1 DPHS BOYS AND GIRLS TENNIS Informational Meeting Head Coach- Simon Conway (Coach Conway) Assistant Coach - Coach- Liz Good (Coach Good) lizgood@cfl.rr.com DPHS Athletic Director- Mr. John Magrino magrinj@ocps.net Important dates: Team Pre-Season Training: January 19 30, 2009 (no rackets) Team Try-outs: February 2 February 7, First match week beginning February 9, 2009 Note: to participate in any of the above events, students must have completed all their physical paperwork (which included a physical & parental permission slips forms can be picked up at the South Campus Administration Office). These forms have instructions as to where to take them (make sure you check off all sports you are trying for so you don t have to keep filling out forms). The Athletic Trainer (AT) must have all forms, filled out completely before she will give the student a stamped/approved Emergency Treatment Authorization card (ETA) to take to the coach of the team he/she is trying out for. Without that stamped card, no player can participate in any physical event at the school no exceptions! Avoid the last minute rush to get this done; do it now. If the student participates in more than one sport, each coach must have an approved ETAC. The student can either request the card back when he/she finishes one sport to take to the other or get another card from the AT (if the parents have checked off all sports). The ETAC is for the player s safety in case of need of emergency medical treatment. 2 What happens at : Pre-Season Training: January 19 30, 2009 Candidates turn in their approved/stamped by the Athletic Trainer Emergency Treatment Authorization Cards (ETAC). Wear comfortable, weather appropriate clothing and shoes that they can work out in. Please bring refreshment(s), water-bottle, sun-block, towel (do not bring tennis racket) needed for extensive, outdoor, physical activity. Coach(es) will lead prospective team members in stretching exercises that will be used throughout training as well as during the season (should they make the teams). Players will participate in drills designed to improve skills needed for tennis. Players will also participate in Mental Toughness Training designed to give students the right attitude for success in sports and in life. Training will take place after school each day (4:35pm or, if early release day, 3:35pm) at the DPHS Tennis courts if weather permits. If raining or threatening weather, training will take place in the Media Center on the South Campus or students will be directed to other location for days activities. Players attending ALL organized sessions will be rewarded with higher consideration for making the team against a player who did not attend pre-season conditioning. Note: Do not wait till pre-season training to work on physical fitness and/or your tennis game. Start now with a routine to prepare (if you need help with this contact Coach Conway). Try-outs will be very competitive this year, only the most prepared will make the teams. Playing tennis every week between now and try outs will certainly improve your chances.

3 What happens at : Team Try-outs: February 2-7, 2009 All players participating in the try out procedure will accept the coaches decision. While results on the tennis court during try outs are extremely important, other factors will also be considered when deciding if a candidate is selected. If you are going to try out then understand that you are tennis players. You will arrive on time and you will wear comfortable, weather appropriate clothing and shoes. Please bring refreshments, water-bottle, sun block, towel, tennis racket, tennis shoes, needed for extensive, outdoor, physical activity. Note: tennis racket will not be provided for candidates. Tennis balls will be provided for try-outs. Coaches/Team Captains will lead players in stretching exercises that will be used throughout try-outs as well as during the season (should they make the teams). Try-outs will take place after school each day (4.35 pm or, if early release day, 3.35 pm) at the school Tennis courts if weather permits. Serious candidates will change quickly, get out to the courts & start stretching for day s try-outs to show dedication. Players should plan to stay till 6pm each day unless dismissed earlier by the coaches. Players will be matched up in singles & doubles tennis matches as directed by the coaches & will play matches as directed by the coaches. All players should know how to keep score in tennis (15, 30, 40, deuce, ads, etc.), when to change sides and service order/side (this will be reviewed in Conditioning) players will be offered spots on each Varsity team by 8pm on the last day of try-outs. DUE TO RESTRICTED LIGHT AND COURT AVAILABILITY, THERE WILL BE NO JV TEAMS THIS YEAR Those players who do make the team are reminded that ACADEMICS come first.

4 OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION All players must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 NO EXCEPTIONS To those who don t know me we are the class act. We will display good sportsmanship no matter what we are confronted with. NO PLAYER WILL EVER LEAVE A COURT to find me. I will find you. At the end of each match we will as a team go to the opposing team s head coach and shake that person s hand. The use of alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs or profanity is a violation of school rules and will be dealt with according to the school board policies Players will attend ALL PRACTICES unless specifically excused by the Head or Assistant coach. If you are sick, then I expect you to contact me either via or cell phone. If a player fails to attend a practice without good reason or notification, then they may be benched for the next match. If a player fails to attend a match unless specifically excused by one of the coaches, then they will be benched for the next match. On a day that school is in session, a player MUST ATTEND a MINIMUM of three periods to be able to practice or play unless an exception has been granted directly by the AD, the Assistant AD or the Principal. THESE NEXT TWO ARE SOMETHING THAT EVERYONE MUST TAKE TO HEART Any student utilizing online mediums such as MySpace, Facebook, YouTube or internet message boards to threaten, intimidate, harass or entice other students or coaches of ANY SCHOOL, may be subject to immediate disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal from a team by the Head Coach, Principal or Athletic Director. Any student utilizing online mediums such as MySpace, Facebook, YouTube or internet message boards to post images depicting the use of drugs, alcohol or suggestive behavior that is not deemed conducive to the image expected of a Dr Phillips studentathlete, may be subject to immediate disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal from a team by the Head Coach, Principal or Athletic Director. DO NOT BELIEVE THAT PRIVACY SETTINGS WILL PROTECT YOU. THESE THINGS HAVE A WAY OF GETTING OUT
