1 DATE: November 13, 2018 REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL FOR WATERPROOFING STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING PROJECT: OWNER: Corbett Pool Renovation Office of the University Engineer NC A&T State University 1601 East Market Street Greensboro, North Carolina BUDGET: $500,000 CLOSING DATE: November 28, 2018 PROJECT DESCRIPTION: North Carolina A&T State University is accepting design proposals for swimming pool located in the Corbett Sports Center. The pool is in need of remedial structural concrete repairs, including remediation of failed waterstops, infilling the diving view port window, replacement of all pool operation equipment, and limited repair of pool deck tile. There will be limited modifications to the pool equipment room to accommodate new equipment. 20 PDC & Mackie Brothers Scope of Work Pool Equipment Room Unable to observe staff going through backwash procedures due to the swimming pool being empty prior to Mackie Brothers mobilization. Review and assess controls, none observed due to the pool being empty. General internal condition of the equipment plumbing piping condition: Piping Narrative: The general condition of the pool equipment plumbing is very poor. The internal examiniation shows internal rusting and scale desposits of iron due to ductile plumbing installed between the swimming pool and the pool equipment recircualtion system. The bolts and nuts that connect the flanges to the piping have deteriorated. 21 Float valve assessment: Float Valve Narrative: The float valve was disassembled. The operation was confirmed. The interior of the float valve is completely rusted and at some point, will require replacement. 23 Narrative: Two large wheeled gate valves were disassembled. There is large amounts of rust, scaling and deterioration. Valve operation is deterred to the extreme condition of the wafer wear from rust. The valve will eventually fail to operate as designed Open the filters: Excluded any additional work such as tank coating, sand replacement, drain plug replacement, anode replacement. 24 Narrative: Interior of the filter tanks metal parts were extremely rusted; the filter sand was crusty and needs to be replaced per the manufacturers recommendations. With hard sand, channeling is to be expected and will reduce the filtration quality. Tank lid gaskets were replaced with new ones. 25 Pump and strainer inspection: Narrative: The interior of the pump and hair and lint strainer were extremely deteriorated, the epoxy coating completely gone. The erosion will continue, reducing the effectiveness of the pump impeller, reducing water flow and contribute to poor water quality. Total replacement recommended. 26 Chlorinator: Narrative: The chlorinators shown are intended to be used with trichlor type of chlorine. This means it contains and UV stabilizer called cynauric acid. With indoor pools that stabilizer does not dissipate. We found no records for testing so the following is speculation based on experience. If the cynauric acid reached levels exceeding 75 ppm then there is an increasing likelihood that some plaster deposits will occur at a microscopic level. If I am right then this has added to the poor appearance of the plaster. There was no evidence of ph adjustment, automatic chemical feed controllers nor supplemental sanitation.
