W ( ) SOONERS SEEK NINTH NATIONAL TITLE NORMAN, Okla.-- After finishing second at the MPSF Championship the No. 2 Oklahoma men s gymnastics team heads to Minneapolis, Minn., in search of the program s ninth national title. The 2009 NCAA Men s Gymnastics Championships will take place April at Sports Pavilion on the campus of University of Minnesota. Hopefully, all the teams will be ready to go at it and have a great competition, said head coach Mark Williams. Our intention is to be familiar with the surroundings and not be intimidated by going in there to compete for a national championship. The 2009 NCAA Championships will begin on Thursday, April 16 with two qualifying sessions at 1 and 7 p.m. (CDT). The Sooners will compete in session two with No. 3 Illinois, No. 6 Ohio State, No. 7 Minnesota, No. 10 Illinois-Chicago, and No. 11 Iowa. The top three teams from each session will earn berths in Friday night s team and all-around Finals, scheduled for a 7 p.m. start. Fans can access the feed on the Web Casts page by going to TICKETS: All-session adult tickets, which include four competition sessions, are priced at $35, with all-session student tickets available for $25. Single-session tickets are priced at $15 for adults and $8 for students. Special single-session packages for groups of 15 or more are also available and are priced at $5 per ticket. The Sooners have previously competed this year at the site of the 2009 National Championship in Minneapolis, Minn. when they faced No. 1 Stanford and No. 7 Minnesota. Oklahoma won the meet with a team score of Sophomore Steven Legendre claimed the event title on vault with a and senior co-captain Chris Brooks claimed the high bar title with a and the all-around with career high score of The fact that we competed at Minnesota, put it on a neutral floor for both Stanford and ourselves. I was encouraged by the competition we had there earlier this year, where we did well, said head coach Mark Williams. In 2008, Oklahoma won its eighth National Championship and now owns the most titles of any OU athletics program. Jonathan Horton, became the Sooners sixth Nissen-Emery Award winner and earned All-America status on three events (AA, SR, PB) to bring his career total to 18, a program record. The Sooners have won five of the last seven NCAA crowns, all under Williams. Sophomore Steven Legendre won individual national championships on floor exercise and vault, earning All-America honors on both events as well as on high bar, at the 2008 National Championships. Legendre became just the fourth Sooner to earn multiple NCAA titles in a season and the first freshman in school history to win national crowns on at least two events.

The Sooners rounded out the 2008 season with 11 All-America honors, second highest in the nation NCAA CHAMPIONS HOSTED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA OU won its fourth NCAA crown in five years while compiling a perfect 31-0 record. Jonathan Horton captured the all-around, as well as individual titles on the parallel bars and high bar. The Sooners again led the nation in All- America honors, setting a school record with 14 honorees NCAA CHAMPIONS HOSTED BY THE UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY The Sooners won their third title in four years under Mark Williams, finishing 21-2 on the season and leading the nation with 13 All-America honors. David Henderson was the still rings champion and Jonathan Horton brought home five All-America honors NCAA CHAMPIONS HOSTED BY TEMPLE UNIVERSITY The Sooners won their second straight title in 2003 under Mark Williams with a perfect 26-0 record. Daniel Furney (Nissen Award winner) was the all-around and parallel bars champion. Josh Landis won titles on the floor and pommel horse NCAA CHAMPIONS HOSTED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA OU won its fourth national championship on its home floor after suffering just one defeat in the 2002 season. The Sooners, guided by Mark Williams, went 28-1 one year after finishing as NCAA runners-up NCAA CHAMPIONS HOSTED BY PENN STATE UNIVERSITY Head coach Greg Buwick produced OU s third national title and his first of three Nissen Award winners with Jarrod Hanks in Buwick s Sooners went 15-1 and also won the Big Eight title NCAA CHAMPIONS4 HOSTED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON Head Coach Paul Ziert and the Sooners won their second straight national title with a 10-1 season. OU was led by All-American Bart Conner who won his second straight all-around title NCAA CHAMPIONS HOSTED BY ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY Four years into the Paul Ziert era, OU won its first national title. The Sooners (7-1) tied Indiana State for the national crown. It remains the only tie in NCAA team championship history. Total National Championships... A Tradition of Championship... Since the creation of collegiate men s gymnastics (1953), only seven current teams have won consecutive national championships. Oklahoma is the only men s gymnastics program to have won two straight or more on three separate occasions. Penn State and Nebraska are the only schools to win three or more straight titles. After winning back-to-back titles in 1953 and 1954, Penn State won three in a row from 1959 to Nebraska ran an impressive string of four straight titles from OU s eight national championships ties Nebraska for third all-time behind Penn State (11) and Illinois (9). No. 2 Oklahoma posted a NCAA scoring record with a on March 21 against No. 8 Penn State on senior night. OU broke its own record ( ) which happened to be recorded on senior night in The Sooners swept all event titles by scoring team event highs on March 21 on floor (62.150), pommel horse (59.250), rings (60.850), vault (64.650), parallel bars (59.950) and high bar (60.000). Sooners Finish Undefeated for Third Time... Oklahoma went undefeated with a 12-0 record in the regular season for the third time under Williams.
