9 Maui Kjeldsen Out of the Ashes Written By Kamu Aea hard to believe what has happened since my unpretetious meeting with Lono in March met in the CVS parking lot across the Kamehmeha Shopping Center so I could help Sherpa es of his Makai magazines back to Kauaʻi. During this transaction our conversation drifted e neighbor island paddlers to feature in his upcoming issue. Although I have known Lono r a few years this was my first time I recall saying anything deeper than Hi, how was the Hi, you going now? I recommended featuring Maui Kjeldsen from Kaua i. The problem ui is not many people feel comfortable contacting him and Maui, being somewhat a recluse, didn t feel comfortable with a stranger knocking on his door for an interview. I offered article and Lono not knowing anything of me except the guy who says, Hi, how was the Hi, you going now? blindly agreed. s after our meeting I began writing this article titling it, Out of the Ashes. It was a timely opportunity to knock on Maui s door and update the paddling community about his life after the fire that destroyed his canoe and paddle business in Although he lives about two miles away and I pass his house almost daily, the knock on his door never happened. In July, Lono contacted me again about the article, but it was never quite ready. It is now September, six months has passed since I wrote my first sentence and to my surprise Lono told me he wanted to feature this article with the Molokaʻi Hoe 60 th anniversary. I m not sure what readers are expecting for such an honored event. If it is twisted Ka Iwi, Pailolo on steroids, or a flat regatta, we all know how important timing is. Here are a few timeless lessons from the life of a warrior who has battled with the best of them and has more than earned the right to be featured in Makai magazine s Molokaʻiʻs 60 th crossing edition. E aloha kakou. Unless you have been there, it is impossible to know how it feels to get a call at around 5:30 in the morning from someone telling you, in a matter-of-fact tone, I just wanted to let you know that you might be getting a call from the fire chief. The shop is on fire. Kia Kaha Canoes and Paddles was ablaze! Assuming a mental fetal-position, my immediate defensive reaction was, You re kidding, but I knew Maui wasn t kidding. If you really knew Maui, you d know that, under all his muscles and stoic Wai Nui OC-1 makai ocean lifestyle September/october

11 demeanor, that, although he is really both funny and witty, he is not a kidder. Although Maui was on duty in the Koloa Fire Station, all he really knew was that no one had been hurt. However, the cause of the fire was still unknown. Fire trucks that were leaving the neighborhood station and heading towards the shop, which was located ten-miles away, first confirmed the fire. As I drove towards the shop, the morning traffic became unusually slow. Next came the smell of smoke, and then, finally, from a distance I could see the entire block coned off, as well as the flashing police cars, which were reminiscent of a crime scene. The remnants of the warehouse at the shop s location looked like a structure following a military aerial-attack. The only thing that concerned me was whether our shop had been responsible for this disaster. If so, I could be liable. My name was on the lease, and, technically, it was my shop. It was this shop that drew Maui and me together. It began in 2004, when Maui moved from Oʻahu to Kauaʻi. Somehow he found out I had a shop. Only a very small group of people knew about my obscure canoe-repair operation. Everyone in the international paddling community knew Maui, so you can imagine my surprise when I got an unexpected call from him. I knew he wasn t calling me because he was looking for a training partner or needing a repair done on his canoe. So, why would he call me? He needed space to begin making paddles. So began the pattern of surprise and unexpected phone calls from Maui. When I first met Maui, not only his accent, but other traces of his Aotearoa roots greeted me. Although his father Kris was a lifeguard, paddler and sailor, he chose to raise Maui and his older sister, Kapua, in the rugged bush of Pawarenga, a small community further north of the north island. Here was a bull, the salt of the earth, a barefooted Kiwi who looked more suited to carrying a football on the All Blacks National Rugby Team, than a paddle. Fortunately for Maui, through a series of serendipitous life-events, the circle of mauka and makai closed. His mother attended an art school in the south island, where Kris packed his family and temporarily settled. While waiting for his mother to finish class, Kris would take Maui to paddle a kayak. As they say, the rest is history. In this location, Kris interest in outrigger racing was also rekindled. In December, 1985, when the Maori built the voyaging canoe Hawaiʻi Nui, and sailed it from Tahiti to land in Okahu Bay, Auckland, Kris was there. Along with the commemoration of this historic event, outrigger canoes were gifted to the people of Aotearoa. The combination of these events, along with a hand- BE PREPARED! 12 ful of kindred-souls, birthed the renaissance of the waka ama in Aotearoa. Maui was there at ground zero. Being a quick study, Maui soon began competing in the outrigger, and in 1988, he competed in the waka ama world sprints, held at Keʻehi, and again in 1990, in New Zealand. In 1992, he traveled to Sacramento, where he won the junior waka ama world sprints title. Following this victory, Maui s focus shifted towards the 1996 Olympics and the K1 kayak, thus expanding his paddling repertoire to include the K1 and surf ski. In 1993, at eighteen years of age, he steered their New Zealand crew to fifth-place in the Molokai Hoe, the same year Faa a won, busting the door wide for the Tahitians. That same year, he came in second in Tahiti s Heiva. In 1995, he place third in, what is considered by many, to be the worldʻs most prestigious paddling race, Tahiti s Super Aito. To date, this is the highest that any international paddler has ever finished in the Super Aito. In 1996, Mauiʻs New Zealand K1 Olympic crew missed qualifying by ten one-thousandths of a second, against the strong European teams. In 2001 and 2003, as a crewmember on Team New Zealand/Hawaiʻi, they won the Molokaʻi Hoe. In the Molokaʻi to Oʻahu Kaʻiwi Channel OC1 solo-race, he placed third. As a seven-time waka ama solo-champion, and a member of New Zealand s National Kayak team, Maui s success is both raw and disciplined. It s another beautiful evening, even at the Koloa fire station, where we are sitting. I can tell that Maui has been uncomfortable talking about himself, especially about his past accomplishments. The sky is turning National Geographic red, and as the sky above us changes color, we change topics. Maui wants to show me something on his phone. It s a picture of a canoe. His latest, one that came out of the ashes, crafted in a back yard (an environment that both Maui and I prefer). Like a proud father showing me his newborn, he displays his family on a three-man sailing canoe that he built. It is his first canoe since the fire, and I know it won t be his last. He shows me another picture, this one of the Mahimahi OC6 that is under a tent in the backyard. It was a hull that he built in 2000, in the style of his father s craftsmanship, of the racing fleet for the 2006 Waka Ama World Sprints, held in Aotearoa. Although he mentions his father s passing a year ago in June, Maui Kjeldsen Ohana, TaiMana, Jody & Maiha 12 makai ocean lifestyle September/october 2012

13 focuses on the hulls that were in Krisʻ possession at the time, but have since been shipped to Kauaʻi, and how he would like to tweak them. He also talks about the past hulls that he helped shape while at Outrigger Connection, such as the Sting Ray, the Fuze, the Fusion, and the Makaha 4-Man. He talks about the hulls that he has designed and built here on Kauaʻi, the Hiko and the Wainui, which I helped ship to China, just days before the inferno. He talks about the future, with the hope of a craftsman, not only wanting to design, but build with his own hands, another racing hull, another paddle, another steering blade Although he is passionate to create with fiberglass, carbon fiber and epoxies, it is clear that his focus is on the next generation, the one he picks up and drops off at school. He is living in the present, and not in his stellar past as a paddler and builder. He has not been in a racing canoe since his father passed away. It is all about his family. When I was small, my kupuna told me that fire is cleansing. We grew up burning rubbish: leaves, household rubbish, hao bushes. It didn t matter, as fire does not discriminate. Once, I remember our neighbor s fire burning for a week, and when it started dying down, he threw in tires and diesel fuel. Although Maui and I returned to the shop to survey the fire s damage at different times, I m sure we shared the same amazement of how created-things had vaporized, without a trace. This evening, the fire that forced us into different paths, is never mentioned. Neither of us has found space to create, but there remains a silver lining. We understand ourselves better. We see the good, the bad, the things we want to change, as well as the things that have already changed. We return to what we value: relationships, simplicity, life, love, and all those things that are fireproof. Oahu s Hui Nalu Canoe Club #142 captured the win in the overall women s race. Only about four minutes ahead of second place, Hui Nalu finished the 2012 Queen Lili uokalani Long Distance Outrigger Canoe Race from Kailua to Honaunau in 2:20:55. Kai Opua Canoe Club 1 finished a strong second with a time of 2:24:25. 26 Mokoli i Paddle Classic By Gwen Kekaula The First Annual Mokoli i Paddle Classic kicked off without a hitch on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Kualoa Regional Park. While heavy clouds loomed ominously along the Koolau mountains, sunny skies prevailed over the first ever Paddling for Possibilities event presented by Assistive Technology Resources of Hawaii (ATRC Hawaii) and co-sponsored by the University of Hawai i Center on Disability Studies. Well over 200 people were in attendance and 76 participants competed in three separate races to raise funds for assistive technology equipment like software and peripherals. ATRC Hawaii assists persons with limited mobility, hearing or sight challenges to access computers and other information technologies, and all the money stays in Hawai i. The competition included a Novice Division, where participants paddled once-around Mokoli i Island; an Expert Division, where paddlers went around the island twice and an OC canoe relay that consisted of teams of 4, each going around the island once on a singleperson canoe. Kim Celebre placed first in the Overall Female SUP, Expert Division with a time of 34:46, paddling twice around Mokoli i island. She moved here in 2003 and paddled canoe for Kalihi Kai for a year and now paddles for Manu O Ke Kai for the past six years. I got into standup maybe six years ago and have done races every summer, especially around the North Shore, but never on this side, she said. There was a challenging upwind section on the backside of the island, but it was fun hugging the coastline and there were some swells. The second time it seemed like the wind might have picked up a little but by then your body is warmed up and comfortable. I had a good time. Overall it was a really beautiful day. It was nice to paddle around such a monumental spot and paddle for a cause. It was cool that they had a novice and an expert division. It was a well-run event, especially for it s first year. When asked if she plans to participate again next year she said, Absolutely! It was a lot of fun, great prizes, food vendors. It was a great day for my family to have a lot fun and make a day of it. Jordan Gomes, is a newbie. At 23, he never competed in the water before. This was his first race yet he managed to complete one lap around Mokoli i with a time of 16:58, placing him first in the men s (20-49) Novice Division. I didn t even have my own board, I had to borrow a friend s Star Board for the race, he said. Going out was all right but going around the island was tricky. I fell off a couple times. You get more swell out there and it puts the ocean into it. As for how he felt after completing the race he said, It kinda got me hooked. I was really there for the experience, it was real fun. The race was easy, everything went smoothly, it was well organized and everyone was really nice. He said he ll definitely compete again next year. Trish Bratton, 28, has lived in Hawaii makai ocean lifestyle JUne/JUly JUNE2012.indd 9 6/22/12 12:49 PM for three years now and only started prone paddle boarding a month-and-ahalf ago. In fact, she and her boyfriend participated in the 5-mile Ocean Quest race from Waimea to Haleiwa the day after she bought her first board. She read about Paddling for Possibilities online through the Hawaii Paddle Board Association website and decided to sign up for the event. I was really super nervous, she said because her boyfriend was out of town and she was there by herself. It was 26 makai ocean lifestyle September/october 2012

27 Kualoa really empowering that I could do that and get out of my comfort zone. I was the only female prone paddle boarder, she said. At first I signed up for the novice division but then at the last minute I switched to the expert division to give myself a little more of a challenge. She challenged herself by going twice around Mokoli i with a time of 52:23. It was fun and great to go around Chinaman s hat. I ve driven past it before and drove to the park, but I ve never even gotten out of the car. I m just glad I got to participate and finish, she said, It was a good turnout for the 1 st year and I hung out with some really great ladies. Hopefully, next year, there ll be more female paddle boarders. Kawika Shook, Information and Outreach Specialist for Assistive Technology Research Centers of Hawai i, is the brainchild of this event. When working at ATRC we came upon an event done by IPAT (Interagency Program for Assistive Technology) in North Dakota. They created a financial funding program for assistive technology called Pedaling for Possibilities, raising money on stationary bikes. We were inspired to do something similar in Hawaii to help our state and community. We wanted to do something that would appeal to all genders and ages. The sport of standup paddle boarding, as you know, is the fastest growing sport in the world. My sport was football, but I always loved paddling and being out in the open ocean. We thought it would be cool to put on a race that would give back to the community and assist individuals in Hawai i with disabilities. Once we decided on a SUP/ Paddleboard/OC1 Race the next step was to find a location. My family is from Waikane and Kualoa Regional Park is right down the road. How cool would it be to put on a beneficial race at Kualoa incorporating Mokoli i island? We developed the idea and as they say the rest is history. We are really happy and blessed to have the turnout we did for the 1st year. We have to make a few adjustments but overall the feedback was really good from participants and spectators. We are excited and looking forward to next year. For the complete list of race results go to Also visit ATRC.org and cds.hawaii.edu to find out more about their programs, the work that they do and how you can help. 28 Surf Art Kids Project Completes Two Murals During U.S. V Awareness Day Celebrations in Waianae Oahu, September 19, On September 15th, artist Hilton Alves completed two murals during U.S. Vets Pai olu Kaiaulu Homeless Shelter Awareness Day celebrations in Waianae. As part of Brazilian Day celebrations in the Unite States, this mural project featured special guest tattoo and graffiti artist from São Paulo, Markone. Two murals were completed in less than 8 hours beautifying two structures at the shelter which houses families and individuals experiencing financial difficulties on the Leeward coast. Speaking about the project artist Hilton Alves said, The goal was to introduce community art in the life of these children and encourage them to use art as a source of inspiration for life. U.S. Vets Pai olu Kaiaulu staff and Surf Art Kids volunteers involved over 200 children and community members in the mural process. Inspired by Hilton s live art exhibition, children participated in drawing activities and were asked to record why they love art. The children also volunteered to help the artist in the mural process and painted their own sea life on the second community mural. These murals were the 12th and 13th Surf Art Kids murals on the island. The first mural featured a perfect wave 9 x 30 feet in size and was completed in less than three hours. The second mural featured an under water theme and included the work of Markone and the children artists. Marcelo Caverna, Operations Manager of the Brazilian Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii and Susie Turner, of Aloha Private Tours, were special volunteers also assisting in the mural process. Hilton Alves created surf Art Kids in 2003, in Sao Paulo, where the artist gave painting lessons as a volunteer in a community center in the city. In 2007, Surf Art Kids completed it s its first Hawaii mural in Waialua on Oahu. Since then, over 4,000 children have been reached through the project.
