3 About Ellesmere College Titans Swimming; Dear Titans Swimmers and Parents, It is my pleasure to formally welcome you to the Titans swimming family. Ellesmere College Titans (ECT) has a proud tradition in the world of swimming; one which we strive to maintain and enhance. One of the most impressive trademarks of ECT is that it has consistently pushed the boundaries within sporting, academic and pastoral environments over the course of the last 10 years and we continue to better ourselves and enhance your children s experience year on year. In relation to the swimming program, we have continually achieved across many areas of the sport. Within our performance section we have helped put multiple junior and senior internationals on GB teams since This currently sits at 16 athletes and counting and our most recent Commonwealth Games medalist Freya Anderson, who competed at the 2018 Gold Coast Games, returning with two bronze medals is testament to this. The continuation and development of this tradition is something we always encourage to be at the forefront of our motivated team s thoughts. Inevitably, it comes down to the swimmers; coaches; teachers and parent s willingness to embrace change; set aside personal desires and believe in the process. The swimming program is based around a simple principle talent isn t born its grown! The journey never stops and we always ensure our focus is on having fun; building a holistic environment and swimming fast at the benchmark meet. Our coaching and support staff is knowledgeable, qualified, driven and creative people who make every effort to develop the systems that support athletes on their journey. Not only do we want to help create a great swimmer, but an industrious pupil and an outstanding person. We aim to offer an environment where enjoyment and success are inevitable. This handbook has been devised to provide information regarding a number of the many and varied processes that allow the operation of the ECT Swimming Program. I hope that the document provides clear information; though of course if you feel that anything requires further explanation, clarification or additional information then please make contact with the relevant member of the swimming staff. This is a living document, and information is correct at time of publication and some information may change prior to the next update. Once again, we welcome you to the Ellesmere College Titans and look forward to supporting, following and contributing to your success through your time with the team. Yours Sincerely; Alan Bircher - Director of Swimming 3

4 Ellesmere College Titans Ethos, Values and Culture; In Greek mythology, the Titans were a race of godlike giants. The Titan Oceanus was the god of the great earthencircling river, the font of all the earth s fresh-water. He was depicted as a bull-horned god with the tail of a serpentine fish. In the pool, we pride ourselves on being the heirs to this dynasty of giants. The Ellesmere College Program aims to identify and develop the best aquatic athletes in Britain in order to achieve aquatic medals on the world stage. Our aim to be a talent hotspot designed to encourage and develop the most promising swimmers of the future and to identify individuals with the potential to achieve Olympic podium success. It s not enough to simply dream, you have to dream big! Anything is possible you just need to believe it. Whether you think you can or you can t you re right. 1. To provide swimmers with an atmosphere where application, participation and achievement are welcomed and encouraged 2. To enhance external engagement and attraction by promoting and advocating the values of ECT to the wider community leading to the attraction of swimmers with excellent character and potential 3. To develop our staff and squads to support each other in there personal development 4. To develop a club where winning and competing at the highest level is the benchmark for success 5. A positive and enthusiastic culture which is contagious to all who come into contact ECT strives to achieve the highest standards and always aims to instill a strong and positive set of values, whilst creating a culture to amplify these values and beliefs. All our coaches consistently and actively encourage all pupils to be enthusiastic, positive, supportive, accepting and team orientated; whilst always inspiring a culture where pupils are committed, tough, dedicated and focused on their development. Alongside all of these traits, we aim to ensure that team members enjoy their ECT experience; ensuring all of our values help inspire community, leadership and excellence within each child. 4

8 Contacts & Communication; New Ellesmere College Parents Firstly, the Ellesmere College Parent Society would like to welcome you to Ellesmere College and to its Swimming Program; Ellesmere College Titans (ECT). You have made a great choice to maximize your child s swimming potential. A decision intended to achieve what every parent wants, a great education with maximum sporting advantage. In short a win win. We know that joining anywhere new can sometimes be uncertain and to make joining easier new parents often just want to have access to another parent for their questions and to be pointed in the right direction. This is particularly true when trying to understand how the College and the Titans fit and how they best work together. Pauline Hale, Ellesmere College/Titans Parent Liaison and Joint Chair of ECPS (Ellesmere College Parent Society) can help with this and is available as a good first point of contact for all new parents of Ellesmere College. If you have any questions you can reach Pauline at pauline.phale@gmail.com. Communication; At ECT, we believe that effective communication is essential to the smooth running of our program, and the subsequent enjoyment of all program stakeholders. Our coaching and administrative staff strives to offer methods of communication that are both wide reaching and contemporary. 10 Payments & Meet Entries; Competition Outline; The annual competition plan is designed by the coaches to support the swimmers training, measure the swimmers progress and develop racing skills. It therefore will meet the goals of each swimmer in their competitive group. An intensive training regime requires time to allow swimmers to recover and therefore Titans do not over compete. This is important since it gives swimmers time to improve their performance and therefore to validate both the benefits of their program and to build confidence through progresses. Should swimmers wish to participate in non-titans competition, other than school galas then please discuss with your squad coach in advance. This should be done before any bookings, entries or financial commitments have been made. All meets will be published on the clubs website at the beginning of September. Meet Entries and Payment; At ECT, the coaches will discuss with the swimmers which events each swimmer would like to enter in each meet in order to aid each swimmers development both throughout the season and to aide their long term development. The age group swimmers will focus on the longer distance events and all swimmers will be challenged by the coaching team by entering events that they do not normally do. In Age Development and Age Performance competitive stroke preference is specifically avoided and Individual Medley positive encouraged. Parents will be sent a copy of the proposed entries for their child and the coaches will be open for discussion on these entries. Our Meet Secretary will then enter the events and send them onto the relevant club. Please note that our Meet Secretary will only accept entry instructions from the coaches and will not accept entry instructions from parents or swimmers. Please note that entry into National competitions is the sole responsibility of swimmers and is not done on their behalf by the Meet Secretary or the club. Ellesmere College Boarder; The club will liaise with Ellesmere College to arrange transport and hotel accommodation prior to the meet for those swimmers, which require either or both. Parents will still be required to liaise with the College if your child is leaving site. The coaches will confirm transport and accommodation needs by with parents before each event. Parents are free to make their own transport and accommodation arrangements for planned events. Where this is the case, they should inform the coach as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary costs. In addition, it is important to make sure when doing so that you are able to support specific meet arrangements relating to team building, race preparation or warm up times. Paying for events; Itemised statements are provided to parents each month and are payable on receipt which detail: Training fees Meet and entry costs Accommodation and subsistence costs 10

11 Squad Fees, Payments and Conditions; ECT Squad s Cost Per Calendar Month National Squad (Minimum Yr10+) (NS) 90 National Sprint Squad (Minimum Yr10+) (NSS) 90 Age Performance Squad (Yrs 8-10/11) (APS) 90 Age Development Squad (Yrs 4-8) (ADS) 90 In the event that amounts owing are not paid within 30 days, the club may at its discretion restrict further participation in competition or training until outstanding amounts are settled. Conditions; The club is committed to helping swimmers achieve their full goals provided that members demonstrate equal if not greater commitment. The coaching team shall be responsible for developing training program s appropriate to the needs of individuals. Members shall be responsible for following the program. The committee believes that the success of individuals is influenced by an elite environment success breeds success. Membership is limited and opportunities must be afforded to new talent. Therefore there may be occasions when either uncommitted, underperforming or misbehaving members or their parents will be asked to leave the club. Decisions to terminate shall be taken in accordance with the club s constitution and shall take account a range of matters, including but not limited to: 1. Levels of attendance, 2. Squad selection criteria 3. Training performance, for example attitude, behaviour and teamwork 4. Competition performance, for example following the approved competition plan In applying these criteria, account shall be taken of reasons that beyond the control of the swimmers for example injury and examinations. Any termination and such grounds shall be dealt with in accordance with rule 6 (Expulsion) of the club s constitution. A member wishing to resign membership of the club must give the secretary a minimum of three months written notice of his or her resignation. Members in receipt of any Ellesmere College Swimming Scholarship must provide a whole terms notice Titans Squad Requirements Squad allocation and movement between squads is entirely at the coaching teams and ultimately the director of swimming s discretion. Where squads are full it may not be possible to accommodate expected movements. 11

As part of the ECT Swimming team, each swimmer will need to ensure they have these items and wear them to the listed competitions.
