3 COACHING STAFF JUSTIN SPRING HEAD COACH // THIRD SEASON Justin Spring enters his third season at the helm and sixth season overall with the Illinois men s gymnastics program. Following the season, Spring was named head coach for the Illinois men s gymnastics program after spending one year as an associate head coach. Spring handles all of the gym coaching duties along with assistant coaches Ivan Ivankov, former Illini gymnast Daniel Ribeiro and volunteer assistant David Sender. In , Spring guided the Illini to a 28-5 overall record, their third straight Big Ten title and a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships, marking the team s highest finish during his tenure. Spring s 2011 squad featured four NCAA All-Americans and two NCAA champions. After a successful 2011 campaign, he was named Central Region Coach of the Year and Big Ten Coach of the Year for the second straight season. In one season as associate head coach, Spring led Illinois to its second straight Big Ten team title and a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Individually, five Illini earned All-America accolades, three took home Big Ten titles and Stannard became just the third Illini to win the prestigious Nissen-Emery Award, which is presented annually to the nation s top senior male gymnast. Additionally, Spring helped guide Illinois to a 22-5 overall record and the top spot in the rankings on four separate occasions and never dropped out of the top five. For his efforts, Spring was honored as both Central Region Coach of the Year and Big Ten Coach of the Year. Spring was promoted to associate head coach following the 2009 season after three years as an assistant under the legendary Yoshi Hayasaki. The promotion meant that Spring had to retire from competitive gymnastics to concentrate on coaching full time. In 2009, Spring was named Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year along with Ivankov after helping Illinois to the Big Ten Championship, a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships and three individual NCAA titles. Spring, a former Illini standout, had an amazing year in 2008 that culminated with winning a bronze medal with Team USA at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Along with his teammates, Spring defied all odds as the U.S. men brought home the bronze medal and surprised everyone, except themselves. Spring was spectacular in the team finals in leading the Americans to the improbable bronze. He scored on vault in the second rotation, a team-leading on parallel bars, a spectacular on horizontal bar, along with on floor exercise in the three-up, three-count format. Spring s road to the Olympics was not an easy one to say the least. Plagued by injuries throughout his career, Spring battled through constant pain in hopes of accomplishing his lifelong dream of bringing home an Olympic medal. Less than a year before his Olympic appearance, Spring tore his ACL at the 2007 Visa Championships. However, he did not let the incident hamper his dreams. After making a speedy recovery, the Burke, Va., native headed to the 2008 Olympic Trials, where he was scheduled to compete on only four events due to a nagging ankle injury. However, he knew he needed to do more in order to make the team. He needed to show the Olympic selection committee that he had the complete package they were looking for. With his dream on the line, Spring rolled the dice and made a last minute decision to add floor exercise to his competition events. Despite not practicing on the event in nearly two months, the gutsy move paid off as he posted a score of , the second highest score of the night. After a second strong day of competition at the Olympic Trials, all Spring could do was wait. The Olympic team would be announced the next day. In the end, the decision to add floor proved to have a huge pay off, as Spring s name was one of the six announced to the team. Spring, one of the most talented gymnasts in Illinois history, finished his collegiate career in He now looks to help lead the Orange and Blue to Big Ten and NCAA 2012 ILLINOIS MEN S GYMNASTICS // 3 Championship titles in his new role on the coaching staff. In his first season as an assistant in 2007, Spring was instrumental in helping the Illini return to the NCAA Championships Super Six, as the Illini extended their streak of top-five finishes to five straight years with fifth-place finishes at NCAAs and Big Tens. In 2008, Spring helped lead the Illini to a runner-up finish behind No. 1 Penn State at the Big Ten Championships. At the 2008 NCAA Championships, the Illini continued their success finishing third, their sixth consecutive top-five finish. The Illini brought home nine All-American honors with freshman Paul Ruggeri winning the national title on high bar, Illinois first high bar champion since Spring in Finishing his collegiate career in 2006, Spring strung together one of the best seasons in Illinois gymnastics history. The season culminated with him earning the 2006 Nissen- Emery Award, an honor that goes to the top senior male gymnast in the nation. A double titlist at the 2006 NCAAs, Spring took home the crown on the high bar and defended his title on parallel bars. In addition, he carded five total All-America honors with a secondplace finish in the all-around, third on floor exercise and fourth on vault. Along with his individual honors, Spring helped the Illini to runner-up finishes at the 2006 NCAA and Big Ten Championships. The finish at NCAAs came less than a half-apoint shy of team-champion Oklahoma, and just short of the Orange and Blue s 10th national title. Overall, the Burke, Va., native is a four-time NCAA Champion, winning a pair of titles on high bar in both 2004 and 2006 and back-to-back crowns on parallel bars in 2005 and 2006.

5 COACHING STAFF IVAN IVANKOV ASSISTANT COACH // FOURTH SEASON Ivan Ivankov is in his fourth season as an assistant coach for Illini men s gymnastics. Last season, Ivankov helped Illinois to its third straight Big Ten title and a thirdplace finish at NCAAs, where four Illini earned All-America status and two were crowned champion on individual events. For his efforts, he garnered his third straight Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year honor. In 2010, he earned his second Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year accolade for his role in helping the Illini to an 11-1 regular season mark and a second consecutive Big Ten title. Following his stint as a visiting assistant in 2009, he was promoted to assistant coach after helping Illinois to a Big Ten title, fifth-place finish at the NCAAs and three individual NCAA crowns to earn Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year honors along with Justin Spring. The 1994 and 1997 World All-Around Champion and two-time Olympian, Ivankov spent five years as a men s team coach at the Bart Connor Gymnastics Academy in Norman, Okla. He retired from international competition in 2006 after competing at the World Championships. Ivankov achieved the highest athletic level Master of Sport in his native land. DANIEL RIBEIRO ASSISTANT COACH // FIRST SEASON those years as well. Daniel Ribeiro begins his first season as an assistant coach for the Illini after finishing his own impressive collegiate career at Illinois. As a member of the Fighting Illini men s gymnastics team from , Ribeiro won two NCAA titles on pommel horse (2009, 2011) and was a three-time captain, starting his sophomore year. The Chestnut Ridge, N.Y., native is also a three-time Big Ten pommel horse champion, taking the conference crown in his freshman (2008), junior (2010) and senior (2011) seasons while earning first-team All-Big Ten accolades in each of Ribeiro s success was not limited to the collegiate stage, however, as the former All-American captured pommel horse gold at the 2010 U.S. Visa Championships between his junior and senior seasons. Sender continues to train and is a current member of the U.S. senior national team. Sender, who was a two-time NCAA champion on vault at Stanford, has had success at the both the national and international levels. The Arlington Heights, Ill., native was crowned champion in the all-around and on vault at the 2008 U.S. Visa Championships. He also won on vault at the 2006 U.S. Visa Championships and the 2007 and 2005 U.S. Winter Cup Challenges. 7 THE FIGHTING ILLINI 2012 SEASON PREVIEW C.J. Padera, 2010 Big Ten champion on parallel bars, garnered his first-career All- America accolade last season and recorded two first-place and 12 top-five finishes in Tri-captain Kyle Moe, who specializes on rings, and high bar technician Devin Regan round out the skilled group of seniors. The junior class, featuring Yoshi Mori, Austin Phillips, Malcolm Brown and recent transfer Vince Smurro, will look to contribute in multiple events as well. Yoshi brings a huge component to this team, Spring said. He will be doing allaround for us this year. He was not on his game last year due to a shoulder surgery, but he is back and stronger than ever. I expect big things from him this year. Smurro has come in and really exceeded my expectations. He has stepped it up and has the highest hit percentage of anyone right now. Front (L-R): Paul Ruggeri, (former Illini) Maxwell Portocarrero, Tyler Mizoguchi, Devin Regan Back (L-R): C.J. Padera, Kyle Moe, Austin Phillips, Anthony Sacramento Head coach Justin Spring returns for his third season at the helm for the Fighting Illini men s gymnastics team, which starts the season ranked No. 2 in the nation and No. 1 in the Big Ten. Spring will look to guide the 2012 Illini to the program s fourth consecutive Big Ten championship and first national title since 1989 after a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships last season. I think we have the most talented team we ve had in 20-plus years, Spring said. We re pushing early in the year to have huge start values. I m not expecting anything huge from this team early. We re going to be a team that slowly grows and is a heavy hitter by the end of the year. The Illini return a talented senior class, boasting two U.S. national team members, two NCAA champions, a combined four national titles and 13 All-America accolades. A lot of our depth comes from the senior class, especially with Paul (Ruggeri) in his fifth year, now wrapped in this giant mass of talented individuals, Spring said. They ll certainly be the backbone with all of their experience. They set the tone for the program. They ve been to meets before, so they know how to role through a competition, remain calm and compete well. Everyone is looking up to the them to do that. Redshirt senior Paul Ruggeri, a seven-time All-American, three-time NCAA champion and current senior national team member, will return for a fifth year after missing most of the 2011 campaign due to injury. The Manlius, N.Y., native has already posted a solid comeback, capturing gold on high bar and silver on parallel bars last fall at the 2011 Pan American Games, where he also helped Team USA take home the bronze medal. Mori, 2010 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, recorded 15 top-five finishes last season. The Irvine, Calif., native will vie for the top all-around spot along with Ruggeri, Mizoguchi and freshman C.J. Maestas. Phillips posted a strong comeback in 2011 after coming off a season-ending injury in Last season, the Mahwah, N.J., native won two event titles, recorded eight top-five finishes and clinched Illinois third straight conference title by hitting his high bar routine at the Big Ten Championships. Phillips will vie for a spot in the lineup in multiple events and will serve as tri-captain for the Illini. Smurro, who transferred from William & Mary following the 2011 season, will look to make an impact on floor as well as push the lineup on parallel bars and high bar, while Brown will specialize on pommel horse. Jordan Valdez and Cameron Rogers lead a talented sophomore class, which also features Alex Varga, Andrew Margolis, Cole Smith and Chad Mason. These guys are the very much needed first countable scorers, Spring said. They are not necessarily the first routine that we re going to count, but as a whole, they will contribute a lot to what the team could be putting up this year. Valdez is coming off an impressive freshman campaign, highlighted by finals appearances on both parallel bars and high bar at the Big Ten Championships. The Louisville, Colo., native will look to contribute on vault as well. Rogers competed on every apparatus last season and was a solid performer on Fellow national team member Tyler Mizoguchi, a three-time All-American and reigning NCAA champion on parallel bars, had a stellar 2011 campaign, winning a career-high 10 individual titles and posting 26 top-three finishes. The Houston, Texas, native ended the season on a high note, capturing the title on parallel bars and finishing runner-up in the all-around at the NCAA Championships after placing third in the all-around at the Big Ten Championships. Anthony Sacramento was solid in 2011 as well, earning his second straight All- America honor on still rings. The Libertyville, Ill., native also placed first twice on rings and in the top three 10 times throughout the season and was tabbed one of three team captains for the 2012 Illini. 8 THE FIGHTING ILLINI pommel horse, still rings and parallel bars. After a strong debut season, the Charlotte, N.C., native will vie for a lineup spot on pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and floor. Varga showed consistency throughout 2011, competing on floor and vault in every meet while recording eight top-five finishes throughout the season. Pommel horse specialists Smith and Mason and rings technician Margolis will strive to make lineup on their respective events. A skilled group of newcomers, including freshmen C.J. Maestas, Josh Wilson, Michael Wilner, Nick Sacramento and Jacob Tilsley will join the Illini for the 2012 campaign. Wilner was the junior national champion on rings last year, and I think he s going to walk right into our lineup and compete, Spring said. He s another factor of this being one of the strongest ring teams I ve seen in my entire life. Another huge component of that is C.J. Maestas. He is a genetic specimen as far as strength goes, and that plays into his other events by allowing him to do big starts and big routines on everything. Maestas, a standout all-around gymnast and current senior national team member, will lead the talented group of freshmen and look to contribute on every individual event and in the all-around. The Corrales, N.M., native recently joined Ruggeri and Mizoguchi at the Pan Am Games, where he came home with two bronze medals (rings and team) and just missed a third trip to the podium with a fourth-place finish in the all-around. Wilson, a former junior national team member, will look to crack the lineup on floor, vault and high bar, while Wilner and Nick Sacramento, younger brother of Anthony Sacramento, will look to compete on rings and Tilsley on floor, vault and pommel horse. Spring also made two additions to his coaching staff in the offseason. Daniel Ribeiro, a former Illini All-American and reigning NCAA and Big Ten pommel horse champion, will remain involved with the program as a student assistant coach, while David Sender will aid the squad as an assistant coach. The pair will join Spring and assistant coach Ivan Ivankov for the 2012 campaign. The Orange and Blue will open the season on the road on Jan. 14 at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago. The Illini will host three home meets this season, as they welcome No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 3 Michigan to Huff Hall on Jan. 28 for a showdown of the nation s top three teams. The Illini will also host No. 12 Illinois-Chicago on Feb. 11 and No. 7 Ohio State on March 2 for Senior Day. L-R: Josh Wilson, C.J. Maestas, Nick Sacramento, Michael Wilner Illinois will look to capture its fourth straight conference title at the Big Ten Championships, April 6-7 in Iowa City, Iowa. Two weeks later, the Orange and Blue will head to the NCAA Championships, hosted by Oklahoma, April Coach Spring s Event Breakdown Pommel Horse: I think pommel horse is the only event that took a dive this year. It s an event where consistency is always a problem. We ve got a lot of specialists, but we re going to be fighting on this event. We re still going to be in the mix. Rings: I think we have one of the most impressive ring teams in Illinois history. These guys are absolutely incredible and are unlike anything I ve ever seen before. They have an amazing balance of strength and the ability to swing and do a good dismount, which is difficult for some of the stronger guys sometimes. I m really excited about rings. It s going to be a very consistent event for us this year. Vault: This is an event where we could go big or really struggle as far as finding our place. Vault is one skill rather than a 10-skill routine. We have guys that can possibly do this big upgraded vault, but they have to do it consistently. It could be a big event for us, or we might have to back off a little bit. Parallel bars: We are a very strong team on parallel bars. We have anchors who are NCAA champions, and I think that our team could have a battle for the top three spots at the Big Ten Championships this year. High bar: High bar is anchored by Paul (Ruggeri), who could probably put up a score with a fall that could still win an NCAA title. It s a bold statement, but he is truly one of the greatest in the world on high bar. Having him as an anchor is fantastic. He is complemented by a bunch of other guys who might not have his start value but are close. We have a really strong high bar team. We just need to focus on keeping these start values and hitting consistently. If we can do that, we ll be one of the strongest high bar teams in the country. Floor: We ve got an unbelievable lineup doing start values in the mid-16s. In the past, we ve had one or two guys who are in that range. We have five guys now doing NCAA championship-winning sets as far as starts, but to win NCAAs, you have to be able to do the routine very well. We re not quite there yet, but we re doing high-value starts already. It s very exciting to see how this floor team is going to progress. 20 2011 SEASON REVIEW 2011 SEASON REVIEW The accolades and accomplishments were plentiful for the 2011 Illinois men s gymnastics team, as the Orange and Blue captured its third straight Big Ten team title and placed third at the NCAA Championships to secure its highest finish since Individually, two NCAA and Big Ten champions were crowned, four Illini earned All-America honors and the coaching staff swept the Central Region awards for the third year in a row. Illinois entered the season ranked fourth in the first national rankings of the year and were picked to finish second in the Big Ten behind defending national champion Michigan. Similar to last season s start, the Illini immediately set the tone at their first meet of the year, the Windy City Invitational in Chicago. Taking on Big Ten foes Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio State, Iowa and host UIC, Illinois secured its second straight team title at the event, and the winning score of vaulted the squad into the top spot in the following week s national rankings. The Illini continued the momentum into the next two weeks of competition, as they were victorious over Minnesota and Nebraska in the first tri-meet of the season before defeating Iowa in their home debut at Huff Hall. The Illini took the following weekend off from team competition. Six members of the squad, including seniors Daniel Ribeiro, Paul Ruggeri and Chad Wiest, junior Tyler Mizoguchi, redshirt sophomore Austin Phillips and freshman Jordan Valdez, as well as former Illini Luke Stannard and Wes Haagensen, traveled to Las Vegas to compete in the 2011 U.S. Winter Cup Challenge for a chance to earn a spot on the 15-member U.S. men s senior national team. Seven Illini advanced to the finals of the two-day event, led by solid performances from Mizoguchi and Ribeiro. Mizoguchi was named to the national team for the second time in his career after placing seventh in the points program and ninth in the all-around, while Ribeiro successfully defended his national title on pommel horse. Unfortunately, the weekend was not without a low point, as senior Paul Ruggeri suffered an ankle injury on vault that forced him to miss the remainder of the season. Ruggeri was able to retain his spot on the national team after serving as an alternate for the 2010 World Championships Team and was deemed eligible to redshirt and will return to the Illinois lineup next season. With little time to adjust to significant changes in the rotation, the Illini dropped consecutive meets to Michigan and Penn State, before recording three straight runner-up finishes on the road in two tri-meets and a quad meet that included eventual national champion Stanford and perennial powerhouse Oklahoma. The Illini rebounded with a win at home against UIC in the final meet of the regular season before hosting the Big Ten Championships at Huff Hall for the first time since Illinois had remained atop the conference rankings in nearly every event all season long and solidified its dominance with its third straight Big Ten title and 26th in program history, the most among any Big Ten school. Illinois also became the first school to win three consecutive titles since Ohio State, which accomplished the feat from Of the nine Illini that qualified for the individual event finals the following night, two took tome Big Ten titles. Ribeiro claimed his second straight and third overall on pommel horse, and Wiest collected the first of his career on floor. Each earned first-team All-Big Ten honors, as did Mizoguchi for his third-place finish in the all-around, while head coach Justin Spring earned his second straight Big Ten Coach of the Year honor Team Results 1/15 at Windy City Invitational 1st of 6, /22 at Minnesota w/ Nebraska 1st of 3, /29 vs. Iowa W, /12 at Michigan L, /19 vs. Penn State L, /4 at UIC w/ Air Force and Stanford 2nd of 4, /12 at Ohio State w/ Nebraska 2nd of 3, /19 at Oklahoma w/ Penn State 2nd of 3, /26 vs. UIC W, /1 at Big Ten Championships 1st of 6, /14 at NCAA Championships (Team Qualifying) 2nd of 6, /15 at NCAA Championships (Team Finals) 3rd of 6, Following a week off from competition, the Illini traveled to Columbus, Ohio, for the NCAA Championships hosted by Ohio State. At the College Gymnastics Association/NCAA awards banquet held the night before the start of competition, the Illinois coaching staff was recognized for the third straight year, as Justin Spring was named Central Region Coach of the Year, and Ivan Ivankov and Luke Stannard garnered Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year accolades. Ranked fourth in the country with a national qualifying average of heading into the championships, Illinois competed in the afternoon qualifying session along with top-ranked Oklahoma, Penn State, Minnesota, Air Force and UIC. Despite a shaky start to the meet, the Illini battled through to earn a spot in the Super Six team final for the ninth straight year. In the team finals, the Illini put together their best overall performance of the season and tallied a season-high score of to take third behind Stanford ( ) and Oklahoma ( ). Mizoguchi led the way with a runner-up finish in the all-around to secure his second All-America honor and was one of five Illini to qualify for the individual event finals. Mizoguchi added some hardware the following night, as he claimed the first NCAA title of his career on parallel bars, while Ribeiro concluded his collegiate career with his second NCAA title on pommel horse. The wins marked the second time in three years Illinois produced at least two national champions. In addition to Mizoguchi and Ribeiro, juniors Anthony Sacramento and C.J. Padera also collected All-America honors, as Sacramento tied for second on rings and Padera tied for eighth on parallel bars. The season was capped off with the team s annual awards banquet, where Ribeiro captured Most Valuable honors, as well as the Yoshi Hayasaki Award for consistency after leading the team with a career-high 12 individual titles. He also never placed lower than second on pommel horse and finished runner-up only twice all season. Mizoguchi, who was named Most Outstanding, won a career-best nine individual event titles, posted 26 top-three finishes and set school records in the all-around and parallel bars. Phillips, who was forced to miss the 2010 season due to a knee injury, received the team s Most Improved Award after returning to the lineup for 11 meets this season and won event titles on rings and high bar. Along with Phillips, Sacramento and Kyle Moe were voted team captains for the season, while Wiest earned the team s Scholar-Athlete Award for the second consecutive year, and freshman Jordan Valdez took home the Fighting Illini Attitude Award ILLINOIS MEN S GYMNASTICS // 20
