2 Lifesaving Instructor Course Approved Prior Learning The Approved Prior Learning (APL) course outlines contained in this document provide guidance for Course Tutors delivering the Lifesaving Instructor Course to candidates who have previous teaching qualifications and experience. The APL course outlines provide guidance about which elements of the full Lifesaving Instructor Course the candidates are likely to require training in, however, it is the responsibility of the Course Tutor to ensure that all candidates achieve all of the learner outcomes identified on the Assessment Form. 3 Lifesaving Instructor Course Syllabus and Course Outline Module Purpose Lifesaving Instructor Course. To qualify members of the Royal Lifesaving Society UK with the required to deliver the Survive and Save Programme, and the Community Outreach Programme. Staffing The course must be delivered by a Lifesaving Instructor Tutor. 1 Instructor Tutor to 12 candidates (up to 24 candidates with 2 or more Instructor Tutors). Module Outcomes Candidate Prerequisites Course Administration Course Organisation By the end of this module candidates will: Be able to deliver aquatic lifesaving safely and effectively. Be able to deliver dry lifesaving safely and effectively. Have a practical knowledge of the course organisation and administration requirements of the Survive and Save Programme. Have a practical knowledge of the RLSS UK safety and safeguarding requirements and policies. Aged 17 years or above (Lifesaving Instructors aged 17 years must have an Instructor aged 18+ years in the teaching venue when they are teaching). Hold or have held a Heritage Bronze Medallion or higher, or a Silver Level Survive and Save award or higher (candidates with no lifesaving experience may complete the additional Lifesaving Skills Option - see course outline at the back of this guide). Hold a current Life Support 3 award (or NRASTC with infant Life Support, NPLQ, or NBLQ). A free Life Support 3 assessment can be completed as part of this course for candidates who do not hold the award. A free life support 3 form can be obtained from the RLSSUK Volunteer and Community team call , this award is noncertificated, but will be added to their record Hold current RLSS UK individual membership. The Course Tutor must register the course with RLSS UK 28 days prior to the start date (registration at All candidates must receive the Lifesaving Instructor Pack at least one week before the course. Candidates must retain the course Assessment Form upon completion of the course. Candidates must send the completed course Assessment Form to RLSS UK within 28 days of completing the Post Course Experiential Learning. This course can: Be delivered in sessions to best suit the needs of the candidates. Course Assessment The Course Tutor is responsible for overseeing the assessment of the candidates. Each candidate will be observed and assessed through continuous assessment during the course.

4 Each candidate is required to demonstrate all of the learner outcomes identified on the Assessment Form, these are: The candidate has completed all required elements of the Lifesaving Instructor Course. The candidate has shown the ability to safely, competently, and confidently TEACH and ASSESS the and information contained in the Lifesaving Manual for Instructors. The candidate has shown the ability to safely, competently, and confidently TEACH and ASSESS the and information contained in the Life Support Manual. The candidate has the Lifesaving Instructor Course pre-requisites, including minimum age, Life Support 3 Award, and Individual Membership. The candidate has completed the Additional Lifesaving Skills Option (if required). Candidates who cannot demonstrate all of the learner outcomes during the course must fail the course. The Course Tutor will notify the candidate of the result at the end of the course. Unsuccessful candidates may re-take the course. Post Course Learning Following the successful completion of the course, candidates must complete the experience building as stated in this document. Resources Tutor: Lifesaving Instructor course syllabus and PowerPoint presentation. Candidate: Lifesaving Instructor Course Pack. Allocation of Hours See APL guidance. Facilities Classroom and Pool. Equipment Projector and laptop. Flipchart. Pens and paper. Rescue aids. Resuscitation manikins and cleansing wipes. First Aid teaching equipment. Safety The provision of safety guidance is the responsibility of the Course Tutor. NOP and EAP of the training facility must be adhered to. Suitable supervision and rescue cover must be in place on the poolside.

5 RLSS UK Lifesaving Instructor Administration Chart Course Tutor s Responsibilities Download the Lifesaving Instructor Course Tutor resources from Register the Lifesaving Instructor course at Order a Lifesaving Instructor Course Candidate Resource for each candidate from Lifesavers Direct ( using the course registration number, and distribute to the candidates at least one week before the course. Deliver the Lifesaving Instructor course and complete the assessment of the candidates Complete Section 1 of the Lifesaving Instructor Course Assessment Form, retain the back page of the triplicate form, and give the remaining 2 pages to the candidate Candidate s Responsibilities Complete the 10hrs Post Course Experience Building, working with a qualified Lifesaving Instructor or Tutor Ask the qualified Lifesaving Instructor or Tutor to complete Section 2 of the Lifesaving Instructor Course Assessment Form Send the original/top copy of the completed Lifesaving Instructor Course Assessment Form to RLSS UK HQ RLSS UK HQ Responsibilities Lifesaving Instructor Course Assessment Form is processed and new Card of Authority is dispatched to the candidate
