1 NEWSLETTER 07/2014 ITTF URC Referee group Dear Friends, An excellent World Championships in Tokyo finished two months ago and we are all engaged already in the next events. Attached we are sending you the latest information taking into account also the discussions and results achieved during the WTTC IR conference The invitations for IR conference in Asia and Europe have been sent to your associations and for Beijing the deadline for nomination passed already. Everyone who informed me via that she/he will attend the conference in Beijing is also nominated by her/his association. 45 referees will attend the conference in Beijing. All referees coming to the IR conference in Beijing should also bring their sports equipment (table tennis equipment) to this conference. We are planning to have the IR conference in Latin America in the first half of This conference in 2015 of course will also be valid for the requirement one conference out of two consecutive IR conferences. You will receive more information later this year about the conference in Latin America.

2 2. Number of Match Officials All your referee reports have been evaluated between May 2013 and May 2014 and there was a range between 2,06 and 6,5 umpires per table. According to your rating a ratio of 3,3 and more is good and 2,8-3,2 is ok. Using a ratio of 3,5 showed that only 10 out of 32 events fulfilled this requirement With a ratio of 3,0 per table 21 out of 32 fulfilled it. It was obvious that only a few tournaments could find enough umpires to have a ratio of 3,5 umpires per table. Therefore URC and CM decided to include in the Directives for Match Officials following minimum number of Officials: World Championships: 4 per table +4 (no change) Major Tournaments (Super Series): 3,5 per table +4 (no change) ITTF Sanctioned Events: 3 per table + 4 If it is less than 3 per table, the referee can decide to work without assistant umpire 3. Hand Signals 7 additional hand signals for illegal services (to explain the reason) will be included in the HMO and introduced on 1 Sep The new hand signal will be available on URC website from 1 Aug 2014 onwards and will also be included in the AUT course. 4. Referees Tool Box We are always working on all documents, which have to be used by referees, and all referees are asked to use these standardised documents. They are published on the ITTF website (URC Tool Box). Please download these documents before your event as this guarantees that you have the latest version of all documents. Please also ensure that you download the latest version of the LARC available from the equipment page.

3 5. Racket Control/Call Area Workflow The workflow has been updated taking into account the results of Tokyo: 5.1. Use of ITTF equipment in Racket Control Centre: In the Racket Control Centre only electronic equipment delivered and approved by the ITTF must be used. Equipment from associations, organisers or private parties may not be used in the Racket Control Centre for official racket control. This equipment can be used in the Call Area as a support for the referee. Please be aware of the fact that in the referee report in the file racket control only failures arising from an official racket control using ITTF equipment is to be registered. Other failures will be registered in the referee report in the file Log Ball selection amendment passed in Tokyo: Wherever possible players shall be given the opportunity to choose one or more balls before coming to the playing area and the match shall be played with the ball chosen by the players. This becomes effective from 1 September Team match procedure racket testing between individual matches Taking into account the experience in Tokyo the procedure has been updated: If the racket was not tested before the match, the assistant umpire brings the racket after the match to the call area/racket Control and the player can pick up the racket from this place. During a team match the assistant umpire should not wait for the result of the racket testing in an after match test, but immediately returns to the field of play. Detailed description of the procedure is available in the workflow.

4 6. Advanced Referee Project In November 2011 the 1 st Advanced Referee Project started and the candidates and an expert group worked hard to develop a curriculum and standards for referees. In March 2014 all candidates had their final written exam and interview. At the same time a Continental Group will be established to support future candidates for the Advanced Referee Project. The candidates for this group will also be announced in the fourth quarter of this year.
