2 2 EUROPEAN MASTERS EUROPEAN MASTERS 3 ESF MASTERS COMMITTEE Chairman Pavel Sladecek Director Alan Hathway Committee Members Keynote Speech Jean-Marc Fraipont Claudio Hassler The Masters Committee comprised Pavel Sladecek (Chairman), Alan Hathway (Director), Alicja Kulp, Jean- Marc Fraipont, Claudio Hassler, Martin Wren and Danilo del Tufo can celebrate one of the most successful years regarding events number and quality as far as a new ranking system. The committee managed and co-ordinated a calendar of 12 Masters Circuit events, for all tournaments the seeding and draws composition is prepared and each tournament is online evaluated by the players. The committee also participated in the successful organizing of the European Masters Individual Championships 2017 in Poland with the highest number of players ever (520). Spending more than a year with research, development, and testing, a new system of the ESF Masters Ranking has been set into operation. In the autumn of 2017, a new member Stuart Hardy was commissioned. I would like to thank all members of the Committee for their great work, effort and the time they spend as volunteers. 3 4 EUROPEAN MASTERS EUROPEAN MASTERS 5 New Masters Ranking System Czech Grand Prix 2017 Tournament Results Spending more than a year with research and development, we have finished new system of the ESF Masters Ranking. The main reason for this significant change is improving the ranking system for different tournament levels and age groups. New system fully respects our requirements for the appropriate number of points for different levels of tournaments (MO, GP, SS, EMIC) and especially for cases where players are forced or they want to play in lower or combined age categories. The basic principle of the new system is only one combined ranking, regardless of the player age, men and Basics of New Masters Rankings A player s average is calculated on a rolling 24-month basis. All masters whatever their nationality who have participated in an event with a minimum draw size of 3 players will be included in the European Ranking list. The ranking list is based on the total number of points accumulated per player in Masters Events in the preceding 24 months, divided by four. If a player has played more than 4 events in the preceding 24 months, the 4 best results will be divided to obtain the average regardless of the age group where they were earned. Each player s appropriate age category will be defined by his date of birth at the date of the ranking women separated (Men Overall and Women Overall). Each player will be ranked according to the points earned in last 2 years, regardless of the age category he played, where four best results are divided by four. The rankings of separated age groups will be published on the website as before, filtered by the age category. The new system will allow a smooth transition to a higher age category because all the points earned will remain to the player. The combined ranking will also allow the appropriate seeding of players if they start in a different age category. publication. The player will be included in the ranking of his or her own age category regardless of the age categories participated in the tournaments. Ranking points will be awarded for one category only per tournament. Each player can enter whatever lower age category according to his choice or when combining of the age categories is necessary. The ranking points will be awarded for the entered age category according to the ESF Masters Ranking Points and Grades. Age category 35+ will use the basic ranking point values depending on the final position. Higher age categories (40+, 45+, 50+ etc.) will use a decreased number of points towards the basic ranking point ESF Masters Guidelines Please note that ESF Masters Guidelines have been updated. There are all necessary details about the Masters Circuit usefull for the players as well as for the organizers. More details you can find in the Masters Section on the ESF website europeansquash.com values. Basic ranking point values, as well as reduced values, are defined in the ESF Masters Ranking Points and Grades. Tournaments with the status Masters Open (MO) will use the basic ranking point system. Tournaments with the status Super Series (SS) and Grand Prix (GP) will use an increased number of points towards the basic ranking point system. Incremented values are calculated according to the ESF Masters Ranking Points and Grades. The European Masters Individual Championships (EMIC) will use an increased number of points towards the basic ranking point system. Incremented values are calculated according to the ESF Masters Ranking Points and Grades. More details you can find in the Masters Section on the ESF website europeansquash.com Masters tournament in Prague hit a record in ESF Masters Circuit history with a total number of 207 players; another record was achieved in the number of new local players and also new players from Europe to the Masters circuit. Prague hosted players of 24 nationalities not only from all over Europe but some also coming from overseas. The player coming from the furthest distance was John Musto from the USA and Flemming Helgeland, a Norwegian living in Caracas. John as well as Julian Wollny played through the draw with confidence coming from being unknown and unseeded to winning their categories; John in the M45+ and Julian in the M35+ category still active in the German Bundesliga. There were some fantastic finals, but also many great matches not only from an athletic point of view but also full of fair play. Not every player would admit to a double hit off his racket not seen by the referee nor his opponent, which meant he lost the set and the match. Players also enjoyed themselves during the party on Saturday evening with the last dancers leaving the dancing floor at 3 o clock in the morning to continue their matches not that much later. There was not much missing in Prague. The organisers went the extra mile to bake home-made biscuits and cakes. What could be improved for next year is the number of women players. M35+ 1 Wollny, Julian 2 Madella, Filippo 3 Solcansky, Lubomir W35+ 1 Kreisel, Melanie 2 Brabcova, Sona 3 Vladyková, Helena M40+ 1 Haruzi, Dovik 2 De Beule, Dave 3 Johnson, Paul M45+ 1 Musto, John 2 Fritsche, Predi 3 Marcolini, Alessandro W45+ 1 Thiel, Karin 2 Stockbauer, Iris 3 Linhartova, Denisa M50+ 1 Ulvsbäck, Jonas 2 Hyatt, James 3 Janssen, Oliver M55+ 1 Schmelz, Armin 2 Paal, Felix 3 Edmondson, Stephen M60+ 1 Leskinen, Kale 2 Harris, Paul 3 Van Talligan, Lou M65+ 1 Karlsson, Peter 2 Kaistinen, Markku 3 Nuessli, René M70+ 1 Götsch, Bernd 2 Teräsvirta, Heikki 3 Jörn, Dieter

5 8 EUROPEAN MASTERS EUROPEAN MASTERS 9 Meltron Finnish Masters The beginning of a tradition Tournament Results Swiss Cheese and Masters Squash in Zürich In June the Masters Scene met for the second time in Uster/Zürich, surrounded by three lakes and just 15 minutes outside of the city center of Zürich. Besides the mostly very competitive matches, quite a lot of players used their spare time, between or after the matches, to hop into the wonderful city of Zürich or enjoy the great countryside close to the mountains nearby. As expected, the Swiss organization team was on schedule, so that all events, like the Swiss evening with Raclette, music and some drinks (to prepare for the Sunday matches) on Saturday evening started on time. Even a few finalists stayed quite late at the very social evening. But, as the players are old and experienced enough, we saw great Squash the next day. In the over 70 event Bernd Götsch beat Robert Keilmann, both from Germany, in very close 5 games and won the title. Peter Kerry from Wales became third. The title and runner up in the over 65 draw went to the Swiss players Rolf Meyer and Claudio Hassler. Rolf beat Claudio 11:9, 11:5, 11:9 to lift the trophy. Englishman Michael Hoy won the bronze medal in five games against Stefan Messerschmidt from Germany. In the over 60s Swiss hopes lay on number one seed Roland Walser. At the end he had to accept a defeat in four games by Alan Hathway from England. Third on the podium was Loris Mario Petrelli from Italy. One of the closest and best to watch finals at the Swiss 2017 was between unseeded surprise finalist Reto Schmitter, former Swiss national team player and Felix Paal from Germany. After winning the first two games in great manner, Reto was outplayed by a very clever Felix Paal. Felix won the over 55 title in five games. Walter Zemp from Switzerland reached the third place. Jacqueline Eggimann from the home club in Uster won the women over 50 event against Bianca Kringas (Runner Up) from Australia in embattled five games and against Barbara Zatti from Switzerland (Third place) in four. The Zürich based Englishman Mark Woodliffe dominated the over 50s and won the final in three games against Spaniard Marcus Hall. Giorgio Sorio from Switzerland could get third. The Squash Arena Uster club coach, Florian Pössl from Germany, repeated his win of the over 45 event from 2016 and beat Italian Alessandro Marcolini again in three close games in the final. Swiss Thomas Lüdin won the bronze medal. Selatin Kara from Germany won the over 40s against Domagoj Spoljar. Third place by Jaroslav Terlecki from Poland. Tournament Results W35: 1 Poessl, Martina 2 Kreisel, Melanie 3 Meyer, Larissa M35: 1 Reitinger, Roland 2 Kuehn, Alexander 3 Bengu, Emre M40: 1 Kara, Selatin 2 Spoljar, Domagoj 3 Terlecki, Jaroslaw M45: 1 Poessl, Florian 2 Marcolini, Alessandro 3 Lüdin, Thomas W50: 1 Eggimann, Jacqueline 2 Kringas, Bianca 3 Zatti, Barbara Another Uster based player who defeated her Swiss over 35 title for the second time, was Martina Pössl from Switzerland. She won against Melanie Kreisel from Germany in the final 11:6, 11:4, 11:3. Larissa Meyer beat Bea Walser, both from Switzerland, and got third. In the over 35 event Roland Reitinger from Austria lifted the trophy for the first time. He was joined on the podium by Alexander Kuehn from Switzerland (second place) and Emre Bengu from Turkey (third place). Thanks to all players for making the 2.Swiss Masters such a memorable event! The organization team is already working on an even better tournament for next year. Save the date: ! See you there! M50: 1 Woodliffe, Mark 2 Hall, Marcus 3 Sorio, Giorgio M55: 1 Paal, Felix 2 Schmitter, Reto 3 Zemp, Walter M60: 1 Hathway, Alan 2 Walser, Roland 3 Petrelli, Loris Mario M65: 1 Meyer, Rolf 2 Hassler, Claudio 3 Hoy, Michael M70: 1 Götsch, Bernd 2 Keilmann, Robert 3 Kerry, Peter Salmisaaren Sisu, an active squash club in our capital area in co-operation with the Finnish Squash Association and Talihalli venue were happy to organize the 1st Meltron Finnish 2017 in Helsinki. When putting the tournament together we knew that the time is challenging: Continental Europe is largely on vacation in August, there will be a traditional squash tournament in Riga, Latvia during the same weekend and the European Masters Championships would be only in a couple of weeks ahead. But we knew, that with effective marketing and communication we will succeed. And we did. Finland has a very active Masters squash scene and our Masters players have participated in all Masters World and European Championships since 2003, when Finland had the honour of hosting the World Masters. So we knew that we will have a number of domestic players taking part in the tournament. Of course we hoped that there would be as many European players as possible and we think we succeeded in that objective as well. We are sure we will have a lot more players in 2018, when we organize the tournament again. The schedule is already ready, so we are happy to see twice as much players next year. Finland and the Finnish Squash Association have always aimed at organizing high quality events. Finnish Squash has a long history of hosting European as well as World class events. The first European Team Championship in Finland was in 1980 followed by 1989, 1998, 2011 and the latest one in April The Men s World Team Championships in 1991 as well as the World Masters in 2003 were a success. Apart from these prestigious events we have had the pleasure of hosting many other European Championships for Juniors and Clubs. In 2017, Finland celebrates a century of independence and continuous democracy. The secret of Finland is simple. We have had lots of practice: We became autonomous 208 years ago when the Grand Duchy of Finland was formed in 1809 and we have had a parliament of our own ever since Finland s 100 years of independence was also highly visual in our tournament and we know that all our European guests also joined our celebration. We are happy to welcome all our Masters friends to take part in the 2nd Finnish in August The Finnish lady player on our tournament poster, t-shirt and player manual is Mrs. Tuula Minetti (former Myllyniemi). She is the best female squash player over the 50 years of Finnish squash. She won 20 national championships and she represented Finland s national team in Her highest WISPA-ranking is 15. 6 10 EUROPEAN MASTERS EUROPEAN MASTERS 11 Sport & Show award for Konny Hollein Great honor for Konny Hollein from Austria. At Sport & Show award ceremony in Tirol, number 1 of the European Masters Ranking W50+ was chosen by the audience as athlete of the year. Congratulations!! Review of last season September 2016 to August 2017 How many matches per player? The first September to August season is over. Time for a review. 12 tournaments! entries and 749 different players!! 493 players played 1 tournament. 121 played 2, 63 played 3, 32 played 4, 18 played 5, 13 played 6, 3 played 7 and 6(!) played 8 out of the 12 tournaments. That is partly encouraging in the 12 months prior to last season we had only 9 tournaments with 515 different players i.e. we have increased the number of tournaments by 33% and increased the number of different players by 45%. On the other hand, the percentage of players, who only play 1 tournament remains constant at about 64%. This is a lot of (voluntary) work to organise local tournaments for a minority of players, who actually travel to foreign tournaments. The British Open Masters 2018 The National Championships 2018 The National Championships will take place at the National Squash Centre, Manchester from Wednesday 14th to Sunday 18th February The British Open Masters 2018 The British Open Masters will take place at Colets Health & Fitness Club, Thames Ditton, Surrey from Tuesday 5th to Sunday 10th June The question I have been looking at recently is: How many is the optimal number of games per player in a tournament? The answer is easy: It depends. If there are lots of players for the number of courts available (e.g. Spain or Czech), then our hands are tied. In other cases, then we can choose playing systems with less or more matches. With much sadness we report that Eric Robinson (cover photo) died in July A wonderful jovial character who played for Wales at many different age groups. We miss him very much. Some players prefer fewer games, so they can visit the place they are visiting; others prefer more games, reasoning the costs are so high, they want value for their money. As far as possible we try to plan between 4 or 5 matches per player. We guarantee 3 in the invitation, but because of the possibility that not all games are actually played, we prefer to plan for more than 3. Every player has exactly 4 games. Or we could have 4 groups of 4 players, then KO for 1-4, 5-8, 9-12 and Then every player has exactly 5 games. An even more radical system would be two KO rounds, then groups for 1-4, 5-8, 9-12 and Here again every player has exactly 5 games. We would welcome feedback on your preferences. In the second half of last season And if you are wondering why we have actively asked the smaller some players had only 2 matches: 3 age groups (usually the more senior W65+ players in Wales were asked men s groups, for example M70+), and decided they just wanted to whether they prefer to be joined play each other once. We could just play a simple Monrad and very (KO). well organized World Masters Squash Championships The 2018 edition of the WSF World Masters will be held in Charlottesville, USA, at the McArthur Squash Centre in the Boar s Head complex, from 29th July to 4th August. Charlottesville is located just 100 miles south of Dulles Airport, Washington, DC s major international hub. For many competitors, participating in WM2018 will offer a great opportunity to visit the United States capital and enjoy all that it has to offer. From interactive tours of the US government, to artistic treasures housed in the National Gallery and Smithsonian Museum, and exquisite performances at the Kennedy Center, not to mention the Air and Space Museum, Botanical Gardens, and all the monuments of the National Mall DC is ideal for families, couples, and solo travelers. McArthur Squash Center at Boar s Head Sports Club goes way beyond that. At MSC a lot of thought went into the design before the first wheelbarrow of concrete was poured. The venue is divided into 3 pods, with four glass courts near the entrance, the all-glass show court in the middle, and another set of four courts, as well as two doubles courts, positioned at the end of the building. The mezzanines and varying floor levels are wonderful. Natural light from high windows could have been a problem for the center court but a massive black curtain can be drawn around three sides of the court too. To add polish, the columns are wrapped in wood giving the place a warmth that just doesn t exist in new places. A new gold standard for squash has been set at McArthur Squash Center at Boar s Head Sports Club
