Jason Tydeman and Glenn Jones are now Accredited Bronze Assessors. Not forgetting our members that have gained Silver Medallions in Basic Beach Management and Spinal Management, Advanced Resuscitation Techniques to ensure that each patrol has their bases covered under the rules and regulations set to us by our governing bodies. It has been great to see more little white caps not only on our beach but also at carnivals up and down the coast. Well done to Darren Marshall and his intensive team of supporting parents for encouraging our Nippers and ensuring that they all have fun. Our annual Boat Bash carnival in December, unfortunately, did not go ahead due to lack of volunteers to help in the workforce. It was not an easy decision to make, but I was not prepared to put the health and safety at risk of the few volunteers that put their hands up. To my Management Committee, thanks for your time and dedication to our Club. I certainly understand that in this day and age how much everyone is time strapped, so for your commitment to our Club and, the surf Life Saving movement, I am greatly indebted. Finally, I wish to thank the Branch sponsors, Telstra, DHL, Westpac, Streets, Ausgrid, Coca Cola, Manly Daily, Dee Why RSL, Warringah Council and Westfield Warringah Mall for their help in contributions towards equipment for life saving. 112

3 WARRIEWOOD SLSC MATT SHERIDAN PRESIDENT We had another great start to our season with our Nippers numbers swelling to nearly 450. The Nippers trained and played hard and were rewarded with improved surf skills and impressive competition results. I would like to thank our hard working committee and all our members for their contributions in making the past season such a success. We continued to maintain our core responsibility of keeping our beach safe with our usual high standard and no major incidents. This is testament to our Director of Surf Lifesaving [Andrew Gunn] in his inaugural year who has worked tirelessly throughout the season and to our Patrol Captains and our patrol members for their time. I would also like to thank all our trainers throughout the season, in particular Vickie Dyer, for their tireless work carried out in obtaining our continual growth with awards in all areas. We once again hosted the third round of the SNB boat series which allowed us to also christen our new surf boat [Allan Collins]. We are debted to our major sponsor Pittwater RSL & Keysun. The spectators on the Warriewood Club deck had a great view. Our thanks also to the officials for their hard work on the day and Club members in holding this carnival. I would personally like to thank our sponsors for their continued support once again and their support at our events and functions. Finally, to the Branch executive and staff for their assistance during the season and, especially, to David Murray during his tenure as Branch President. 5 MONA VALE SLSC DAVID SINCLAIR PRESIDENT I have long held the view that by engaging the parents you engage the kids and that keeps the whole family group connected with the SLS movement Mona Vale has experienced another successful season in managing our core business of maintaining the safety of our beach for all users, and building and developing our team of Club members in all areas of operations. After four years of exemplary service, Jon Dibbs stepped aside from the Presidency at somewhat short notice due to work commitments and I was elected. Even though I have been around for 30-plus years there was much to be learned and in very little time. In this regard, I extend my sincere thanks to Steve McInnes and the staff in the SLSSNB office and likewise to the Board of Management, all of whom remain readily available to provide their continuing assistance and support. Our numbers continue to grow in a manageable and sustainable manner across all membership categories. With that have come the usual growing pains and issues of providing resources and maintaining standards. I m pleased to say that all of the management team have continued to productively and collectively achieve these objectives. We remain in a sound financial position notwithstanding increased costs as our competition areas grow. Our patrolling numbers are a strong as ever: we are now up to 15 patrols with each having at least eight Bronze members. All are fully compliant with all of the higher awards although finding spaces in courses for higher awards continues to be a challenge due to attendance limits and the busy lives that we all lead. Our Junior Club continues to prosper with strong numbers across all age groups and excellent support from all parents. We are blessed at our Club to have a One Club approach with many of the newer parents getting their Bronze to join patrols and do water safety. We have a strong culture of many of our established members recycling back through the Junior Club ranks as their children reach Nippers age. I have long held the view that by engaging the parents you engage the kids and that keeps the whole family group connected with the SLS movement. That said, the retention of our high school aged members remains a management issue for us [and so too, it seems, for other Clubs with whom I have spoken]. Mona Vale maintained their position as one of the nation s premier boat rowing Clubs. At the Aussie Titles in Perth our team defended its gold medal in the Club Championship of Rowing, namely the boat relay. We were proud to have six of our eight crews make it to the finals, with two crews in the A final and one of them, the mighty Mona Vale Black crew, taking silver and failing only by a whisker to make it an unprecedented four gold medals in a row. My congratulations go to them, some of whom are retiring and most notably Bryce Munro. Our most exciting development in the competition arena has been with our under 15 female board and ski group. After a couple of years of careful nurturing under the tutelage of Marty Cowper, they were released onto the carnival scene, medalling at Branch, State and Aussies. Aside from Masters competition, our U15 female relay team achieved Mona Vale s first ever medal in board competition [silver]. Exciting times lie ahead! 116

7 BUNGAN BEACH SLSC MATTHEW LLOYD PRESIDENT We are pleased to report that for another summer, beautiful Bungan Beach was a safe place to swim. The new roster is set, there are new hands up for committee, the social calendar looks great and the new website is on its way The past season, our 62nd, saw some problems with patrols, but the emphasis has been on rebuilding the patrolling, competitive and social areas of the Club. Improvements to the Club s facilities have continued. The shade cloth erected on the balcony last season, was upgraded this year and made an afternoon on the deck even more appealing. We are now able to hire out our premises, and this is proving to be a handy revenue stream. Fine tuning carries on in the operational areas and these continue to make life better for those on patrol. The competitive side of the Club has entered an exciting stage. The Bungan boaties are going through a rebirthing process. A younger breed of surf boat rowers is currently learning their trade under the tutelage of some wise old heads. We look forward to their joining the competitive ranks in the seasons ahead. Likewise, the IRB racing enthusiasts are getting up a head of steam. IRB Captain Aidan Clark has worked tirelessly in order to get things moving with a view to joining competition. Barker College s relationship with Bungan Beach SLSC continues to be mutually beneficial. Barker students and staff are vital to the Club and are very generous with their time in adding to our patrols during the busy holiday breaks. The Barker Sportsmaster was a keen participant in a run-swim-run during the past season and has vowed to return more swim fit next season. Bungan Beach members again helped provide water safety at the Murray Rose Malabar Magic Ocean Swim. This year s event saw record numbers of swimmers, more than 1000, despite the poor weather. The event was also a huge success in raising funds for The Rainbow Club s work with disabled children. Some of our younger members were also able to provide water safety at the Clarke Rd Special School s swimming carnival. A good time was had by all. Our sponsors Pittwater RSL, Barker College and donor, Woodend are to be thanked. We are most grateful for their continued support. Once again we thank Sydney Northern Beaches Branch for their assistance as well as Surf Life Saving NSW, National Council, their respective sponsors, Pittwater Council and various State Government Departments for their support via the grants received. 9 NEWPORT SLSC ROB EMERSON PRESIDENT There were many highlights but, without doubt, again the most significant one is the magnificent record of no lives lost at Newport Beach during a Newport patrol. It remains intact for the 105th season that our Club has been providing patrols The past season was an exceptional one for Newport SLSC. It remains intact for the 105th season that our Club has been providing patrols. We had 556 patrolling members provide high quality and well resourced patrols on Newport Beach throughout the season. Some 435 Nippers had fun and learnt about surf safety and surf lifesaving each Sunday on our beach. A total of 92 people attained their Bronze Medallions during the season and are now new surf lifesavers and patrolling members at Newport SLSC. Some 64 of our younger members attained their Surf Rescue Certificate [a record number for our club]. Thirty-five per cent of Newport s patrolling membership was under 18, which is absolutely fantastic for the future success of our Club. As a Club, we recommenced IRB racing at Newport and now have a strong competition team. The competitors are very enthusiastic and improving with every carnival. Our Newport competitors of all ages performed very well and achieved outstanding results for the Club, Branch and State. Newport finished first in the Open point score at the New South Wales Championships at Umina and fourth in the Open point score at the Australian Championships in Perth, the best ever result for our Club at these championships. We successfully held the second round of the Branch s Surf Boat competition, the Interstate Carnival, the Nippers Peninsula Challenge event, The Pool to Peak Ocean Swim, the Reef to Reef Paddle Race, the M Course Carnival, the Wave Warriors Nippers Carnival and a round of the Nutri-Grain qualifying series. I take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful staff at the Branch Office for their patience and assistance they provided our Club over the past season, as without their valued assistance, we would never have been able to achieve such success. 120

11 BILGOLA SLSC ROMILLY MADEW PRESIDENT Craig Poppleton s rescue on November 23, 2013 will be remembered for a long time, his patrol [Patrol 9] remained professional and coordinated during an incredibly emotional and stressful time Bilgola SLSC had a good season with active patrols ensuring no lives lost, a great Nipper program and great success by all our boat crews. We had a few incidents, some traumatic, some unexpected and some thrilling. Our patrolling members once again volunteered many hours to ensure our beach was safe. Our Patrol Captains and IRB drivers also patrolled more hours than anticipated and we acknowledge their support and commitment. Craig Poppleton s rescue on November 23, 2013 will be remembered for a long time, his patrol [Patrol 9] remained professional and coordinated during an incredibly emotional and stressful time. Craig suffered extensive trauma to his neck, shoulder and spine when he hit a sandbank. The Blackmores Ocean Swim, cancelled due to bad surf in December, 2013 and moved to Sunday, March 16, was a day that will go down in ocean swimming folklore. Graham Foran was once again our swim organiser and had spent hours reorganising the second race. Unfortunately, as we started the race the swell picked up [2-3 metres]. With the race underway, a message came through from Surfcom all beaches severe storm warning, including lightning. Nearly all the swimmers were in safely and the beach cleared when the storm hit. It caused a whiteout with the heavy rain and spray. Those swimmers still out the back were either rescued or supported in successfully. Considering the conditions, whilst there were many rescues, we only had one incident requiring external medical treatment. The Bilgola boat crews continued to excel. Our open men s crew of Mitch Foran, Anthony O Toole, Brendan Murray, Jarrad King and sweep, Don McManus had one success after another. They were the first Bilgola crew to be selected to represent Australia in the three international Tests against New Zealand, defeating the Kiwis 3-0, and they also claimed bronze at the Australian titles. Nippers season was one of the best in the past few years, with great weather and good surf. David Brown, the Junior Chairman, oversaw 500-plus Nippers, 50 Age managers and coordinated the new and successful Age Assistants program. Bilgola once again participated in the Peninsula Nipper Challenge with Avalon, Newport and Mona Vale. Our SRCs, were trained by Davd Poole and John Morley. Nipper competition coaches Steve Couzens and Rob Chant built up a very strong competitors group [30-plus kids] over the season competing at carnivals. The highlight being a sliver medal [Halina Morley] at State, which was our first medal for a number of years. Thanks must also go to our many sponsors and supporters. We could not be as effective as we are without them. 13 AVALON BEACH SLSC CHRISTINE HOPTON PRESIDENT A few congratulations should be noted. We are proud to note that SLSSNB Distinguished Service awardee, Avalon Beach SLSC Life Member and former Club President Warren Young was awarded an OAM for his services to Surf Life Saving in the Queen s Birthday Awards Avalon Beach SLSC had challenges of a different kind during the past season. Last year in May our clubhouse turned into a building site as we began major renovations that have been planned over the past six years. Operating out of three containers and a demountable for the season presented its challenges, as did court actions by one individual to attempt to stop the building continuing. Seven appearances in the Land and Environment Court and two in the Supreme Court, fortunately, did little to prevent progress and we eventually occupied the building. All who have been inside describe it as a fantastic facility, which will not only benefit our members but the community at large for many years to come. Tenders for the cafe and restaurant on the southern end are still underway and Pittwater Council has ensured monies from the lease of both will be invested by the Council in a trust to maintain the precinct, including the Club, skate bowl and swimming pool. The building wouldn t have been possible without the contributions of Pittwater Council, The NSW Government, Member for Pittwater Rob Stokes, the architects Robert Hopton and Richard Cole and the many companies, including Dulux who have provided product in kind or at cost. With all this going on, it was comforting to see that membership, particularly in the junior arena, did not drop due to the lack of facilities. Sunday mornings saw the Nippers spread across the grass at the southern end of the beach. A coffee car kept the parents happy and, thanks to good weather, many stayed on for the day enjoying the picnic atmosphere. Fortunately, our patrol season was largely uneventful with our main issues being regular breakdowns of the ATV and patrol members confined to the demountable of days of bad weather. We did gain a new patrol spot with the opening of MAX, a platform built into the dunes in the centre of the beach, and named after one of our Life Members Max Watt. It has been a welcome addition to the beach even if just a bit too small to put the tent on. A few congratulations should be noted. We are proud to note that SLSSNB Distinguished Service awardee, Avalon Beach SLSC Life Member and former Club President Warren Young, was awarded an OAM for his services to Surf Life Saving in the Queen s Birthday Awards. Also to master paddlers Chris McGuckin, Grant Salmon and Bob Richardson winning gold at the Aussies in Scarborough in the 170 years board relay. And to Chris for his gold in his favourite event, the Masters board and silver in the Ironman. Our Masters women s boat crew, Donna Wishart, Bev Tilbury, Tracey McSullea, Kate Munro and Rick Millar brought home Aussie gold once again, thus making it a record fourth in a row. It is also wonderful to see Mike Stanley- Jones selected to attend the SLSA Leadership Master class in Victoria and Club President Christine Hopton become an Independent Director on the Surf Life Saving Australia Board. Next season, Avalon Beach SLSC celebrates its 90th year of lifesaving services to the local community. It certainly promises to be an exciting one. 124

15 WHALE BEACH SLSC PHILIP SCHMIDT PRESIDENT Our veteran swimmer and former Olympian Bill Phillips won the State surf race and the Australian surf and tube races in his Masters Age group. I hope that these achievements by Bill provides incentive for the younger members at the Club to start competing After three years of Club renovations, we were still able to consolidate our membership for the season. Our building program has concentrated on the training and new social areas. Chief instructor Lara Boyle worked hard training our members. The Club now has more IRB drivers and crew, first aid and ARTC qualified members than in previous years. And we are now in a good position to train new members. We also plan to expand our membership by introducing Nippers to the Club. But first we ll be asking the AGM to pass a motion which would allow Nippers to join and their parents be trained and become Bronze qualified. Naturally, we will have to develop a program and would ask for assistance from other Clubs. We organise two major community events each season. These are the annual Neighbours night and Carols by the Sea. The Rock and Sole choir, which comprises 70 members, entertained 600 people and the local Fire Brigade boys transported Santa with sirens blasting on their fire truck. This event will be on again on December 13, Our veteran swimmer and former Olympian Bill Phillips won the State surf race and the Australian surf and tube races in his Masters Age group. I hope that these achievements by Bill provides incentive for the younger members at the Club to start competing. The Big Swim was also a successful fund raising event for us. Over the past 40 years, this event has raised in excess of $1 million. We thank our main sponsor Macquarie, as well as the members and volunteers who were working behind the scenes. I thank the Branch, Pittwater Council and the sponsors of surf lifesaving and we look forward to their continued support. 126

17 PALM BEACH SLSC KATE MACDONALD PRESIDENT Apart from the Barrenjoey Headland fire in October, our most dire incident occurred when one of our own members collapsed on the beach and suffered a massive cardiac arrest. I have always said that there is no better place to fall down than when surrounded by Lifesavers Whilst we acknowledge that Palmy is one of the calmer of the Sydney Northern Beaches, we certainly had our fair share of emergencies during the past summer, including spinal injuries, heart attacks, water rescues, limb fractures and the like. Apart from the Barrenjoey Headland fire in October, our most dire incident occurred when one of our own members collapsed on the beach and suffered a massive cardiac arrest. I have always said that there is no better place to fall down than when surrounded by Lifesavers! Upon realising our 70 year-old friend had stopped breathing, our young members [average age under 30] commenced CPR. We literally saved a life that day, and the member is back in the water after triple bypass surgery not long after the incident. The 2013/14 season in competition was possibly the most successful year in the Club s history. We may not have won an Open gold medal at Aussies, however, we did bring back some silver and bronze medals from Perth. Our Masters continue to signify the strength and passion amongst our external competitors. The team has become very close and especially enjoy hosting the Twilight Masters competition every year at Palm Beach. Palmy s beach and water team might be small, but they re dedicated and driven. Finally, our boaties experienced a superb season with three medals at Nationals, and several from State and Branch. We were unlucky not to win gold at Nationals in a few divisions, but that s the nature of surfboats. We are extremely proud of all competitors at Palmy. Their passion for the green cap is extraordinary. Our club is very lucky to have some cracking hotels in and around Sydney as our joint Major sponsors Manly Wharf Hotel, The London Hotel in Paddington and Mrs Sippy in Double Bay. Huge thanks go out to these venues for their support... it wasn t too hard to ask our members to spend time in the pubs. We welcomed a new sponsor this year in LJ Hooker Palm Beach. David Edwards and his team has been a huge part of the Palmy community over many years, so it seemed only natural for us to join forces. We have loved having LJ Hooker involved, and look forward to a long association. Palmy continues to put a large number of candidates through several awards throughout the seasons. Over the past few years, we have spent a lot of time training quality people not only to receive their Bronze Medallions, IRB crew and the like, but also in Assessing and Officiating. We are proud of our training personnel and program at Palmy and believe that we are in a good position to continue training interested young lifesavers for many years to come. Palmy would not be what it is without epic parties, traditional Club events, and fundraisers. This year was one of the busiest at Palm Beach with Casino nights, Kids fiestas, beach games etc. I would like to thank everyone in the community who attends our events, and helps make what we do, such a delight. We look forward to another successful year in 2014/15. See you on the beach. 128

19 NORTH PALM BEACH SLSC GRAHAM HOWARD PRESIDENT We would like to thank SLSNSW, Rob Stokes MP for Pittwater and the State Government for the Capital Facility Development Grant to support the building program It is pleasing to report that despite the variable weather, testing wind and often dangerous surf conditions throughout the season, North Palm Beach SLSC had another season with no lives lost while the beach was patrolled. After many years of planning and fundraising, the clubhouse was substantially renovated during the season. The second storey, extended boatshed and renovation to the ground floor was funded by the Club and supplemented with a grant from the State Government. Despite the clubhouse and the surrounding area being a building site that restricted Club activities and required all the patrol equipment to be stored at another location and transported to and from the beach each patrol, our 68 patrolling members spent more than 3,874 hours on the beach protecting the community. I would like to express my admiration for our Patrol Captains and patrolling members for an amazing effort as the disruption of the building work gave them a lot to contend with and yet they continued to provide the professional lifesaving service expected by the community and our stakeholders. Our patrols performed a number of rescues and dealt with a range of first aid incidents. Our patrols run as all-day patrols and, during the middle of the season, our members are on the beach for nine hours looking after nearly 2km of the Palm Beach. Again, this past season, many of our members maintained 100 per cent patrol attendance and some members have maintained this record for several years. The Club, in partnership with Palm Beach SLSC, continued to provide a Jet Ski service to provide additional rescue capability and support for the patrols at the northern end of the peninsula and the Club s power craft trainers and assessors ran a number of training and proficiency programs for jet ski operators from other Clubs within the Branch. Our new active members gained the Surf Rescue Certificate or Bronze Medallion and joined patrols, while many other members gained new awards and maintained proficiency of previously achieved awards. The Club is proud of the level of training provided to our members and this investment has contributed to the effectiveness and efficiency of our patrols to deal with the range of incidents encountered during the season. North Palm Beach SLSC is very lucky to have the continued generous support of our Patron, Jeff Conen. Jeff has been a Club stalwart for many years and he guided the whole planning and design process and supervised all the building work. In addition, Jeff allowed us to store all our patrol equipment at his house and put up with the early morning and late evening disruption each weekend when the patrol equipment was picked up and dropped off. I would also like to acknowledge the work of Neil Olsen who keeps the kiosk running every week throughout the year. This provides the Club with a major source of income. We would like to thank SLSNSW, Rob Stokes MP for Pittwater and the State Government for the Capital Facility Development Grant to support the building program. Special thanks also to Pittwater Council for their support and assistance with the renovation and their continued commitment to surf lifesaving. Once again the past Branch President, Dave Murray, and the staff at the Branch Office have provided great assistance to the Club throughout the season. 23 ACKNOWLEDGING OUR GREATS Bert King OAM Bert King s passion in Surf Life Saving was surfboats and sweeping. While Bert taught countless novices how to sweep, he played a huge role in power surf rescue in Australia. Known affectionately as Mr Newport, Bert and other members from the Newport Club thought there had to be a better way of making surf rescues after an incident at Avalon in the early 1960 s. Using a US designed 19 footer Bartender boat, they were it for rescues at sea from Manly to Palm Beach as the Water Police could not leave Pittwater. Through trial and error they also introduced both radio communication and oxy-vivas to Surf Life Saving. Bert was a past President of Newport Club and Manly Warringah [now Sydney Northern Beaches Branch] and held numerous State and National positions. He was also a Life Member of Newport Surf Club, Sydney Northern Beaches Branch, SLSNSW and Surf Life Saving Australia. He was also awarded an OAM for his services to surf lifesaving, specifically power surf rescue. Bert passed away on September 19, He was aged 83. His ashes were scattered off Newport Beach on October 6. Richard (Dick) Twight OAM He was a tall man and a tower of strength to the Collaroy Surf Club. Dick Twight certainly achieved a lot in Surf Life Saving It was hardly surprising he joined Collaroy as his parents owned the Tea Rooms right on Collaroy Beach. Dick joined Collaroy SLSC as a 12-year-old in 1938, remembering there were no Nippers in those days. As a competitor, Dick won six Australian gold medals one in the Open Boat and five in the March Past. He represented Australia in 1949 and captained the national team to South Africa in He served as Club President for 11 years and held other positions as well. It was inevitable he would be awarded Life Membership of Collaroy and Sydney Northern Beaches Branch. Dick received one of his greatest honours in 1990 an OAM for his services to Surf Life Saving. Twelve years later, he became Club Patron of Collaroy. Dick passed away on October 9, 2013 following a long illness. He was aged 87. David Lawler OAM If there was one thing David Lawler got a real kick out of it was patrolling his beloved North Narrabeen Beach. He did it for many years. Dave joined North Narrabeen SLSC in 1944 and was heavily involved in junior activities development in the Club and Branch. He was also a top R and R competitor and surf swimmer and won many Branch, NSW and Australian titles in Open and Masters divisions. Affectionately known as Dooga, Dave became a Life Member of the Branch in 1999 and, two years later, was honoured in the Queen s Birthday List with an OAM for his significant contribution to the Surf Life Saving movement and Amateur Swimming. He was President of Narrabeen Swimming Club. Dave passed away on July 19, He was aged Peter Liddle Peter Lincoln Liddle was a pioneer member of the Newport Jet Rescue Boat crew in 1964, a pioneer in the introduction of UHF radios to the Surf Life Saving movement on the Sydney Northern Beaches, instigated the sophisticated rescue radio repeater network established throughout NSW and was SLSNSW Radio Advisor for many years. He was a Life Member of Sydney Northern Beaches Branch, SLSNSW and Newport Surf Life Saving Club, which he joined in Peter also worked as a carnival official at all levels and was part of the Resuscitation Panel of SLSSNB for many years. In later years, ill health prevented Peter from active participation but he continued to provide valuable advice via the telephone. But Surf Life Saving was not the only beneficiary of Peter s work. He assisted the NSW Water Police, National Parks and Wildlife and the Zig Zag Railway with all their communication issues. Peter, 86, passed away on March 23, His ashes were scattered in the surf off Newport Beach on April 3, as part of the commemorative service attended by friends and fellow lifesavers.

24 VALE Graham Carlisle OAM It is little wonder Graham Carlisle became a March Past fanatic. I was a competent club swimmer but not a champion swimmer. Therefore, in my day, unless you were a champion swimmer you had no chance of cracking one of the top teams, he was quoted as saying in Freshwater Surf Club s 100-year book. Graham was asked by the late Harry Knox, a World War 11 desert rat, to forget the water and switch to the sand. And, thus, he did and became the doyen of the iconic March Past at Surf Life Saving carnivals. Graham went on to win 20 Australian March Past gold medals as a competitor and coach with Freshwater and Collaroy Clubs. He was inducted into the Australian Surf Life Saving Hall of Fame and was awarded an OAM for his services to Surf Life Saving. He was also a Life Member of Freshwater and Collaroy Clubs, Sydney Northern Beaches Branch and SLSNSW. He died peacefully, aged 82, on the northern beaches on October 7, Peter Daley Peter Thomas Daley was described by all those who knew him as one of nature s gentleman and just a great person. In Surf Life Saving there was no other Club in Peter s life than Queenscliff. The history books will show that Peter was one of the longest serving Presidents of the Club, spending 17 years at the helm from He was a boat rower and sweep at Queenscliff and later became heavily involved as an official in boats and craft events, officiating at Sydney Northern Beaches carnivals and NSW and Aussie Championships for many years. Peter was bestowed Life Memberships of Queenscliff SLSC, SNB Branch and SLSNSW. He passed away on July 17, 2014, aged 68. 25 HISTORY Manly Warringah Branch Sydney Northern Beaches Inc Board of Examiners, in anticipation of the new Branch officers were elected in December 1960 Manly Warringah Branch was formed 1st May, Up until that date, all surfing activities in this area came under the supervision of the Sydney Branch. Mr. Alan Fitzgerald, President of the North Steyne SLSC was elected first president. He held this office for eight years. At the 1st Annual Meeting, Mr. Lindsay Paton was elected treasurer and he still serves as a Branch official The first Branch Championships were staged at Newport Beach in January, In October 1961, the Avalon Lions Club made necessary finance available to construct the prototype of the Torpedo Rescue Tube. It was later adopted by SLSA Inshore Rescue Boat [rubber duckie] introduced by Avalon SLSC, now used around Australia Branch team toured South Africa Juveniles Association formed.
