1 Southern Breaks Proudly Supported by August 2017 Rescue of the Year Congratulations to Angus Miller, Angus MacKay and Lachlan Rothwell who were awarded the Rescue of the Year at SLSSA Awards of Excellence this month. Congratulations also to Paul Rothwell who was nominated for Nipper Parent of the Year. CHRISTIES BEACH Photo: Roger Wyman: Southern Times Messenger The three boys rescued a stranded kayaker and retrieved his craft on Christies Beach in March. They then continued surfing, not realising what a heroic thing it was that they had just done or mentioning it to anyone until days after the event. You can read the article, Christies Beach Surf Life Saving cadets in kayak rescue but youngsters are humble heroes from the Southern Times Messenger at The Christies Beach Surf Life Saving Club Inc is a registered Good Sport Club Promoting Responsible Service and Consumption of Alcohol

3 Club Matters From The Prez The countdown is on to the summer and with the warmer weather just around the corner we can start thinking again of the Surf Life Saving summer season. One of the many things I love about being a clubbie is that the experience is different for every member. Surf Life Saving is one sport, community organisation, emergency service or social arena where you can get as involved as you are comfortable being. There are many members that have been through Nippers or involved in the club for decades and now the club is welcoming new generations of their families, their children or grandchildren. For others our club and Surf Life Saving becomes the family they may have left in another State or country. This is the gift the club offers and one of the greatest joys of being a club member is achieving goals you may not have thought possible or supporting others as they achieve their dreams. With the new season about to begin we will welcome new members. Some may have been involved as a clubbie previously or, for many, this will be their first step into what will be an amazing culture and life changing event. For me, after 17 years I still feel like a new member and I am grateful that each week I learn a little more about our club, the movement and the special people I get to work with. I ask that you open your hearts and arms to welcome the new members who may need some encouragement but I am sure like many of us will soon call Christies home. The new season saw a combined Awards day and AGM. It was great to honor 7 club members who achieved more than 100 patrol hours as well as others who won awards for sport, patrol or supporting the club in many other endeavors both on and off the beach. It was generally a day of thanking members as some of the committee positions changed. I would like to again take this opportunity to thank both the outgoing and incoming committee for their service and ask that they support each other as we move towards our future. At the AGM we filled all positons and will meet the new season strongly. Keep an eye on the Christies Facebook page for upcoming social events but don t worry if you don t use Facebook we will message you to ensure you know what is happening. See you at the beach Mads Madeline Nurmi President
