2 Welcome to the Brier Creek Swim Team Barracudas! The Swim Team program provides your child with a fun, social, and challenging summer experience. It is a time to encourage friendships and to provide a fun and social environment for the parents as well. This Handbook will provide you with information needed to enhance the swim team experience for your children and family. Please take the time to review the materials enclosed and if you have any questions please feel free to contact us. The Development or Practice Team provides an opportunity for children who may not meet the full aquatic and safety requirements of the Swim Team, an opportunity to strengthen their basic swimming techniques while enjoying a swim team experience. The Brier Creek Barracudas Swim Team competes in the Tarheel Swimming Association (TSA), Northern League. This year our team is in Division 3 and ranked 10th out of 37 teams in the Northern Division. There are six dual swim meets held on Tuesday evenings in June and July, with a TSA Championship Meet at the end of the season. Parent volunteers are the core of a successful swim meet and swim season. Each family must volunteer at meets, and no experience is necessary. If you have any questions, please contact Coach Pat or Eric Kaiser (TSA Rep) with your questions. There will be a refresher on the different parent volunteer positions at this season s Mock Practice Meet on June 5th, 5:45pm at the pool Thanks again for your time and support in making the Barracuda Swim Team a success! 6 There are six dual meets on Tuesday evenings, (3-Home, 3-Away) and one TSA Championship Meet. Directions to Away swim meets: See addresses in the table below, or go to the TSA website click on Schedule, then click on the Name of the Team we are competing against in the Northern league for directions. We are mindful that many swimmers must be up for school the next morning after our swim meets. We assemble our meets with only 2 heats (races) per event, with 3 heats in the larger age groups. Swimmers who are in the meets will be in 2-3 races per meet. Limiting the heats allows us to complete the meets in a timely manner, allowing swimmers and parents to arrive home at a reasonable hour. Please try to schedule vacations around swim meets. If you know in advance your swimmer will miss a meet please notify the coach as soon as you know, as this allows the X-Files to be set up with the swimmers who will be in attendance. They should feel very snug when your swimmer tries it on! REMEMBER, the suits ALL stretch out when exposed to the chlorinated water and then we end up with a baggy, sagging suit that causes a lot of drag and is very slow in the water. SNUG: GIRLS -The best guide is how much give is in the shoulder strap. No gapping across the chest of the suit. It should be quite snug when it is brand new, and can only pull straps off shoulder approx. 1.5 inches. BOYS - It should be snug enough to take a few minutes to slide up each leg, like a very tight pair of stockings, when the suit is brand new.

Swim Team Volunteer Positions Parents, your assistance is critical to a successful swim season! All families are encouraged to volunteer at any swim meets that their swimmers participate in. We are expected to provide volunteer Timers and Stroke and Turn judges for the Championship Meet as well. Swim Meet Volunteer Opportunities All volunteer positions are listed below and the duties associated with each have been detailed to provide you with information so that you can choose positions. You will always have guidance in each and every position. Starter/Announcer - Furnished by the home team. The Starter has complete control of swimmers delivered to the starting blocks by the clerk of the course. Uses the commands "step up" (or "step in the water" for backstroke), "Timers and judges ready", announce the distance and stroke or relay event, "Take your mark," press the starting device button. This position remains stationary at the starting end of the pool. (1 adult per meet must attend pre-season training) New Volunteer Coordinator - This person will fill the volunteer spots needed for each home and away meet by sending out s to parents requesting their help for the different positions. Serves as focal point before and during meets by ensuring all positions are filled by volunteers. Clerk of Course Organize and line-up our swimmers in the order that they swim using the blue or pink event sheets for the main event or the meet entry sheet from the coach for all following heats. For the main heat, give blue or pink event sheets to the runner before the event and swimmers are called to take your mark. The announcer calls for each gender/ age group for each event to report to the Clerk of Course. You will get to meet all the swimmers and give them words of encouragement as they line up to swim. (2 Adults per meet) Meet Check-In Contact - Serve as the check in person for swimmers to confirm their arrival and to write swimmer s number on their arm. Arm numbers for AGES 11 and under. Will also have the X Files meet entry sheet. (2 adults per meet)

11 Ribbon Writer - Records the swimmer's name, time and event on the back of each place ribbon. You will receive the results on the blue or pink main event sheets after the scorer has recorded the necessary information. You will have a supply of ribbons, a roster for each team and you sit at the ribbon table. A volunteer or coach will pass them out at the meet or the next practice. (2-3 adults per meet) Ribbon Hand Out Hand out ribbons, awarded to swimmers, during the meet. Hand out participant ribbons to swimmers in heats after the Main Heat as they finish. (2-3 adults per meet) Place Judge - Observes for the finish order of the point scoring heats (main events) ONLY. You will communicate the finish results to the recorder. First place judge also takes the time of fastest swimmer in each race and reports it to Recorder. Each team supplies three judges at each meet. (3 adults per meet) Recorder - Completes blue or pink event sheets by recording the order of finish according to each place judge. (1 adult per meet) Runner - Takes blue or pink event sheets from the Recorder and disqualification sheets from Stroke and Turn judges and carries them to the scorer's table. The runner must deliver the sheets directly to the scorer's table and not allow coaches or other interested parties to see them in transit. This is a mobile position (wear comfortable shoes). (2 adults per meet) Stroke and Turn Judge - Observes the main event swimmers looking for disqualifying motions. These judges must have a thorough knowledge of the proper stroke, turn and finish techniques and know what to look for and disqualify swimmers in point-scoring events who commit violations. Other heats of the events are not judged. This person is required to attend a TSA two-hour class, held on a date in May. Each team provides one judge per meet. You will be standing on the side of the pool along the pools edge. You will be invited to a review session with the coach before the first meet. (1- judge per meet. Can split the meet with another judge) Timer- For all main heats, you will take the time of all swims in your lane with a stopwatch provided by BCCC. You start the watch at the sound of the starter signal, and stop it when any part of the swimmer touches the wall at the finish. Then, record the time after the swim on provided swimmers entry list. You will be moving from one end of the pool to the other depending on the age group so wear comfortable shoes. *You may substitute with another family member and each only time for half the meet, or switch every stroke. (1 timer is needed for each of our lanes for the swim meet) Age Group Parent (Kid Pusher) - Supervises an age group of boys or girls during the meet and delivers swimmers to the Clerk of Course area, when it is time for swimmer s events. You will be responsible for making sure all swimmers in your group have their swimmer number printed on the arm where it will be visible to the timers. (2-3 for each age group per meet) Four Age Groups: 6 & under, 7 & 8 yr. olds, 9 & 10 yr. olds, and 11 & older. Scorer - Keeps a running total of points earned by each team. You will work with the other team's Scorer. You will receive results for each main event and give 5 points to first place, 3 points to second, and 1point to third (relays receive 5 points for first place only). You will write the times down on the preprinted scoring sheet that is easy to understand. You will be seated at the scoring table. A sheet explaining scoring will be available at each meet. (2 adults per meet) Volunteer Positions for the Season: Meet Director Assures all meet positions are filled for home meets and serves as focal point for operational issues before, during and after meets. A familiarization of swim meet procedures would be helpful, but not required. Training will be made available prior to the first meet. (TSA Rep) Volunteer Coordinator Ensures all volunteer positions are filled prior to each of the six swim meets. (1 adult) Coach Asst: Makes all entry changes thru out the progress of the meet, to comply with TSA rules, using pink and blue entry slips to make changes to meet entries of swimmers.
