It was an all foam twin electric from Hobby King known as the Sky Mule. After some last minute adjustment on the table it was ready for takeoff. As it quickly accelerated down the runway on it s maiden flight the portside motor came out of the engine nacelle and quickly wound it s motor leads into a fine thread as the prop splintered and the airplane flipped on it s back leaving a stream of debris. A couple of us helped gather the pieces and deposit them on the work table. Wayne expressed some discontent with the quality of this airplane and proclaimed it s next destination to be the trash can. I being from the old days of building from kits looked at this as just being some parts that needed to be put back together. Wayne, without hesitation, gave me the remains plus a couple of new spare props. I took the pieces home for a closer look and found that the manufacture was a bit stingy, to say the least, in the use of glue to hold this thing together. What little adhesive that was apparent had the gluing power about that of sticky snot. I repaired some stripped wire insulation on the breakaway motor and found they both worked. 2 Twins almost! Must have been a rough day of flying at the field. Ed Pare, Howard Power and Wayne Sweet sit down, relax and swap lies..er stories. Think I even heard a few rare words of criticism as others were on the flight line trying to master the skill of flying, landing or whatever else you do with the flying machines. Nobody was doing it right!! Looks like you should have a beer in your hands. The Prez Says Continued from Page 1) The shaft on one was slightly bent and required some delicate straightening. I began gluing some of the broken foam back together with some acrylic (ShoGoo like) adhesive. After drying the glue stuck very well to the foam and the broken joints were not all that visible. I glued everything back together with ample amount of Goo, and, low and behold, I had an airplane. A few days later I took this to the field for it s rebirth maiden flight (picture above left). To my delight the airplane flies very well. It s got plenty of power, is very responsive yet easy on the controls. It s a fun airplane to fly and then there is that cool sound of twin engines harmonizing as it whizzes by. Thanks Wayne, and please let me know when you re gonna maiden something new. :-) On Saturday the 19th of March we had our little slope glider get together over at the bluffs in Sand City. The weather was nice with light winds most of the morning that produced marginal lift. Tristan, Cody Bell and his mom, Robert Shaver and myself were the only club members in attendance. Around noon when we were about to call it a day the wind suddenly came up which provided for some lively and fun flying. Coming up on the 23 & 24th we will again be hosting the first of two IMAC contests this year. We will be making lunches available both days and need a few volunteers to help with B-B-Qing, food shack, running and scribing duties. Free sirloin burgers meals will be provide to the help. 3 LEASE The lease between the County of Monterey and Salinas Area Modelers for the site at the old Chualar landfill expires in June. Therefore we have started negotiations for a new lease. Our Use Permit only expires if we fail to keep a current lease, so it is certainly in our best interest to get the lease renewed. Brett Fulgoni is the County contact I am working with. We have come to terms and the Board has signed off on the very small changes. The lease rate has not changed in the 30 years we have been at the present site. It has remained at $375 annually all those years. Brett thought an increase was in order and it was hard to argue since we have been the same for so long. The agreement is that the lease will go up $50 per year to $425 at the approval of the new lease. The initial term is five years with two additional 5 year options. That means as long as we give them written notice 60 days in advance of the expiration date the renewals are automatic. If we exercise the first option the rate will increase another $50 annually to $475 per year, and the second option ten years down the road would increase $25 to $500 annually. Many clubs pay that much monthly, so we feel fortunate to have such a low rate. The only other change to the lease will add language prohibiting fires at the site, language that is already in our Sue Permit. Once the lease draft is drawn up it is forwarded to the Monterey County Counsel for their approval, then to the Board of Supervisors for implementation. Normally that is a consent agenda item. Hopefully the process will be complete by the end of April. The new lease will commence July 1, 2016, and with all options will carry us through June 30, Bob McGregor Left Unidentified aircraft that belongs to Steve Perkins. 4 Well everyone, the Helicopter/Quad-copter/ Control line concrete pad is complete. (Picture to the right) Dennis worked with our tractor and dragged out a very suitable Control line infinite runway (circle ha). The control line area is just large enough to fly the Big boys (.60 sized birds on 70 foot lines) This means that SAM field is now fully control line, Helicopter and Quad-copter capable, perfect and Cool! Let s Get Radical by Crazy Ivan I m planning on defending our.46 modified Warbird pylon racing trophies this year with my new Great Planes sport.40 P-51 Mustang. It s got an OS.46 AXll sporting a ¼ wave Jett tuned pipe or, being only ¼ wave I say tuned exhaust, still It s a very solid RPM increase; it screams quite well. Test flown today she s pretty darn fast (100mph???) and, very nimble in the turns. I m betting that, win lose or draw, it (pylon racing) is going to be great fun! Odds anyone? A Thermal (glider) event is upcoming (May 7 th ) and I wanted to send out a re-invitation to anyone interested. The Winch system really makes the day fun, it quickly retrieves the line after the launch so there s very short wait times to fly. I ve got a 100 Aquila with spoilers that I ll provide flight time on if anyone wants to give it a try, so come on out! Crazy Ivan Page 4

He must be on the takeoff roll above, not landing, because it is on the centerline. Below on approach for landing over our own private forest. Tristan Williams is using foam sheets to cut out and build his airplanes. Above is his homebrew Electric Zagi knockoff. At the right he is launching the aircraft. It flies extremely well and is fully aerobatic. Tristan has been observed doing loops both inside and outside, rolls and corkscrews in any and every direction. To the upper right is a bi-wing of Tristan s own design. It appears to be a handful (to us old guys) but Tristan handles it well.

6 The slope event did take place as scheduled at the Sand City Beach site. Left is Robert Shaver s Le Fish, and below is Dennis Stanley s glider. Second below are two Zagi s in the air appearing top be doing combat. One belongs to Tristan and the other to a gentleman named Ken that often shows up at the beach when we are having our annual event. Below - No, the Cub really isn t out of control. Honest! Remember to bring a salad or dessert to share. The club supplies the main course and beverages, unless you want a beer and then it is BYOB. We also hold the membership meeting during the ruddergate. These events are always a lot of fun and there is always a lot of good food. And remember, your family is invited. Traditionally one or more club member(s) volunteer to cook. It has a wing span of inches, wing area of 1487 square inches, a length of 67.8 inches and will weigh between 16 and 25 pounds depending on the engine chosen and how you finish the airplane.
