3 ABOUT SURFING AUSTRALIA 01 Surfing Australia is a not-for-profit incorporated National Sporting Organisation that was formed in 1963 to establish, guide and promote the development of surfing in Australia. Surfing Australia is the representative body on the International Surfing Association (ISA) of which there are 56 member countries and is recognised by the Australian Sports Commission, the Australian Olympic Committee and is a member of the Water Safety Council of Australia. Surfing underpins an important part of the Australian coastal fabric. 4 CEO REPORT SURFING AUSTRALIA has achieved significant sport development outcomes in the past year. This was achieved through a lot of hard work and enthusiasm by a now established and dedicated staff that is supported and overseen by a dynamic Board of Directors. We settled in well to our new headquarters at Coolangatta and we have established a very robust successful business model that is structured well to create outstanding sport development outcomes in coming years. The past year was certainly an investment in our future as far as the financial results. With a planned deficit we were able to significantly improve our services to stakeholders through a far broader communications platform including the development and implementation of a new website, the continued delivery and growth of our own magazine, Surfing Australia News, along with vastly improved resources for community sport areas of surf schools and clubs. The most exciting and progressive news of the year was the successful application to the Australian Government for $2 million to build a new purpose built High Performance training facility at Casuarina Beach, Northern New South Wales. This funding will allow Surfing Australia to build the world s first dedicated training facility to ensure Australian surfers have the absolute best possible training environment to succeed on the international stage. We sincerely thank the Australian Government for their generous support of this project and most importantly for recognising surfing as an important healthy whole of life sport in Australia. To compliment the brand new High Performance Centre, Surfing Australia were also assessed by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) and allocated the elevated status in Australian sport as a priority sport. This priority sport status provides increased access to the Australian Institute of Sport services to improve the sports science and athlete and coaching development for our sport. We were also successful in new funding for high performance training that will see the employment of a new National Coaching Director along with a multitude of new programs to support the development of Australian athletes into the future. We thank the Australian Sports Commission for the increased level of support to Surfing Australia and for their vision for Australian sport and its significance in the Australian way of life. Australian surfers continued to perform admirably at all levels over the past year including at the highest level in our Men and Women 2009 ASP World Champions, Mick Fanning and Stephanie Gilmore. We also successfully won a gold medal at the ISA Juniors and Masters, and claimed a silver medal at the ISA Opens in Certainly 2009/2010 was an outstanding year for international standard results and a big congratulations must go to all of our champion athletes. Our commercialisation program to become a more sustainable sporting organisation resulted in the successful introduction of two new national sponsorship partners in Suncorp Bank and VB Beer. Both are major iconic national brands and now great support sponsors of Surfing Australia. We also continued our partnerships with Wahu, Coastalwatch and TravelSIM. Thanks must go to the surfing industry that continues to support surfing at all levels throughout Australia. We are now one year into a three year strategic plan and travelling extremely well with strong results in all key business units. This has been made possible through the support of our stakeholders and the commitment of our dedicated staff and board. I would like to thank these key people and stakeholders for their great support throughout the past year. Through the success of the past year, Surfing Australia is positioned extremely well to grow and importantly maximise the development of surfing throughout Australia. 5 CHAIRMAN S REPORT WELCOME TO THE SURFING AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2009/ The last financial year has been a strong first step in our new three year plan. As noted in last year s Annual Report, Andrew Stark was appointed CEO just prior to the beginning of the 09/10 financial year. Initially, all our resources were concentrated on building a new, professional, management team for Surfing Australia. I am happy to report that all the staff retained, and all the new staff recruited, have performed admirably. Their passion and commitment have enabled us to achieve far more in this first year than I personally thought possible. Our second priority was to bring all our intellectual property resources, and administration of those resources, up to date. We knew (before budgeting for 09/10) that the investment in staff and resources would require us to run a deficit budget. Fortunately, our reserves were sufficient to allow for that strategy, and, as you will see in the audited financial results, the Surfing Australia bottom line was almost exactly on budget. This is an investment in the future, and was necessary to create the platform to provide for new sustainable revenue streams. All our strategic goals were met accordingly. During the 09/10 year, we were very pleased to welcome Suncorp as a new National Sponsor. Together with our existing primary sponsors; Coastalwatch, Wahu, TravelSIM, Business GC and Connecting Southern Gold Coast, they have helped us bring new programs into the sport of surfing. In post 09/10 news, we are also very proud to announce Victoria Bitter as a major National Sponsor across all States (except South Australia, and Queensland, where previous contractual arrangements existed). The major financial impact of 09/10, however, won t be seen until future years. The Federal Government, both of itself, and via the Ministry of Sport through the Australian Sports Commission, have increased their support of the sport of surfing significantly. Surfing Australia made the decision to place the head administrative office in Coolangatta, and develop Casuarina into a purpose built High Performance facility. The support of the Federal Labor Government has turned that dream into a reality. In addition, the Australian Sports Commission has announced a more than doubling of the existing High Performance annual funding for surfing. That support is greatly appreciated, and Surfing Australia intends to ensure Australia s premier position in the sport for many years to come. To that end, congratulations are due to our teams competing at the ISA World Titles at Junior, Open and Master levels. As we have virtually come to expect, Australia performed to its usual elite level with the following results; 1st Juniors (2010 ISA World Junior Surfing Championship), 1st Masters (2010 ISA World Master Surfing Championship) and 2nd Opens (ISA Open World Surfing Games). A fantastic effort by the Australian boys and girls, men and women, surfing for their country. In closing, I would also like to thank all those volunteers, coaches, boardrider clubs, judges and officials that work together to make the sport of surfing great in Australia. I would also like to particularly thank the State organisations; the members of Surfing Australia. 6 MESSAGE FROM THE AUSTRALIAN SPORTS COMMISSION It is an honour to serve as the new Chair of the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) Board at this challenging and exciting period for our national sporting system. The ASC and national sporting organisations (NSOs) have long spoken of a shared ambition to strengthen relationships between all system partners involved in Australian sport. Aligned with this ambition, the Australian Government is now encouraging a whole-of-sport reform agenda, aimed at establishing a more collaborative, efficient and integrated sports system. Through new direction for sport Australian Sport: the Pathway to Success, the ASC will work closely with sport to achieve its main objectives; boost sports participation and strengthen sporting pathways while striving for international success. The reform agenda seeks for the ASC to assist to provide stability and support for all sporting organisations in their pursuit of a shared, common purpose; creating a better sporting pathway for all Australians, from the grassroots up. The ASC will implement the new direction, and this includes collaboration with all NSOs to allocate a record amount of new sports funding committing an extra $195 million over the next four years. This funding is in addition to the current ongoing baseline funding for NSOs. Also, the ASC will assist sporting organisations with access to coaching and officiating programs, governance support, planning and education opportunities and assistance with becoming more inclusive particularly in the areas of Indigenous sport, sport for people with a disability, sport for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and women s sport development programs. This is the first time key sport partners, such as state and territory institutes and academies of sport and state and territory departments of sport and recreation, have collaborated on a Commonwealth funding decision in the interests of Australia s sporting future. This is an exciting time for all of us involved in Australian sport. With significant new funding from the Australian Government, sports will be better positioned than ever before to lead the drive for higher participation levels and strong success on the sporting field by promoting the unique nature of their sport, creating a legacy and a lasting impression for communities across the country. The ASC will continue to work with all NSOs, the state and territory institutes and academies of sport and state and territory departments of sport and recreation, reinvigorating access to, and participation in, sport across the community and driving Australia s continued sporting success. 7 PARTNERS Australian Water Safety Council Surfing Australia is a member of the Australian Channel 9 With the assistance of Channel 9, Surfing ASC Surfing Australia s principal partner, the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) continues to support surfing with a major focus on elite athlete development and programming. The ASC recognises Surfing Australia as the peak body or National Sporting Organisation (NSO) for the sport of surfing. They support our role in the development of international surfing programs and events as well as domestic programs that offer benefits to the wider community. ISA The International Surfing Association (ISA) is recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the World Governing Authority for Surfing and all Surfriding activities, including Shortboard, Longboard, Bodyboard, Kneeboard, Skimboard, Tow In and Stand Up Paddle surfing. It was originally founded as the International Surfing Federation in 1964 and has been running World Championships since 1964 and the junior World Championships since ASP The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) is the peak body for professional surfing. The ASP runs the Men s and Women s Professional Championships along with the World Junior Professional Championship, the World Professional Masters Championships and the World Professional Longboard Championships for both men and women. Surfing Australia works with the ASP to develop new events and promote established events in its capacity as the manager of the ASP Australasia region. IOC The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognises Surfing Australia as the peak body for the sport in Australia. Water Safety Council, which is responsible for the development and management of the National Water Safety Plan. Suncorp Surfing Australia and Suncorp have launched a new partnership aimed at spreading the SunWise message nationally, specifically targeting Australian surfers and beachgoers. Suncorp SunWise shade tents will be seen at surfing events throughout Australia while Suncorp staff volunteers will also attend each event to distribute free sunscreen to spectators and tips for being SunWise. VB VB and Surfing Australia have teamed up to bring you the VB Boardriders Club. It s aimed at taking the support of Australia s grass root surfing community to the next level via offering Surfing Australia affiliated boardriders clubs the opportunity to join the exclusive VB Boardriders Club. Australia s 2.5 million recreational surfers and a rare breed of hard core watermen will also be toasting the partnership between Surfing Australia and VB, with the nation s best cold beer announcing the launch of the VB Slab of the Week program. Coastalwatch Since its inception in 1998, Coastalwatch has been providing live vision, daily surf reports and forecasts, along with extensive historical swell referencing and engaging editorial; becoming the most comprehensive coastal reference site in Australia. Coastalwatch is a philanthropic community focused commercial organisation that supports community groups and charities. Casuarina Beach Our relationship with Casuarina Beach continues to grow with the Surfing Australia High Performance Centre firmly positioned in this fantastic facility. This location is one of the world s most sought after high performance training locations and is the training facility that will take Australian surfers to new heights in international success. Australia went to air with its first ever free-toair national television commercial to promote the benefits of Learn 2 Surf. The 30 second Community Service Announcement (CSA) aired across Australia. Business GC & Gold Coast City Council Business Gold Coast (Business GC) is the Gold Coast City Council s (GCCC) economic development arm and facilitates growth of key industries through its 2020 Economic Development Strategy. Business GC contributed valuable funding for the relocation of the Surfing Australia headquarters to Coolangatta on the Gold Coast along with supporting the annual Australian Surfing Awards incorporating the Hall of Fame. Connecting Southern Gold Coast Connecting Southern Gold Coast (CSGC) was created by the GCCC to foster economic growth and development in the Southern Gold Coast region. Along with Business GC, the CSGC provided funding for the move of Surfing Australia s H.Q. to Coolangatta (southern end of the Gold Coast) as well as the annual Australian Surfing Awards. TravelSIM TravelSIM, the mobile phone service for international travellers, largely supports Surfing Australia through naming rights of the highly successful TravelSIM Team Australia. Southern Cross University Our partnership with Southern Cross University continues to deliver opportunities through research and education. The diploma of Sports Management (Surfing Studies) presented through the Tweed Heads Campus has been developed in conjunction with Surfing Australia and provides the knowledge and skills required of employees and managers in the global surf industry. 05

8 Layne Beachley Norm Innis Chairman Don O Rorke SURFING AUSTRALIA BOARD MEMBERS Norm Innis - Chairman NORM INNIS, resides on the Sunshine Coast (QLD) and has been a member of Surfing Australia s board since He has a Bachelor s degree in Commerce, and has extensive experience in the surfing industry. Norm worked with Quiksilver from , holding positions as Managing Director of both Australia and Asia/Pacific, and as General Manager for Quiksilver International. Norm has been involved in the administration of surfing as a consultant and as the acting chairman of the Association of Surfing Professionals (1999 and 2000). In recent years Norm has been involved with the Noosa Malibu Club and the Noosa Surfing Festival. Norm runs his own investment company, and also maintains his own Charitable Foundation that supports a wide variety of philanthropic pursuits in surfing. Layne Beachley LAYNE BEACHLEY is the most recognised surfer in Australia. As a new member of the Surfing Australia board in 2010 she brings an undisputed level of credibility as both a competitive surfer and a professional business woman. With 7 ASP World Titles and a total of 29 tour victories her competitive record is unmatched. She has also given so much back to the sport of surfing through her public profile, 15 years of active service on the ASP board and staging the richest ASP Women s World Tour event for 5 consecutive years. Outside of surfing through her own charity the Aim for the Stars Foundation, girls across Australia have received $400,000 in financial grants to assist them with pursuing their dreams and achieving their goals. Layne is also an ambassador for The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Day Of Difference Foundation, Planet Ark and Tourism NSW. Don O Rorke DON O RORKE has been a member of the Surfing Australia board since Don has a Business degree, and has been involved in property development and funds management for the past 30 years. Don is the Managing Director of Consolidated Properties, a company he played a major role in establishing in In 2007, Don expanded his private business operations to include hotel, resort and pub ownership and management. These services are provided through Consolidated Properties hotel division, the Pub Group. With business partners, Don is also part owner of Consolidated Properties affiliated businesses L2 Capital, Casuarina Beach (the home of Surfing Australia s HPC), Links Hope Island and Domain Resorts and Residences. He is also a former director of listed national property group Trinity, in which he remains a major shareholder; and a past president of the property council of Australia s Queensland division, a former director of Brisbane Marketing and Wesley Research Institute.

9 Sean Doherty David Cross Matt Finnis Mal Gregson 07 David Cross DAVID CROSS resides in Queensland, and has been on Surfing Australia s board since He has extensive experience in Sport Management, Sport Products and Sport Education and has held various senior roles in these sectors. David was CEO for BASE, and more recently Firewire, both surfboard manufacturing companies based on the Gold Coast. David was a lecturer in post-graduate studies in Sport Management, as well as CEO of Australian University Sport. He has held a number of voluntary board positions over the years including the Industry Advisors Forum to Southern Cross University in Surfing Studies. Mal Gregson MAL GREGSON lives and surfs at Phillip Island, Victoria. He is a life member of Phillip Island Boardriders Club, and Surfing Victoria, and has been a Surfing Australia board member since Mal has been an avid surfer since the late sixties and has won club, state and national titles. He has been the contest director of the Rip Curl Pro, the World Grommet Titles, the Australian Grommet Titles and a host of ASP related events. Mal helped pioneer the computer scoring system in Australasia and has been manager/coach of the Australian Team in Durban and Ecuador at the World Surfing Games. Matt Finnis MATT FINNIS is the Chief Executive Officer of the AFL Players Association (AFLPA). The AFLPA represents the collective interests of AFL players across a broad range of industrial, commercial and policy related matters. Immediately prior to joining the AFLPA, Matt worked in the sports business group at Lander & Rogers Lawyers advising sporting organisations, businesses, athletes and government agencies in relation to a range of legal matters. In addition to being a board member of Surfing Australia, Matt also serves as a director of HeartKids Australia, a charity supporting children born with congenital heart disease. Sean Doherty SEAN DOHERTY lives in Jan Juc and can be regularly found in the line-up at Bells Beach or Winkipop. After graduating from Newcastle University with a Business degree he took a job working at Tracks surfing magazine. After 10 years at the magazine he has become its longest serving and most successful editor. During his tenure at Emap, Tracks publisher, he won three consecutive Writer of the Year awards as well as an Editor of the Year award. His writing has been published widely in magazines across the world, and has written many books. His debut book, the biography of surfing legend Michael Peterson, became a national bestseller and the basis for an upcoming feature film. He has commentated 30 World Tour events, and works today as a freelance writer and editorial consultant. He has been a board member of Surfing Australia since 2004.

10 SURFING AUSTRALIA STAFF MEMBERS Andrew Stark - CEO Andrew Stark is the Chief Executive Officer of Surfing Australia and in this role is also the Chief Executive of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Australasia. Andrew has been in this role since March 2009 and accepted the position after 9 years at Surfing Queensland as their CEO. Andrew has a Bachelor of Business Management degree from the Queensland University of Technology and has over 10 years experience in sport management and the surfing industry. Prior to becoming involved in the sporting industry Andrew worked in the advertising and marketing industry. Andrew was a board member for the Sport Federation of Queensland for 5 years ( ) and was a board member of the Gold Coast Sport Business Task Force for 4 years ( ). Andrew has extensive experience in strategic sport development programming and has internationally recognised knowledge and experience in the management of multi-million dollar budget events. Andrew has been involved in the staging of over 200 events throughout 8 countries over the past 10 years. Andrew has lectured at Bond University in the business faculty in event management and sponsorship acquisition and servicing. He has also been a guest speaker at various sport business seminars including the Australia New Zealand Sports Law Association Annual Conference and the Sport Business World Summit. Andrew was awarded the Queensland Sport Administrator of the Year at the 2004 Queensland Sport Awards and was also awarded an Australian Surfing Hall of Fame award for excellence in Administration in Andrew is a passionate and experienced surfer and is determined to take surfing to the mainstream in Australia. Peter Lonergan - Financial Controller Peter has held various managerial positions in the hospitality industry before branching into accounting. His experience in this field includes the financial management of a busy wholesale company importing crystals, as well as his role as Financial Services Manager of a Human Resource group specialising in finding and maintaining employment for people with disabilities. He has worked at Surfing Australia for the past 2 years and his qualifications include a Diploma of Business Management, Associate Diploma in Business Management (Accounting) and a Bachelor of Building (Management). He was also awarded Accounting Student of the Year (Second Place in NSW) and is an Associate Member of NIA. Steve Robertson - Media Manager A state and national competitor through the 1980 s, Steve began his sport administration career in 1990 as President of Surfing Victoria. In 1993 he took over as CEO of Surfing Victoria. For ten years Steve contest and event directed the world s two biggest surfing contests Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach and the Billabong Pro in Tahiti. In 2000 he was awarded Victoria s Sports Administrator of the year, recognised by Sport and Recreation Victoria and in the same year accepted the Victoria Sport Award Major Event of the Year; for the Bells Easter Rip Curl Pro event. In the last decade media has become Steve s major role, specialising and pioneering digital still photography utilising exceptional national and international sport database systems along with precise copy writing skills. Steve maintains his passion for surfing from entry to highest level professionals, nurtures a family dedicated to the sport and keeps himself actively involved in the water by taking to the latest discipline in the sport, stand up paddle boarding. Chris Symington - Sport Development Manager Chris has over 15 years experience in sport as both a volunteer and administrator. Initially a volunteer working within the Surf Life Saving movement in Victoria, Chris moved into the professional side of the sport in For the next three years he attended Deakin University part time whilst working full time to gain his Masters Degree in Sports Management. After almost 5 years with Life Saving Victoria as the Manager of Aquatic Sports, he took on the challenge of starting his own business called Trakstart which delivered a variety of athletic programs to the education sector. The core business being the delivery of active after school programs for primary aged children. It was through this business that key partnerships were formed with Athletics Victoria and Athletics Australia who identified the value of these products for the development of their sport. After 3 years of growing the business, Chris decided to move on from Trakstart and in June of 2009 joined the team at Surfing Australia. Jake White - Events & Communications Manager In his role as Events and Communications Manager, Jake delivers events nationally and internationally, services key sponsors and manages the key communications tools for Surfing Australia. Having worked as Media Manager for Surfing Queensland for over 5 years before starting at Surfing Australia, Jake is an accomplished photo journalist with major newspapers and websites throughout Australia having published his outstanding action surf photos extensively. He has been actively involved in surfing events across all levels including the annual Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast. While media has been Jake s major focus in recent years, his event and sponsorship organisational skills have extensively developed through eclectic duties within Surfing Australia and his tertiary education includes a Sport Major Leisure Management Degree (Griffith University).

11 Dane Jordan - ASP Australasia Tour Manager Dane has been involved in competitive surfing for the past 18 years and worked in surfing administration for the past nine. An accomplished competitor, he began his career with Surfing Queensland as their Operations Manager whilst completing his second tertiary degree, a Bachelor of Business (Sports Management) at Griffith University and he also holds a Bachelor of Information Technology (Information Management) from the Queensland University of Technology. After nearly 3 years with Surfing Queensland, Dane accepted a position with Surfing Australia in a dual role as the Surfing Australia Events Manager/ASP Australia Operations Manager which he held for 4 ½ years before being promoted into his current position as ASP Australasia Tour Manager. Dane has directly managed and been involved in the management of well over a hundred events from the Quiksilver Pro Snapper Rocks, part of the ASP World Title race, to ASP Star events including the SriLankan Airlines Pro in the Maldives and Sri Lanka, to Pro Junior events and local grass roots events. He also has a strong passion for the development side of the sport and is the current president of the Kingscliff Boardriders Club. He can still be seen to don a competition rash vest from time to time and is passionate about helping to lead the sport of surfing into the future. Kristin Brummell - Office Manager Kristin is the newest member of Surfing Australia, and brings with her experience in the area of sports administration and event management. Kristin completed a Bachelor of Human Movement Science (Majoring in Sports Management) at Southern Cross University. After graduating in 2007, Kristin worked as a Golf Event Coordinator at RACV Royal Pines Resort, where she was responsible for coordinating and managing a wide spectrum of golf and sporting events, differing in size, scale, and profile, including corporate golf days, professional golf tournaments and the ANZ Ladies Masters, which is the richest ladies golf tournament in Australia. Holly Robertson - Accounts Assistant Holly has been employed within the surfing industry for the past six years. She started her career with ASP International in 2004 as Receptionist and was responsible for assisting in the organisation of the ASP World Championship Crowning for three consecutive years. In 2006, she commenced work with Surfing Australia as the Administration Manager for ASP Australasia and has also served in many roles since, including Receptionist, Office Manager as well as PA to the CEO. Holly will briefly be moving on from Surfing Australia to serve her time as a mother to her first child but will be returning in 2011 as Accounts Assistant. Cindy May - ASP Australasia Administration Manager In 2006, Cindy completed the Diploma of Sports Management Surfing Studies at Southern Cross University, Tweed Heads. Her surf industry career started with an internship with Surfing Queensland, and shortly after she secured a full time position for 2 years as Receptionist with Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) International. Cindy then travelled to surf Hawaii, California and Mexico before returning to Australia to commence work as Personal Assistant to Wayne Rabbit Bartholomew. In March 2010, Cindy returned to the ASP as Administration Manager for ASP Australasia. James Eggington - High Performance Centre Manager Since entering the workforce in 2004 to complete a university internship in sports administration James has worked at Surfing Australia in events, coaching accreditations, coach education and currently in the role as High Performance Centre Manager implementing development programs and managing the Australian surfing team to two gold medals. At Southern Cross University he completed a Bachelor of Sport and Tourism Management from (Major studies: Sports Management, Sports Marketing and Promotions, Computer Studies and Athlete management) and recently completed the ASC Sports Education and Learning course in which he gained his Level 3 Sports Manager accreditation. Beau Brenchley - Sport Development Officer Beau has worked in a variety of different areas of the surfing industry over a fourteen year period. This includes retail, wholesale and manufacturing. From 2006 to 2008, he worked for Surfing Queensland and his passion for the events industry was ignited. During that period, he worked at every event on the Surfing Queensland annual calendar. Beau took up the position of Sport Development Officer at Surfing Australia in November Since then, Beau has covered events across Australia and overseas in his role as Computer Operator at ASP sanctioned events. He is also involved with quality control audits of surf schools, organising events, media and coaching accreditations. Beau assists The Sport Development Manager, Events and Communications Manager and Media Manager in all aspects of their roles. From an academic point of view, he has a Diploma in Business Management (Gold Coast Institute of Tafe). 09

12 SURFING AUSTRALIA SURF SCHOOLS The surf school industry is one of the fastest growing industries on the Australian coastline, as the general community are able to experience the joy of surfing in a safe and controlled environment. The 85 Surfing Australia licensed surf schools operating nationwide delivered in excess of 350,000 individual lessons last year, to both local and international visitors. In December 2009, Surfing Australia went to air with its first ever free-to-air national television commercial to promote the benefits of Learn to Surf. The 30 second Community Service Announcement (CSA) aired across Australia through the Nine Network. Surfing Australia were able to secure the services of surfing legends Layne Beachley and Mark Occhilupo to appear in the commercial, while the Nine Network added even more star power by employing the services of Getaway host Natalie Gruzlewski. The commercial also coincided with the launch of Surfing Australia s new website which is incorporated into the commercial. By launching this national campaign in conjunction with the new website, Surfing Australia Surf Schools received unprecedented exposure. At the end of 2009, Surfing Australia developed and distributed a brand new Surf School Operations Manual. The manual sets the standard in the Learn to Surf industry and provides member surf schools with the appropriate guidelines for their operations. It can also be used by surf schools when tendering to council or dealing with other key stakeholders like schools, potential sponsors and other regulatory bodies. Using the new Surf School Operations Manual as the Surfing Australia standard we have also implemented our surf school quality assurance program which was promised as part of our surf schools restructure. By personally visiting every member surf school in Australia, Surfing Australia will see firsthand whether each surf school is operating to the minimum standards. But more than that it gives us the opportunity to have a face to face discussion with all surf schools about any issues and concerns that may be facing their business and what the state branches and Surfing Australia can do to continue to support them. An audit template along with a general questionnaire has been designed to assist in getting the most out of these visits with extensive post visit reporting and feedback being a major part of the program. Surfing Australia surf schools again participated in the biggest surf event in the world - The Rip Curl Girls Go Surfing Day. Held on the 28th and 29th of November 2009, over 2,500 girls hit the beaches Australia wide. The promotion not only supports the surf school network but is also a great tool to increase female participation in surfing. The Learn to Surf Australia publication which was created this year will be released officially in October Along with other major marketing activities we have undertaken in the last year (in particular, the Channel 9 advertisement) this publication will be an exercise in branding, promotion and importantly owning the Learn to Surf market.

13 011 BOARDRIDER CLUBS 201 CLUBS 21,000 CLUB MEMBERS 2000 CLUB ROUNDS CLUB SURFING IS THE GRASS ROOTS OF AUSTRALIAN SURFING. The clubs are an absolute fundamental part of the sport development pathway. Boardriding clubs are where our junior surfers begin their pathway to becoming a world champion. Club competitions teach the skills required to pursue a competitive career and introduce surfers to the support and friendship offered by club membership. The new Boardriders Club Manual has been developed this year and will be a detailed and professional resource that will assist clubs in their day to day operations. The manual, which has been distributed to all Surfing Australia clubs, is over 100 pages and contains a wealth of information including a comprehensive risk management guide with easy to use templates. Surfing Australia has also teamed up with VB to develop the VB Boardriders Club. It s aimed at taking the support of Australia s grass root surfing community to the next level via offering Surfing Australia affiliated clubs the opportunity to join the exclusive VB Boardriders Club and enjoy some great benefits. The Australian boardriding club culture is envied globally and the sport development outcomes from our incredibly strong club structure are evident on the global stage. Club surfing will be an absolute focus in years to come for Surfing Australia as we continue to strive for domination at the highest level of our sport and continue to drive participation and enjoyment levels in our sport.

14 EDUCATION Surfing Australia, in association with its state branches, presents many coaching and judging courses each year. Currently, there are over 1,600 accredited coaches and over 500 accredited judges registered. Surfing Australia continues to develop its coaching and judging programs to satisfy the needs of the surfing community. Our education programs are constantly being assessed to ensure we are providing a clear development pathway for all participants, to create a stronger surfing industry. This can be demonstrated by the highly successful Green Room Conference which was conducted on Wednesday 24th Feb, This professional development event set about providing a cutting edge educational experience for coaches, athletes, team managers and surfing enthusiasts. The conference was the first of its kind for surfing we believe anywhere in the world and demonstrated the level of maturity the sport has achieved. The feedback for the conference was overwhelmingly positive and we are looking to expand this concept in years to come. The education department of Surfing Australia will see significant developments in the next two years with the implementation of a new Registered Training Organisation (RTO). This development will allow Surfing Australia to be at the absolute cutting edge of surf education throughout Australia. Registration will be completed by the end of 2010 with nationally recognised qualifications being delivered by mid The new Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Specialist Module was released in April The module is designed to be utilised as an extension of the current Level 1 & Level 2 Surf Coaching Courses, up skilling accredited coaches by demonstrating the competencies required to effectively teach the beginner skills of SUP. The International Judging and Officiating course continues to be developed and delivered through the state branches and internationally. A school based judging course has been piloted in 2010 to assist schools who see surfing as an important part of their physical education curriculum. Surfing Australia continues to work with the International Surfing Association (ISA) with our coaching programs being utilised in 30 countries and our judging programs being utilised in 15 countries. A new 5 year agreement to consolidate this relationship was signed in July ensuring that Australia is recognised as the world leaders in Surf Education.

15 COMMUNICATIONS Website Surfing Australia launched a dynamic and user-friendly website in December 2009 that has transformed the way the national surfing community benefits from the NSO and its resources. continues to steam ahead with approximately 270,000 unique views for the period 1st December, 2009 to 1st October, 2010, with a month high of 30,000 unique views in March. Daily content uploads including but not limited to news, images, banner ads, videos and social networking integration (Youtube, Facebook and Twitter) has increased web-based traffic to the Surfing Australia website. Magazine Surfing Australia has rolled out three editions of the Surfing Australia News. The magazine, which has been expanded to 42-pages, is a perfect tool for providing stakeholders and the surfing community with up-to-date information on surfing in Australia and the Australasian region. The 4th edition of the highly successful Surfing Australia News is scheduled to be distributed in early November. 013 Media Surfing Australia s media centre continues to service many events in the Australasian region, from the highest level (ASP) through to state and regional events. Surfing Australia, as well as each state branch, now operates on a digital photo journalist media model. This formula has proven so successful that Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia all now have media personnel who are media savvy and have invested in the optimal camera hardware. These state branch media personnel have been tutored by Surfing Australia and there is a consistent process of delivering quality media in place throughout Australia. The media model Surfing Australia has in place is the reason many national and state event circuits and stand-alone events are viable. The system almost guarantees significant mainstream coverage for sponsors and ensures they are achieving positive return on investment. A recent database and media platform has been built ensuring quality presentation of our press releases and accompanying photos. The database is maintained to include all sport journalists with an interest in surfing throughout all major cities and extensively through the coastal surfing regions right around Australia. While photojournalism forms the base of the media structure, media staff at Surfing Australia also have the knowledge and contacts to activate high-level national television news feeds and web highlight clips, which are essential media tools for events.

16 SURFING AUSTRALIA HIGH PERFORMANCE CENTRE (HPC) The HPC has continued with a commitment to developing surfer excellence, offering participants access to the world s best fully accredited coaches, a prime surfing location and a wide range of cutting edge programs. HPC coaches have been working directly with surfers of all ability levels including emerging junior athletes right through to professional surfers on the ASP World Tour has been a very successful year for the HPC, primarily through the introduction of the pro surfer branded camps, which have been hosted by Australia s top surfers including Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning, Julian Wilson, Owen Wright, Sally Fitzgibbons, Harley Ingleby, Adrian Buchan and Stephanie Gilmore. These professional surfers give back to surfing by mentoring and training the next generation of Australian surfers. Participants go surfing and hang out with their surfing idol as they learn about the life of a professional surfer as well as receiving an amazing product pack from the respective surfers sponsors. Another high point for the HPC has been the Federal Government s pledge of $2 million for a dedicated surf training facility on Casuarina Beach. Once completed, the HPC will boast worldclass education facilities, training rooms, treatment and conditioning rooms as well as administration offices. This will combine with the skilled coaches and programs already on offer. The HPC is in a great position moving forward and is dedicated to supporting elite level success while developing emerging talent.

17 015 SURFER ELITE PROGRAM The Surfing Australia HPC in conjunction with the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) offer 32 scholarships to Australia s best emerging surfers to aid their transition from competition surfers to professional athletes. Junior surfers are selected by their state branch to take part in two, week-long development camps held at the HPC, with male and female athletes attending the respective Mark Richards and Layne Beachley camps. In 2010, the camps were run in June, with the dates strategically placed before key junior surfing competitions. Each camp was a true success with participants getting the once in a lifetime opportunity to surf and hang out with Mark Richards and Layne Beachley. The former World Champion surfers were able to pass down valuable knowledge to the next generation of Australian surfers. In October and November, the longboard and bodyboard camps will be run for a further 20 of Australia s future surfing stars. At the end of each SEP camp, a Most Promising award is presented to one athlete. 18 HIGH PERFORMANCE TRAINING FACILITY AUSTRALIA IS SET TO MAINTAIN ITS TAG AS THE WORLD S PREMIER SURFING NATION, WITH PLANS FOR A STATE-OF-THE-ART HIGH PERFORMANCE TRAINING FACILITY BEING UNVEILED. During a visit to Casuarina Beach in late July for the official media launch, Minister for Sport Kate Ellis and Member for Richmond Justine Elliot announced $2 million in funding to be allocated to Surfing Australia for the centre. Champion surfers including seventime ASP Women s World Champion Layne Beachley, 2009 ASP Men s World Title runner-up Joel Parkinson, 1999 Men s World Champion Mark Occy Occhilupo, 2005 ASP Women s World Champion Chelsea Hedges and 1978 ASP Men s World Champion Wayne Rabbit Bartholomew were on hand at the launch and welcomed the funding. The new centre will be built on gifted land from Consolidated Properties Group and will boast world-class education facilities, administration offices as well as treatment and strength and conditioning rooms. It means elite surfers and coaches will have access to specialist programs as well as cutting edge sports science and sports medicine services. The facility will be based on the wave rich northern NSW coastline. The location was chosen as part of a strategic decision because it is just 15 minutes south of the world class Gold Coast point breaks but enough distance away to allow training and coaching in uncrowded waves. Building is projected to start midway through 2011 and be completed by January 2012.

20 TRAVELSIM TEAM AUSTRALIA JUNIORS After an intensive selection and training process at the Surfing Australian HPC, twelve proud Australian athletes made the journey to Piha, New Zealand for the 2010 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships. In great waves, the Australian s were simply too strong and continued their unprecedented dominance of the junior surfing scene with a fifth consecutive teams title. Individual titles to Port Macquarie s Matt Banting and Lennox Head s Tyler Wright combined with a second place from Currarong s Jordi Watson and a win in the Aloha Cup Tag Team capped off another amazing year for Australian junior surfing. 21 TRAVELSIM TEAM AUSTRALIA OPENS & MASTERS MASTERS Australia re-instated its superiority in world master s surfing by winning the ISA World Masters Championships in Panama. Congratulations to Rob Baldwin, who created a winning platform for TravelSIM Team Australia with an individual gold medal in the Kahuna s final, with backup from Glen Pringle (Cronulla) and Brett Bannister (Narrabeen), who both claimed respective silver medals. The title didn t come with ease with Australia facing some stiff opposition from reigning champions South Africa, coming down to the wire with only 300 points separating the two teams. 23 SPONSORSHIP 021 SPONSORSHIP AND ITS SUCCESSFUL ACTIVATION IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY INSTRUMENTAL TO THE SUCCESS OF SURFING AUSTRALIA. In late 2009, Surfing Australia appointed International Quarterback (IQ) to provide Sponsorship Strategy and Sales services, bolstering the new national administrative team dedicated to improving the professionalism, commercialisation and participation in the sport of surfing in Australia. A first for Surfing Australia, the agency was selected based on their knowledge of the industry, extensive contacts and expertise in sponsorship strategy and structure. Under the new commercial structure, Surfing Australia s existing and future partners have access to a broader range of opportunities from local community surf schools and surf club events through to elite level events. As of the 1st November 2010, Surfing Australia s corporate sponsorship portfolio includes national companies, such as, Suncorp, VB, Coastalwatch and TravelSIM. Surfing Australia s partnership with Suncorp continues to build momentum, with the Suncorp SunWise shade tents being seen at Surfing Australia affiliated events throughout Australia since January The core of the Australian surfing community will be drinking the nation s best cold beer in next to no time, with VB inking an agreement with Surfing Australia. The new deal guarantees VB the tag as The Beer of Surfing Australia for the next three years, along with its state branches (NSW, VIC, TAS and WA). For the most part, VB will be supporting the grass roots of Australian surfing via the new Surfing Australia VB Boardriders Club and the VB Slab of the Week programs. Coastalwatch and Surfing Australia remain committed to bringing the coast to you with Australia s leading coastal surf information portal recently renewing their agreement with the governing body of surfing in Australia for a further two years. TravelSIM, the mobile phone service for international travellers, largely supports Surfing Australia through naming rights of the highly successful TravelSIM Team Australia.

24 STATE BRANCHES Surfing New South Wales SURFING NEW SOUTH WALES is an organisation poised for the future. Having witnessed a new commercial strategy implemented by Surfing Australia and CEO Andrew Stark, Surfing NSW is now better positioned than ever to take advantage of the mainstream adoration of surfing. Having taken much time to refine our business strategy, aimed at targeting key development priority areas, Surfing NSW has seen a strategic overhaul which will benefit the entire state in the coming years. Despite this, 2010 has seen a plethora of high class surfing events pass through NSW. The Boost Surf Sho, the Geared Pro Junior, the Country Energy Australian Surf Festival, as well as the Billabong ASP World Pro Junior held at North Narrabeen. With this in mind I would like to take the opportunity to thank the work of our worldclass staff, whose amazing contribution to the sport goes unnoticed and unrewarded. To the work crew who commit themselves wholeheartedly to over 50 events up and down the coast each year, to the unflappable staff within the Surfing NSW office and the contractors and volunteers who assist where possible. Without your efforts Surfing NSW would not be where we are today. Similarly, I would like to recognise all corporate partners and state government agencies and also, the amazing performances of NSW surfers who continually strive to be the best. Surfing Victoria SURFING VICTORIA has had another solid business year and has undertaken a number of strategic new directions aimed at servicing targeted groups, many of which are under represented in our community. This has led to growing our disability, disadvantage and social justice programs aimed to provide opportunity for these sectors to access the sport of surfing. Without a doubt the most exciting announcement of 2010 has been the sourcing of funding to build a permanent home for the sport within our state. This will provide the organisation with long term ownership of an office and education complex within the Surf City Plaza shopping and commercial hub in Torquay. The primary target area for 2011 is the celebration of the 50th anniversary of our iconic event that began as the Bells Easter Classic in 1962 and today is the Rip Curl Pro. Surfing Queensland In 2010, SURFING QUEENSLAND appointed Scott Gillies to the position of Chief Executive Officer. Surfing Queensland continues to provide a proven development pathway remaining committed to surfer excellence while actively striving to develop the sport to its maximum potential within the region. From grass-roots to the elite level, Surfing Queensland s stellar events portfolio including the ASP Men s and Women s World Tour Quiksilver and Roxy Pro as well as sport development initiatives such as the free Get Wet Weekend continue to enhance the experience and opportunities of our state s ever expanding participation base.

25 Surfing Western Australia Surfing WESTERN AUSTRALIA S focus on core areas of operation in 2010 has generated some serious momentum over the past 12 months. Proven coaching and development programs coupled with a strong club and event program has provided a clearly defined pathway for the sport. Staff, board and leadership changes have seen adjustments to governance and a new thirst from corporate partners, who have seen the value in the exposure and promotion generated from Surfing WA s activity throughout all levels of surfing from grass roots programs to international events. Surfing Tasmania SURFING TASMANIA enjoyed a buoyant 2010, with the island state hosting its second WQS event, the O Neill Cold Water Classic. Surf schools continued to reach greater numbers and a third surf school licensee came on board (Coastrider Surf Academy). A Tasmanian won a National Title (John Kohlemainen) and Red Herring Surf renewed its corporate support of Surfing Tasmania. Surfing Tasmania is continuing to invest in coaching by sending key coaches to Level 2 Training and is envisaging state based Elite Programs to be underway late Surfing South Australia: SURFING SOUTH AUSTRALIA has grown its suite of programs, sponsors and services considerably in the past year. Our brilliant relationship with Fantastic Noodles has culminated with them winning the National Sponsorship award category at the Australian Marketing Institute National Awards. The campaign and concepts primarily pitched by Surfing South Australia involved developing a comprehensive national campaign with elements such as a nine-part television program, Next Wave, and a world-first Intense Wave event. The activation and integration into Fantastic s marketing mix delivered benefits for Fantastic and the surfing community. The Next Wave television series, aimed at exposing the trials and successes of all our state and pro juniors also assisted in gaining profile, growing the sport of surfing and giving the junior surfing scene great exposure. The Next Wave series culminated in a unique concept, the Fantastic Intense Wave Invitational helping to put junior surfing and South Australia s special coastline on the map. Our Pro Junior event increased again in status and prize money this year, and the Heatworks Bodyboard Pro attracted record sponsorship and competitors - cementing it as a marquee event on the Australasian Pro Circuit. We have also been focusing on the grass roots with the assistance of some wonderful volunteers. We have also overseen the emergence of a new short board junior club with over 50 members on the Yorke Peninsula and a SUP club with over 70 members kicking off on our metro beaches. Our elite and state development programs have exploded and are delivered as a self-sustaining business unit which works well for the future of surfing in South Australia. 023

28 AUSTRALIAN SURFING AWARDS INCORPORATING THE HALL OF FAME THINK OF AUSTRALIA S SURFING HISTORY AND ITS GREAT ACHIEVERS AND ONE EVENT STANDS OUT... THE AUSTRALIAN SURFING AWARDS. A new venue mixed with a who s who of the Australian surfing community and a fresh, professional management committee shaped arguably the best awards night since its inception in The 2010 awards night, which was organised by Surfing Australia and held at the Coolangatta Hotel, paid homage to surf businessman Doug Warbrick, who was finally acknowledged with his elevation to the sport s Hall of Fame. The surfer, more affectionately known as Claw, became the 32nd member respectively of the Hall of Fame, which began with the initial introduction of Snow McAllister (deceased) and four time World Champion Mark Richards in the 1980 s. Warbrick s induction was one of a number of awards that were presented on the night. Mick Fanning, two time and reigning ASP Men s World Champion, was recognised as the Male Surfer of the Year, three times ASP Women s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore was named Female Surfer of the Year, while Lennox Head s Owen Wright got the gong for Rising Star of the Year. This year s awards represented a step in the right direction for Australian surfing s premier night, with Surfing Australia overhauling the judging process for the 11 award categories excluding the Hall of Fame inductee, which was judged by a new, streamlined judging panel.

30 COMMUNITY Illicit Drugs in Sport Through funding from the Department of Health and Ageing, Surfing Australia has now undertaken the delivery of an Illicit Drugs in Sport Education program. As part of this initiative, an IDIS education policy has been developed and approved. In addition to this policy, in June 2010 a comprehensive drugs in sport presentation was incorporated into the Mark Richards U16 development camp. The program also distributed information to competitors at the Chill Pro Junior in WA and finally a comprehensive education booklet has been distributed to all Surfing Australia Boardrider Clubs. Indigenous Through the Indigenous Sport Program (ISP) funded by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), our member states were once again able to support the conduct of initiatives that seek to increase the number of Indigenous surfing participants. In addition to this program, Surfing Australia was able to secure additional funding through the Department of Health and Ageing (DOHA) to deliver targeted coaching programs which were aimed at delivering sustainable outcomes where members of selected indigenous communities gained their Level 1 Surf Coaching qualification allowing them to continue to deliver surf education into the future. These initiatives combined with the Laureus Foundation research, which is looking into the benefits of surfing within indigenous communities, maintains a strong association that has been developed over recent years. Women Surfing Australia, in conjunction with Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) International and the ASC hosted two forums to assess the needs of women participating in surf riding. The forum bought together a broad range of female stakeholders and included some of Australia s top professional surfers who were competing at the Layne Beachley Classic at Dee Why in September 2009 and then at the same event in June The forums assessed the current issues that are restricting women from participating in surf riding and looked at developing strategies to address those issues. The participants involved in the forums were given an opportunity to highlight the issues that could be acting as a barrier to further participation in surf riding. The forums allowed for an assessment of the women s competitive pathway from club involvement through to possibly competing on the world professional tour and will eventually lead to strategies to improve the support services associated with female participation in surfing.

31 029 ASP AUSTRALASIA 2010 SAW AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF ASP AUSTRALASIA SANCTIONED EVENTS, WITH THE MAJORITY OF THESE NEW EVENTS ORIGINATING FROM OUTSIDE OF AUSTRALIA FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MANY YEARS. ASP Australasia was involved in the management and sanctioning of five ASP Star events, three Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) tournaments, thirteen Pro Junior and one specialty event, with total prize money exceeding one million dollars. New additions to the schedule were; The Breaka Burleigh Pro ASP 4 Star event Couran Cove Island Resort Pro Junior Rangiroa/Tahiti Pro Junior Geared Pro Junior TSB Bank Women s Surf Festival, NZ Billabong Pro Junior, Raglan For the first time in history we held a Pro Junior event in Tahiti in what has been called by competitors, media and officials as the best surf to ever greet a Pro Junior event. Moreover, it was first time in history New Zealand hosted two Pro Junior events also saw the SriLankan Airlines Pro move from its home of four years in the Maldives to Arugam Bay in Sri Lanka, in the process becoming the first ever ASP event to be held in Sri Lanka. We again printed magazine ads to promote the Australasian Pro Junior Series and increased our promotional program to also advertise the Australian World Qualifying Series (WQS) events via Surfing World Magazine. In 2011, this advertising program will be expanded to include the ASP Australasia LQS. Our media strategies continue to evolve and improve with a visible increase in ASP surfing media present throughout looks set to see the prize money barrier well above one million dollars again and will also see New Zealand host its first ever LQS event. We are also continuing high level talks with major stakeholders in Fiji, China, PNG and Indonesia with the potential to have ASP events in these countries during Overall, ASP Australasia is in a great position to capitalise on the improving world economy, in particular the growth taking part within Asia and we look forward to working with all of our licensees and stakeholders in 2011 and beyond.
