ABOUT MILLFIELD SWIMMING Dear Millfield Swimmers and Parents, It is my pleasure to formally welcome you to the Millfield swimming family. Millfield has a proud tradition in the world of swimming; one which we strive to maintain and enhance. One of the most impressive trademarks of Millfield is that it has consistently pushed boundaries within sporting, academic and pastoral environments over the course of the last 75 years and continues to be at the cutting edge of these areas. In the relation to the swimming programme, we have continually achieved across many areas of the sport. Within our performance arm we have helped put at least one swimmer on every British Olympic swimming team since This currently sits at 25 athletes and counting and our most recent Olympians, Cameron Kurle and James Guy, competed at the 2016 Rio Games. James improved the program s total tally to five Olympic medals by claiming two silvers at the Games. The continuation and development of this tradition is something we always encourage to be at the forefront of our motivated team s thoughts. Inevitably, it comes down to the swimmers; coaches; teachers and parent s willingness to embrace change; set aside personal desires and believe in the process. The swimming programme is based around a simple principle culture breeds success! The journey never stops and we always ensure our focus is on having fun; building a holistic environment and swimming fast! Our coaching and support staff are knowledgeable, qualified, driven and creative people who make every effort to develop the systems that support athletes on their journey. Not only do we want to help create a great swimmer, but an industrious pupil and an outstanding person. We aim to offer an environment where enjoyment and success are inevitable. This handbook has been devised to provide information regarding a number of the many and varied processes that allow the operation of the Millfield School Swimming Program. I hope that the document provides clear information; though of course if you feel that anything requires further explanation, clarification or addition then please make contact with a relevant member of the swimming staff. This is a living document, and information is correct at time of publication and some information may change prior to the next update. Once again, we welcome you to the Millfield Swimming Program and look forward to supporting, following and contributing to your success through your time with the team. Yours Sincerely, Euan Dale - Director of Swimming

THE MILLFIELD SWIMMING MISSION AND VISION Vision The Millfield School Swimming Team aims to offer its members and staff a positive environment that promotes the skills of commitment and dedication in a constructive atmosphere where hard work and fun is the norm. The Team and its staff strive to value positivity, enthusiasm and acceptance all held within a mind set that our individuals and the Team will be the best of the best. We consistently aim to help discover and develop the potential in each pupil. The Millfield School Swimming Team view the sport of swimming as a vehicle through which the whole Team can measure success, promote self esteem and self belief and through which to offer service to wider community. Objectives 1. To provide swimmers with an atmosphere where optimal application, participation and achievement are welcomed and encouraged 2. To facilitate opportunity for swimmers to reach their relevant optimal standard of swimming qualification. 3. To encourage and promote international swimming success and give opportunity for swimmers to compete internationally where appropriate for their development by fostering relationships with the National Governing Body for Swimming and its relative auspices. 4. To enhance external engagement and attraction by promoting and advocating the values of the Millfield Swimming Team in the wider community leading to the attraction of swimmers with excellent character and potential. 5. To develop our staff by supporting all employed members of the Millfield Swimming Team to engage in continual learning and personal development.

VALUES AND CULTURE Our Values Millfield Swimming strives to achieve the highest standards and always aims to instil a strong and positive set of values, whilst creating a culture to amplify these values and beliefs. All our coaches consistently and actively encourage all the pupils to be enthusiastic, positive, supportive, accepting and team orientated; whilst always inspiring a culture where pupils are committed, tough, dedicated and focussed on their development. Alongside all of these desirable traits, we aim to ensure that team members enjoy their Millfield experience; ensuring all of our values help inspire community, leadership and excellence within each pupil. Pupil s Responsibility As a member of the program, the pupil represents not only themselves, but also the entire Millfield Swimming community. Therefore, pupils are expected to conduct themselves at all times with exemplary behaviour. The pupils are expected to attend the required sessions for the squad they are in as per their individual timetable established by the coaching staff. The pupil are also expected to communicate with the coaching staff, and follow the direction of the coaches at all times. Pupils should seek feedback from the coaching staff during meets and workouts. The pupil should strive to display team spirit, both at meets and during workouts, through wearing the correct apparel, taking an interest in their teammates goals and achievements, and be a positive presence in and out of the pool. Coach s Responsibilities The coaching staff at Millfield Swimming are responsible for supervising the team during relevant training sessions and meet competitions. Coaches serve as role models for the pupils at all time, and have control over all matters that affect training and competition, such as: Advising pupils on proper squad placement. Designing and implementing pool and dryland workouts for the team. Assisting pupils in proper goal setting for in and out of season training. Deciding on all meet teams. Properly implementing warm up and cool down procedures. Promoting the team concept at all times. Promoting a positive atmosphere for the swimmers to learn, train and compete in. The coaching staff is continually updating its skills in order to challenge the pupils of the Millfield Swimming program. It is both the pupils and the parent s responsibility to support the coaching staff at all times.

Parents Responsibilities Parents play a key role in the success of any athlete. With the right kind of support, encouragement, and communication, the pupil will not only enjoy the experience, but also grow during the process. The Ten Commandments For Parents of Athletic Children (Reprinted from The Young Athlete by Bill Burgess included in The Swim Parents Newsletter) I. Make sure your child knows that win or lose, scared or heroic you love him/ her, appreciate their efforts, and are not disappointed in them. This will allow them to do their best without a fear of failure. Be the person in their life they can look to for constant positive reinforcement. II. Try your best to be completely honest about your child s athletic ability, his/hers competitive attitude, their sportsmanship, and their actual skill level. III. Be helpful, but don t coach him/her on the way to the pool or on the way back in the car, or at breakfast, and so on. It s tough not to, but it s a lot tougher for the child to be inundated with advice, pep talks and often critical instruction. IV. Teach them to enjoy the thrill of competition, to be out there trying, to be working to improve his/her swimming skills and attitudes. Help him/her to develop the feel for competing, for trying hard, for having fun. V. Try not to re-live your athletic life through your child in a way that creates pressure; you lost as well as won. You were frightened, you backed off at times, you were not always heroic. Don t pressure your child because of your pride. Athletic children need their parents, so you must not withdraw. Just remember there is a thinking, feeling, sensitive free spirit out there in that uniform who needs a lot of understanding, especially when their world turns bad. If he/she is comfortable with you win or lose he/she is on their way to maximum achievement and enjoyment. VI. Don t compete with the coach. If the coach is forced to become an authority figure, it will run from enchantment to disenchantment, etc., with your athlete. VII. Don t compare the skill, courage, or attitudes of your child with other members of the team in negative terms. VIII. Get to know the coach so that you can be assured that his/her philosophy, attitudes, ethics, and knowledge are such that you are happy to have your child under his/her leadership. IX. Always remember that children tend to exaggerate, both when praised and when criticized. Temper your reaction and investigate before over-reacting.

X. Make a point of understanding courage, and the fact that it is relative. Some of us can climb mountains, and are afraid to fight. Some of us will fight, but turn to jelly if a bee approaches. Everyone is frightened in certain areas. Explain that courage is not the absence of fear, but a means of doing something in spite of fear of discomfort.

COACHING TEAM Our Team The Millfield Swimming Team Coaches bring knowledge of swimming that is second to none and are constantly seeking out the advances in swimming and coaching techniques around the world so as to remain at the cutting edge of the sport, and as such inspire the swimmers within the Millfield Swimming Program. Left to Right: Rachel Aldington, James Clarke, Jak Mullins, Euan Dale, Helen Gouldby, Ellie Devine, Liam Wilcox, Holly Gunner (Not pictured Daniel Waddingham, Grace Vertigans) Euan Dale Director of Swimming A former Millfieldian himself, , Euan Dale returned to Millfield after a 6 year hiatus in which he attended Loughborough University competing on their prestigious swim team and receiving a degree in Accounting and Finance. Euan is a highly decorated swimmer a double Commonwealth silver medalist (400m IM & 4x200m Freestyle relay), a European silver medalist (4x200m Freestyle relay) and a 9-time British National Champion. To top it

off, he competed for Britain in the 2008 Olympic Games, swimming in the 400IM alongside the great Michael Phelps. Since joining the coaching staff at Millfield in 2010, Euan has progressed from Assistant Coach to Head Assistant Coach and onto his current role as Director of Swimming. Euan has been instrumental in guiding and shaping the growth of Millfield Swimming since Euan has supported athletes to at the levels of swimming from the County to Olympic podium. Euan has worked with both British Swimming and Team GB over the course of his coaching career. Euan started his coaching career at Warrender Bath Swimming Club in Edinburgh where he worked with their age group program. Whilst attending Millfield, Euan was developed by current Director of Swimming at the Prep School, Helen Gouldby. Jak Mullins Lead Coach (Boys) A National swimmer until the age of 17, Jak was coached at Gloucester City. He comes to Millfield after learning his trade in Swansea, working with the elite coaches in the performance programs there for several years. Learning from the experienced and successful coaches in Swansea, Jak hopes to expand on these experiences and challenge himself and the swimmers to learn and develop. Jak completed an undergraduate degree in Classics in Birmingham, which he then furthered with a Masters in Ancient Literature in Swansea. Whilst an odd choice of degree for a swimming coach, it provided an interest away from sport that still remains. He also loves to talk about (and to play!) American football; following the Pittsburgh Steelers. Jak has a large role in the development of the junior athletes on the team and has seen them go from strength to strength through his time here; competing at Nationals, British Championships, European Junior Championships and gaining International experience along the way. Working with the Junior Males and alongside Coach Aldington, Jak continues to develop and nurture the plethora of young talent that enters the school as well as working with the senior swimmers to achieve their potential. Rachel Aldington Lead Coach (Girls) Rachel represented Backwell and the City of Salford as a competitive swimmer before moving to Cyprus to teach swimming. A degree in Sports Rehabilitation led her to the side of the pitch

at Manchester Rugby Club and for Scotland under 21's but she remained active on poolside throughout. On completion of her role as North Somerset Community Swimming Coach in 2008, Rachel began working as a Teaching Assistant & having always had a love of numbers; she returned to University in Bath and trained to become a Teacher of Mathematics. The skills required to ensure that students from an area of high deprivation could achieve their targets at school, have transferred favourably into Rachel s coaching and play a large role in the great performances seen by Weston-super-Mare Swimming Club (a small swim skills club) in recent years. In her time as Head Coach of WSMSC, Rachel regularly worked with athletes from learn to swim to those competing at National level and feels that this continuity played an important role, as athletes enjoyed their competitive swimming development journey. Rachel will head up the Goodhew and Junior Girls squad that has some exciting opportunities ahead! James Clarke Assistant Coach A former Millfieldian himself, (whilst attending Millfield, James swam alongside current Director of Swimming, Euan Dale!) during , James Clarke returns to Millfield after attending both Loughborough University and the University of Hawaii. Whilst competing for these prestigious swim teams, James received a degree in Sports Management. James brings both a rich International swimming background, along with his teamorientated mind following his time swimming in the USA. James has swum for Great Britain at both Junior and Senior level, and as a Junior he broke three British Junior, and Age Group records. During his time in Hawaii, James narrowly missed the school record for the 500 yard Freestyle, helped the University win their first ever Conference title, and was the teams captain in his Senior Year. James rejoins Millfield after his two-year adventure in Singapore coaching at United World College with the talented athletes and coaches in the program. James brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the coaching team and will head up the multi-sport squad that includes several International and National athletes.

Ellie Devine Office Superstar Before taking 18 years off to raise her family of 6 children, Ellie worked in Personnel or HR as it is now known. She has 9 grandchildren, the most recent arriving in July 2013 so her family keeps her pretty busy! She is also an ardent football fan and has supported the Mighty Spurs since childhood, which has, at times proved interesting in a household of Manchester United supporters! Ellie s been at Millfield since 2004 and can t believe how quickly the time has flown by and how many changes the department has undergone. She arrived knowing absolutely nothing about the world of swimming, and has enjoyed finding out more and more over the years but admits there is still plenty to learn! Ellie says she loves working in the Swimming Department it s a very chilled out place to be, even when the pressure is on. Helen Gouldby Director of Prep School Swimming Helen is Millfield through and through having swum for the school from and during that time also representing Great Britain at the European Championships, Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games. After studying at Swansea University, Helen returned to Millfield Senior School as Assistant Coach and then gained her qualifications as advanced swimming teacher and coach. She was then charged with restructuring the swimming program at Millfield Prep School where she has been based since Helen s passion for swimming excellence and her ideology of developing the highest level of skills and technique from an early age is evident in the outstanding quality of swimmers produced through her program. Nothing gives her greater pleasure than having a former pupil coaching with her today and also watching her eldest daughter compete. She is greatly indebted to the support of Lin Skirton, a fellow Olympian, who has worked Liam Wilcox Assistant Coach Liam began volunteering when he was nine, doing demonstrations and then helping on poolside. When he was 15 Liam took part in the Young Volunteers programme and had the opportunity to gain his team manager 1, judge 1 and then his level 1 teaching qualifications. At club he was then given a small group of swimmers to work with, developing their skills, techniques and supporting them at galas and open meets.

Following this, Liam was selected to join the National Young Coaches Academy and the following year the National Young Officials Academy. These programmes lead to being selected as a mentor at the last National Talent camp. Liam has a strong passion for his work and stick by the mantra that "if you believe, you can achieve. Liam stands firm on the belief that getting the chance to help young people find their first few steps on their journey is the best feeling. Holly Gunner Junior Coach Holly Gunner grew up in Salcombe (South Devon) and attended The University of Birmingham, where she completed a Sports Science and Coaching degree, and represented their emergent swimming team. Since joining the Millfield coaching staff in 2015, Holly has worked alongside Helen Gouldby to build upon the strength of the junior squads at Millfield Prep School. Holly brings a wealth of experience to the team as a National level swimmer herself (50m Butterfly & 50m Freestyle) and having coached swimmers from age-group to National level at a number of Devon-based clubs including Kingsbridge Kingfishers, where she swam in her youth. Holly s interest in promoting excellent skills and technique for the betterment of the team is greatly welcomed. Alongside coaching, Holly is a teacher in the Junior Department at Millfield Prep School teaching a range of subjects to Years 3-5.

CLUB CAPTAINS With the increasing demands and the volume of athletes within the Millfield Swimming programme, it is important to have role models and leaders for the younger athletes to look up to. To ensure that the athletes across all squads are catered for, the coaching team have decided to elect two Senior and two Junior captains (both 1 Male, 1 Female). The Senior captains will be in the Upper 6 th and have experience within the program in a performance and philosophical capacity and show an understanding of the day-to-day needs of the athletes. The Junior captains will be in Year 11 and will be selected based on their behaviours and strength of character in order to mentor the younger generation. Captains will be announced in the first week of term. The captains will be responsible for a variety of activities and tasks. These will include but not excluded too: Selecting and motivating the Arena league team (in consultation with coaching staff). Attending a twice-termly meeting with the coaches to discuss any issues with the daily environment of the squad.

Creating a consistent and informative flow of information between the captains and the coaching team. Fulfilling the role of mentor for the senior and junior squads relevant to the role. This could include squad meals, team building, individual mentoring or offering advice and guidance. Help organise the team building trip at the start of year for both the senior and prep school (in consultation with JLM & Helen Gouldby). Offer assistance and advice to new swimmers in order to settle into Millfield life and provide practical help and a listening ear. Captains of Millfield Swimming and representatives of the school are expected to promote the values of the squad in the following ways: Promote a positive culture within the daily training environment. Stay connected with the wider community and be a sound role model to the wider body of the school. Be a sound role model for all pupils in the squad and the squad as a whole. Understand and implement the vision of Millfield swimming. Promote the holistic development of each athlete and support in all areas of school life.

The prep school program is recognised as one of the top clubs in Britain and regularly competed in the Arena League club final. The program is also producing swimmers who are on the England Talent Identification Programme. Competition and Training Millfield Prep regularly turns out winners of National Age group titles, Regional and County level and has consistently won Top Club at both Somerset and Regional level. The swimming programme starts as young as Pre-school and continues through to school year 8. The swimmers compete at all levels of competition from development meets all the way through to the British National Age groups. The squad is a formidable force at the IAPS in both the girls and boys tournament. The ethos at the Prep school is very much geared towards key foundations with emphasis on skills and techniques to establish a strong technical background, which provides the corner stone to a successful senior swimming career. This method prolongs children s involvement in the sport and enables children more opportunity to realise their swimming potential. The swimming program prides itself on giving the young swimmers a foundation of great skills and techniques with a good aerobic base ready for their long swimming journey.

COMPETITIONS (RESIDENTIAL AND NON-RESIDENTIAL) Accommodation Accommodation will only be booked for athletes for term time competitions unless otherwise stated. Any competitions outside of term time will require an individual to secure their own accommodation. Hotel Booking and Cancellation Policy for Away Competitions Given the location of Millfield School, it is often appropriate and necessary for our swimmers to travel significant distances to competitions so as to gain a meaningful and challenging competition experience. In many cases, this will involve staying in hotels adjacent to the relevant competition venue. The following offers the general conditions for hotel stays booked by the Millfield School Swimming Program: 1. Where possible, all accommodation will be booked as twin share to reduce cost. 2. Every effort will be made to room like-aged swimmers together, but cannot be guaranteed. 3. Requests for preferential roommates cannot be guaranteed, but will be considered if submitted in writing along with meet entries. 4. Accommodation will be immediately allocated once meet entries are received. 5. It is the swimmer / parents responsibility to inform the office (in writing / accompanying meet entries) if you DO NOT require accommodation. 6. Accommodation is sourced well in advance of the Meet so as to secure availability and to receive preferential rates, and is therefore subject to the respective hotel cancellation policies and terms. 7. Millfield Swimming requires notice (in writing / ) of intent to cancel a hotel booking 14 DAYS (unless otherwise specifically stated in the event pack sent out by Millfield Swimming) prior to the beginning of any hotel booking, 8. Cancellations made within 14 days will incur billing for the relative amount in full. 9. Costs of any damage to hotel rooms brought about by swimmers will be passed on to parents. 10. Hotel bookings for events in term time are subsidised by Millfield School to 50% of the total cost, and it is this subsidised amount that will appear on your term bill. Information regarding Hotel Bookings for National competitions British National Championships and Swim England Summer Meet (Circa July each year) Swimmers and Parents should book their own accommodation for the National Swimming Championships each year. In most cases, it would be prudent to book hotels so as to arrive at the meet a minimum of one day before your first event. Please give careful consideration as to the day you will leave the meet taking into account progression through heats, semi-finals and finals as well as team relays. The school will offer a credit of 30 per night for hotel bookings during these meets. Requests should be sent (in writing or via ) to the Millfield Swimming office, along with a copy of your hotel receipt for the relevant period. British Championships (Circa March / April each year) At the earliest possible advent, the Millfield Swimming office will notify parents as to which hotel the Millfield Swimming Coaching staff will be staying in for the British Championships each year, so that parents can make a relevant booking at the same hotel for their swimmer and, in some cases, themselves. Please note that

due to the aforementioned stringent conditions set out relating to group hotel bookings and the relative costs associated to this the Millfield Swimming Office will NOT make bookings for swimmers or parents for the British Swimming Championships. The Millfield Swimming coaching staffs are always happy to look after any swimmer at the meet (in terms of supervision, meals, logistics etc). However, it is the considered opinion of the Millfield Coaching Staff that swimmers who are looked after at the meet by a parent or adult guardian have a greater propensity to success as a result of the flexibility that one on one care can afford. Hotel costs for the British Championships are subsidised in the same manner as the National Age and Youth Championships, and as such a credit of 30 per night can be sought in writing via the swimming office with an accompanying receipt for the relevant period.

APPENDIX A UNIFORM AND KIT Millfield Swimming requires pupils to have both school branded kit and specific swimming branded kit. As of 2013 school kit is KUKRI and swimming is TYR. All kit and uniform is available from the school shop on site and will be added to your school bill. Swimmers will be expected to have a TYR tracksuit (jacket and tracksuit bottoms), shorts, t-shirt and bag for external competitions. As part of the Millfield Swimming team, each swimmer will need to ensure they have these items and wear them to the listed competitions. In addition, each swimmer will need to order Millfield Swimming caps, which can be ordered from the swim office. As a final proviso to attending external meets; every swimmer will be expected to compete in a TYR branded costume of their choice. The only exception to this is Millfield School meets, where KUKRI kit must be worn. KUKRI kit is also available from the school shop and will be added to your school bill. In addition, outside of the swimming pool or outside of competition, KUKRI kit must be worn.

APPENDIX D OPPORTUNITY FOR PARENTAL SUPPORT Millfield Swimming have had extraordinary support from parents and supporters of the program over many years. This support has resulted in the program being able to purchase new equipment used to service the team, to improve the aesthetics and functionality of the swimming pool environment and its surrounds and to support touring teams and camps. Should parents wish to offer support to the program, this should be facilitated via The Millfield Foundation. Donations to the foundation are tax deductible in line with our charitable status, and recognition of the donating person / organisation is possible by negotiation. Further details can be sourced from the Millfield School website, or through consultation with the Director of Swimming or Millfield Development Manager Gareth Turnbull (garethturnbull@millfieldschool.com).
