RUSSIAN BANJA SAUNA The heat of the Russian tradition The traditional Russian sauna. For those who love strong contrasts between hot and cold and love to feel the body regenerated, renewed and invigorated. The tradition of the Russian banja is not only related to its beneficial qualities, but also the culture of relaxing the Russian way. The Russian banja is not simply a room but a true state of mind. Usually the Russian banja has three rooms: one room to sweat (parilka), a room for washing (predbannik) and an entrance room. After sweating, it is common to cool the body outdoors or dive into the icy waters of a river or a lake. In winter, banja participants can roll naked in the snow, or dive into the cut ice of the lake. There is no sauna as well documented as the Russian banya. Information about the Finnish sauna is minimal in comparison. Very early on, the common chronicles mention the banya and, when European journalists swarmed to Russia in the centuries following the Reformation, the Russian bath provided interesting material to be sent home. The Russians thus became well known for their steam baths. In 1914, M. Hartea told the Finnish Museum Society, in Moscow, the interest in the banya is as great as here in Finland. The Russians win us Finns over because of the same great interest in the sauna. One of the first descriptions of the Russian banja is found in the Russian Primary Chronicle of 1113, in the description of the work of a missionary, Andrea.... I saw the land of the Slavs and, while I was there, I noticed their wooden homes for bathing. They heat them to very high temperatures, strip off their clothes and, having oiled their bodies, they take thin reeds with which they whip their bodies. Then they bathe in cold water and come out revitalized... The characteristic of the stove in the banja cabin is the large quantity of stones to handle the large amount of water that is poured continuously to considerably increase the percentage of humidity. 3
Settings Temperature: Humidity: 45% -50% in its original version Preparation of the cabin Air the cabin before switching on Prepare the water bucket and soak the venik at least 30 minutes before the banya Switch on at least 15 minutes prior to treatment Preparation of the client Take off your shoes before entering. Enter barefoot Have a shower and dry the body well, put on a sauna hat (heat protection for the head and eyes) before entering Oil the body with the Bio Oil cream from the Carmenta Banja Kit Enter and lay a natural fibre sheet on the bench It is advised not to enter wearing contact lenses Diet Drink a hot herbal tea (avoid cold drinks) before entering. Do not enter on a totally empty stomach or at the start of the digestive process. Avoid ingestion of animal proteins which take longer to digest; raw fruits and vegetables are preferable. At the end of the treatment, rehydrate the body with a remineralizing drink (herbal tea, fruit or vegetable juice or a not-too-cold beer to avoid congestion) and eat one/two wedges of raw apple to restore the proper balance of sugars, mineral salts and vitamins. Wornings Metal objects or jewelry that if they are not in full contact with the skin tend to heat up and to burn. We recomend not enter with jewelry, watches, etc... Swimsuits traditional not resist high temperature. Get naked or covered only with fabrics that do not melt at high temperatures The bucket of the sauna and the ladle, being wood, They are highly flammable. After the sauna, take them out and prop them ever on the brazier. 4
How to do it 1. Take a shower before entering. dry well the body. 2. Upon entering, put four / five ladles of water (the amount depends on the level of moisture that we want to keep) in the stones. Please note: more moisture you have in the cabin, most high will be the perceived temperature. Banja can reach 40 C more then traditional sauna. 3. first entry: 8-12 minutes and, anyway, stay until you feel the pulse temples. This is the signal that indicates that the body has warmed up sufficiently. 4. On this first entry, start using the venik. There are several ways to massage the body with the venik: shaking, compressions, strokes without pressure, small lashes, rubbing and stretching. The best approach is to try every single technique. With the shaking, you can make the venik float slightly, just above the body and then touch it gently with the tips of the leaves. This creates a flow of air that warms the body starting to prepare it for more intense strokes. With the stroking the venik is run without pressure in a single but wavy movement from the toes to the neck. Grasping the venik always precedes the movement. With the compression the venik is raised up (where the temperature is higher), the heat is collected and then the waist, shoulders, feet and the rest of the body are struck firmly while maintaining the position of compression for 2-3 minutes and, if desired, the free hand can be used to aid the compression to make it more effective and to allow the active ingredients of the plant to penetrate through the skin. This technique is particularly useful for joint and muscle pain. These early techniques can be alternated (carresses and repeated lashes). Then you can unite the compression and lashes, raising the venik high in order to gather the heat from the upper part of the sauna and striking the body two/three times and then leave the venik to rest completely on the skin for 2/3 seconds to allow the active ingredients contained in its leaves to penetrate. 5. Have a cold shower to remove the sweat from the skin, starting with a cold jet to the part of the body farthest from the heart in this sequence: right foot, left foot, right leg, left leg, right arm, left arm, chest and abdomen, back, and lastly, the head. 6. Get out and cool the body immediately and completely. Traditionally, the body is dipped into an icy river or rolled in the snow. Stay as long as necessary in the frigidarium for the body to cool completely, running the ice chips over the skin to facilitate effective vasoconstriction. 7. Second entry: minutes as desired and in any case remain until the temples start to throb. This is the sign that the body has warmed up sufficiently. During this second entry, again with the venik, after a short series of lashes on the skin you can start the rubbing taking the venik by the handle in one hand and hitting the body, place your free hand over it and rub the skin in a circular motion, making sure to keep the venik in full contact with the skin. 8. Lastly, take two veniks and start to stretch the body starting from the legs and reaching the back, as shown in the figure. 9. Have a cold shower to remove the sweat from the skin, starting with a cold jet to the part of the body farthest from the heart in this sequence: right foot, left foot, right leg, left leg, right arm, left arm, chest and abdomen, back, and lastly, the head. 10. Get out and cool the body immediately and completely in the cold zone. Traditionally, the body is dipped into the icy river or roll around in the snow. Stay as long as necessary for the complete cooling of the body, passing the flakes of ice on the skin for facilitate effective vasoconstriction
11. Reach the relax room with a temperature at least 24, in the tradition of the banja It is the first environment, the entrance room where the sauna maister offers beer, tea, herbal teas or other drinks and remains playing cards or simply enjoying the relax in good company. To finish Switch off the sauna and leave the door open. Once the sauna is cool, clean the surfaces and benches with a suitable cleaning product. For saunas with traditional wooden benches, clean the space under the benches thoroughly, making sure that there is no dust even in the most hidden corners (fire risk). Venik - Birch Birch has many beneficial effects on the body. Its diuretic action is said to be due to the presence of flavonoids, especially quercetin and other phenolic compounds, which seem to contribute to acceleration of the formation of urine. Its potassium content also appears to contribute to the diuretic effect. It also has an anti-inflammatory action. It is useful in the prevention of kidney stones and gallstones, edemas of heart failure, in the presence of hypertension, ascites and dizziness but also edemas of the lower extremities caused by venous insufficiency and cellulitis. 6
It is effective for Contraindications Reducing stress Toning the body Increasing sweating with all the purifying benefits Re-activating the immune and lymphatic systems Stimulating the normal processes and bodily functions Positively influencing the nerves and the autonomic nervous system Decreasing pain and is also recommended for those suffering from rheumatism and arthritis. Improving the metabolism by increasing its speed and making weight loss easier Purifying and cleansing the skin Preventing cellulite Stimulating the body s natural defenses Speeding up muscle recovery Facilitating the circulation of blood in the body Regulating blood pressure It is sensible to take precautions and consult a doctor before having a sauna in the case of: Severe cardiovascular or arterial disorders Severe kidney disease Severe circulatory problems Inflammation Tumours Epilepsy Pregnancy In febrile states Children WARNING: it is a very intense sauna. There are no particular contraindications for children, but less time is reccomended than with traditional saunas. Their physical responses are much faster. Children should never be left alone in the cabin and should always be under the supervision of a responsible adult. In saunas with tiered seating levels, children should lie at the lowest level and away from the stove. In according to italian regulation, you cannot promote medical activities in beauty centers.
