3 ABOUT TEAM SINGAPORE Team Singapore is a shared identity for all Singaporeans, where sport is the national language. It represents the unique connection between our athletes and every other Singaporean young or old, as they embark on a sporting journey as one. Team Singapore is one big family inspiring one another through sport. It is a relationship that extends beyond the sporting fraternity, and beyond the major Games. Team Singapore is about living better lives as we embody values inherent in sport: a winning spirit, an appreciation for teamwork, a commitment to purpose, the importance of ethical behaviour and a love for our country. Team Singapore

5 RAJA SINGH Raja Singh has always been an athletic and sporty individual. At a young age, he represented his primary and secondary schools in athletic events; when he joined the SAF Boy s School at the age of 16, he joined the rugby team; and even when he was enlisted into the Singapore Armed Forces as a commando, his love for sports led him to the boxing team, where he eventually became a coach for his fellow soldiers. Unfortunately, his athletic and career aspirations had to come to a screeching halt due to an accident that left him wheelchair bound. The accident occurred on 2 July, Due to the nature and physical requirements of being an SAF Commando, Raja had to be transferred to another department where he could fulfill administrative responsibilities instead. His body could no longer handle the intensive physical tasks that a commando has to accomplish, but unsurprisingly to the people who knew him, his spirit was not weakened. He still had an intense love for sports, and it was this passion that led him to pick up wheelchair sports. Within three years of the accident, Raja was selected to represent Singapore at the 1986 Far East and South Pacific (FESPIC) Games for the Disabled in Indonesia, which at the time was the largest multi-sports games in the Asian and South Pacific region. He came back home with two Silver and two Bronze medals from the 100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m events. In 1989, he returned back to the FESPIC Games in Japan and won 4 Gold and 3 Silver medals in the 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, Relay 4x100m, 4x200m, and 4x400m events. By 1994, Raja had become a multi-gold medalist and a paralympian. He took part in the 1988 Seoul Paralympics and the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics. He was also bestowed the honor of being the Chef De Mission for the 2009 ASEAN Para Games that was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In 2009, in an effort to help nurture future para athletes, Raja joined the Singapore Disability Sports Council and served as a member in the Executive Board until Since 2014, he has been serving as the Vice President of SDSC and he continues to inspire other athletes with his infectious passion for competitive sports.
