3 Team Captains: Tournament Entry Fees: No fee! Entry fee and tournament expenses are paid by the USTA/Midwest Section. Captain s Registration: Captains are required to register 45 minutes before their FIRST match of the weekend. The captain will register at H-F Racquet Club at the tournament desk. Please do not call the club. The entire team that will be playing the first match must be present. Tournament Information: Format: Round Robin Best of two sets with regular scoring. Direct crossover after 1 st game of first and second sets. (No break) Set tie-break used at 6 all in first two sets (first to 7 by 2) Deciding Match tie-break (Coman Tiebreak) used in lieu of third set. (first to 10 by 2). Two minute break between all sets is allowed. Please use score cards. No coaching allowed. Eligibility: Procedures in the event of a tie: Balls: Awards: Tournament Schedule: A minimum of 6 players who were on the final local roster must be available to compete at sectionals. A captain must request a waiver from the USTA/Midwest Section Championship Committee to participate with fewer than this number. Please notify your district USTA League coordinator as soon as possible if less than 6 players will be attending the championships. The tie will be broken by the first of the following procedures: o Winner of the most individual matches in the entire competition o Loser of fewest number of sets o Loser of fewest number of games o Winner of the head-to-head match o A method to be determined by the championships committee Penn Awards will be presented to the 1 st place teams. 4 Schedule of Events Special note: The warm up is 10 minutes. Officials will tell you when it is 10, 2, and 1 minute. When time is called you must start play immediately. The first serve needs to be struck within 20 seconds of officials calling time to start. Please spin the racquet to determine who serves prior to warming up and warm up on the side you will be playing on. Saturday The ENTIRE team that will be playing the first match, must report to the match site 45 minutes prior to their first match time. After this first time all teams must hand in their line-ups 30 minutes before the start of their first match. Page 4

6 GRIEVANCE & APPEAL PROCEDURES NTRP DYNAMIC DISQUALIFICATION & REVIEW PROCEDURES The following guidelines and procedures will be used during this championship. Pleas review carefully. GRIEVANCE (Written formal complaint regarding an alleged violation of a regulation or procedure.) 2.02 C(1) All complaints alleging a violation during championships competition shall be in writing and delivered to the duly appointed site director within thirty minutes of completion of the team match, or prior to the commencement of the next team match involving the player or team, whichever occurs first. 2.02E(3) Self-rate Grievance complaint. Players who enter USTA League Tennis by inappropriately selfrating at an NTRP level lower than their actual skill level are considered to have violated the standards of good conduct, fair play and good sportsmanship. These players may be subject to a self-rate grievance complaint. USTA League Tennis Regulation 2.00 GRIEVANCE PROCEDURES, with the following exceptions and modifications, shall apply to self-rate grievances Please take the time to review the balance of 2.02C to familiarize yourself with the process. Forms may be obtained from the site director or the Section League Coordinator. GRIEVANCE APPEAL (Request for reconsideration of a previous decision determination or finding.) Any party to the complaint may file an appeal. 2.03A(3) The party appealing shall file written notice of appeal with the chairman of the appropriate Grievance Appeal Committee and shall, at the same time, send a copy to the chairman of the Grievance Committee whose decision is being appealed, Local, District or Section League Coordinator, and to the other party (ies) involved in the complaint. 7 KEEPING HYDRATED DURING THE WEEKEND: All athletes should drink plenty of fluids (water, sport drinks, juice, milk, etc.) throughout the day. If you wait until you are thirsty, you have waited too long. Note: your body can lose a lot of fluid, via evaporation, while you are flying since the air in the passenger compartment is very dry. You should drink 1 cup of non-caffeine or non-alcoholic drink per hour. Drink another cup of fluid just prior to play. In fact, also drinking 16 to 20 ounces of water, juices, or sports drink minutes before your match can further help in avoiding heat disorders. Bring a large thermos with you on court and drink frequently (i.e., at every changeover). Water and/or sport drinks are effective. After your match, drink plenty of fluids. It could be water, Gatorade, lemonade, juice, etc. If you prefer, dilute any of these to your own taste. Water by itself does not replace necessary electrolytes. Don't forget to eat! Fresh fruit and fruit juices are an excellent source of some electrolytes and carbohydrates, but you may have to make a special effort to replace some salt as well. Use cotton/polyester blends rather than 100% cotton or tightly woven nylon. Have an extra dry shirt available for change. Perspiration can block ventilation when the shirt is soaked and in humid conditions the cooling of evaporation is of little significance. Remember, you are allowed 25 seconds between points and 90 seconds at the changeover. Use this time to recover. Change the shirt frequently (and shorts if necessary), and use a cool towel on the face and upper back. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT DISORDER 1. Heat cramps: muscle spasms, usually due to extensive and repeated sweat losses, fatigue, and normal body temperature. 2. Heat exhaustion: extreme weakness, exhaustion, headache, dizziness, nausea, profuse sweating, chills and cool skin, normal body temperature, rapid pulse, sometimes unconscious. 3. Heat stroke: hot, dry skin, headache, nausea, confusion, staggering gait, extremely high body temperature, collapse, unconsciousness, sometimes death. IF ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS (#2 OR #3) SHOULD OCCUR: 1. Call a doctor or emergency vehicle. (Keep applying ice water continuously and generously until medical assistance arrives). 2. Loosen the player's clothing at once. 3. Place player in a prone position in the shade. 4. Apply ice to head and body (or whatever means are available to providing cooling). Page 7

8 USTA/MIDWEST SECTION 2010 Tri-Level Playoff RULES AND REGULATIONS 2010 USTA Rules and Regulations will be used. 1. USTA Rules, USTA League Regulations, USTA/Midwest Section Standing Orders and The Code will be observed. Individual matches are unofficiated. Roving officials will be present. 2. Good sportsmanship, good manners and generally accepted customs that constitute the social graces of court play are the expected behavior of players. 3. Team Lineups for each match must be submitted by the captain to the tournament desk 30 minutes prior to the scheduled match. The captain must inform the tournament desk that the entire team is on site and available to play. The tournament desk has the authority to start putting on matches when courts are available no sooner than 30 minutes prior to the scheduled match. If a team lineup is not submitted prior to match being called; an official will be called. The Point Penalty for Lateness as stated in the USTA Friend at Court will be used for each court where the player for the court being called fails to appear. The penalties are as followed: 5 minutes or less: Loss of toss plus 1 game 5:01-10 minutes: Loss of toss plus 2 games 10:01-15 minutes: Loss of toss plus 3 games More than 15 minutes: Default 4. Order of strength is: 3.5 Team, 4.0 Team, and 4.5 team. Players must be at or below the correct NTRP level to participate. 5. If you must cancel your participation in the USTA League Section Championship, you must immediately notify your District USTA League Coordinator. 6. A round robin schedule is being used. A warm-up of ten minutes is permitted beginning with the court assignments. 7. All cellular phones and beepers are banned from tennis courts during all USTA League matches. Should a phone or beeper ring in the middle of a point in a league match, the opposing player/team may call a let under the hindrance rule and request that the phone be turned off. If the phone/beeper rings again, the opposing player/team can claim the point. The player/team with the phone may not call a let. 8. One team point will be awarded to the team winning the majority of the three individual matches. 9. If teams are tied, the tie will be broken according to USTA League Regulations Regulation 3.03I 10. If a team needs to forfeit a position, forfeits will be according to USTA League Regulations. The forfeited point goes to the opponent. In Tri-Level, teams do not move up when there is a forfeit, rather, the position is forfeited. 11. Eight (8) first place trophies will be awarded to the winning male team and eight trophies will be awarded to the winning female team. Extra trophies may be ordered at the team s expense. 12. A complaint against a player or team alleging a violation during championship league competition shall be filed with the Grievance Committee in accordance with rule 2.02C, page 8 in the 2010 USTA League Regulation Book. The complaints must be written on specific forms obtained from the site director and returned within the time restraints (30 minutes). A filing fee of $50.00 is due upon submission of complaint. If decision of Grievance Committee is appealed, a filing fee of $50.00 is due upon submission. 13. During District and Section championship play, players declared ineligible by the Self-Rate Grievance Committee will not be allowed to advance with their team, but their match results will stand as played. As reference to USTA/Midwest Section League Standing Orders: 3.01D(2)b and 4.01D(2). 14. Matches will be the best of 2 sets, with regular scoring and in an event of split sets, a third set match tie-break (Coman Tiebreak) (first to 10 by 2) shall be played in lieu of third set. A two minute break between all sets is allowed. No coaching is allowed. Page 8

9 15. Any team forfeiting an entire team match (3 individual matches) will result in having their team members be ineligible to compete in any Championship Competition within the USTA League program in the league season of In addition, team members may be barred from competition in their local and/or district competition in the 2011 season. All individual matches won (by the defaulting team before the forfeit of the entire team match) will be reversed and awarded to the opposing team. 16. After the match, players are to return the used balls and report the scores to the site director. Scores should be verified by all those who competed. Captains must sign the completed scorecard within 15 minutes after the team match is over. 17. Disqualification of any individual and/or team and/or forfeit of matches is within authority of the Championship Committee and/or Championship Director when it is determined those eligibility requirements and/or rules have not been followed. 18. There will be a 10 minute warm-up. Should no official be on your assigned court, please spin racquet prior to your warm-up to decide first server. Be aware of your warm-up time and start play in 10 minutes. 19. USTA official(s) will be roving the courts to supervise play. Foot faults will be called without warning. Officials may overrule if in direct observation of court and ball. Please raise your racquet if an official is required. You may not leave the court without an official being notified. 20. Interpretation of the USTA Rules and Regulations of the USTA League Program is within the authority of the USTA/Midwest Section League Coordinator. Page 9

10 ATTENTION CAPTAINS! Illegal Racquets The Head TI. S7 tennis racquet is an illegal racquet according to the Rules of Tennis and therefore not approved for league play. The mainstrings in this racquet are 17 ½ inches long versus the 15 ½ inches limit specified in Rule 4 of the ITF Rules of Tennis. The Gamma Big Bubba (137) and Big Bubba Pro (137) are illegal to play due to their length. If any of your players use this racquet, you must inform them that it cannot be used during district, state, sectional or national USA League Tennis Championship play.
