1 MEN S GYMNASTICS ABOUT THE MEET The Illini hit the road for the first dual meet of the season, as the team takes on No. 2 Penn State. PSU enters the weekend with a 6-0 record on the season. The meet is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 27, at 3 p.m. CT at Rec Hall. Senior Bobby Baker won three event titles, while seniors Harry McLellan and Tyson Bull each came away with an event title of their own. BAKER NAMED B1G CO-GYMNAST OF THE WEEK Following an impressive performance against Arizona State, which included three event titles and a nation-best on vault, senior Bobby Baker was named Big Ten Co-Gymnast of the Week. Baker shared the award with Ohio State s Sean Melton and it is the fourth-time the Lemont, Illinois, native has earned the recogntion in his Illini career. OPENING WEEKEND: WINDY CITY INVITATIONAL At the Windy City Invitational two weekends ago, Illinois won the event for the fourthconsecutive time. The victory marked the eighth time the Fighting Illini won the event since it was first held during the season. Illinois has won six Windy City Invitational titles under Justin Spring was the last time that the Fighting Illini placed outside of the top two teams in the field. UI has claimed the title in: 1988, 2005, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2017 and CGA PRESEASON COACHES POLL Illinois Men s Gymnastics placed fifth in the Preseason Coaches Poll, released by the College Gymnastics Association. The Fighting Illini have been ranked in the top five of the preseason poll in eight of the last nine years. 2 BIG TEN PRESEASON POLL In the Big Ten Preseason Poll, Illinois was slated to finish third in the league for the fifth-consecutive season. A year ago, the Illini hosted the Big Ten Championships and finished second behind Ohio State. Senior Chandler Eggleston, the 2014 Big Ten Floor Exercise Champion, and Alex Diab, the only two-time Big Ten Still Rings Champion in program history, were named Gymnasts to Watch by the conference. FORMER NATIONAL CHAMPION RETURNS Brandon Ngai returns for his senior year after winning the 2016 national title on pommel horse. Ngai has won 17 career pommel horse event titles, including one this season at the Windy City Invitational. RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS Spring welcomes back five gymnasts that have garnered fourteen All- America honors over the course of their careers. Redshirt senior Chandler Eggleston (2x Floor, High Bar and Vault) and senior Bobby Baker (All- Around, Still Rings, Vault and Parallel Bars) have each earned the honor four times, while junior Alex Diab (2x Still Rings, High Bar) has earned All- America status three times during his time with the Orange and Blue. Senior Brandon Ngai has earned the honor twice on Pommel Horse and senior Tyson Bull garnered All-America status on High Bar in CAREER TITLE COUNT Out of the 15 returning Illini on the roster, 8 have claimed event titles in their careers. Bobby Baker begins the season with 22 total titles, while Chandler Eggleston has has 21. Alex Diab enters the season with 18 career titles won and Brandon Ngai has 16, all on pommel horse. Johnny Jacobson and Tyson Bull have 11 and nine career titles, respectively, and Sebastian Quiana enters the season with two titles. Dennis Minton claimed one event title on still rings in CURRENT ILLINI IN THE RECORD BOOK Entering the season, four Illini currently own places in the top scores section of the record book. During his national championship campaign in 2016, Brandon Ngai won nine titles on pommel horse, tied for the sixth-most in a single season in program history. Bobby Baker is the second Illini in the books, owning the fourth-best allaround mark registered by an Illinois gymnast. Baker sported an during the season when the Orange and Blue hosted Penn State. On floor, Chandler Eggleston won six titles during the season, tied for the ninth-most in a single season in Illini history. Johnny Jacobson won six parallel bars titles in 2017, which places him tied for eighth-most in a single season in program history. LOOKING AHEAD Following its meet against Penn State this weekend, Illinois Men s Gymnastics will be on the road again as the team travels to Iowa City, Iowa, to take on the No. 8 Hawkeyes.
