3 SEASON Preview State (Nov. 12) to round out their non-conference schedule. Ohio State finished the season at No. 23 in the CSCAA rankings and finished fifth in the Big Ten. Toledo will also travel to Akron (Feb. 4) and face 2010 MAC runner-up and 2009 MAC champion Miami in Oxford (Jan. 29). Toledo will also be participating in several events for the first time, including the third-annual Swimming World Magazine s College Conference Carnival in Rutgers, NJ (Jan ). The Rockets will also send several individuals to the USA Short Course National Championships in Columbus, OH (Dec. 2-4). With a highly competitive schedule, a batch of returning All-MAC swimmers and the addition of several talented freshmen, this year s Rocket swimming and diving team looks ready to pick up right where they left off, seeking their secondstraight MAC title. SPRINTS The Rocket sprinters will be without White, one of their strongest performers throughout the season, but add several key freshmen that will compete for the top spots on the team, including Kirstin Stark, Ellen Dzierzak and Meredith Gibbon. Another important sprinter will be Amanda Thompson, a senior captain who finished second in the 100 fly at the MAC Championships. having some of our freshmen sprinters - Stark, Dzierzack and Gibbon step up, said Hinkleman. Thompson will also play a role in the 50 and 100 free as well as our sprint relays. Sophomores LesLee Winfield (16th in 100 breast at MACs) and Liz Willis are also in the mix for the Rockets. DISTANCE The Rockets once again are loaded with talent in the distance events. Leading the way is senior captain Dyer, who holds every UT record in distance events and recently had the highest finish in school history at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships - finishing 11th in the 800 free event. We have always had a great distance program, and this year it will continue, said Hinkle Schedule man. Along with Heckroth, Smyth and Leichty, who all were named Second-Team All-MAC last season, the Rockets will get help from veterans Kristen Clemmons, Megan Friedli (14th 1650 free at MACs) and Gillian Staudt. BREASTSTROKE The Rockets are led in breaststroke by Laura Lindsay, who won a team-high 19 total events during the regular season in the 100 and 200 breast.

Without Cusack, the group of Noens, Willis and Schwartzkopf will look to perform for the Rockets as underclassmen. We lack experience in this area, but not talent, Hinkleman said. Noens, Willis and Schwartzkopf will have to really step up in both the 100 and 200 back throughout the season and at MACs. All three of these girls are underclassmen so they will have to be prepared for the pressures of being at the top in these events. BREASTSTROKE The Rockets are led in breaststroke by Laura Lindsay, who won a team-high 19 total events during the regular season in the 100 and 200 breast. She also took second in the MAC Championship and only lost two breaststroke events during the regular season. Toledo is also deep in breaststroke with 2010 FirstTeam All-MAC honoree Kelsey Atchison returning along with several strong underclassmen. Laura has a great shot at making the NCAA meet, said Hinkleman. She has been very consisitent and had a great summer season. Atchison was first-team all-mac last year, and she finished top four in both breaststroke events. We have a deep breastroke group with Winfield, Kirsten Smith, Katie Jackson, Weimers, and Gibbon. All of these girls have an opportunity to be big impacts at MACs. BUTTERFLY Once again hopes are high for the group of butterfly swimmers at Toledo. Leading the group is Thompson, who took second at MACs last season. The group also features last year s freshman sensation Kenzie Bagan, junior Laura Benevento and promising incoming freshman Rogers. Thompson is our top sprint flyer, said Hinkleman. She had a great summer season, and competed at her first summer national meet. Bagan comes off an excellent freshman campaign with a 2nd place finish in the 200 fly and 4th in the 100 fly. Rogers should have an immediate impact in the butterfly events. Benevento is someone to look out for to finish top-eight in the MAC Championship meet. INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY Another impressive group will handle IM duties this season, including sophomore Carly Harter, who set a school record in the 400 IM. Harter had an excellent freshmen season and was a MAC champion in the 200 IM and runner up in the 400 IM, said Hinkleman. She has a great chance to make the NCAAs and get a new school record in the 200 IM. Atchison will battle with Carly in the 200 IM, continued Hinkleman. They are great training partners, and it is always a good race between the two. Rachel Johnson qualified for 2012 Olympic Trials in the 400 IM this summer, so she will be a great contender in that event as well. RELAYS Laura Lindsay 4 Coming off a strong performance at the 2010 MAC Championships, the relay group looks to be just as Nikki Schropp strong this year as in past seasons. Returning MAC champions in relays include Lindsay, Thompson, Heckroth, Harter, Atchison and Dyer. Last year at conference we won four out of the five relay events, said Hinkleman. Traditionally, we have always been a strong relay team, and we are looking to continue that tradition. Our goal has always been to get a relay to the NCAA Championship meet, and we have two or three relays that have the opportunity. DIVING Freshman Kristy Richart joins sophomore Nikki Schropp as the lone divers on the roster this season. Hinkleman believes the pair will continue to improve as the season progresses under the guidance of second-year diving coach Matt Guinan. The conference as a whole for diving this year is relatively young, said Guinan. Both Nikki and Kristy have the potential to have a positive impact on the team at MACs this year. After working hard through her first season, Nikki knows what to expect and what she needs to do to be competitive with the other girls in the conference. Kristy is showing a lot of potential for growth and development as a freshman. With continuous hard work throughout the season, she will also be in the position to score points for the team.

Her familiarity with the program and her integral role in leading Toledo to its first MAC Championship last season are just some of the reasons we feel she will be an excellent leader for these young

5 HEAD COACH Liz Hinkleman Liz Hinkleman 1st Year at Toledo Liz Hinkleman enters her first year as the head coach of the Rockets women s swimming and diving program. Hinkleman served as the assistant coach at Toledo for the past two seasons and was a four-year Rocket swimmer from We are very pleased to name Liz Hinkleman as the head women s swimming and diving coach at the University of Toledo, said O Brien. Liz has been a part of this program both as a four-year student-athlete and as an assistant coach for the past two seasons. Her familiarity with the program and her integral role in leading Toledo to its first MAC Championship last season are just some of the reasons we feel she will be an excellent leader for these young women. Liz has a superb rapport with the student-athletes. The fact that she was an exceptional swimmer at Toledo as a student-athlete is an added bonus. Above all, Liz is an outstanding teacher and leader, which she has demonstrated over the past two seasons. I think Liz is the perfect choice to lead our women s swimming and diving program. As an assistant with Toledo, Hinkleman helped former coach Lars Jorgensen lead the Rockets to their first Mid-American Conference title in program history in Under her guidance, several UT swimmers have qualified for the USA National Championships and World Championship Trials, and Toledo also had its first qualifier for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, Kylie Gamelier. Last season alone, 10 Rockets captured All-MAC honors and seven were named Academic All-MAC, and returning senior Jacy Dyer was named MAC Co-Swimmer of the Year. I have been a part of the swimming and diving program for the past six years, and I am excited for the future of this program, said Hinkleman. I am looking forward to leading the team to continued success and raising the program to an even higher level. I would like to thank Mike O Brien, Senior Associate Athletics Director Kelly Andrews and Deputy Athletic Director Mike Karabin for giving me this opportunity. Hinkleman swam for UT from , and was a three-time MAC champion and a member of the 2008 squad that finished second in the MAC, the best showing in school history prior to last season. As a member of the 200 freestyle relay team, she helped set school and conference records while winning the event at the MAC Championships three times. Hinkleman also twice captained the Rockets, earning the team s Captain s Award in I know the University and Athletic Department well and I feel the transition from assistant to head coach will be relatively smooth, Hinkleman said. The girls on the team have responded well to all the changes made over the last month. Prior to returning to coach at her alma mater, Hinkleman served as the assistant swim coach at Lewis University in Chicago in She also served as the coach for a club team at Lewis, the Academy Bullets. She returned to Toledo in January of 2009 as the assistant coach. Hinkleman takes over the program from Jorgensen, who recently resigned to take an assistant coaching position with his alma mater, the University of Tennessee. Jorgensen was the head coach for six seasons and posted a career meet record of (.700). Jorgensen helped to revive the program, leading the team to top-three finishes in each of the last three seasons, including the program s first MAC title in Hinkleman served as Jorgensen s assistant coach the past two seasons, during which the Rockets finished third and first, respectively, at the MAC Championships. We have an impressive team this year including 11 freshmen and eight returning All-MAC selections, said Hinkleman. 6 ASSISTANT COACHES matt Guinan Diving Coach 2nd Year at Toledo After enjoying a successful collegiate career, Matt Guinan enters his second season as the diving coach at Toledo. Last season, Guinan helped guide Toledo to its first MAC Championship. Guinan was an All-MAC diver in both 2008 and 2009 for Eastern Michigan who also earned Academic All-MAC recognition. He finished in the top-three in the MAC Championships in both his junior and senior seasons. In high school, Guinan was an All-American performer. He has worked as a competitive club diving coach in both Webster, NY and Ypsilanti, MI. The Victor, NY native graduated with a degree in exercise science and is pursuing his Master s degree in kinesiology. 6 Ashley Cusack Student Manager Ashley Cusack is in her first year as a student manager with the Rockets after a successful career in the pool. The Willow Spring, IL native assists the Rockets in all aspects of the program, including organizing practices and recording times. Cusack continues with Toledo after a successful career in which she lettered all four years in swimming and helped Toledo to its first MAC Championship. In last season s championship effort, Cusack was a member of the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay championship teams and took third place in the 200 backstroke. She also earned second-team All-MAC honors. Cusack is a currently a fifth-year senior majoring in education.
