training Officer of the Year Award for his 28

innovations, including pathway programs for SRCs to Bronze, Orange Nipper Education programs, Nipper Parent Induction program, Gold pathways for Dee Why members and implementing a training patrol. Assessor of the Year, Ray Merton (North Curl Curl SLSC) for his work at Bronze and IRB Central Venue assessments and his community Education courses. As Club Vice-Captain, Ray strives to infuse his SLS Education knowledge directly into the veins of operational Patrol teams. He has instigated games involving competitive mock rescue scenarios across land and water which especially appeals to the sports competitors in patrols. Facilitator of the Year Clare Hagon (North Curl Curl SLSC). Clare works collaboratively with other Facilitators with support, mentoring and encouragement. She also keeps up to date with wider Educational developments by attending varied professional development activities, including Action Research relating to her work as a professional educator. This provides a fresh outlook to her ability to deliver relevant and engaging training in her SLS roles. Forward planning Central Venue guidelines for SRC and Bronze assessments have proved an invaluable resource not only for Assessors and Training Officers but also for the candidates. Planning is underway to develop CV guidelines for all Branch run assessments. A review is underway to focus on the current probationary Assessor/ Mentor structure with the development of clear pathways towards initial endorsement. Currently Spinal Management courses can only be conducted by facilitators. SLSNSW has given the Branch endorsement to trial courses instructed and assessed by Training Officers and Assessors, taking the pressure off our limited number of Facilitators. Restructuring the format of Branch facilitated courses with online material to minimise the number of hours spent on face to face training. The new season Education calendar was drafted and circulated in May. Next season Branch has scheduled 4 Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management courses, 4 Spinal Management courses, 1 Pain Management course, 1 Silver Medallion Search and Rescue course, 3 Training Officer Courses and 2 Assessor Courses. The 2015/16 season is a re-endorsement year for all TAFs. The Probationary Assessor (PA) initial endorsement process is somewhat adhoc with little or no clear pathways for PA s or Mentors to follow. This currently presents challenges particularly for Bronze PA s with the split dry/wet assessments and the number of assessment tasks. A project team to review the process and structure a pathway for PA s to follow will be put in place. Review on the delivery of ARTC, Basic Beach Management, Training Officer and Assessor courses. On-line modules, workplace modules included in course content. Thank you Our awards are all about the quality of Training and Assessment. Under the RTO framework, the Vocational Education Training sector annual audits are required at every tier of our organisation. The Branch received 100 per cent compliance so thank you to the Branch staff, in particular Belinda Dobson and the SLSSNB Executive. Congratulations to Narrabeen Beach SLSC for also gaining 100 per cent compliance. Personal thanks to the SLSNSW Education support staff Steve Allan, Louise Cooke and Judy Spicer and SLSA s Pamela Simon for their expertise and guidance. At the end of the day, it is great to put a large number of people through courses and get more new members but it is also important to retain those we train and work with them to enhance and improve their skill set and I believe Clubs and Branch are achieving this objective. Thank you to each and every person involved in Education across the 21 Clubs. Most of the hours our Training Officers, Assessors and Facilitators spend go largely unrewarded but the dedication and hard work have resulted in Clubs on Sydney s Northern Beaches becoming truly outstanding Surf Life Saving organisations. 29

MEMBER SERVICES TRACEY HARE-BOYD DIRECTOR We again assisted Education during the season and took on a tracking program for the Gold Medallion. Working and refining a developed system, Club members were able to lodge their interest in achieving the Gold Medallion. Youth and Membership Development had a great season and a lot of initiatives and projects were realised and accomplished. The hardest part of going on a journey is sometimes taking the first step and this past season, Youth and Membership Development worked integrally with other portfolios within Branch to ensure that our membership benefited from the initiatives that Youth and Membership took part in. Youth members were also recognised and well represented by their Junior Activity Chairs throughout the season. Hard Working Team Youth and Membership covers all sections of surf lifesaving and it was appropriate that the BYMD team was at the forefront of each section. This season, I was fortunate to keep my team of hard working individuals who worked together well because of their knowledge and expertise in their respective areas. I would like to start by thanking our Branch President, Doug Menzies along with my fellow Directors, Shannon Job, Geoff Raper, Adrienne Lowe, Lance Barnes, Darren Warrener and Rob Berry. Because Youth and Membership covers all portfolios, I have had the pleasure of dealing with all of the Branch staff. Steve McInnes, Jen Huston, Belinda Dobson, John Taylor and Marcial Nunura have all provided invaluable assistance and advice at the drop of a hat. Of special mention, I would like to thank Kristen Raper. Kristen was the Youth and Membership support staff at Branch and was always extremely helpful and assisted me with keeping our projects and initiatives on track and achievable. However, Kristen has now left the Branch and I wish her well in her future endeavours. Jen Huston, apart from her Branch management role, also took on the role of assisting BYMD. Her assistance and innovative ideas have been invaluable. I think it is important to note and remember that my fellow Directors and Branch staff are all members of Clubs themselves. The Directors and staff are all experiencing the everyday challenges that our Club members face first hand. My core panel also needs to be thanked and they consisted of Adrienne Lowe (Education), Steve Haggett (SRC), Andrew Cross (Lifesaving), Mike Stanley-Jones (Cadets and Rookie and Age Managers). These hardworking individuals helped to bring new ideas and also printed information and programs for the benefit of our Club Directors and Club Members. Gold Medallion We again assisted Education during the season and took on a tracking program for the Gold Medallion. Working and refining a developed system, Club members were able to lodge their interest in achieving the Gold Medallion. The tracking program showed award pathways which needed to be achieved and also listed training levels. Candidates had the opportunity to do training sessions in certain disciplines if they felt they needed extra training in the timed pool swim or board paddling. Club members were encouraged to train at venues with members from other Clubs which assisted them in achieving their training goals. Through Branch, our Director of Education also facilitated and arranged specific courses to enable candidates to obtain the pre-requisite awards, upgrade or become proficient prior to going to their assessment. Through the program, 10 new candidates achieved their Gold Medallion (12 last season) and 26 candidates achieved their proficiency (20 last season). This will be a program that will be run again within Member Services.

Surf Recreation Challenge (SRC) Day As the Under 14 members graduated from Nippers this past season, we ran a Surf Recreation Challenge day where members were invited to an afternoon of fun and challenges. A total of 60 Under 14 s attended to find out what the season ahead would hold for them. Attendees were able to ask questions about their SRC training and assessment process, what patrolling might be like, further awards and Junior Lifesaver of the Year. Candidates were given a motivational talk by fellow lifesaver, Katie Williams and big wave surfer Matt Grainger. Katie inspired the SRC s, talking about her career through Nippers to now with her Collaroy Club and her experiences as female Captain of the NSW team. Matt gave the SRC s an insight into what inspired him to start surfing big waves and leading into his surf school ownership and high performance school that is achieving great results for his students. March Past Parade In November, 72 Nippers, representing Clubs from Dee Why, Narrabeen Beach, North Curl Curl, North Steyne, Queenscliff and Warriewood, marched through Westfield Warringah Mall. Westfield is a Branch sponsor. As part of a Westfield Christmas promotion, our Clubs were asked to showcase their March Past teams. It was a colourful parade and the public commented on what a big impact the Nippers made. Thank you to those Clubs who participated. This was Warriewood s first march together as a team and should be congratulated for heading out together at such a big venue and in front of so many onlookers. Thanks also to Warren Hannam (Dee Why SLSC) who drove Santa in the ATV and got him safely to his destination. This was a great way to showcase Nippers doing what they enjoy at a place other than the beach. Junior Lifesaver of the Year The 2014/15 Junior Lifesaver of the Year program saw a very high calibre of nominations. The judges were hard pressed to choose the two winners who would then go onto represent SNB at the State JLOTY. Thanks to judges Lee Cooper, Katie Williams and Shannon Job. Our workshop gave the candidates an opportunity to present and showcase their individual programs. This year we had an SRC presenter at the workshop. This presenter achieved his SRC in March, 2014 and was able to give the candidates an insight into what sort of integration was needed moving forward from SRC into Cadets, patrolling and Club life outside of Nippers. The workshop also gave the candidates a chance to talk about, further expand on and share the programs they wanted to initiate into their Club. It was very positive to hear that some of the candidates had already introduced and implemented their ideas and programs into their respective Clubs by the time they attended the JLOTY interviews. This was truly a group of motivated and inspired SRCs. Each Club who provided a candidate this year was exceptionally well represented by these 13 year- old lifesavers. They should all be individually congratulated on their achievements within their Clubs. Winners were announced at a presentation evening held at the Branch headquarters. I would like to extend my thanks to the Club Presidents who attended the evening to witness the future of the lifesaving movement representing their Clubs with such 37

MEMBER SERVICES maturity. It was also nice to see the room filled with Juniors Activity Chairs, parents, friends and siblings. This is an important youth program to ensure we are nurturing and mentoring the youth of our Clubs leading them from Nippers into Cadetship and to ensure their longevity within our Clubs. I would like to thank Glen Borg, of Dematic, who were sponsors of this program again this year and continue to support the JLOTY program and the youth of our Branch. Congratulations to Cameron Gaw of Collaroy and Sam Le Geyt of South Curl Curl on being selected as the Branch Junior Lifesavers of the Year. This year our two winners attended mock interviews with previous State JLOTY finalists Sita Mason and Jake de Kort. Thanks to Sita and Jake for briefing our two candidates on what to expect at the State JLOTY camp. Both Cameron and Sam represented SNB extremely well at the State JLOTY camp and interviews. I was lucky enough to be a State JLOTY judge and, although I didn t get to see Cameron, I note that Sam came a very close second in his interviews. At 13, Sam must be congratulated and commended on his knowledge of his Club and all their members and also his maturity and confidence that he portrays in his knowledge of everything that is surf lifesaving. I m sure that both Sam and Cameron will continue to do their Club proud as they progress in their journey through surf lifesaving, not only at a Club but Branch and State level. 38 Thank You Get Together This season all sections of Education, Surf Sports, Lifesaving and Member Services got together and put on a Thank You function for members. Finding the time to schedule these types of events is always hard. We were lucky enough to squeeze it in at the end of the season before everyone settled into off-season mode. Thanks to Adrienne Lowe and Belinda Dobson for organising the event and thanks also to South Narrabeen SLSC for hosting the event. SLSNSW Programs There are numerous SLSNSW programs and SNB were well represented by candidates in all programs during the season. We hope that more members will join in and participate in these programs again next season as the members who participated found them very worthwhile. Youth Opportunity Makers This year SLSNSW had 45 applications and Sydney Northern Beaches had

three successful applicants who were Tahlia Dearden (Freshwater), Courtney Halford (Long Reef) and Danielle Edwards (North Steyne). Sita Mason was accepted into the Development Networking Program but because of a change to her University schedule that clashed with the program dates, Sita was unable to attend. 26+ Development Program This past season, SLSNSW trialled this program. Three applications from SNB were received and, unfortunately, as this was a trial program, only one candidate could attend. Charles Vinney (North Steyne) was the applicant who was successful in attending this program. SLSA National Leadership College Sydney Northern Beaches applicants to attend the SLSA National Leadership College were Charles Marriott (Palm Beach SLSC) and Simon Vincent (South Narrabeen SLSC). Congratulations to all those who represented Sydney Northern Beaches at these programs. Awards of Excellence The culmination of the season s efforts for all members involved from patrolling members, competitors, officials to volunteers doing barbeque and kiosk shifts. The evening takes an enormous amount of organisation and the Branch staff spends many hours tallying up point scores, organising and setting up everything but no one more than Jen Huston who personally oversees every detail of the evening. Thanks to the Branch staff for assisting but special thanks to Jen for the amount of hours spent on fine tuning all the details, including theme, invitations and decorations, a lot of which is done after hours. There is also a behind the scenes team of experts who help out and thanks to Kevin Green for the creative design, Vicki Huston for photography and Jacqui Huston for her craft ideas and implementation. Thanks also to our MC s for the evening, Sita Mason and Shannon Job. Congratulations to all winners and I wish them luck as they move onto the SLSNSW Awards of Excellence. The nominations received this season were all exceptional but I encourage all Clubs to put forward nominations next season for these Awards of Excellence to ensure that their members are recognised for their efforts and achievements over the season. Where To From Here? Member Services will be taking on some new projects and initiatives for members in the coming season and look forward to achieving more goals for the benefit of Clubs and their members throughout the Branch. We need to keep moving forward with this movement to ensure we don t get left behind. There will be changes coming into the movement next season and Member Services will ensure that they will be on the front foot assisting Presidents, Directors and Members with the implementation of new systems and protocols introduced by SLSA and SLSNSW whilst continuing to achieve strategic goals set within Branch for the benefit of their membership. We once again look forward to working closely with Education, Surf Sports and Lifesaving to ensure all aspects of membership are being looked after. Surf Life Saving is a volunteer organisation and one of a few volunteer organisations where members need to train and qualify to become a volunteer. Although it takes time to achieve our awards and then carry out proficiencies, our skills are not exclusive to the beach but life skills which is the important thing to remember. Encouragement and nurturing of our youth members will help to ensure the future of our organisation and also ensure the work that we are all doing now is carried on for years to come. As the Director of Member Services, I would like to thank every member of every Club within our Branch for their time spent volunteering on and off the beach this past season. 39

SPONSORSHIP & MARKETING ROB BERRY DIRECTOR The Streets Ice Cream division of Unilever has continued their financial support signing up for another three-year term. Streets provide the highly visible red and yellow patrol tents and provide our Clubs with freezers and stock to raise funds through their canteens and kiosks. For almost two decades, Sydney Northern Beaches Branch was indeed fortunate to have Energy Australia [now Ausgrid] as the major sponsor but all good things come to an end at some stage. We are ever so grateful for the funding provided over the years which enabled us to carry out the various services that we provide. It was a partnership that allowed our Branch to prosper and become the strongest in the State. Sadly, the long-term deal with the electricity company ended on December 31, The Streets Ice Cream division of Unilever has continued their financial support signing up for another three-year term. Streets provide the highly visible red and yellow patrol tents and provide our Clubs with freezers and stock to raise funds through their canteens and kiosks. Lipton Ice Tea, another Unilever division, has also come on board replacing Coca Cola, providing funding over a three-year period. Lipton Ice Tea is a market leader globally and our Clubs now provide this refreshing drink through their kiosks. We thank Martha Williams and the team at Streets and Lipton Ice Tea for their continuing support. Westfield Warringah Mall is a great supporter of Sydney Northern Beaches Surf Life Saving and has increased involvement over the past few seasons through the Junior Lifesaving Championships, providing hundreds of Officials shirts and other financial support. Introduced for the first time was a parade of teams from various Junior Clubs through Warringah Mall before Christmas with Santa leading the parade in an ATV. The participating Clubs received $500 each. On the day, Westfield Warringah Mall Regional Manager Scott Moore handed over a cheque for $16,500 to our Branch. And Westfield has plans for other fundraising events next season. We thank Westfield for their wonderful support and particularly, Scott Moore. The 2015 Junior Lifesaver of the Year Award was again sponsored by Dematic, the materials, handling and technology experts. Many thanks to CEO Glen Borg and Marketing Manager Carole McCormick. Our thanks to David Johnston, General Manager of URM Waste and Recycling Solutions, for funding the Lifesaver of the Year Award and also for financial help to several Clubs. URM also sponsored our Surf Sports awards at this year s Awards of Excellence. Other essential support came from the Bill Buckle Group Auto Dealerships at Brookvale. As well as sponsoring the Branch Open Championships with naming rights for Northern Beaches Jaguar/Landrover, Bill Buckle funds the transport of the Gear Container to carnival locations. Thredbo has long been a popular winter and summer destination for our members and Northern Beaches residents so Kosciuszko Thredbo financially support the Branch and also offer package deals to our members. Bennett Surfboards has been a sure choice of Clubs for many generations and, in return, generously support surf sports with the Bennett Ironman and Board Classic at Freshwater which attracts a big roll up from under 9s to 14s. 42

The Primary Schools classroom program of Surf Smart-Sun Smart, across the Sydney area, has reached more than 16,000 students, thanks to the generous support of the Cancer Institute NSW. Their funding has enabled us to provide free of charge classroom programs to promote surf safety and sun safety to a wider audience of school aged children. The Branch and some of our individual Clubs are most fortunate to have support from registered Clubs in our region. Dee Why RSL, in particular, has been most generous donating a rescue jetski for our support operations, as has The Beach Club Collaroy who donated two beach tents to help protect our Officials from the sun at carnivals. We thank the management and Directors of both Clubs for recognising and supporting our rescue efforts. Many thanks to Warringah and Pittwater Councils who are very aware of the important role our Life Saving Clubs play and provide financial assistance to the Branch with annual grants. Our thanks to local MP s, Rob Stokes, Brad Hazzard and Premier Mike Baird for their support. The time the Hon Bronwyn Bishop, Federal Member for Mackellar, gives up to attend Branch and Club events is very much appreciated. Our volunteer organisation is fortunate to have such strong support from our Government leaders. To our national sponsors, DHL, Telstra and Westpac, thank you for your ongoing support for the funding that is provided through SLSNSW to the Branch. The Branch appreciates the excellent newspaper coverage in the Manly Daily and special thanks to Editor Nick Calacouras, Sports Editor Jon Geddes and journalists Andrew Prentice and Bryn Kay. The Manly Daily also conducted a photo competition over 10 weeks called Swim between the Flags. Readers were invited to submit photos of beach activities. Westfield Warringah Mall donated Gift Vouchers that totalled $1,500. Further support from the Manly Daily was in presenting a series of Surf Safety messages as part of community education. Not forgetting Alison Guesdon s great work promoting Surf Life Saving on Pittwater Online News and to Pittwater Life for their excellent coverage. Thanks to Nigel Wall. This has been my last season as a volunteer Branch Director after six years in the role. It was a privilege to have been a small part of Sydney Northern Beaches Surf Life Saving. The staff of Steve McInnes, Jen Huston, Marcial Nunura, Belinda Dobson and John Taylor work tirelessly and are so dedicated. It is very special. I thank them for their help. I know how much time the Directors devote to their Branch duties. They go beyond the call and they deserve a special thanks, as do the 21 Club Presidents. On a parting note, a massive thank you to our sponsors of the Branch and Clubs who help facilitate the community service given by our volunteer lifesavers. And to our lifesavers. Keep up the great work in keeping our beaches safe. 43

SURF SPORTS DARREN WARRENER DIRECTOR Surf Sports on the northern beaches is in a fantastic position with Competitors, Officials, Club Coaches and Administrators. They are all positive and supportive of the direction surf sports has taken. In my first year in the role as Director of Surf Sports, I found it both challenging and rewarding. Surf Sports on the northern beaches is in a fantastic position with Competitors, Officials, Club Coaches and Administrators. They are all positive and supportive of the direction surf sports has taken. The BoSS is made up of 11 fantastic and dedicated Advisers who have a real passion for the sport and the direction going forward. Each Adviser has a panel and this is where I encourage members of Clubs with the same passion for the different sections to please make contact and join the panels next season. Advisers sitting on the BoSS this past season were: Lifesaving Steve Haggett (Dee Why) R&R Sue Troy (Freshwater) March Past Gary Cook (Newport) Beach Martin Lynch (Newport) and Michael Gedz (Queenscliff) Boats Alex Hill (Manly) Water and Craft - Peter Tullett (Newport) High Performance David Rees (Warriewood) Carnival Review Louis Tassone (North Curl Curl) Powercraft Nigel Penn (Bilgola) Officials Chris Dooley (North Steyne) In addition to these positions, we have Keith Abraham, who was invited to meetings representing the area of equipment. I would like to thank each of you and your panels for the dedication and support over the past 12 months as we continue to drive and improve surf sports within SNB. The aim of the BoSS is to deliver surf sports events that are safe, well organised and to continually look at ways of improving the experience for Competitors, Officials and spectators and we monitor this via the surveys we send out after each carnival. Major achievements in this area over the past year have been: Craft Carnivals these are short, fast carnivals where each competitor gets up to five races. Beach Carnival Queenscliff ran this as a trial and the response was fantastic, so look for more next season. 44 Host Clubs and Events Bilgola Boat Carnival Collaroy East Coast Masters Young Guns Dee Why Bennet Craft Carnival First Aid Carnival pm Patrol Competition event Freshwater Australia Day Open Carnival Bennett Junior Ironman Champion Lifesaver First Aid Carnival Boat Carnival Masters Carnival Twilight Craft Carnival Long Reef Boat Carnival Manly Manly Boat Carnival Manly Open Carnival Nipper Nats U9-U12 only Narrabeen Beach Junior Carnival Newport Boat Carnival Junior Carnival North Curl Curl Craft Carnival Open Carnival North Narrabeen First Aid Carnival Boat Carnival North Steyne Champion Lifesaver Palm Beach SNB Branch Championships Queenscliff Beach Carnival Boat Carnival Junior Carnival Open Carnival South Narrabeen Boat Carnival Warriewood Boat Carnival Masters Carnival The delivery of these events in SNB is a massive task due to the sheer number of competitors and the size of the Branch. We rely heavily on the 21 Clubs in the Branch to provide assistance and support and we would like to thank the Clubs and their organising committees and work parties for their efforts and contribution throughout the season. Season highlights We conducted 35 events, including our Branch championships and attracted 13,760 competitors and these were made up of 5,564 Nippers, 699 Masters, 2,992 boat, 167 lifeaving,150 boardriding and 4,188 open competitors. SNB Branch team competed at Catherine Hill Bay/Swansea Belmont in the NSW Inter Branch championships and regained the trophy after a tough battle with Sydney Branch. Congratulations to the team members and all those involved with the team. Kendrick Louis, Nathan Smith, Hannah Minogue and Hayden Allum competed in the

KNG iron series and well done to all. Kendrick Louis, Max Brooks and Georgia Miller have all qualified for next year s KNG series. Manly won the Junior point score at Branch, as did Newport with the Open point score. The NSW Championships were also won by Manly in the Juniors for the sixth year in a row and Newport for the second in a row in the Open carnival. Newport then followed this up with a second at the Australian titles and won the Handicap section. SNB was well represented at the Aussie titles with Newport, Manly and Collaroy featuring in the medals and also congratulations to all competitors who bought home a medal and to those who improved their performances on last season. Georgia Miller and Charlie Brooks were named female and male competitors of the carnival and this just followed up on the success they both had during the year. Our competitors and teams did the Branch and their Clubs proud with some outstanding results. Collaroy won both Under 23 male and female boat finals at the Aussies. South Curl Curl won the female open boat final and Mona Vale the reserve boat final. Newport won all three male Taplins the Opens, Under 19s and Under 17s. Naomi Flood, from Manly, won her sixth single ski title at the Aussies. What an amazing achievement. Georgia Miller was also recognised at the Sport NSW Awards by winning the youth sports person award of the year for her efforts last season with 10 medals at the World surf lifesaving championships in France and also six medals at the 2014 Australian titles. She followed it up this season with 19 medals at the NSW titles and eight medals at the Australian titles. The Masters also delivered some fantastic results at both the NSW and Australian titles so well done to everyone. A special mention to the Avalon Beach Antiques female Masters boat crew who won their fifth straight national title on top of the World Masters. This year the National Youth Championships were conducted on the Gold Coast and SNB Clubs were well represented so a big thank you to all those Clubs and competitors who took part. There were some great results from Manly girls Emily Doyle and Naomi Scott, who each won three Gold medals and Newport s Katie Edwards won the Under 15 female beach double. Surf sports is not all about winning but about developing those surf skills and being a part of a team and mateship. Within the Branch, we recognise these achievements at our Awards of Excellence and congratulations to the winners. 48 wave area, but a wave from behind would bring the rest of the pack up to our leaders and leave it to a sprint finish up the beach. SNB INTERBRANCH Whilst at dinner that evening, we received the news that SNB were in front on the point score by a handful of points from Sydney Branch. Our happy bunch of athletes were buoyed even further by the news and excited to continue their good work the following day. DAVID REES - SNB HIGH PERFORMANCE ADVISER 2014 What a terrific performance from our Sydney Northern Beaches Branch team to once again be crowned the NSW Interbranch champions. Our team looked strong with the inclusion of some bright new talent in the Under 12 s, along with some competitors in the open age group who had moved to SNB Clubs from other Branches. However, you never know how things pan out with the format at Interbranch and it quite often goes to the wire. The team arrived at their headquarters on Friday, December 12 and management sent some scouts down to check conditions at Catherine Hill Bay, as rumours suggested the surf was big. They were correct and there was much speculation whether the carnival would proceed at Catho or be relocated. When the teams arrived at Catherine Hill Bay on Saturday morning, the surf was still big. SLSNSW management decided to hold the sprint events first and make a decision on the water events at 10.30am. The sprint events went ahead with SNB making more than a good showing in most finals. It was then decided that the water events would be relocated to Swansea Belmont. Upon a quick relocation to Swansea, the water events got underway just after midday and the full program of events on the first day was complete just before 5pm with only one water area used. There was some great racing from all our SNB competitors on the first day. However, I did feel that luck just seemed to elude the SNB team more than aid our athletes. A number of times in the water area our SNB athletes would be leading coming into the Sunday morning arrived and again conditions at Catherine Hill Bay were deemed unsafe and we again relocated to Swansea. This time the beach specialists were also going to compete in their flag events at Swansea Belmont. The racing, as usual at these championships, was of an extremely high standard and all competitors had to work hard both on the beach and in the water to earn points for their Branch. There were many strong performances in the flags pit. It was mainly a team events day in the water and it was here it all came together for SNB and we started to take control with many wins. Later, we were delighted to hear that SNB had regained the Interbranch Championship Trophy by 18.5 points from Sydney Branch and Central Coast Branch. Congratulations to all our athletes. Not only did they compete fiercely, but they did it with spirit and enjoyment. They were extremely well behaved at our headquarters, dinner venues, on the beach and on the bus. They thoroughly deserved much praise.
