Six times winner Ali Day Stories by: SLSA Media and Allie Britton Photos: Harvpix Long Course Surfers Paradise Ironman Ali Day became the undisputed king of the Coolangatta Gold bolting to a recordbreaking sixth title while Northcliffe newcomer, former swim star Georgia Miller added her name to the women s trophy for the very first time. I just can t believe it really that a kid that was 18 years old that couldn t get on the podium - now I ve got six. Ali was never headed from the moment he jumped off his ski at Miami after the 21-kilometre ski paddle from Coolangatta five minutes in front of the 23 strong field and raced over North Burleigh hill like a gazelle, increasing his lead with every stride. It was into the water at Burleigh Heads for the three-kilometre rough water swim, which saw many of the competitors fall off the pace in the cool conditions before jumping on to his board in front of a huge Burleigh crowd for the 6.1km paddle to Currumbin before the final charge home in the final run leg to Coolangatta only slowing to high-five his fans. Crossing the line looking as fresh as when he started Day stretched his lead to win by almost 21 minutes a new record winning margin. Ali won the day in 4 hours:01 minutes 00 seconds with Surfers Paradise teammate, Kiwi Max Beattie second in 4:21.58 and Sydney s Mitch Allum from Wanda third in 4: ssm

I love this event so much, Day said. I had a crack at it in the under-19s and it broke me. Today I was pretty emotional, just tears of joy looking at my dad Ross and my brother and my partner and all my friends that I had there today. I just can t believe it really that a kid that was 18 years old that couldn t get on the podium - now I ve got six. Ali Day has just won a record breaking number six Coolangatta Gold Title, with discipline entrenched in him, Day s view on success is now automatic. Nothing beats hard work. If you can get through 18 weeks of training, looking after yourself, your diet, sleep, and mental space, you ve got a great chance come race day. Day s passion for the sport he loves is reflected through his training and racing, he said it has never been about going for six or seven titles, its about making the most of every chance to learn and to race. If the opportunity, the body and the mind are there, I will line up and I will race again. Day said. Being apart of such an incredible community has resulted in an incredible life. Said Day. It s shaped the person I am completely, taught me the strongest life lessons, and provided lifelong friends and mentors. Standing at the top of the podium, with now six Coolangatta Gold Titles to his name, Ali Day is living his dream, again triumphant in the 2018 Coolangatta Gold! Top right: Max Beattie, second place. 8 In the women s race Georgia Miller, who recently moved from Newport to re-join former Manly coach Naomi Flood at Northcliffe, not only celebrated her first Coolangatta Gold victory but also her grand mother Rae Sankey s 86th birthday with Nana Sankey the first to congratulate her winning grand daughter who carries Rae as her second name. The 21-year-old Miller had the encouragement of her new Northcliffe Club handlers, including former Australian surf champion Mark Williams spurring her on when she started to struggle. Georgia Miller moved to the Gold Coast in May this year and has not looked back since. Experiencing an entire new chapter in her life, Miller has embraced every minute of change, loves living in the heart of Surf Lifesaving and in doing so, has conquered a lifelong dream. Miller moved up from New South Wales, joined her new club Northcliffe, began training under coach Naomi Flood, alongside her new squad GON (Girls Of Northcliffe), and has added a new name to the list of Coolangatta Gold champions, taking out this year s iconic event. I love the feel of Surf Sports on the Gold Coast you are always bumping into clubbies, it feels like the hub of the sport and the place to be if you are looking to excel in surf sports. Miller said. Miller s fresh start delivered exactly what she wanted with the step out of her comfort zone into a new environment where she spent a lot of time in the lead up to race day. I put so much time and effort into the Gold, I sacrificed a lot, and to walk off the beach with that trophy meant absolutely everything to me. Miller said. I ve learnt so much in the lead up, from training to living out of home and about myself, it s definitely been a challenge, but I am proud and am absolutely loving it! By failing to prepare you are preparing to fail, a quote Miller lives by. I literally look up to all of those girls on the trophy, so to be next to them is such an honour and I will remember this day for the rest of my life and it s definitely the biggest win of my career. 6 ssm

Miller also recorded a stunning time of 4:29.22 to beat teammate Danielle McKenzie (4:39.08) and Noosa s Lana Rogers third in 4: I m so excited and so happy. This whole move up here to Northcliffe and the training has really paid off, I m speechless, said Miller. I got to about halfway on the run and started having a little panic attack and was so lucky that one of my handlers was there to calm me down because I was really close to pulling out. My breathing got all funny and I started to tear up and I thought that was going to be it for me. But he got me to calm down and keep pushing through and I m so lucky to have such great handlers and support. If I were to be completely honest, I wasn t sure how to begin. Emotion is hard to express, I guess the footage from the 2018 Coolangatta Gold reveals what I was feeling when I had to pull out of the event. Disappointment, embarrassment and heart ache. At that moment it feels like your world is ending. All the hours put into preparation for one day, for one event and at that one moment, to have it all taken from you, honestly, it hurt. As time passed, I realised the true meaning of the saying it is not about the destination, but all about the journey. Competition, training and life all has its ups and downs. Some days we feel great as we jump onto our ski s, some days we feel like we are swimming along the bottom of the pool and other days life just happens, we can t make training, work occurs, or injury arises. Falling into an unseen pothole and retearing my Plantar Fascia was purely up to the universe. At that moment heading into the swim I knew that I would not be crossing the finish line, it was heart wrenching. We are all faced with testing occasions, how you choose to overcome them is entirely up to you. Bottom left: Danielle McKenzie. Bottom right: Lana Rogers. 8 ssm

Asked how she felt about joining previous winners Hayley Bateup, Alicia Marriott, Brodie Moir, Liz Pluimers, and Courtney Hancock? I literally look up to all of those girls on the trophy, so to be next to them is such an honour and I will remember this day for the rest of my life and it s definitely the biggest win of my career. Said an elated Miller. n TJ Hendy, Surfers Paradise SLSC Ironman, Ali Day s training partner and Champion Ironman Trevor Hendy s son, had to pull of out of the 2018 Coolangatta Gold mid swim due to hypothermia. Jumping off his ski at Miami in second place, TJ says he was feeling good for the swim and had taken the nutrition that he had planned. Hendy made it half way along the beach at Burleigh where is cap and goggles were awaiting him, grabbing his cap and bending his elbow caused his right arm to cramp, laughing it off, Hendy carried on his way running into the 3.5km swim leg. Swimming became hard for Hendy early on with cramps now occurring in both his arms. I was unable to reach entirely forward; my left arm was doing absolutely nothing under water. Stopping suddenly with a scream to his Dad Trevor who was paddling beside him, Hendy felt his whole-body cramp. I felt my neck, back, hips and adductors all cramp up, even my fingers. Dad calmed me down, told me to take some deep breaths and to relax. After taking some time to relax in an attempt to stop the painful cramping, Hendy put his head down and began swimming again but it didn t take long before it happened again. Shivering, cramped and disappointed Hendy was pulled into the IRB and taken to first Aid where his temperature declared him to have suffered hypothermia. Not deterred from this years Coolangatta Gold, Hendy has the gruelling event back on his list of races to conquer in the future. 10 ssm

Short Course winner Tom Gallagher Thomas Gallagher is getting a liking for the Gold Coast. The 19-year-old all the way from the City of Perth club raced to a commanding victory in the 2018 open short course event. Short Course Gallagher, who suffers from cerebral palsy and pancreatitis, was first out of the water after the opening 10.5km ski leg of the men s race and extended his advantage in the 2km swim, 3km board and the final 5km run. The West Australian looked perfectly at home in the east coast arena definitely a good omen as he will be moving across the continent to join powerhouse club Currumbin Beach Vikings in the New Year. Tom led from start to finish to win the 21km race in two hours 19 minutes 29 seconds from Zak Van Dartel (Terrigal, 2:27.50) and Chris Boult (Kurrawa, 2:28.01). Gallagher, who suffers from cerebral palsy and pancreatitis, was first out of the water after the opening 10.5km ski leg of the men s race and extended his advantage in the 2km swim, 3km board and the final 5km run. This was my first Coolangatta Gold so I knew if I had a good ski paddle then that would set me up," he said. I went into the front pack on the ski and really worked my main leg the swim because you never know what s going to happen on the board. I started suffering from the pancreatitis a couple of years ago and sometimes I have attacks after my races and end up in hospital, lucky I didn t have one today. I m moving to Currumbin in January after spending the last couple of offseasons training with Michael King at the Vikings, he s a good coach and it s great training with the group. I ve loved my five years at City of Perth under the coaches there but it was time to make a move. The open women s race was much closer with Emily Doyle (Newport, 2:36.55) winning from Jazmin Lewsam (Southport, 2:37.58) and Kiera Albertsen (City of Perth, 2:45.06). For Doyle, it was her second short course title in succession, winning the Under 19s last year, although her plans to repeat her 2017 success literally hit an obstacle in August. I was injured seven weeks ago after 12 ssm

I twisted my ankle on a tree root, training at the beach, running 500s, and I couldn t walk on it and I actually did some ligament damage, she said. I couldn t run or swim for three weeks and I had to withdraw from my State Championships for swimming and my running took a massive step back and I just focused on getting everything else fit. But it s all fine now, this was a kind of test for it. Doyle s race didn t get off to the best start and she finished the ski leg in eighth place, but her swimming skills soon turned around the deficit and opened up a lead. I ve been a swimmer all my life and I ve come from an endurance background, she said. I have run the 14km City to Surf since I was seven years old. In the swim it was like a swim-down for me, I ran in tired and came out fresh. As soon as that swim was over I knew it was my time to put my head down and get going. n Short Course winner Emily Doyle For Doyle, it was her second short course title in succession, winning the Under 19s last year, although her plans to repeat her 2017 success literally hit an obstacle in August. Men s Under-19 winner Joe Collins recorded the fastest time of the day, finishing the course one second quicker than Gallagher in 2:19.29 and ahead of Charlie Verco (2:21.52) and Zach Morris (2:22.44). Grace Harris (Torquay 2:39.50) was the fastest in the under-19 category with Kiera Warn (2:41.36) second and Emily Eaves (2:42.58) third. Outstanding Masters competitor Alison Pegg (3:00.40) won the Over-50 women s race by more than 40 minutes from Caroline Webster (3:42.38) and Hilary Ingle (3:43.20). 14 ssm

Youth The future of Surf Life Saving is golden with a great turnout for the Coolie Gold Youth challenge Some of the Gold Coast s finest future surf lifesavers were joined on the start line by competitors from all over the country including Victoria, WA, NSW, to race the junior challenge. The youth event took place on famous Coolangatta Beach on Sunday morning while the main race was under way. The Nipper and Youth competitors were a 250 plus throng of junior surf lifesavers keen to challenge themselves as they made their way the through a course which consisted of a 300m soft sand run, a 400m swim, 400m run, 500m board and then a 50m run to conclude under the elite finish arch. 16 ssm

The event course is specifically designed for aspiring surf lifesavers and future Ocean and beach event competitors (under 11 s to under 16 s) who are up for a challenge and keen to be part of the main event experience. n ssm 17

With an excelling finish the Australian Surf Lifesaving Team won back the world crown ahead of Nation rival New Zealand at the Lifesaving World Championship in Adelaide. With a tight battle between the Aussies and the Kiwis throughout the competition the Australian team dug deep to finish just 34 points ahead in a late charge to victory. Australian Ironwoman superstar Georgia Miller led the Aussies to success taking home seven gold medals including the individual women s Oceanwoman, Surf race, Swim and Ski events. 22 Australian Captain Harriet Brown pushed through a severe foot injury. Determined not to let her teammates down, Brown claimed a second in the Board and a third in the Oceanwoman. I m so stoked, it was a little bit painful but I got through it. Brown said she was so proud of each and everyone of her team mates. They pulled through in each event, when we had to lift we lifted, and to come through on top in the end it s very satisfying. Ironmen Matt Bevilacqua and Kendrick Louis performed well over the competition with Bevilacqua coming home with a second in both the board and ski events. In the pool Prue Davis shone, while beachies Jackson Symonds and Elizabeth Forsyth proved too strong in their respective events. Symonds, untouchable in the beach sprint with Forsyth taking out the women s beach flag event before teaming up and anchoring her team to victory in the women s beach relay. Australian Team head coach Kurt Wilson said he was absolutely stoked with the outcome. Team Fairy Bread, Driver Kate Czerny Inaugural International IRB Competition Australia captain Kate Czerny from Williamstown S&SLC, put her body and soul on the line when IRB racing made its international National Teams debut at the 2018 World Lifesaving Championships at Glenelg today. Czerny, one of the finest IRB drivers ever produced in Australia, overcame a painful back injury to lead the Aussies in her finest hour. Czerny drove her IRB teammates to two gold and two silver medals golds in the Female IRB Mass Rescue and the IRB Rescue Tube and silvers in the IRB Rescue and Mixed IRB Teams Rescue. 20 ssm

Rescue Tube Rescue The Gold Coast-based member of the Surf Life Saving Hall of Fame was given one of the sport s highest honours on the eve of the championships when named captain of her country s first representative IRB team and she produced a real captain s knock. Czerny drove her IRB teammates to two gold and two silver medals golds in the Female IRB Mass Rescue and the IRB Rescue Tube and silvers in the IRB Rescue and Mixed IRB Teams Rescue. In the end it wasn't quite enough to snatch the inaugural Harry Brown OAM Memorial Trophy away from New Zealand who won four gold and three silvers to Australia s three gold, two silvers and one bronze medal. Australia s Sam Bell on fire! ssm 21

Youth Competition The Australian Youth Lifesaving Team claimed a close second place at the World Lifesaving Championships finishing just 14 points behind New Zealand. Young guns Tiarnee Massie and Naomi Scott dominated the women s ocean events. Massie took out both the board and ski events, finishing her impressive performance with a third in the Oceanwoman. Scott joined forces diving into the pool with Australia s three golden girls, teen superstar Lani Pallister, Anthea Warne and Keely Booth. The four-some were unstoppable taking out both the 4 x 50m Obstacle Relay and the 4 x 50 Medley relay. Pallister and Warne went one two in the 100m Rescue Medley and the 200m Super Lifesaver, while Pallister took out the 200m Obstacle and the 50m Manikin Carry, Warne won the 50m Manikin carry with fins respectively. In the men s Ky Kinsela went head to head with team mate Mitch Coombes, the pair dominating in the ocean events. Kinsela took out both the Oceanman and Board event, with Coombes taking the win in the ski and finishing a close second in the board event. On the beach the quick legs of Michael Hanna saw him taking out both the men s beach flags and beach sprint. Leah Rampoldi came home with a win in the women s beach flags and a tight third in the beach sprint. New Zealand wrapped up competition with a narrow win of 1023 points to Australia s 1009 points, with France taking home third place with 716 points. n Jemma Smith leads the pack 22 ssm

Open Interclub Competition After seven enormous days of fierce competition, two of the world s most successful surf clubs were separated by just 10 points, with Australian premier club Northcliffe defending their world crown over accelerating club, the Currumbin Beach Vikings. Both clubs proved dominant in both pool, in the ocean and across the sand at the World Lifesaving Inter-Club Championships. Northcliffe who were missing team members, world s greatest surf sports athlete Shannon Eckstein, Ironman Luke Cuff and Ironwoman Harriet Brown, knew that competition was going to be hot but they didn t expect the Vikings to attack so fiercely. In what was one of the closest Inter-Club battles in history, Northcliffe chairman David Shields, while extremely proud of his team, was full of praise for Currumbin. Currumbin were on fire in the water and full credit to them I thought their competitors were just spectacular and they really went above and beyond. This is a very special win for us under the circumstances (losing athletes) and words cannot explain just how special it is, said Shields. With Northcliffe proving too strong with 937 points to Currumbin s 927 points and Italian club, Insport Rane Ross, dominating the pool events and taking third position with 634 points, the world crown will remain on the Gold Coast until 2020 where the Lifesaving World Championships will be held in Riccione, Italy. Currumbin Viking Queen Karlee Nurthen proved unstoppable taking out both the Oceanwoman and Board events at the Interclub World Championships. The 22-year-old entrepreneur started her dream day when she took out the tightly contested woman s board final before lining up less than 30minutes later to contend the Oceanwoman. In tricky and cold conditions Nurthen used both her surf skills and strength on her craft to secure the greatest day in her sporting career. It means so much to me. Over the last few years I haven t seen the results I wanted from all the training I have done, said Nurthen. The training under Michel King has been so intense and to have it all come together race after race today was just incredible. Returning home as World Champion Nuthern will set her sights high for the rest of the season and channel her energy into building a successful business with Sister and former Ironwoman Amy Nurthen. Currumbin late-morning charge led by Viking Karlee Nurthen who took out both the Ski and Oceanwomen brought the point score too tight to relax. With just two events remaining both clubs threw anyone and everyone into beach flags with the water-based athletes showing their diversity and athleticism. Northcliffe s Kristyl Smith scrambled in the sand for both flags and points, while Currumbin s Hayden White and Corey Fletcher showed impressive skill with White just missing the A Final. ssm 25

Ally Bull Ali Day cemented his dominance at the Interclub World Championships claiming his first World Title. The Surfers Paradise Ironman paddled away in the final ski leg using his knowledge and skill to avoid what had become a traffic jam around the apex turning buoy. I was lucky enough to stay in the flow and I came out the other side of it after so many little challenges throughout the race, said Day. This world title sits very nicely actually, I ve trained a long time for this and to win, it s amazing. Ironman Legend Trevor Hendy was quick to congratulate Day admitting world titles are hard to come by. Day teamed up with Club mates, Max Beattie, TJ Hendy and Nathan Gray to also claim victory in the Oceanman Relay. Paddling the final Ski leg stroke to stroke with Currumbin s Hayden White, Day paddled over a small chop to get the edge on White before tagging team anchor Gray to sprint their team home to success. They are probably the hardest races to win and to win it with it those boys, it just feels so special. IRB Racing Williamstown now on top of the IRB world Australia s premier IRB club, Williamstown SLSC, are now standing on top of the world after the World Inter-Club IRB Championships in Glenelg. Teams from all over Australia plus clubs from New Zealand, Great Ali leads the 2k run pack Britain, Denmark, Japan and Belgium lined up for the eightevent program. At the end of the three event program it was Williamstown, with Australian team, captain Kate Czerny at the helm who were declared World Champions from Gold Coast club Kirra and Sunset (NZ) third. Czerny drove her Williamstown crews to the limit to record impressive wins in both the Teams and the Tube events the Teams over NSW crews North Cronulla and Kiama Downs and the Tube ahead of fellow Victorian club Barwon Heads/13th Beach and North Cronulla. New Zealand s No 1 club Sunset Lifeguards won both the Female Rescue and Mass Rescue, proving too slick for Williamstown and 26 ssm

The men s events saw Queensland driver from Kirra Ben Domeracki in dominant form with the century old Gold Coast club taking the quinella in the Rescue event with Kirra second ahead of Kiama Downs. Domeracki also showed his class in the Mass Rescue with another gold beating Hunter club Caves Beach and Central Coast club, Terrigal. Beach Kurrawa beaches made history on the sand taking out the double in both the men and women s beach relay final. The women s team of Nicole Kay, Taylor Stickler, Casie Fyall and Bree masters proved to strong finishing ahead of Currumbin and Cronulla. In the men s event Kurrawa again stamped their dominance early on, with Jason Gough, Sam Ross, Sam Mispelhorn and Connor Loughnan running away with the win from Wanda and False Bay. Currumbin Viking Olivia Eaton shone through her World Championship campaign taking out the women s Beach Sprint for New Zealand then returned to represent her club of Currumbin dominating the Interclub Championship beach sprint and anchoring her team home in the beach relay. Elizabeth Forsyth also took the double in the flags taking out both the Interclub and National championships representing her club Currumbin and making her debut on the Australian team. Kurrawa s Casie Fyall and City of Perth beach star Gabrielle Murphy filled the minor placings. In the Mens Northcliffes Jackson Symonds powered home with a convincing win ahead of Newport s Jake Lynch and Kurrawa s Sam Mispelhorn. 28 ssm

Symonds also took out the beach sprint for Australia during the National Teams Championship. In the youth North Cronulla s Alex Rampoldi excelled in the beach flags taking home a double win at both the National and Interclub Championships. Mia McWilliam from Alexandra Headland and Coledale s Jasmine Yew took second and third respectively for the Interclub Championship. In the Men s Mollymook s Sam Zustovich caused upset taking out the youth Interclub beach flags ahead of Australian team member and World Teams champion Michael Hannah from Elouera with Maguire Shane, Umhlanga Rocks in third. n Lani Pallister, the unstoppable teen from Alexandra Headland has stepped up to the world stage and cemented herself as a name to remember. The 16-year-old who has her sights set on the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Trials has walked away from her World Youth National Team and Interclub World Championship campaign with 9 Gold, 2 Silver and a Bronze. Pallister spent her first week in Adelaide representing Australia in the Youth team where she dominated each swim event she contested. Taking out the 50m Manikin Carry, the 200m Obstacle, setting a new youth world record in both the 200m super lifesaver in and the 100m rescue medley in a time of Transferring her swimming into the ocean Pallister went on to win the Youth National Team Surf race. Changing from her Australian cap, into her club colours and racing in the open age group there was no swimming her down. In the pool Pallister again took out the 200m Obstacle in a time of just 0.06 outside of the current world Record. Teaming up with club mate Tiarne Raymond, the Alexandra Headland duo claimed victory in the line throw. Pallister went on to claim a second place in the 100m rescue medley and broke her Youth WR for the second time during the championships claiming a 3rd in the 200m Super lifesaver in a time of The success kept on coming for the young gun when she took out the Open surf race in cold and rough conditions. ssm 29

Ocean Thunder Round 1 The opening round of this seasons Ocean Thunder was extremely flat and benign for racing. With no assistance from wind or swell the athletes had to tough it out in every race rowing every stroke of the way with many close finishes. Stories and Pics by: Harvie Allison A great days racing in the men s division saw Avoca take bragging rights over the strong Bulli crew with North Cronulla right behind in third. Oars raised in tribute to the late Rick Millar The boaties at Ocean Thunder at Dee Why on Saturday paid tribute to the late Rick Millar. While the Avalon Beach great died on August 4 this year after losing his battle with cancer, it was the first opportunity for many of the rowers and sweeps from NSW and interstate who knew Rick so well to have an opportunity to say farewell to a man who was just so passionate about the sport. It was a fitting gesture by the Ocean Thunder organisers. Apart from his sweeping prowess, Rick was a great mentor with the younger kids. He was a Life Member of Avalon Beach SLSC and SLS Sydney Northern Beaches Branch and was inducted into the ASRL Hall of Fame. Rick would have been proud to know that a new women's crew from Avalon Beach, swept by Nathan Wellings, gave a very good account of themselves in their first outing in Ocean Thunder and finished fourth in the final. Two of the rowers Angle Seeto and Beck Lock both rowed under Millar, as did Wellings before he became a sweep. Rick was just a larrikin but a wonderful man, Angie said. There is no doubt this amazing mentor and larrikin will be sorely missed in the surfboat arena! 34 ssm

The rough conditions made starts difficult and there was plenty of work for the judges as several crews crossed the line together in most races. 40 Story and Photos: Harvie Allison Iron Challenge The final of the Kozii Iron Challenge was again held at picturesque Raby Bay just south of Brisbane. The young Iron kids, many trying their first race, had a great fun day with ages from U9 s through to U16 s all competing in a round robin style event where everyone got to race three times and the cumulative point-score decided winners on the day. Racing against the possibility of incoming storms the heats were run at ten minute intervals in both arenas and it certainly made the day fly by. Plenty smiles and some really close finishes with friends and families Plenty smiles and some really close finishes with friends and families cheering all produced a great fun day and there certainly were some very tired young athletes eager to get into bed that evening. 38 ssm

cheering all produced a great fun day and there certainly were some very tired young athletes eager to get into bed that evening. Now in it s third year the Kozii Challenge was expanded to two races with the opener having been held at Mooloolaba. With so much positive feedback there are plans for further expansion next season to four events including a visit to North Queensland. n 40 ssm

By Allie Britton Mercury Surf Safari 50 Years of Surf craft endurance racing has taken place in Tasmania. The Mercury Surf Safari celebrated its 50th Anniversary with the largest field in the history of the event lining up in the southern states unpredictable weather. Surf boats, surf skis, board and outrigger competitors faced the cool waters of Hobarts Derwent River and lined up to race in their respective events. Twenty interstate paddlers flew south for the event including past winners Tom Norton, Georgia Laird and fourtime Australian Olympian and medallist Dan Collins. Collins was joined by his son Jackson who took out the Elite Men s 21km Surf ski event ahead of training partner and best mate Tom Green with Tom Norton finishing in a narrow third place. With just 11 seconds separating Collins from Green and Norton, the kayak training partners all worked together sharing wash leads for the first 16 kilometres before it was free for all for the back end of the race. There wasn t much of a race plan for me, said Collins. I simply wanted a good start, to get out with the front pack and then see how the race would unfold. Racing in 7-degree air temperature, whirling winds and the freezing waters of the Derwent River the Queensland pair were not deterred. The scenery was stunning, although it was cold, we were able to see snow capping on the mountain. Green said. I can t say that as a Queenslander I have had too many opportunities to experience climates like this so it posed a bit of a challenge and added an extra thrill. The weather was no surprise for Ex- Tasmanian Georgia Laird. Originally from Burnie now relocated and training on the Gold Coast, Laird took out the 12km Ski event with a convincing lead ahead of Burnie pair Courtney Dowling and Annette Lakeland. Carlton Park s Old Gold took out the 21km Surf Boat event just three minutes ahead of Burnie s Sultans and Clifton Beach s Wyld Stallyns. In the Women s Surf Boats Clifton Beach s Krakens made history taking out their 7th title in the 12km event. Carlton Parks Mecca and Penguins Plovers filled out the minor placings respectively. The Queensland pair, Tom Green and Jackson Collins are looking forward to next year s event despite finishing the event with frozen fingers and numb toes. We are used to paddling in the heat, it was nice for a change although my toes were numb and my fingers frozen as I paddled into the finish line. said Collins. It was one of the hardest races I have done, but definitely one of the best. The pair along with event organisers and remaining competitors were thrilled with the event and are already looking forward to the 51st Annual Mercury Surf Safari. n It was one of the hardest races I have done, but definitely one of the best. ssm 41

health&training By Nick Marshall Surf Life Physio - Success at the World Lifesaving Championships While it would be easy to read the above headline and think we are going to talk about the Australian Team regaining their Lifesaving World Champions Titles. It s not at all, it s about the continued growth and success of the world Lifesaving medical teams and support staff. Prior to any competition had started at the Lifesaving World Championships, Adelaide was host to the second international Lifesaving sport science and national medical team s symposium. This is a chance for all the medical and sport science support staff of the national teams to come together to improve the services they apply to their own individual national team as well as improve the medical coverage available to all the teams at international Lifesaving competition. It might seem strange to learn that up until recently in international competition there really was no strategy in place for team-medical staff to enter the field of play/competition. In fact, as has been seen at previous competitions, quite often when an athlete is injured in international competition there is everybody from coach, doctor, physio, family, clubbies, friends and officials at the scene trying to help and aid in assistance to the injured athlete. While this is incredibly honorable it creates a less than desirable out come with confusion as to roles, who is in charge and where to go to continue care. Having personally been in this situation in previous championships it was easy to see that this was an area to improve. So, for that reason the main aspect of this last two years of planning as a group of national team medical/health providers was to establish parameters and systems as to who could enter the field of competition/play and how that single contact person for that team could be identified. It was established that all medical teams would be supplied with a green Medic bib and that this bib was required to be worn for a team medical person to attend to their teams injured during competition. Take our footy codes as an example. There are very strict rules in place as to who can enter the field of play and attend to a player. The clubs or respective leagues dictate the qualifications required to wear a particular colored vest. With each colored vest having a very clearly defined role and responsibility. Celebrating the win with our amazing Aussie Team. 42 ssm

It was this model we looked as a group to copy and so the Adelaide World Lifesaving Championship was the first major international Lifesaving event where this was implemented. But the symposium and group didn t just look to implement this change. It was also discussed that at future international lifesaving events, that the best doctors, health providers and medical facilities would be identified and marked on specific maps by the host nations national team medic and that that information would be supplied to all teams in the months prior to competition. While the competition always has emergency services in place. They are there for just that, emergencies. Not sports medicine consults, xrays, MRI s and quick health checks. Services that were very much required in this Championships with Australian Team Captain Harriet Brown having to be taken to hospital for testing after the first day of ocean competition and the German team surf competitor fracturing and dislocating his shoulder in the Ironman race. Closer to home the Australian Team has undergone immense change with respect to the medical care and highperformance sports science. In preparation for competition but also as social responsibility, the Australian Lifesaving Team has implemented a comprehensive athlete medical screening policy. This has been designed with a focus of improving the general health and education around general health so that these pillars of our organization can be leaders and role models at a state, branch and club level. Showing the importance of health checks and monitoring. Each of the athletes has undergone ECG testing of their hearts, medical screening and reviews of their medications. As well as updates of their immunizations and vaccinations as indicated. It s allowed the athletes to have access to high performance sports science health professionals in physiotherapy, psychology and dietetics. Where the focus isn t just on the immediate performance of the athlete within this team but to improve their ability to continue to race at the top long after the World Championships have finished. Another area of direct improvement for the national team is in our ability to manage potentially stressful situations with injury by becoming better prepared. The team now has a non-traveling sports doctor available to them for consults via phone, text, or video. We also have all athlete complete a hospital pre-admission form so that should an athlete need to be immediately raced to hospital and surgery we have all the up to date available information at our finger tips, rather than trying to access this information from a doctor back where they live. While in Adelaide this was not a problem, moving forward to 2020 and 2022 where the World Championships are in Italy and Morocco it is incredibly important to be armed with as much health information as possible. So, in the period since we were last world champions we have come a long way. But there are still so many areas where as a group, a sport and an organization, we can continue to progress and grow. We are certainly looking in to further concussion and cognition testing to better align with other sports as well as areas of blood chemistry where changes in health can be more easily identified. So while it s great to celebrate the successes it s important to not lose sight that sometimes success is a poor teacher and we can always look to be better. n Australian Captain and World Champ, our own Kate Czerny relied on Nick to get her on the line. It might seem strange to learn that up until recently in international competition there really was no strategy in place for team-medical staff to enter the field of play/competition. 46 nutrition By Bonnie Hancock Accredited Practising Dietitian Dietitians Top Christmas Gift Ideas Stuck for ideas on how to spread the love this festive season and treat those on your Christmas list with a gift or two? Healthy Ways to Spread the Christmas Cheer: Fruit platters, baskets or bowls are a fantastic way to enjoy the beautiful fresh seasonal fruit on offer, and are a very popular plate to bring along to a social occasion. Rather than hitting the store to buy biscuits, you could bake some biscuits at home and put them into jars with a personal label. If biscuits aren t your style, you could make other home-made snacks like mini quiches or muffins. Go for recipes with healthier ingredients that are easy to make. Homemade pickles, vinegar, salad dressings or infused extra virgin olive oil in cute little jars make great and useful presents for those hard to buy for! You could also make small bags of heathy snacks, such as roasted chickpeas with honey, rosemary and sea salt. Alternatively, bottles of honey-roasted macadamias or homemade nut and cinnamon muesli as sweet alternatives which will be very popular. You can pop these in bottles, tie with twine and label in fancy handwriting. Homemade gifts are always a hit! If you have your own veggie garden, you could put together bunches of homegrown herbs such as rosemary, parsley or basil, or perhaps trays of vegetables you may have in excess. Vouchers to cooking workshops for adults or kids are a wonderful present and provides an enjoyable and educational experience, teaching the art of home cooking using real ingredients. Beautiful Fruit for a healthy Xmas Likewise, foodie walking tours are a great way to explore a new or familiar environment in a new way, sampling local delicacies. A selection of herbal teas and a beautiful antique-style teapot is a great gift for young and old. If you want to create something special and lasting, put together a small recipe book for family and friends, with breakfast, lunch and dinner ideas. Base your recipes on seasonal produce, which is both cheap and economical. You could alternatively make up calendars which include both recipes and photography. If you are time poor, healthy cookbooks or cooking equipment such as a non-stick frying pan make great and useful gifts which will continue to be used and loved. Get outdoors! A soccer ball or frisbee can provide hours of fun in the sun with family or friends. If you re heading to the beach, a boogie board or inflatable toy make a top Chrissy present and will get everyone outdoors and away from the screen. Have a safe and happy Christmas! See you on the beach. n Vouchers to cooking workshops for adults or kids are a wonderful present and provides an enjoyable and educational experience, teaching the art of home cooking using real ingredients Lychees are ready just in time for Xmas Bonnie Hancock Accredited Practising Dietitian 44 ssm
