Two Buckeyes won individual event titles against the Illini, as redshirt senior Michael Newburger posted a on pommel horse to claim his second consecutive title on the event and freshman Jake Dastrup notched a career-high on parallel bars to claim first place overall. Ohio State also posted a season-best on floor exercise, led by junior Danny Steiner who scored a on the event to finish in second place. SCOUTING MICHIGAN Defending NCAA and Big Ten champion Michigan enters competition Saturday ranked No. 2 in the country with an average score of The Wolverines have participated in two meets so far this season, claiming first place at both the Windy City Invitational ( ) and the Stanford Open ( ). Adrian de los Angeles claimed the parallel bars title at the Windy City Invitational with a 15.15, while freshman Tristan Perez-Rivera and de los Angeles claimed the floor exercise (15.55) and vault (15.30) titles at the Stanford Open, respectively. As a team, the Wolverines rank No. 1 on rings (74.400) and vault (74.125), No. 2 on floor exercise (73.925) and parallel bars (72.925), No. 3 on pommel horse (72.025) and No. 10 on high bar (67.875). athletics Individually, Michigan holds No. 1 rankings on floor exercise and vault as senior Sam Mikulak (15.500) and de los Angeles (15.200) claim the top spots, respectively. In addition, junior Nick Hunter and senior Syque Caesar are tied for No. 3 on parallel bars (14.975) while de los Angeles is the team leader in the all-around at No. 6 (86.800). LAST TIME AGAINST THE WOLVERINES The Buckeyes and Wolverines meet for the second time this season, having previously competed against each other at the season-opening Windy City Invitational. Michigan claimed first place at that event ( ) while Ohio State ( ) tied for second place with Illinois. The teams will compete against each other three more times this season starting Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. at the Arnold Challenge hosted by Ohio State at the Columbus Convention Center and ending with the Big Ten Championships March in Lincoln, Neb., and the NCAA Championships April in Ann Arbor, Mich. BUCKEYES IN THE RANKINGS TEAM The Buckeyes remain the second-highest ranked Big Ten team as they rank No. 4 in the latest GymInfo National Rankings with a total season average score of Ohio State also ranks within the Top 10 on four events as the team is No. 1 on pommel horse (72.650), No. 2 on vault (73.700) No. 3 on high bar (71.225), and No. 5 on parallel bars (71.600). The Scarlet and Gray ranks at No. 10 on floor exercise (70.075) and rings (71.500). INDIVIDUAL Individually, the Buckeyes hold rankings on all six

2 events. Steiner entered the floor exercise rankings this week at No. 12 (14.850) while Newburger continues to pace the team on pommel horse, holding the No. 1 spot on the event (16.225). Behind Newburger, freshman Jake Dastrup ranks No. 13 (14.500). On rings, junior Drew Moling comes in at No. 9 (15.125), while junior Larry Mayer paves the way for the Buckeyes on vault, as he is currently No. 5 on the event (15.025). After Mayer, freshman Logan Melander ranks No. 8 (14.925). On parallel bars, Dastrup ranks No. 7 (14.850) while senior Misha Koudinov comes in at No. 14 (14.675). Koudinov also holds the No. 1 spot on high bar (15.000) while freshman Sean Melton ranks No. 10 (14.750) and senior Kris Done ranks No. 20 (14.300). POMMEL HORSE SPECIALIST With his individual event title on pommel horse against No. 8 Illinois, Newburger has collected two consecutive event titles this season. The Austin, Texas, native earned his first title at the Windy City Invitational with an NCAA record score before claiming his second title against the Illini with a score. The defending national champion on pommel horse, Newburger currently ranks No. 1 on the event. BREAKING RECORDS Two Buckeyes set or tied NCAA records at the Windy City Invitational. Newburger scored a career-high and Ohio State record on pommel horse to earn the all-time best record on the event while junior Larry Mayer tied the all-time best record on vault with his career-high and Ohio State record score of The previous NCAA record on pommel horse (16.00) was set by Daniel Ribeiro (Illinois) in 2009, while Mayer is now tied for the NCAA record on vault with Jake Dalton (Oklahoma), who originally set the current record in NEWBURGER, MOLING NAMED TEAM CAPTAINS Redshirt senior Michael Newburger and junior Drew Moling have been named team captains for the 2014 season. Newburger claimed the 2013 NCAA Pommel Horse title, becoming the second gymnast in program history to win a title on the event and the first since Drew Durbin won three consecutive titles ( ). A two-time All-American, Newburger also claimed the 2013 Winter Cup Pommel Horse title in addition to winning four individual event titles and ranking No. 1 on pommel horse for four consecutive weeks (Feb. 18 March 11) throughout the regular season. Moling, a native of Canal Winchester, Ohio, earned 14 Top 5 finishes throughout the regular season last year, including an individual event title on high bar (15.05) against defending national champion Michigan and an individual event title on rings (15.50) against No. 15 UIC. The 2013 Ohio State Big Ten Sportsmanship Honoree, Moling advanced to the individual event finals on parallel bars at the Big Ten Championships, finishing in eighth place. OHIO STATE SIGNS TWO FOR 2015 Ohio State head coach Rustam Sharipov announced the signing of two gymnasts to National Letters of Intent during the November early signing period. Meyer Williams (Dallas, Texas) and Cody Teaney (St. Petersburg, Fla.) each signed NLIs with Ohio State for the 2015 season. 4 RUSTAM SHARIPOV HEAD COACH KHARKOV, UKRAINE THIRD SEASON Rustam Sharipov (roos-tom SHARE-ee-pahv) was named the head coach for the Ohio State men s gymnastics team in the summer of Sharipov, previously an assistant coach at the University of Oklahoma from , brings the experience of three Olympic medals, including two golds, to Columbus as the eighth head coach in program history. In , Sharipov guided redshirt junior Michael Newburger to the 2013 NCAA Pommel Horse Championship. The Austin, Texas, native scored a on the event to become only the second gymnast in program history to win a national championship on pommel horse. In addition to Newburger, Sharipov coached sophomore Danny Steiner and redshirt sophomore Jeff Treleaven to All-America honors on floor exercise and vault, respectively, at the 2013 NCAA Individual Event Finals. Ohio State placed fourth overall at the 2013 Big Ten Championships, one place higher than the previous season. Under Sharipov s guidance, Steiner placed second overall on floor exercise, earning Second Team All-Big Ten honors for his performance. In his first year as head coach, Sharipov led the Buckeyes to a record-setting season, as he guided five members of the team (senior Ty Echard, sophomores Misha Koudinov and Kris Done, redshirt sophomore Michael Newburger and freshman Danny Steiner) to All-America status at the 2012 NCAA Individual Event Finals, tying the season program record with the 1993 and 2002 campaigns, respectively. Sharipov coached Echard, a 2012 Nissen-Emery Award Finalist, to a share of the Big Ten pommel horse title and subsequent first team All-Big Ten honors. He also guided Koudinov to a third-place tie on floor exercise and a second place finish on parallel bars at the Big Ten Championships. A native of Kharkov, Ukraine, Sharipov was named 2006 National Co-Assistant Coach of the Year, helping the Sooners claim the NCAA Championship that year. In 2008, Sharipov helped guide the team to a second national title and was named co-assistant coach of the year for the second time in his career. In 2011, he was named the CGA West Region Assistant Coach of the Year, leading the Sooners to a NCAA runner-up finish in the team finals April 15 at St. John Arena in Columbus. After retiring from competitive gymnastics in 2000, Sharipov moved to the United States and began his coaching career at the Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy in Norman, Okla. After one year, Sharipov accepted a coaching position at the Houston Gymnastics Academy where he worked with some of the top gymnasts in the nation, including U.S. National Team members Sean Townsend and Todd Thornton. In 2004, he was the head coach for the U.S. team that won the gold medal at the Pacific Alliance Competition and in 2002 was the coach of the U.S. team that took gold at the Pan American Games. As a gymnast, Sharipov began his competitive career as the Soviet junior national champion in 1989 before bringing home the all-around championship at the 1990 U.S. Olympic Cup. Sharipov helped the Unified Team to an Olympic Gold Medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He put on a show at the 1992 European Championships, winning high bar and taking second on parallel bars. Sharipov also took first on parallel bars at the CIS Championships and the DTB Cup, and added a high bar championship at the Tokyo Cup. A 1997 graduate of Kharkov State in Ukraine, Sharipov was awarded the title of Master of Sport in The honor represents the highest athletic level one can reach in the former Soviet Union. At the 1994 World Championships, Sharipov was a member of the third-place team and was the runner-up on parallel bars. In 1995, after winning championships on parallel bars at the French International and the Cottbus International along with an all-around title at the International Championships of Romania, Sharipov had an impressive showing at the European Cup, winning gold on high bar and parallel bars. He followed that up in 1996 with perhaps the best year of his career, taking first on parallel bars at the European Championships before adding the championship on the apparatus at the World Championship. The crowning moment came in 1996 in Atlanta, Ga., where Sharipov won the Olympic gold medal on parallel bars and was a member of the bronze-medal Ukrainian team.

5 CASIMIRO SUAREZ ASSISTANT COACH HAVANA, CUBA THIRD SEASON BOB GAUTHIER ASSISTANT COACH LINDON, UTAH THIRD SEASON Casimiro Suarez was named assistant coach of the Ohio State men s gymnastics team in the summer of Suarez, a native of Havana, Cuba, came to Ohio State after coaching at Orlando Metro Gymnastics in Florida since A U.S. National Team coach since 2004, he was named the Olympic Coach of the Year in Suarez served as Cuba s women s national team coach from , was Brazil s women s national team coach from and also spent three seasons at Oklahoma as an assistant coach for the women s team from Suarez has coached former Buckeye Tai Lee to many prestigious awards including the state and regional eight champion and a 10.0 honor - awarded to the region s outstanding high school senior in academics and gymnastics. As a gymnast, Suarez was a member of the Cuban National Team for 16 years and won nine all-around national titles. He competed in the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, finishing sixth in high bar. Suarez also participated in the World Championships seven times. Suarez has a degree from the School of Superior Physical Education in Havana, Cuba, and brings 20 years of coaching experience to Columbus. Gauthier, a native of Lindon, Utah, came to Ohio State after spending more than 20 years as a men s head coach for all ages and levels at various local gyms. As coach of Arete Gymnastics, Gauthier has had four gymnasts who were on the junior national development team, while one is a two-time pommel horse national champion. Following his final season at BYU as team captain, Gauthier was an assistant coach and team recruiter at BYU from 1985 to 1990 and judged NCAA collegiate sanctioned events for 11 years ( ).
