Fifty years ago, a certain little British car hit the road and went on to become a design emblem in the Swinging Sixties and after. Kate Scotter discovers why the car has remained fashionable for five decades. Ask anyone who owns a Mini and there's just one word which describes the little car: fun. It is a car which makes heads turn, whether it's the new style or the old. At the beginning it was just a basic car and now it s one of the best-known vehicles of all times. The first Morris Mini was produced in Oxford in Since that day, more than six million Minis have been sold. Tim Clubman, 43, from Stalham, restores Minis, he says: It is a great little car: amusing, pretty, fun to drive and just like a go-kart. It is affordable and cheap to run and there's a whole Mini community. All around the world, there's some kind of Mini event happening every day. The original Mini was designed by Sir Alec Issigonis for the British Motor Company (BMC). It had rope door handles and, with a petrol shortage in mind, a small engine. The Mini was intended for a lowincome public. Just 140 of the original Minis are still on the road today. Sue Joseph, 63, who lives in Norwich, restored her Mini Cooper which she bought 40 years ago when she was 23. She says: We didn t use it for a long time but my husband and I have spent the last 15 years rebuilding it. We used to live in the London area and it was so easy to drive and park. Famous stars like The Beatles drove a Mini up Kings Road in London and Michael Caine raced one around the streets of Turin in the 1969 film The Italian Job. Adapted from The Evening News Page 2 / 6

5 1 2 After not quite reaching the hospital in time and having to give birth in their Kia Carens, 23-year-old Samantha Smyth and 24 year-old Tony Richardson have made a last minute change to their baby name. The infant was originally to have been Tilly but the parents decided that the name didn t fit and instead name her Kia after the car. Smyth said they probably wouldn t have named her daughter after the car if it had been a Citroën or a Volkswagen. Tennis star Roger Federer has defended his good friend Thierry Henry, who became one of football s most hated players when he used his hand to control the ball in France s World Cup qualifying match against Ireland when his team was down 0 1. France needed a draw to go on to next years World Cup and Henry s handball led to France scoring and equalizing. Federer and Henry became friends when they starred with Tiger Woods in a Gilette advertising campaign. The tennis star said : It (handball) happened in a split second. You can t blame him for playing on. If the referee doesn t see it, I just think it is the system and the referee who are at fault. Henry apologized after the match. 3 4 A cat that accidentally made contact with a fuse at an Illinois power station has caused electricity to be cut to around 1,500 homes and business in the city of Carrollton, in Illinois s Green County. When workers went to investigate the problem, they found the cat lying still several feet away from the fuse. It eventually rose from the ground and walked away. People affected had power again within hours. According to Florentine art expert Renzo Manetti s new book, The Mona Lisa s Veil, there is good evidence that Leonardo Da Vinci painted both clothed and unclothed version of his best known painting, the Mona Lisa. Renaissance artists, drawing on Neoplatonic philosophy, often produced portraits in vulgar and heavenly form. Manetti writes that the painting Monna Vanna by Andrea Salai, student of Leonardo s, is very likely inspired by the missing artwork. Even though the [nude] painting has been lost, there are at least 10 reproductions or comparable works, painted by pupils or disciples, which enable us to reconstruct the original, wrote Manetti.
