1 Hi There My first 12 weeks have flown by. It s been great to have the opportunity to meet committee members from a number of our smaller clubs Waihi, Whangamata, Mercury Bay, Coromandel, Thames, Marlin, PioPio and Te Kuiti, and their enthusiasm and commitment to delivering swimming in our region is fantastic. My plan is to meet with representatives from the rest of our Club s over the next few months in the hope they can give me a clear understanding of the support Swimming Waikato can provide to help them deliver this great sport. Working alongside Clive Power in his capacity as Regional Coaching Co-ordinator has provided me with a massive learning opportunity and the extensive knowledge he is sharing with our Coaches and swimmers is a great benefit to our region. In early October, we held a two Combined Squad Coaching days which provided an opportunity for me to get a real insight into the incredible distances that our athletes swim in their training sessions each week. Even our littlies were smashing out some pretty impressive 1 km time trials and managed to finish each training set with a smile on their faces, despite the blizzard like conditions. Daylight savings marks the start of summer. But for many of our swimmers, it means that their day starts in complete darkness again, as they hit the water at numerous pools throughout the region and I d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the fantastic job that our Coaches do in motivating our athletes to turn up day after day. I d also like to take this opportunity to thank our funding partners for sharing our vision of promoting swimming within our community through strong partnerships, participation growth and performance excellence. Included in our October update are details of upcoming events, a bit more information about our Regional High Performance Plan and much more. I hope you enjoy the read. 2 Since starting his role as Regional Coach Co-ordinator with Swimming Waikato in July 2014, Clive Power has been working alongside our Tier 1 and Tier 2 coaches to develop a High Performance Coaching and Competitive Pathway Plan which will form an integral part of the swimming pathway in our region. The Plan will give our top age group athletes a clear understanding of what they need to do to achieve their swimming goals of representing New Zealand in the pool. The Plan also identifies the significant support network our swimmers have in this region as Clive works alongside our talented and dedicated Coaches to ensure the athlete s goals are front of mind and their training plans will help them achieve those goals. The concept of the plan was delivered at two Combined Squad Coaching days, held in early October, where Clive was able to instil a real belief of success in the 50+ swimmers who took part. His lasting message The clock is ticking was a great reminder to any athlete who has set themselves some big swimming goals that their commitment needs to start now. The detailed plan will be available to our swimming community in late October and selection into the training squads will be guaranteed for every swimmer who meets the qualifying times. 3 The annual SportsForce Swim camp was held the weekend of the 10 th 12 th October 2014 in Rotorua. The purpose of the camp is to create an environment that develops network and upskilling opportunities for both swimmers and their coaches which can be taken back to their respective clubs. Open to swimmers from Taumaranui in the south through to Whitianga in the north, 45 young swimmers, aged between 8 and 17, spent two and a half days and two nights living and breathing swimming. Thirteen coaches attended the course from a wide variety of Clubs Mercury Bay, Coromandel, Whangamata, Waihi, Te Aroha, Tokoroa, Huntly, Morrinsville, Te Kuiti, PioPio and Marlin; taking part in four poolside coaching sessions and two coaches debrief/forums. By the end of camp, both coaches and swimmers were exchanging contact details. Everyone that attended was amazing and put in 100% effort. We d like to acknowledge the fantastic job that Sport Waikato s Chris Jolly does each year in organising and running these camps. 4 We re updating our Club Toolbox and developing resources that we hope will assist our volunteers to carry out their roles. Our volunteers are responsible for a variety of roles including coaching our swimmers, administering at swimming meets and running our Clubs and Club Committees. Our Toolbox includes Pathway Brochures which are available for any members of our community who are interested in giving back to our sport. It also includes a generic Strategic Plan template which is able to be adapted by Clubs to suit their development focus. Please give us your feedback on how the Club Toolbox is looking, and what other resources would help make your jobs easier. We ve established ourselves as a registered Police Vetting organization, which means we re able to carry out online police checks on behalf of our swimming clubs. If your Club has been considering establishing a policy around vetting your coaches, particularly in regard to your Learn to Swim programmes, we re more than happy to provide this service on your behalf. Swimming New Zealand continue to roll out database updates and whilst we acknowledge that there is significant upfront work required by our Clubs to ensure the right information is loaded into the database, we can see the real benefits this system will bring as more of the components of the system go live. Ongoing regional training opportunities will be available for club personnel later in the year. We d love it if you could share stories about your swimmers, coaches, officials and volunteers who are doing great things out there in the region. Our Who s Making a Splash website feature is the perfect forum to share these stories so if you know of someone who s doing some great stuff, please through the details. 5 Our Waikato Swim Team performances were outstanding at the recent NZ Short Championships, held in Wellington 2 to 6 September The Waikato team consisted of 44 swimmers (23 female, 21 male), 8 Coaches and 7 Club Managers all great ambassadors for our Region. Here s a brief summary of the top results - Top Relay Performance - Both the Waikato A Female and Male 15 and under 4 x 100m relay teams made the regional finals. The female team produced the relay pinnacle result for our region, taking the silver honours. The team consisted of Claudia Ashby (FFD), Jessica Chapman (ACE), Ariana Aupouri-Kaiwai (STP) and Moana Aupouri-Kaiwai (STP). Top Club Performance - Our region s top club was St Peter s which finished the meet ranked in 9th place closely followed by Fairfield Swimming Club who were ranked 12th. PICTURED LEFT Nikita Howarth after her world record breaking swim at the NZ SC Champs. Fairfield, Thames and Te Awamutu finished with the highest number of points per swimmer. Te Awamutu were particularly impressive, sending only one swimmer and amassing 81 points. Top Individual Performances - A large number of personal bests were recorded in both the morning and afternoon sessions. It was really pleasing to see so many swimmers were able to back up their heat times with faster final times. Waikato was very well represented in the relative age group and gender finals over the five day event. Making the final was part one in many cases, part two was bringing home the medals. In total, 53 medals were won by Waikato Swimmers. Of special note were the following performances: Matthew Stanley (MAT) swam under the qualifying time for the FINA World SC Champs and broke the NZ 200m Backstroke record, winning the gold medal in the process. Nikita Howarth (TEA) broke the World Record for the 100m Fly not once, but twice in the same day. Jesse Reynolds (FFD) broke a total of five New Zealand records. To close, we must reiterate how well the Waikato region swam over the five days. We have an amazing group of National Age Group swimmers, with a great support infrastructure wrapped around them at both family and club level, linked to the region Swimming Waikato. Gareth Fannin Team Manager Private Bag 3091, Hamilton Phone cherie@swimmingwaikato.co.nz

6 In the period 16 July 2014 to 17 September 2014, a massive 63 Waikato Records were broken. That is a huge achievement by our swimmers and is testament to the talent we currently have in our region. Details of the records are available on our website but of special note are the following long standing records that have been broken - Swimmer Event Venue Old Time New Time Date of Previous Record Helena Gasson 19yrs + 200m Fly NZ Short 2: :15.02 July 1983 Helena Gasson 19yrs + 400m IM NZ Short 4: :44.38 July 1983 Helena Gasson 19yrs + 100m Fly NZ Short 1: :01.14 Sept 1983 Gina McCarthy Gina McCarthy Saacha McCormack -Goeth Matt Stanley Helena Gasson 12yrs 100m 12yrs 200m 14yrs 100m 19+Yrs 200m Back 19yrs + 100m 1: :19.22 Aug : :49.49 Aug 1994 NZ Short 1: :16.07 Aug 1994 NZ Short Champs Helena Gasson Open 200m IM NZ Short Champs Sarah Wilson 10 yr 100m 2: :52.87 Sept 1995 NZ Short 1: :10.96 Sept : :14.87 Sept : :29.84 Oct 1996 Helena Gasson 19yrs + 100m IM NZ Short 1: :02.58 March 1997 Gina McCarthy 12yrs 200m IM 2.: :32.57 Aug 1997 Gina McCarthy 12yrs 400m IM 5: :20.13 Nov 1997 Paige Flynn 17yrs 50m Free NZ Short Dec 1997 Paige Flynn 17yrs 100m Free NZ Short Dec 1997 Bradlee Ashby 18yrs 100m IM NZ Short Aug 1998 Helena Gasson 19yrs + 400m Free 4: :18.61 Sept 1999 Helena Gasson 19yrs + 200m IM NZ Short 2: :14.87 Sept1999 Helena Gasson 19yrs + 50m Fly NZ Short Champs 29:14 27:18 Sept 1999 Swimming Waikato would like to acknowledge the support of our local Councils WARMUP QUARTERLY BULLETIN - PAGE 6 - OCTOBER 2014 EDITION
