1 A HISTORY OF THE MANLY MASTERS SWIMMING CLUB Established 1975 The Third Decade Compiled by: Ted Samojlowicz

2 Club History - The Third Decade ( ) 2000 Manly club members, (Kathy Langthorne, Sue Kearney, Judy Burke, Judy Saunders, Darrin Jones, Bill Harris and Stuart Somerville), who also are members of local surf clubs compete and win medals in the Masters section of the World Surf Championships held on Manly Beach in March. Manly wins the STATE LONG COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS Carnival held at the Blacktown pool (31st March to 2nd April). A hat-trick of wins for Manly - the clubs third overall point score win in a row. In addition the club finish 2nd in the averages. The 320+ relay team of [Terry Kelly, Jack Winters, Stuart Somerville and Jamie Jenkins], break the State 4x50m Medley and Freestyle records. New State records were set by Jamie Jenkins in the 50m, 100m and 200m Backstroke, and by Ian Spence in the 200m Butterfly Kathy Langthorne broke the World, National and State records in the 400m Freestyle. Stuart Somerville, Jack Winters, Jamie Jenkins, Terry Kelly The occasion was celebrated in grand style (Karaoke), with members showing that they were multi-talented being able to perform On Stage with equal expertise as in the pool. 3 Club History - The Third Decade ( ) 2000 NATIONAL TITLES are held on the April in Gladstone Queensland. It was a fitting way to celebrate the 25th year of AUSSI. The weather was not kind, rain for the opening ceremony and as the day grew long the breeze became cooler, but it did not dampen the spirit of the swimmers or performances as their were 17 National records broken. A small team of 5 swimmers [Stuart Somerville, Barry Barker, Liz Wallis, Jan Allport and Phyllis Ward, represent Manly and manage to come 15th out of 85 clubs and are the best performed of the NSW clubs. Liz Wallis and Stuart Somerville win their respective age groups. 2nd places to; Jan Allport and Liz Wallis Keeping warm Poolside: 3rd place to: Stuart Somerville The 320+ Relay Team finishes 2nd in the Medley and 3rd in the Freestyle At the STATE SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS meet held in August at Toronto. There were 329 entrants from 28 clubs. The 46 Manly competitors win The Club Championship Point score Trophy (for the 4th year in a row) and finish 2nd in the average points score. The Gordon Cozins Trophy for the most Relay points. The Harry Fowler Trophy for the best performance by a relay team of 200 years or more.the 240+ Men s relay team of (Steve Lamy, Bill Harris, Tony Goodwin and David Lawler), break the old record by seconds. 4 Club History - The Third Decade ( ) 2000 Another side to the Short Course Weekend. The Nepalese Warners Bay Motel proprietors advised they would have Entertainment for the club s Saturday night dinner, later describing it as a Japanese Banquet or Barbeque. The hungry Manly hordes descended on the dining room intent initially on ghat marvelous four letter word FOOD. The Entertainment was a Wow! Lashings of good food though some turned up on the walls, the floor and decorated clothing, floor and tablecloths. The 3 chefs in the middle of their cooking tops ie their bear-pits cooking up the food surrounded by the hungry ones. They are magicians with food, to say the least. First came the catch the omelettes-to-be ie the raw eggs in a small bowl. Quite hilarious a process with some spot on and skillfully caught whilst some other were well spotted on with failed attempts. This was followed by flying fried rice and other Japanese parcels of food. No one starved through this quaint serving method and it quickened the reflexes remarkably. 5 Club History - The Third Decade ( ) 2000 The VIII FINA WORLD MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS are held in Munich, Germany 29th July to 4th August Manly is represented by Katherine Ahern-Sharpe (35-39Yrs) and she places 23rd - 100m and 31st - 200m Breastroke; 68th - 50m Butterfly events. Shane Gould returns to Munich were she swam in the 1972 Olympics and participates at these games swimming and winning both her events - the 100m and 400m Freestyle. Club Name Change: Club name changed to Manly Masters Swimming Club as the State Body is to remove the reference to AUSSI in favor of the word Masters. Civic Awards: David Lawler is awarded an OAM in the Australia Days Honors Jack Winters and Stuart Somerville OAM receive Community Service Awards Manly Club Carnival - Swansong to Harbord Diggers Pool Manly Carnival Meet (Long Distance Short Course) held for the last time at Harbord Diggers Pool. Oceania One-Hour Championship Stephen Lamy participates in the Oceania One-Hour Championship and finishes in 1st place. Sporting Highlight of the Year Sydney Olympics. The worlds best athletes gather in Sydney to take part in the Olympics. Gillian Chapman and Semone Spence, had the honour and glory of running and carrying the Olympic Flame.
