2 Course Description: Intermediate swimming is designed to prepare students in the side stroke, breast stroke, American front crawl, elementary back stroke, & the back crawl for the American Red Cross Intermediate & Swimmer requirements. Emphasis is place on refining the skills of the above strokes. There will be instruction on floating, turns, treading water, rescues skills, diving & endurance swimming. Swim the American front crawl in a smooth coordinated manner for 50 yards B. Swim the breast stroke in a smooth coordinated manner for 50 yards C. Swim the elementary back stroke in a smooth coordinated manner for 50 yards D. Swim the side stroke in a smooth coordinated manner for 50 yards E. Swim the back crawl stroke in a smooth coordinated manner for 50 yards 2
3 F. Survival float for 15 minutes G. Back float for 15 minutes H. Scull on the back I. Turns (front, side & back) J. Tread water for 10 minutes K. Underwater swim for 15 yards L. Utilize personal floatation devices (PFD s) M. Perform reaching extension rescues N. Demonstrate effective rescue breathing (artificial respiration) O. Demonstrate surface dives (pike, tuck, feet-first) P. Be able to discuss & practice safety skills Q. Swim continuous for 30 minutes, utilizing a variety of swimming strokes Course Outline or Schedule: Schedule is subject to change. Any changes will be announced in class. Week One: A. Take resting heart rate B. Review & practice swimming strokes 1. Front crawl 2. Back crawl C. Warm up flutter leg kicks on prone & supine D. Continuous swim 3 minutes (twice) with 2 minute rest between E..Take resting heart rate E. Leg kicks warm up on prone & supine F. Review & critique the following swimming strokes: 1. Front crawl 2. Back crawl G. Continuous swim 4 minutes (2 sessions) with 2 minute rest between H. Take heart rate immediately following each session I. Take resting heart rate J. Flutter kick front & back warm up with kick board K. Prone glide with flutter kick 3
4 L. Back glide with flutter kick M. Critique front & back crawl strokes N. Continuous swim 5 minutes O. Take heart rate immediately Week Two: A. Take resting heart rate B. Elementary back stroke kick on deck & in water C. Demonstrate arms & legs coordinated elementary back stroke D. Practice elementary back stroke E. Front turns F. Combine front turns with front crawl G. Continuous swim (2 sessions) 7 minutes & 5 minutes with 2 minute rest between H. Take heart rate immediately following each session I. Take resting heart rate K. Elementary back stroke kick in water L. Review coordinated elementary back stroke M. Review front crawl combined with front turns N. Continuous swim (2 sessions) 7 minutes & 6 minutes with 2 minute rest between O. Take heart rate immediately following each session P. Take resting heart rate Q. Leg warm up on flutter kick on prone, supine & kick for elementary back stroke R. Breast stroke kick S. Breast stroke arm pull, breathing & glide T. Practice & critique breast stroke U. Review: Back crawl, front crawl, & elementary back stroke V. Continuous swim (2 sessions) using all three strokes for 10 minutes & 7 minutes, with a 3 minute rest between sessions W. Take heart rate immediately after each session Week Three: A. Take resting heart rate 4
5 B. Leg warm up: breast stroke kick, elementary back stroke kick & front & back crawl flutter kick C. Review the following strokes: 1. Front Crawl 2. Elementary back stroke 3. Back crawl D. Continuous swim ( 2 sessions) 12 minutes & 7 minutes with a 3 minute rest between each session E. Take heart rate immediately after each session F. Take resting heart rate G. Target heart rate individual application H. Kick warm up (breast stroke, front crawl, back crawl, elementary back stroke I. Back float 5 minutes J. Tread water 5 minutes K. Continuous swim (2 sessions) 15 minutes & 8 minutes with a 3 minute rest between each session L. Take heart rate immediately after each session M. Take resting heart rate N. Rescue breathing on deck/partners O. Review target heart rate individual application P. Survival float Q. Review back float R. Skill tests: front & back crawl S. Continuous swim 18 minutes T. Take heart rate immediately following continuous swim Week Four: A. Take resting heart rate B. Review rescue breathing/partners C. Review survival floating D. Skill test: elementary back stroke & breast stroke E. Continuous swim 20 minutes 5

Demonstrate coordinated arms & scissor kick for side stroke K. Practice side stroke L. Review back & survival floats M. Review treading water with floats N. Swim & critique the front & back crawl strokes, breast stroke, & elementary back stroke O. Continuous swim 23 minutes P. Take heart rate immediately after continuous swim Q. Take resting heart rate R. Reaching extension rescues, (partner practice) S. Swim: front crawl, breast stroke, elementary back stroke & back crawl 50 yards T. Continuous swim 25 minutes U. Take heart rate immediately after continuous swim Week Five: A. Review reaching extension rescues (partners) B. PFD types C. Warm up scissor kick with kick board D. Review side stroke E. Review & swim 50 yards the front crawl stroke, elementary back stroke, breast stroke, & back crawl F. Continuous swim 28 minutes G. Take heart rate immediately after continuous swim H. Basic dive from deck I. Surface dives in water J. Review water safety rules K. Skill test: Side stroke, front crawl, back crawl, breast, & side stroke L. Continuous swim 30 minutes M. Take heart rate immediately after continuous swim 6

Review for final exam Written final exam as scheduled Course Grading Information: A. Skill tests on the following swimming strokes: (Valued at 70%) 1. American front crawl 2. Breast stroke 3. Side stroke 4. Back crawl 5. Elementary backstroke B. All other skills are on a check off basis (pass/fail) C. Written final exam (valued at 30%) Late Work, Attendance, and Make Up Work Policies: All make up work will be considered on a case by case basis by permission of the instructor Student Behavioral Expectations or Conduct Policy: Students are expected to maintain classroom decorum that includes respect for other students and the instructor, prompt & regular attendance, and an attitude that seeks to take full advantage of the education opportunity.
