1 ANDOVER SHARKS SWIM & DIVE TEAM 2010 Welcome to the Andover Sharks Swim & Dive Team! We are a non-profit self-sufficient team who serves skilled and novice swimmers and divers from the Lexington area and members of the Andover Golf and Country Club. Please visit for consistent updates as our season moves along. Please sign up on the website or check for updates. GOALS Our team s philosophy is to have children enjoy organized swimming and diving summer programs. Swimmers and divers will learn skills that are age appropriate and required for a successful swim and dive team. Stroke mechanics and diving techniques will be taught during practices. Swimmers will compete in a fun instructional manner. Team Spirit and fun are key components of the Andover Sharks. ABILITY LEVELS Andover Sharks swimming groups: 6 and under 8 and under 10 and under 12 and over 6 and Under The 6 and under group will have a 45 minute practice five times a week. Its main goals are to help children become comfortable in the water and to be able to swim a full length of the pool. This age group is not required to compete during swim meets. Only swimmers who are capable of swimming 25 yards will be encouraged to enter a swim meet. First time swimmers must be able to tread water and/or swim unassisted to become a member of the swim team. Private lessons given by the coaches are available to children. The coaches determine the swim lesson length and fee. 8 and Under Swimmers will learn basic swimming skills. Regulation strokes, starts and techniques will be taught to this group. The main goal for this group is to have swimmers compete in a swim meet and understand swimming rules. This group will practice five times a week. Swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards unassisted. 10 and Under In addition to skills taught in the 8 and under group, swimmers will be encouraged to gain swimming endurance during regular practices. Skills, rules and regulations will be reinforced. Swimmers will be able to follow swimming sets that are required during swimming practices. Practices will be five times a week.

2 12 and Over Swim skills will be reinforced during practices. Swimmers will be expected to participate in swim meets. Endurance as well as stroke mechanics will be emphasized during practices. This group will practice five times a week. Swimmers 15 years and older will not have to pay the swim team s initiation fee. Other incentives will be rewarded to swimmers who participate in all swim meets, conference and/or bring friends to join our team. Diving Levels All swimmers are encouraged and welcome to participate on the dive team. You do not need to know how to dive to participate. However, it is required that you are comfortable in the deep end and can swim to the ladder independently. We will offer a beginner class at 8:00ARE M-T-TH-F and 9:00AM on Wednesdays. You are not required to dive in meets until you feel comfortable wit the required dives. The coach will determine at what point you are ready to compete and or move to the Dive Team Practice. Dive team practice will be from 11:00-12:00 on weekdays. This practice is for those divers who have participated on a dive team in the past or have demonstrated their abilities to the Coach. All divers on the dive team are expected to compete in meets. Practice Times Practices will start the weekday after Memorial Day Holiday. Due to public schools being in to June we will have some night practices. This information will be sent out via and posted on the Andover website. 8:00-8:30 Beginning Diving 8:45-9:45 7 and 8 Groups 9:45-10:45 9 and over groups 11:00-12:00 Dive Team Practice 10:45-11:30 6 and under in the shallow end Wednesday 10:00-11:30 All Groups Wednesday 9:00 AM Dive Wednesday practices will be geared to work on starts, turns and regulation strokes to get ready for the swim meet. Swim Meets

3 Swimmers who are able to swim 25 yards will be encouraged to participate in swim meets. All competition level swimmers will be entered in meets. Parents are responsible for notifying the coaches when swimmers are not going to be able to attend a meet. Meets are scheduled on Wednesdays beginning on or after June 1 st. The summer swimming season lasts eight weeks. The last scheduled meet is the Central Kentucky Swimming Conference, CKSC, in which all swimmers are expected to participate during the second week of July. The Andover Swim and Dive team must pay a fee per swimmer to be entered into the CKSC Conference in July. Any swimmer or diver that does not show up to participate and the coach was NOT notified will reimburse the team for the entry fee. This amount will be charged to your Andover Country Club account. We encourage all families to be present at all meets and to try to refrain from scheduling vacations during this swim period. Meet Information Warm ups for the home team for diving begin at 2PM. The visiting team will begin at 2:30PM. The dive meet will start at 3PM>. Volunteers needed for Home Dive Meets: Set up- 2 people Judges positions on pool 3 Dive table workers Announcer 2 Judges (1 away) Heat Sheets & Merchandise sales will begin at 4PM for home meets only. Heat Sheet volunteer will sell the heat sheets and make sure the visiting team has the appropriate number of heat sheets for their team. Swim Meet: Warm ups begin at 4:15PM for the Home Team and 4:45 for the visiting team. Meet begins at 5:30PM Workers check in and swimmer check in table (Home and Away Meets) All workers are to check in with the volunteer table. Workers will be called at 4:45 to computer table to hand out worker equipment and answer questions.

4 Each swimmer is to check in with the coach. A second volunteer will notify each age parent and coach to which swimmer not show by 5 PM. Relays will be adjusted at that time. Description of Swim Team Positions and Volunteer Expectations Parent and children entered into a swim meet must work 3 jobs per swimmer, maximum 6 jobs. Team Roster provided before 1 st swim meet so parents can find their own replacement for a volunteer if necessary. A parent unable to meet work requirements will be charged $ 30 per session missed on their Andover Country Club account. 5 Dive Judge/Table Workers Record and multiplayer Dive Judge must attend the dive clinic prior to participating as a judge. Heat Sheet & Merchandise Print Heat Sheets and sell at 4PM to both teams. Heat sheet volunteer will make sure visiting team has appropriate number of copies for their team. Set up & Take Down 2 persons in charge for setting up at 2PM and clean up after meet. Age Group Parents each age group parent will be assigned a group under the age of 10 to organize and line up swimmers behind the block. These age group parents will be assigned an area to keep the kids (baby pool during home meets) so they know when they swim. If a parent decides to keep their child with them and not in the designated area with their age group parent then it is the parent s responsibility to get their child to the swim block. Timer- Stands at the end of assigned lane and times swimmers wit the stopwatch provided. Recorder Stands at the end of assigned lane and records name, time and event of each race on Heat Score Card provided. Runner Takes Heat Sheet Score Card from recorder at 3 lanes after each race and runs them to the ribbon/computer table. Ribbons Distributes ribbons for 2 nd, 4 th, and 6 th place at the end of the lane after the finish judge calls the race. Ribbons can be picked up at the volunteer/computer table prior to the start of the meet. Wipe Board Recorder records the finishing place after the Finish Judge yells them out. Stroke & Turn After attending a Stroke & Turn Clinic then you are eligible to judge the strokes of the swimmers at the meets.

6 Finish Judge Calls the Race Finish Recorder Records the Finish Starter Announces the meet Computer enters the data of the meet, prepares the heat sheets and maintains swimmer database. Water Hands out water to the volunteers during the meet. Team Suits & Caps The swim team suit can be purchased at Pannell Swim Shop. It is located on the corner of Nicholasville Road and Man O War behind the super Wal-Mart. Swim team shirts will be free to all swimmers who sign up for the swim team. In order to receive the t-shirt please makes sure you are signed up by May 1 st. We will have new suits this year and encourage all swimmers to buy them so we look like a team. In the event you purchased one last year and can utilize it that would be fine.
