1 LIFESAVING It gives me great pleasure to report that with the combined efforts of our volunteer members of the 21 Clubs that make up the Sydney Northern Beaches Branch, once again no lives were lost between the flags during patrol hours over the past season. Lifesaving being our core business, from patrolling on the beach from September through to April, up-skilling and maintaining the proficiencies of your advanced awards, continues to be at the forefront of our Branch s Lifesaving activities. I sincerely thank the patrolling members of the 21 Clubs for their efforts over what was a long, hot summer, especially through the month of February. You made it happen each weekend. There were 45 coastal drownings statewide and five in our region, being the Sydney Northern Beaches. The number could quite easily have been higher if not for the number of successful resuscitations that were carried out by you, the volunteer lifesaver. We had an additional one million visitors to the NSW coast during the season, which made for more first aids, rescues and preventatives. I d like to give you a brief overview of what we achieved: 1,611 Rescues 43,730 Preventative actions 2,942 First Aids 136 Ambulances 2,663,728 Patrons visiting the beach Congratulations to all Rescue of the Month Branch winners. It is pleasing to see that all Clubs are recognising their members by taking the time to investigate, prepare and submit the reports. Special mention to the May-June 2015 Branch, State and National winners Avalon Beach and Warriewood SLSC S being a combined effort by members of both Clubs. Likewise for the February, 2016 Branch, State and National winners, once again being a combined effort of both Manly LSC and North Steyne SLSC. I thank the team that assists me over the various portfolios which make up Lifesaving Support Services. Deputy Rohan Fisher Surfcom Adrian Hill Patrol Assessments Keith Abraham TIPS Trish Newton Powercraft Adviser Graham Howard Duty Officers Rohan Fisher To the lifesavers under the leadership of the above-mentioned people who go over and above patrolling duties, thank you for your enthusiasm, dedication and support. Raymond Matthew Brown Award This award for season went to Stan Buckman, of Manly LSC. Stan clocked up many hours behind the computer and microphone and has a very calming influence on those he deals with when they are in a demanding situation. Stan is very unassuming, a true gentlemen and a deserved winner of the award. Congratulations Stan. This past season I was given the opportunity by SLSNSW to represent SNB at the World Conference on Drowning Prevention 2015, held in Penang, Malaysia. The conference ran ANNUAL REPORT from November 4 to 6. Representatives of 146 countries from around the globe attended the conference from third world countries such as in North Africa to developed countries from Europe, USA, England and Australia. At any one time, six conference rooms were needed when lectures were held. Such topics were: Coastal safety management Research methodologies National water safety plans Swimming and water safety Lifesaving services and surveillance Drowning preventions campaigns CPR, AED s First Aid RIP currents Coastal Risk analysis At Risk populations Community leaders presented the lectures, people with a passion for prevention of drowning, Cardio Specialists, Professors, ER Specialists and Doctors. Summary Drowning is a serious and neglected public health threat claiming the lives of 372,000 people a year worldwide. The belief is that this figure is probably higher due to underdeveloped countries not having the capacity to ascertain and log data and statistics. More than 90 per cent of these deaths occur in low and middle-income countries. The death toll is almost two-thirds that

2 of malnutrition and well over half that of malaria, but unlike these public health challenges, there are no broad prevention efforts that target drowning. Fortunately, we have the people that wear the red and yellow uniform the lifesaver. Patrol Assessments Auditors Keith Abraham, Barry Antella, Steve Haggett, Sharon Johnson and Gemma Margiotti. A total of five audits per Club were carried out this past season and generally the patrols welcomed the team. The audit revealed an overall improvement from all Clubs across the board. It should be noted that all five lifesavers carrying out the inspections all inspect in different ways and may look for different things but each individual is consistent with their style throughout the Branch. Duty Officers A huge thanks to our dedicated Duty Officers for the season Not only do our Duty Officers carry our roles within their respective Clubs, complete patrols, compete at carnivals and also represent other support services, but they dedicate their free time to ensure our 21 Clubs are safe throughout the season. We inducted three new Duty Officers and all three have a bright future. We also saw some long-standing Duty Officers not return as they felt they couldn t fulfil the extra obligation of serving our Branch. To those volunteers I thank you for your years of dedicated service to our group. Our After Hours Duty Officers were kept busy with a high quantity of calls from the 13SURF system and huge thanks to all our Clubs Emergency Response Teams for their support in our after hours incidents - Rohan Fisher. Surfcom The season saw the start of the new technology roll out with the Coastal Radio Network with Surf Life Saving NSW. All 21 Clubs and Branch support operations now have the new DMR digital radios thanks to the State grants. With this new technology we will be able to have clear and audible radio communications, as well as functionality such as GPS tracking of all surf assets, messaging derived from Surfcom, caller ID and roaming so the radios will pick up the strongest repeater signal. During the next season we will see the roll out of the final stage of the upgrade with Barrenjoey repeater being upgraded to digital Bilgola being relocated to a higher and better location A new repeater being installed at North Head to help with the southern Clubs I thank Geoff Raper and Rohan Fisher for their support during the season, as well as Steve McInnes and the Branch staff. Also to the 21 Clubs and their members for embracing the new changes with the radio network and technology. I look forward to working with everyone again next season - Adrian Hill. TIPS To the TIPS team, led and managed by Trish Newton. I know that you had a busy season. You are the quiet achievers and a lot of your time and effort goes unnoticed by the greater lifesaving community. I know that a lot of people that you work with find your services and assistance invaluable. Thank you to each and everyone of you. Powercraft A special thanks to Graham Howard and North Palm Beach Surf Club for again hosting the off season training of our new Support Operations RWC drivers. The training can take up to three months and is overseen by several dedicated lifesavers, Peter Finch, Kieran Menzies, Wal Dobrow and Warren Howard. Our RWC Support Operators train and hone their skills during the off season and do a minimum of six hours both with a buddy and surf skill on their own. Thank you to those operators who patrol out of North Palm Beach, Newport and Freshwater. These operators patrol over and above their normal rostered beach/club patrol duties. Great effort guys and girls. SURF LIFE SAVING SYDNEY NORTHERN BEACHES 21

3 LIFESAVING Thank you also to the three Clubs that house the RWC s and assist the operators with their ATV s in both launching and retrieval. Branch Winners Junior Lifesaver and Branch Lifesaver of the Year The calibre of applicants this year was extremely high and it was a difficult task to select a winner. Congratulations and good luck at the State interviews Branch Junior Lifesavers of the Year Joint winners Kyra Jenkins North Steyne Charles Kellaway Whale Beach Branch Lifesaver of the Year Adrienne, Darren, Lance, Shannon and our leader Doug. In conclusion, congratulations and thank you. It was a huge effort this past season by each and everyone of you, the Club Captains, Patrol Captains the IRB Drivers and Crew, the ART Operators, First Aid officers and Bronze members, to name but a few. I look forward to sharing with you another successful season and hope you will return fresh and rejuvenated and ready to do it all again come September. See you on the beach. 7 EDUCATION & ASSESSMENT Surf Life Saving Sydney Northern Beaches has 238 Training Officers, Assessors and Facilitators (TAFs). This past season 8,111 Education awards were processed. This includes Nippers, Cadets and Active Members Club awards. Relating to our core business, Clubs gained 763 new Bronze Medallion patrolling members, 200 new Silver Medallion holders and 18 new Gold Medallion active lifesavers. However, it s not always about the quantity of awards when the key is to provide quality Training programs and Assessments across the Branch. This objective has been met due in a large part to the professionalism and dedication of the Club Education teams. Demands on members involved in Education are high with most dedicating countless volunteer hours Training, Assessing and Facilitating, working behind the scenes updating their own qualifications by attending award upgrades, workshops, meetings and professional development sessions. Amazingly, these hours are not counted as patrol or service hours. It is mostly for the satisfaction of contributing to Surf Life Saving and the community and to ensure our patrolling members are up to date and trained to the highest standards in a multitude of awards. The skills our patrolling members have gained are only for use on patrol but are life skills for use on and off the beach and at any time of the day or night. It s satisfying to know many members have put these skills to the test in the form of rescues and assistance during critical incidents both within and outside Surf Life Saving. Who says there is an off season? Pre-season planning was paramount as was a re-endorsement year for most of our Trainers, Assessors and Facilitators. Thank you to those members who assisted with workshops and professional development sessions. Education within Surf Life Saving is not limited to training but also ensuring that members remain proficient and up to date in their awards. There were some key changes last season and, of particular, was the allocation of nominated members to act as delegates to assist in the assessing proficiencies with the exception being IRB Driver and RWC drivers. In many ways this shift eased the workload on Assessors, allowing Training Officers and other qualified members to conduct proficiencies. Overall, 16,107 proficiencies were processed last season, happily the majority before the December 31 deadline. On the compliance and sustainability side, every Club completed the Educheck document within our prescribed time. Results from this document will assist Branch and Clubs plan for the future. Whilst on compliance, congratulations to SLSNSW who received renewal of their RTO status for another seven years, an amazing feat in an industry fraught with uncertainty. Over the course of the season we conducted 64 Central Venue (CV) Bronze and SRC Assessments with a record 24 CV Assessments run during December, thus requiring 156 Assessors ANNUAL REPORT

8 Our Facilitators delivered five Spinal Management courses, nine Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management courses, two Pain Management courses, three Training Officer courses and two Assessor courses. I encourage all members to continue upgrading and developing their skills by attending any number of the quality Training programs on offer at your Club and Branch. Training Officer, Assessor and Facilitator (TAF) Development As previously mentioned, was a re-endorsement season for most TAFs. To assist with the re-endorsement requirements, Branch worked closely with the Academy to develop and deliver a series of pre-season workshops and Webinars. Thank you to Louise Cooke, SLSNSW Academy Manager, and Steve Allan, SLSNSW Academy Support Officer for their ongoing assistance. Both have kept the Branch posted on Educational updates, including Recognition of Prior Learning applications and ensuring Clubs and Branch met RTO requirements. Professional development sessions were incorporated into selected Board of Education meetings. Thank you to Lindsay Davis and Sharon Johnson for facilitating the Spinal Injury Supports Professional Development session which focused on spinal carries as shown in the 34th edition PSAR manual. Clarification was made on what is assessable. Sharon went on to discuss topics covering Mechanism of injury, Spinal case studies. The reality, Spinal log rolls, and what happens when help arrives. Fifty members packed into the Branch Headquarters to attend the session. Plans are underway to deliver further sessions next season. Across the Branch, 11 new Club Chief Training Officers joined Club Committees and our Education team. A new CTO information kit was developed, including guidelines, booking processes and handy tips for Surfguard data entry. Watch out for future onlne material, mentor programs and information sessions designed specifically for incoming CTOs. Particular emphasis was placed on assisting new Assessors. The Probationary Assessor endorsement process was somewhat ad hoc with little or no clear pathways to follow, particularly with the split dry/ wet Assessments and the number of Assessment tasks. The Probationary Assessor endorsement pathway was streamlined with three key modifications: Setting a clear pathway for Probationary Assessors to follow for final endorsement by the BOE A log book for candidates and mentors to track progress Assessor s in Charge upgraded their qualifications to become Mentors, allowing Probationary Assessors to be credited with a record of assessment at each assessment attended Thank you to Mike Le Geyt,of South Curl Curl SLSC, and Belinda Dobson who worked behind the scenes assisting with the development of key documents and advice. Next season, the focus is on developing similar resources for Clubs to use towards Training Officer endorsement. Late in the season, Branch released the SNB Education Guidelines for all CTOs and TAFs to utilise. The document is designed to bridge the gap between the SLSNSW Education SOPs and various internal documents to do with Central Venue guidelines etc. The document outlines where to find information and short explanations on various topics relating to Education. This is a particularly valuable resource, especially as part of a handover document for new CTOs. Surf Rescue Certificate Surf Rescue Certificate is the graduation of our U14 members from Nippers and into cadetship and patrolling our beaches. This past season 444 SRC certificates were gained throughout the Branch. This is a great number of awards achieved by the youth of our membership and we encourage them to continue by achieving their Bronze and further upskilling throughout their surf lifesaving career. There were no significant changes to the SRC course content and delivery, allowing for the refinement of the existing Branch Assessment material. Congratulations to all members who gained this valuable Surf Lifesaving award and thank you to Fran Brenchley for her assistance with this portfolio over the past two seasons. Bronze Medallion Across the Branch, we had a small increase in new Bronze award holders. However, there were big increases in candidate numbers from some of the smaller Clubs, including Bungan Beach SLSC (who more than doubled SURF LIFE SAVING SYDNEY NORTHERN BEACHES 27

9 EDUCATION & ASSESSMENT training. Thanks to North Palm Beach SLSC for hosting the course. IRB Crew numbers continue to rise with an 80 per cent increase over New IRB Driver increased slightly, and the number of driver proficiencies across the Branch remained constant. Facilitated Courses the number of candidates from previous seasons), Bilgola SLSC, and Whale Beach SLSC who gained 33 new Bronze awards - 17 more than the previous season. Whilst on statistics, a big thank you to Frank Traugott, Tracey Hare-Boyd, Lindsay Davis and Gordy Coburn who between them attended 73 Central Venue Bronze and SRC Assessments. The Central Venue Assessments continue to improve and are going a long way to ensure consistency in Training and Assessment. There are always areas to improve upon and I thank those who have taken time to assist with ideas and suggestions. We are planning to reduce the paperwork with ipads at CV Assessments and utilising on-line technology. I must thank Steve Haggett for his assistance as the Branch Bronze Medallion Adviser (and Lifesaving competition adviser), who has done an incredible job managing not only the Bronze but coaxing Assessors to officiate in Champion Lifesaver, Patrol Competition and First Aid events. Gold Medallion Led by the enthusiastic Andy Cross, a record number of members attended Gold Medallion Proficiencies and Assessments. The Gold season kicked off with an Information Session, Anything is Possible held at North Narrabeen SLSC. Thank you to Andy for securing guest speaker Liam Knight who delivered an inspirational and encouraging presentation. Congratulations to Whale Beach SLSC on the induction of their Golden Whale program resulting in eight new Gold members, the highest number from one Club in one Assessment. Powercraft Graham Howard and the Powercraft Panel had their work cut out with the introduction of a new 8th Edition of the SLSA Powercraft Training Manual and release of online resources in August. The panel helped with a number of pre-season award updates and advice during the season. RWC Training continued in the off season with 10 members This portfolio made significant internal changes to the Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management course and the Training Officer Certificate. Consideration was put into developing flexible delivery options, pre-course components and increasing candidate competition rates. The Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management course was condensed to a single day session, the content was revised with additional elements to make the course relevant to our beaches. The completion rate for the Training Officer course improved with the addition of a what to do now information sheet for candidates. Each candidate was followed up by the Facilitator and Branch to ensure candidates complete the on-the-job components and submit their portfolios. Eighteen Clubs had candidates attend a Training Officer course this past season. Thank you to all Branch Facilitators who ran courses and personal thanks to Jess Menzies, our SNB Facilitator Course Coordinator, for her help and assistance throughout the season. Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate ANNUAL REPORT This award has undergone numerous updates over the past few seasons with the nationally recognised units of competency changes impacting on the knowledge and skills base. Thank you to Gary Beauchamp for advising the Education department on updates and his work over the years with the ARTC Central Venue Assessments and workshops. The season experienced a significant drop in ARTC numbers and many Clubs elected to send members to the SLSNSW single day commercial course so emphasis was put into trialling flexible delivery options, including pre-course workbooks, revised lesson plans and offering single day courses and Club or Central Venue Assessments.

10 SLS SNB Awards of Excellence Training Officer of the Year - David Spink, Dee Why SLSC While undertaking Assessments Lindsay remains vigilant in looking for ways to improve and streamline the Assessment process to benefit both Assessors and participants. This is consistent with her approach with the wide range of other activities she has been engaged in over the years at Club and higher levels. Facilitator of the Year - Clare Hagon, North Curl Curl SLSC Technology- Branch has created an online Education calendar, showing each Central Venue Assessment as an event listing venue and start times, the number of candidates booked and the names of the Assessors booked in. Early feedback has been positive and we are looking to extend it to include all Education events. Probationary Training Officer endorsement pathway program similar to the Assessor endorsement pathway for Clubs to use. Courses on scope: A committed Trainer, Dave has broadened his portfolio from IRB training to include Bronze training as he believes in the importance of working with candidates from the start. Dave has created an IRB training video as an introduction to each module of the course. This training tool assists new Trainers with the formulation of sessions to ensure everything is covered, especially safety protocols. Dave has also introduced new training resources into the training department in order to create a diverse methodology of training that will reach all candidates. Assessor of the Year - Lindsay Davis, Freshwater SLSC During the season , Clare has continued to deliver high quality Training and Assessment of facilitated courses in the award of Training Officer. She has facilitated the delivery of all three Training Officer Certificate courses run in the Branch in the past season. She also works extensively with other Trainers/Facilitators, supporting, mentoring and encouraging them where ever possible. Mentoring in the season has been focused on newly appointed Chief Training Officer and Training Officers at Club level, enabling a smoother changeover of roles. Forward Planning Cert IV course for a select group of Assessors who already hold five of the current TAE Training and Assessment units of competency. Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue (SMAR) course early in the season. The endorsement of new Facilitators to run the SMAR course. Depending on demand several courses to be scheduled over the season. Thank you Recognition must be given to the Branch staff and, in particular, Belinda Dobson for her ongoing guidance and support. Belinda is a wealth of knowledge in Education, Lifesaving and the Surfguard data system. Without Belinda s support I would not have achieved many of the advances in this portfolio. I would also like to thank the Executive for their ongoing support over the past few seasons. All in all, Surf Lifesaving Education on the Northern Beaches is in a great position to move forward with a fantastic team of Content Experts, Trainers, Assessors, Facilitators, Chief Training Officers and the Board of Education advisory team. On any objective analysis Lindsay was outstanding in her contribution to Assessment based duties during the past season. She is an Assessor for ARTC, and Assessor in Charge at the Bronze Medallion and SRC Assessments. Lindsay has contributed to the on-going Education of other Assessors in the Branch by conducting skills update sessions and mentoring Probationary Assessors. Some of the projects underway. Pre-season award updates and workshops: The Australian Resuscitation Guidelines (Jan 2016) will have an impact on SLSA Awards for season so another big start to the new season. A refresher update for Mentors focusing on the latest resources and online material. SLSA Members portal has a Branch folder available and we will be utilising it moving forward. The Education folder will be restricted to endorsed TAFs and will contain documents such as contact details of Assessors. Unrestricted documents will be available in an Educational Document folder within the Branch folder that is visible to all Branch members. It is outstanding how many volunteers help on the Educational side of our organisation and I would like to thank everyone involved. 17 MEMBER SERVICES Member Services had another great season and a lot of initiatives and projects were realised and accomplished. And we are leaving no stone unturned to make it even better in the season. A lot of work on membership statistics was done during the past season. Clubs were interested in tracking their membership trends over past seasons. The table below shows membership trends throughout the Branch to the end of the third quarter Member Services covers all sections of Surf Life Saving and it was appropriate that the team are at the forefront of each section. I was fortunate to keep my team of hard working individuals who worked together well because of their knowledge and expertise in their respective areas. I would like to thank our Branch President, Doug Menzies along with my fellow Directors, Shannon Job, Geoff Raper, Adrienne Lowe, Lance Barnes and Darren Warrener. Because Member Services is an overall scope, I have had the pleasure of dealing with Branch staff. Steve McInnes, Jen Huston, Belinda Dobson, Marcial Nunura and Nick Hatch. All provided invaluable assistance and advice at the drop of a hat. Of special mention, I would like to thank Jen Huston. Jen took on the additional role of Member Services along with her managerial role at the Branch office. Jen kept my projects and initiatives on track and her innovative ideas are invaluable. I think it is important to note and remember that my fellow Directors and Branch staff are all members of Clubs themselves. The Directors and staff all experience the everyday challenges that our Club members face first hand. My core panel also needs to be thanked and they consisted of Adrienne Lowe (Education), Steve Haggett (SRC), Mike Stanley-Jones (Cadets and Rookie and Age Managers). This group of hardworking individuals helped to bring new ideas, printed information and programs to the Branch for the benefit of our Club Directors and Club Members. Club Sustainability Program Working with SLSNSW, each Club within SNB was given a Club Sustainability ANNUAL REPORT

18 marched through Westfield Warringah Mall leading Santa s entrance, which marked the start of the festive season. Westfield Warringah Mall is a sponsor of SNB and Clubs were again invited to showcase their colourful Nippers in the march past parade. Thank you to those Clubs who participated in this event. Participating Nippers should be congratulated for heading out at such a big venue and in front of so many onlookers. they could expect during their interviews. It is always a great help to be guided by your peers when doing something new. The workshop also gives the candidates a chance to meet and spend some time with their peers from neighbouring Clubs. It starts out very quiet in the room and, by lunch time, it seems like everyone has known each other for five years. The candidates are always willing to share knowledge and past experiences. Report listing relevant information about Membership, Education, Surf Sports and Lifesaving requirements. The report listed areas where Clubs need to focus on to comply with requirements and assists in forwarding planning for Clubs sustainability. This program also leads into the Quality Club Program once compliance through sustainability is reached. Santa Parade In November, Nippers from Dee Why, North Curl Curl, Collaroy, Manly and North Steyne This year it was great to see Nippers from U6 and U7 s joining in the event. Junior Lifesaver of the Year The Junior Lifesaver of the Year program in was again boosted by a very high calibre of nominations. The judges were hard pressed to choose the two winners who would then go on to represent SNB at the State JLOTY. Thanks to judges, Lee Cooper, Trae Hare-Boyd and Gemma Margiotta. Our workshop gave the candidates an opportunity to present and showcase their individual programs. We had last season s male winner, Sam LeGeyt, assisting with the workshop. Sam gave the candidates an insight into the State JLOTY camp and what It was very positive to hear that some of the candidates had already introduced and implemented their ideas and programs into the Club by the time they attended their JLOTY interview. This was truly a group of motivated and inspired SRCs. Each Club who provided a candidate was exceptionally well represented by these 13-year-old lifesavers as they showed their leadership potential at such a young age. They should all be individually congratulated on their achievements within their Clubs. Winners were announced at a presentation evening held at Branch headquarters. I extend my thanks to the Club Presidents who attended the evening to witness the future of the lifesaving movement representing their Clubs with such maturity. 19 MEMBER SERVICES It was also nice to see the room filled with Juniors Activity Chairs, parents, friends and siblings. This is an important youth program to ensure we are nurturing and mentoring the youth of our Clubs leading them from Nippers into Cadetship and to ensure their longevity within our Clubs. I thank Glenn Borg, of Dematic, who sponsor the program and continue to support the youth of our Branch. Congratulations to Gracie Kiely, of Freshwater SLSC, and Zizo Ayoub, of Dee Why SLSC, on being selected Branch Junior Lifesavers of the Year, with Ella Cook, Narrabeen Beach SLSC receiving a High Commendation. Unfortunately, due to family commitments, Gracie was unable to fulfil the role of the Branch JLOTY and Ella Cook was able to attend the SLSNSW JLOTY camp along with Zizo representing SNB. Both Ella and Zizo represented SNB extremely well at the State JLOTY camp and interviews. I was lucky enough to be a State JLOTY judge. Zizo was a very close second in his interview. On the last day of the camp, when the winners were announced, Ella Cook, Narrabeen Beach SLSC, was named the Female Junior Lifesaver of the Year. Congratulations Ella on winning this prestigious award. Both Ella and Zizo should be congratulated on the confidence and maturity shown during the camp and during their interviews. I am sure that both Ella and Zizo will continue to do their Clubs proud as they progress in their journey through surf lifesaving, not only at a Club but Branch and State level. Thank You Get Together Friday 13 may be unlucky for some but it was the night we held our Thank You evening. In appreciation of time volunteered, members from Surf Sports, Education, Lifesaving, Support Services and Member Services were invited to attend our Thank You function. The Directors Choice Awards were awarded to Stan Buckman, Manly LSC (Ray Mathew Brown Radio Operators Award)), Glenn Tolan, Mona Vale SLSC, (Harry Ragan Award) and ANNUAL REPORT

20 Rhonda Lycett, Mona Vale SLSC (Cedric T Walton Award for Competition Recording). Thanks to Jen Huston and Marcial Nunura for organising the event and to The Beach Club Collaroy for hosting the event. SLSNSW Programs There are numerous SLSNSW programs and SNB were well represented by candidates in all programs during the season. We hope that more members will join in and participate in these programs again next season as the members who participated found them very worthwhile. Youth Opportunity Makers SNB nominated nine candidates for the program. We had three successful applicants attending YOMs being Andrea Malm, Freshwater SLSC, Liam Bailey, Mona Vale SLSC and Tahlia Dearden, Freshwater SLSC.` Development Networking Program SLSC and Richard Rogers Jnr, Bilgola SLSC all attending the program. Congratulations to all those who represented Sydney Northern Beaches at these programs. Awards of Excellence The culmination of a season s efforts for all members involved from patrolling members, competitors, officials to volunteers doing barbeque and kiosk shifts. The evening takes an enormous amount of organisation with the Branch staff spending countless hours tallying up point scores, organising and setting up everything. No-one devotes more time than Jen Huston who takes the event on and personally oversees every detail of the evening. Thanks to the Branch staff for assisting but especially to Jen for the amount of hours spent on fine tuning all the details including theme, invitations and decorations - a lot of which is done after hours and off site. Where To From Here? Member Services will continue to work closely with Education, Lifesaving, Surf Sports and Support Services to ensure all aspects of membership are being looked after for the benefit of the Branch membership. Encouragement will be given to members to participate in programs conducted by the Branch, SLSNSW and SLSA. New projects and initiatives will be undertaken throughout the coming season and I look forward to achieving more goals for the benefit of Clubs and their members throughout the Branch. Member Services has been and will continue to be on the front foot assisting Presidents, Directors and Members with the implementation of new systems and protocols introduced by SLSA and SLSNSW whilst continuing to achieve strategic goals set within Branch for the benefit of its membership. Surf Life Saving is a volunteer organisation and one of a few volunteer organisations where members need to train and qualify to become an active volunteer. Encouragement and nurturing of our youth members will help to ensure the future of our organisation and also ensure the work that we are all doing now is carried on for years to come. As the Director of Member Services, I would like to thank every member of every Club within our Branch for their time spent volunteering on and off the beach this past season. SNB had three applicants accepted into this program, Sita Mason, Manly LSC, Melissa Hall, Avalon Beach SLSC and Jacqueline Green, Manly LSC. 26+ Development Program SNB were represented by Holly Ross, Freshwater SLSC and Geraldine Clarke, Manly LSC for this continuing program. SLSA National Leadership College SNB had exceptional representation for the National Leadership College with John Lewin, Whale Beach SLSC, David Vinson, North Curl Curl SLSC, Alastair Shields, Palm Beach There is also a behind the scenes team of experts who help out and thanks to Kevin Green for the creative design, Vicki Huston for photography and Jacqui Huston for her craft ideas and implementation. Thanks also to our MC s for the evening, Sita Mason and Shannon Job. Congratulations to all winners of awards for and I wish them all luck as they advance onto the SLSNSW Awards of Excellence. The nominations received were exceptional but I encourage all Clubs to put forward nominations next season for these Awards of Excellence to ensure that their members are recognised for their efforts and achievements over the season. 23 THE SURF LIFE SAVING SCHOOL Once again, the Surf Life Saving School (SLSS) improved upon its position from the previous season with an increased number of students and schools reached. Not only did the SLSS retain its customer base but expanded it with several new schools taking part in our program for the first time. The programs offered by the SLSS range from classroom visits to the Bronze Medallion for high school students, each program tailored to the needs of the participating school or community group. The Surf Awareness is by far our most popular program, taking up the majority of Term 4. School groups range in age but predominantly in years 3 to 6 have a day at the beach where they learn about surf safety whilst taking part in a number of beach and water activities. Students have a lot of fun, teachers get a day on the beach, a number of outcomes from the school syllabus are met and everyone is happy. In order to navigate through such a large number of schools, we need a lot of staff. We employed 76 people, all of who are current, proficient lifesavers from one of our 21 Surf Clubs. One of the many pleasures of operating the school is having the ability to employ so many SNB members. Members from all walks of life, from university students and senior high school students on holidays to our most experienced Trainers and Assessors. Without these qualified people the school would not be in the position it is now. Surf Awareness programs are only one part of the business. We also run very successful camps throughout the season; the Surf Sports Intensive Camp (SIC) and the Holiday Fun Camp. The Surf Sports Intensive camps are the most popular with Nippers having two days on the beach where they can develop new competition skills and train with the best coaches and senior competitors on the northern beaches. Last season we had 96 kids take part over two camps held in the October and December school holidays. The Holiday Fun Camp is more aimed towards kids having fun on the beach and we held one camp at the start of the year for 32 children. Thanks to the support of a new sponsor the RFi Group, we were able to continue our free program for special needs groups. We offer beach and pool programs to kids with special needs and we carry these out over the 12 months of the year. We are pleased to report that the RFi Group will continue to sponsor the program for a further two years. We were fortunate to again secure support from the Cancer Institute NSW which enabled us to visit schools in the greater Sydney region and promote a combined surf safety and sun safety/cancer prevention message at no cost to the participating schools. We reached 7000 students through this classroom program in Term 3 and very early in Term 4. We are hoping to reach even more students in the years to come ANNUAL REPORT For the tenth year running we were able to again provide a full year service to Stewart House. Beach programs and talks are held at their South Curl Curl premises on a weekly basis. This was made possible by a grant from the Westpac Foundation.

24 The school continues to grow and in turn is contributing more to the Branch every year, not only financially but also in a supporting role. The school helps Clubs with training when required and also runs Bronze and SRC courses over school holidays for those members who are unable to make the weekly sessions with their Clubs. Many thanks to the entire Surf Life Saving School staff for their commitment and energy the feedback from our programs is always positive and reflects the effort our staff put into running the courses. Welcome and a huge thank you to our new Surf School Coordinator Nick Hatch who has filled in some big shoes. Nick was responsible for the operational side of school and was faced with many challenges throughout the busy period of term four. Nick was able to deliver high quality programs throughout the year and has developed a great rapport with both clients and our school staff. Thanks to Jen Huston for the administrative support she provides the school staff and the mentoring role she played with Nick coming into the operations role. No job is too big or small for Jen and without her we would be lost. Also a big thank you to Board members Doug Menzies, Shannon Job, Lance Barnes and Adrienne Lowe for your involvement with this very successful project. The Surf Life Saving School continues to grow each year because of everyone involved. We envisage that the school will continue to grow and in turn continue to support the Branch financially all whilst spreading the surf safety message to school aged children in the greater Sydney area.
