1 Bulletin /18 SLST Endurance Series Race 3 Surf Safari Attention: Actioned by: Club Secretaries, Surf Sports Managers, Coaches, Officials, Interested Club Members, Members of Paddling and Outrigger Groups Clubs wishing to promote event to individuals who wish to compete in the 207/18 Endurance Series, Race 3 Surf Safari Date: Thursday 19 th October 2017 Contact: Don Marsh Carlton Park SLSC Event Manager M: E: dmarsh@eftel.net.au Summary Strategic Goals Key Strategies Action Attachment(s) 2017/18 Endurance Series, Race 3 Surf Safari Event Bulletin Active for Life Offer diverse sport and recreational pathways to people of all abilities Increase grassroots participation in sport and recreational activities at all levels of the movement 8.1 Grow participation in our sport and recreational activities at a grassroots level through structured and appropriately tiered programs. 8.5 Deliver surf sports events to our members which appeal to a broad participation base. 8.7 Work collaboratively with other agencies to contribute to a healthy community Share Event Bulletin to promote event to individuals who wish to complete in the Surf Safari Surf Safari Flyer Background The 2017/18 Tasmanian Endurance Series provides both Surf Life Saving members and the general public the chance to compete in mass participation long distance endurance paddling events. The events within the Endurance Series are run and administered by the local surf lifesaving clubs associated to each event; Somerset SLSC hosts the Somerset Marathon, Burnie SLSC hosts the North West Marathon and the three southern clubs, Clifton Beach, Carlton Park and Kingston Beach combine efforts to run the 49 th Surf Safari event in Hobart. This helps to raise funds and awareness for these clubs within their local communities whilst offering endurance racing opportunities to both members and the general public. SLST Endurance Series, Race 3 Surf Safari - Overview Date: Saturday 11 th November 2017 Venue: Organising Committee: Race Referee: Board Event referee: Risk Officer: The primary course will start at Southern HQ at Lower Sandy Bay heading south and return to Southern HQ Other courses have been considered however the increase in River Derwent traffic, in particular additional ferry traffic from Constitution Dock, limits other options. Competitors will be notified of any course changes on Friday 10 th November via Facebook and the SLST website. Presentations will take place at Long Beach, Sandy Bay From the 3 southern clubs; Julian Hickey, Barney Reardon, Grant Raspin, Sandra Gadsby, Craig Mackinnon and Don Marsh Julian Hickey Carlton Park SLSC Bernard Reardon- Clifton beach SLSC Simon Kay- Clifton Beach SLSC
2 Water Safety Officer: Marshalling & Briefing: Alyce Hancock Kingston Beach SLSC The Competitor and Officials briefing will take place at Long Beach Reserve, Sandy Bay. All competitors and Officials MUST be present at the briefing. Briefing for the race will take place at 9.00 am sharp for the long course (on location) and 9.30 am for the short course. Marshalling will take place immediately following. Competitor Scrutineering: Race Start Time: Starting Sequence: Important Notice: All competitors and craft will be scrutineered prior to marshalling and proceeding to the start line. This will include a check of all safety equipment. Competitors will be called to the marshalling area prior to proceeding to the start line. Racing will commence from 9.30 am sharp for the long course with short course competitors starting approximately 30 minutes later. Category start times will be staggered taking into account craft and number of entries and will be determined by the Race Referee. Race categories will start 3 minutes apart with three flags, red, orange and green indicating a countdown, a hooter at one minute and shotgun for start. Race start times will be advised at the race briefing with the anticipation that Long Course craft will be first to start. Competitors must remain behind the start line until indicated by the start flags to move forward. Please keep clear of competitors starting in the earlier start waves. Penalties may apply for any competitor breaking prior to the start gun. The event drone will be monitoring the start. Entries: ***ALL COMPETITORS MUST COMPLETE A SURF SAFARI 2017 ENTRY FORM AND DECLARATION, REGISTER IN THEIR RESPECTIVE EVENTS OR WILL NOT BE ALLOCATED A COMPETITION NUMBER*** SLST Members: Members must complete the entry form and declaration, register on the day. Clubs will be invoiced for payment. Non-Members Registration and payment can be made at registration Entry Fees - $25.00 per competitor for boat rowers and ski paddlers. $15.00 for nipper and Malibu board paddlers 2017 Endurance Series (SURF SAFARI) Entry Form and Declaration is available to download at Those who fail to register correctly will not be allocated a competitor number. The Course: The course will cover between approximately 12km and 21km, depending on conditions. The event will be conducted under strict water safety guidelines, in accordance to the SLSA Competition Manual and Safer Surf Club s Manual Guidelines. The course and its direction will be confirmed before the day of the event and advised on the SLST website and via Facebook. Event Categories and anticipated starting waves subject to change: Long Course Open Ocean and Spec Skis (M&F) Over 35 Ocean and Spec ski Open Boat Short Course Reserve and Female Boats Ski Short Course Under 19 Spec Skis ( M & F) Under 17 Spec Skis (M & F) Open Ocean/ Spec Ski (M & F) Over 35 Ocean /Spec Ski (M & F) Over 50 Ocean /Spec Ski (M &F)) Outriggers Open Outrigger (M&F) OC1 Open Outrigger (M&F) OC6 SUP s Malibu Board 4 KM Under 15 and U 17 Nipper Board 2 KM Under 13 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Entry in SURF SAFARI 2017 is subject to the following conditions. Event craft- the event is open to surf boats, SLSA specification and ocean skis, Nipper and Malibu boards, SUP s and Outriggers. The Referee has the right to refuse entry to any craft deemed unsuitable. Surf boats and SLSA Specification skis must comply with SLSA craft specifications. General Entry Requirements - All competitors must complete and sign the entry and declaration form and submit at Registration. - All competitors must read and be familiar with race bulletins and instructions provided at the race briefing
4 - All competitors must attend the race briefing. - The event is endurance in nature and even in cool conditions hydration packs are encouraged together with appropriate sun protection. Proof or training/past races may be requested. - The Event Referee has the right to refuse entry to any craft deemed unsuitable. All SLSA members wishing to compete in any race category must comply with the following requirements; - A current financial member of a Surf Life Saving Club - Must hold a current Bronze Medallion or Junior award and be proficient for the current year. Surf Boats Conditions of Entry - Surf boat rowers and sweep must wear recognized SLSA fluro tops - To assist with identification, surf boat sweeps must wear a club cap on the outside of any head protection. - Minimum age of 16 years. - Surf boats must be fully compliant with SLSA specifications. Surf boat rowers who do not meet these requirements are welcome to compete on the proviso that they comply with the following: - Must be a financial member of a surf lifesaving club - Must have completed 400 m swim in 9 minutes signed off by an accredited SLSA examiner. - Enrolled in a bronze squad. - Age minimum applies as above. - The sweep of the crew must be a currently financial member of a surf lifesaving club and currently proficient bronze holder. Surf Ski Conditions of Entry - All ski paddlers must wear a Personal Floatation Device (PFD) of a minimum of 50 newton - All ski paddlers must be attached to their craft with a tethering device. - Wear the hi vis cap provided or similar cap - Compliance with MAST bylaws is paramount as it is a condition of entry that Surf Safari 2017 competitors provide a positive role model. - Scrutineering prior to competitors going to the start line will occur. - Under 17 and under 19 category paddlers must paddle compliant SLSA Specification skis - Under 17 or under 19 paddlers wishing to compete on Ocean Skis must enter the Open division category. - Ski paddlers may be asked to provide evidence of training and past races to confirm entry. - Minimum age of entry is 15 years. Nipper and Malibu Board Conditions of Entry - All board paddlers must be a current financial member of a SLSA club. - All board paddlers must hold an appropriate award for their age group and be proficient for the current competition year. - All board paddlers must wear a SLSA approved fluro top. - Only SLSA approved and compliant boards may be used. Outriggers Conditions of Entry- TBA
5 Bulletin IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO HELP YOU ON THE DAY: Gear drop-off/ pick-up and parking logistics Parking in Lower Sandy Bay is often at a premium and congestion can occur. Competitors, Competition Managers, Water Safety, Officials, Water Safety and Workforce should refer to the site map of the Lower Sandy Bay area and take care not to infringe parking laws. The GREEN icon the entry point for Ski Paddlers. This is a gear drop off point ONLY for these competitors. Vehicle and trailer parking is available via Long Point Rd, Sandown Ave & Beechworth Rd as per the map. All trailers must be unloaded by 8.30am or access to the area may be restricted. This is also the IRB launching point. All IRB personnel must be onsite by 7.15am. The YELLOW icon points to the Registration, Briefing & Presentation Area with food, refreshments, public toilets & some shower and change facilities available on site. The BLUE icon shows the entrance to Long Point Rd. This is the entrance to be used for all competitors wishing to launch Surf Boats and Outriggers. It is also the entry point to the vehicle and trailer parking area. The PURPLE icon show the area set aside for vehicle and trailer parking for the duration of the event. When gear and craft is dropped off ALL vehicles and trailers must proceed to this parking area. Parking Marshals will be on site to assist. The RED icon points to the launching area for all Surf Boats and Outriggers. Tide will be low in the early morning to allow for vehicles to be driven on the beach if necessary. Surf Boats and Outriggers must be unloaded by 8.15am or access to the launch point may be restricted. All vehicles and boat trailers must proceed to the allocated parking area at the end of Beechworth Rd as per the map provided. Parking Marshalls will be available to assist.
