30 What do our candidates think of our courses and seminars? Candidates on an ASA Level Certificate for Coaching Swimming course at Catterick said Thanks once again... it was really interesting and of great help to my coaching, thank you for your excellent couple of weekends teaching. It has been very interesting. May I also compliment you personally on your ability to listen to points made and not be too on message and...excellent 2 days course. One coach obviously put what he had learnt into immediate action Just to let you know that I have had 9 finalists at Nationals so far. Last year I had and it is only the rd day! A record number of 76 delegates took part in a Flip n Fun CPD seminar organised for swimming teachers employed by a local Council. At the end one stood up and said, I would like to thank Jo (Calvino) and Rebecca (Burrows), this has been the best CPD I ve ever attended! Candidates at an ASA Level 1 Certificate for Coaching Swimming course in High Wycombe were very impressed, comments included: excellent foundation course - appreciated the opportunity to coach hands on. Refreshingly different! Thoroughly enjoyed course... many thanks to Jean for her patience and support, a really good group dynamic and good course - especially given it was only the second time that it has been run At an ASA Level 2 Certificate for Coaching Water Polo course, held in conjunction with the National Water Polo camp, tutors also have said how much they enjoy running these courses the flexibility of the new UKCC programme is great, it gives me much more time to actually concentrate upon giving a quality learning experience to the candidates. 31 Words of AdviCe - Pippa Jones, ASA Tutor Pippa specialises in Water Polo and is one of our busiest and most popular course tutors. Here she gives us an insight into her work. What courses do you tutor? ASA Level 1 & Level 2 Certificate for Coaching Water Polo. What is your background? I studied Physical Education at Warwick University, which is when I started playing Water Polo. After teaching leisure studies to year olds for 10 years in Coventry I moved into sports development, specifically swimming. Later I became a qualified ASA Teacher and Coach and I have been an ASA tutor since I always remember the Tutor Training course because it was taken by David Sparkes! I now also lecture in PE, Sports Coaching and Sports Development at Sheffield Hallam University. What are the typical kinds of candidates on your courses? A wide range - from Level 1 Swimming Teachers wanting to expand their skills up to senior international players who want to begin coaching. The swimming teachers quite often have lots of experience in organising the kids but have little technical knowledge in the game itself. Other candidates have a massive amount of technical knowledge - they really need help with unpicking it and presenting in bite sized chunks. It is often quite a challenge dealing with a combination of skill levels in one course. What do you enjoy most about tutoring? Working with people is what gives me the most enjoyment. I also gain immense satisfaction from seeing candidates develop - some of those who I taught at Level 1 now have positions coaching national teams and gone on to do some fantastic things. I love tutoring courses and as well as obviously transferring my knowledge I always come away with new ideas myself. Do you have a specific delivery style? My courses are always very interactive with a lot of emphasis on practical activities rather than just spouting theory! I like to build a relationship with each candidate and get to know their learning style - we both get much more out of the course that way. No two courses are the same - I tailor my delivery dependent on who is in front of me. For Course Dates and Venues or contact customerservices@swimming.org

32 Some courses are long & detailed, how do you keep the interest levels up? Again that focus on practical activity is key, the more opportunities coaches have to get in the water themselves and have a go, the better. I like to get them doing activities that they will be doing in real life as a coach. I also make sure they are fun and enjoyable. What kind of feedback have you received? Very positive - my last group of candidates gave me a bottle of wine and flowers to say thank you. I have played a big part in water polo teaching and coaching for the last 10 years and many candidates have returned to study for the next level, which is the best kind of result! The other thing candidates appreciate is that I am available afterwards to answer queries - sometimes I might help with a couple of questions but they often then have the confidence to just get on with it! What advice would you give to those considering a UKCC endorsed course? These courses give you the opportunity to work with other people rather than in isolation and to be part of a bigger network. The other great thing is that candidates attending a course together often communicate afterwards to share ideas and experiences, which all goes towards giving them the confidence to get on and develop their careers. 33 Words of AdviCe - Tracie Gorst, Coach Tracie is a Swimming Coach for Trafford Metro who has attended the UKCC endorsed ASA Level Certificate for Coaching Swimming. What is your background? I have been involved in swimming for 0 years. I have competed at a high level both in World and European Masters and have been selected for the Cheshire team for the last three years. I started teaching in 1996 and was Chief Coach with Old Trafford for three years. At the moment I work with Trafford Metro on the age group development programme and support the masters coaching squad. I am also the NW Masters representative on the ASA technical committee. What do you enjoy about being a coach? It s a really fulfilling role - I took a squad of 26 to the ASA Masters National Championships with fantastic results: we had 15 individual national champions and relay national champions, with one swimmer attaining British records. What did you think of the course? I highly enjoyed the units and the support tools are very useful - when I got home and read through the learner guide everything just dropped into place. The land based training was good and was explained really well at an elite level. The psychology section was brilliant - I can see how my masters group can use certain coping strategies to aid their own performances so it was very interesting. What part of the course was most beneficial to you? My particular favourite was the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) unit - the tutor was very engaging and made the module really interesting. It gave me a list of things I wanted to take back to my club and implement straight away. That s good because it means there are benefits to those who don t only work at an elite level. Has anything you have learned changed the way you work? I am starting to work with the Borough squad Swim Trafford and they had 11 National qualifiers this year at age group and 4 at the Youths. As a result of what I learnt on the LTAD unit I am going to start measuring their peak high velocity to calculate when they will have growth spurts. It s easy to do when you know how and I am sure it will bring tangible benefits to the club. For Course Dates and Venues or contact customerservices@swimming.org

34 What advice would you give to those considering a UKCC endorsed course? Just get on and do it! It can seem a little scary but don t forget everyone on the course there with you is in the same boat. I was a bit apprehensive beforehand but once we got started it was very enjoyable. Also people should speak to their education officer to find out about help with the costs - I was fully funded by Greater Sport. You get so much support, all the tutors are absolutely fantastic and their enthusiasm really rubs off on you. My course was delivered in such a positive, passionate manner - it s exactly what the sport needs. There are so many coaches out there that would benefit from these courses, they just need the encouragement to get on and do the next step!
